2014 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH
THE AEE FOUNDATION
The Foundation of the Association of Energy Engineers Scholarship Fund promotes
continuing education of qualified professionals in energy engineering and energy management. The Foun-
dation receives funding from voluntary Chapter and personal contributions. This year, the Greater Phila-
delphia Chapter will donate two $1,000 scholarships to local students who apply for the award. The asso-
ciation works with the Foundation to facilitate the application process. The application period opens Jan-
uary 1st. All applications must be received by the local chapter Scholarship Chair, Randy Haines, by April
1. Applications are then reviewed and final recommendations are submitted to the Scholarship Director
at national by May 1st. Award winners are notified by the Foundation over the summer.
For more information on eligibility and how to apply for the 2014 scholarship opportunities, as well as a
full listing of the 2013award winners, please visit: http://aeefoundation.org/scholarships/2012-faee-
scholars/.
PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
Our chapter mission includes fostering action through education and networking to promote the priorities of energy professionals. This year our chapter is making it a priority to extend our valuable chapter re-sources to the energy professionals of the future. Our plans will take a variety of paths.
Student Involvement in Meetings
We would like to encourage more youth involvement at our meetings, but we need your help. We already offer a discounted student meeting fee for most meetings. Help us spread the word to high school and col-lege students about our programming. Encourage your kids to seek permission to attend a meeting of in-terest. They can enjoy learning about science without the threat of taking a test at the end. Commit today to bring a budding energy engineer to a particular meeting.
Co-Ops, Internships and Mentoring Opportunities
Future City needs your help! They are looking for mentors and judges. More information on Future City is on the following page. We encourage you to get involved!
Scholarships Help us identify worthy recipients for scholarships. Each year, GPAEE sponsors two $1,000 scholar-ships awarded to eligible, local, college engineering students through the national Foundation of the Associa-tion of Energy Engineers. A member’s endorsement makes a huge difference.
Our board will continue to support projects such as the Future Cities Competition, local STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) academy programs and AEE International student initiatives. We welcome participation from the membership, your ideas on ways to enhance youth involvement and educa-tion are highly encouraged. To share suggestions, please contact Maryanne Campbell at (215) 684-6724 or via email at: [email protected].

The Future City Competition is a fun and exciting educational program for middle school students that combines a stimulating engineering challenge with a "hands-on" application to present their vision of a city of the future. The competition takes place from September through February every year. More than 300 students representing 44 participating schools are hard at work on their cities of the future, but there are 3 schools that need our help. The following schools still do not have mentors: GA Stetson Middle School in West Chester, PA Holy Family Regional Catholic School in Levittown, PA Octorara Junior High School in Atglen, PA The competition organizers also need volunteers for the following positions: ESSAY JUDGE: read and critique essays written by student teams. Essays will be e -mailed to you so you can read at your own pace over 1 week in mid-January. VIRTUAL CITY JUDGE: review the team’s cities as created on SimCityTM to confirm it meets the stated requirements – size, population, health, industry, etc. Copies of the judging requirements and software will be sent to you. Work at your own pace at home. PRELIMINARY JUDGE: be a member of a judging team that listens, questions, judges the preliminary teams. Time commitment – Saturday, January 25, 8:00AM – 1:00PM. Location: TBD. Preliminary Judges are required to attend a training session if you have not judged before. This year’s training session has not yet been scheduled but will be a teleconference at 12pm likely on 1/21 or 1/22. SPECIAL AWARDS EVALUATOR: talk with each team’s members to determine which team best meets your organization’s special award. Please indicate the name of your organization on the sign up form. Time commitment – Saturday, January 25, 8:00AM – 1:00PM. Location: TBD. GENERAL VOLUNTEER: help run the competition by volunteering to help with registration, act as a team escort, take photos, update our website, etc. Time commitment – Saturday, January 25, 8:00AM – 1:00PM. Location: TBD. A few volunteers are needed starting at 7:00AM and a few more to help during the afternoon. The competition is made possible through the efforts of a large number of dedicated volunteers. If you would like to help, please use the on-line sign up form by clicking here: Volunteer Opportunities.

DEP Natural Gas Vehicle Grant Program
The second round of Natural Gas Vehicle grants is now open, providing an estimated $11 million to help pay for the incremental purchase and conversion costs of heavy-duty natural gas fleet vehicles. Grant requests can be no more than 50 percent of the incremental purchase or retrofit cost per vehicle, with a maximum of $25,000 per vehicle. Those eligible to apply include non-profit organizations, for-profit companies, local transportation organi-zations, state owned or state related universities, Commonwealth or municipal authorities, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. For this round of funding for Fiscal Year 2013-14, Act 13 stipulates that 50 percent of the available funds be allocated exclusively for local transportation organizations, including non-profit agencies providing public transportation services and public transportation, port and redevelopment authorities, as well as school bus projects. Note that in accordance with Act 13, this is the last round for which an exclusive allocation for local transportation organizations will be made. Applications are being accepted online only, using DCNR's eGrant system - www.grants.dcnr.state.pa.us. The deadline to submit an application is 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 10, 2014. Grants will be awarded in the spring. To learn more about the program and complete the online grant application, click here.

PENNSYLVANIA LOOKS TO DOUBLE ITS RENEWABLE ENERGY STANDARD On Tuesday, Pennsylvania State Senator Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery/Delaware) joined State Representative Greg Vitali (D-Delaware) and environmental organizations at a press conference to unveil a bill that would increase the amount of renewable energy powering Pennsylvania homes and businesses by boosting the state’s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard (AEPS). Both the Senate bill, and a mirror bill pending in the House (H.B. 100) would amend the AEPS by requiring Pennsylvania electric companies to obtain 15 percent of their power from renewable sources by 2023. Currently, the standard requires just 8 percent by 2020. (more)
GAS HEATING PRICES KEEP HITTING WINTER LOWS IN PA. About two-thirds of the Pennsylvanians who heat their homes with natural gas are heading into December paying the lowest prices in a decade for this time of year. Gas prices for six out of 10 regulated utilities are at a December low since 2003, according to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s rate information. Those utilities include Columbia, National Fuel Gas, Peco, People’s, Philadelphia Gas Works and UGI Penn. (more)
SUPPLIERS SAY PA. FUEL TAX HIKE TO HIT PUMP PRICES
Pennsylvania's new transportation law will raise fuel taxes Jan. 1, and companies that supply gas and diesel in Pennsylvania say razor-thin profit margins leave them little choice but to pass on the entire cost increase to the pump. That point has at times gotten lost amid mixed messages from Gov. Tom Corbett and some lawmakers. In various ways they have suggested that the cost may not entirely be passed down to consumers, or that it shifts the tax burden to "oil companies," never mind the fact that integrated multinational oil companies are barely involved in distributing gas in the United States. (more)
PA. MOVES SLOWLY AHEAD IN COMPRESSED-NATURAL GAS FUEL The River Valley Transit's spiffy new compressed natural gas filling station here is the latest link in a growing CNG network aimed at fleets of large, fuel-hungry vehicles. "We think this is going to be a winner," said Kevin W. Kilpatrick, the planning manager for the transit agency, which already owns one CNG bus, has four more on order, and aspires to convert its entire 29-bus fleet to natural gas within a decade. River Valley is the mass-transit company for Williamsport and Lycoming County. (more)
