Republic of Botswana — Tender No. 9/1/8/85—86RAILWAY TRACK FORMATION WORKS

TENDERS ARE INVITED for the widening of the embankments and cuttings on the main line railway between Gaborone and the South African border. This forms part of a major track upgrading project shortly to be commenced.

As the work will be largely carried out with the normal train service in operation, close co-operation with the National Railways of Zimbabwe will be necessary, and there will be restrictions on the use of mechanical plant and the times during which it can be used. A feature of the contract will be that spoil from cuttings will normally be loaded on special trains and will be used later to widen embankments. All such operations will be carried out at specified times in gaps betweeen the normal train service.

Preference will be given for firms resident and registered in Botswana who can demonstrate to the satisfaction of Botswana Railways that they have the experience and resources to engage in railways earthworks contracts. Registration with the Central Tender Board in Class 4 Roads and Earthworks Grade B or above is preferred although not essential providing other requirements are satisfactory.

Work on site is programmed to commence not later than the 7th October, 1985 and is to be completed within 12 months from the starting date.

Tender documents will be available from the office of the Chief Civil Engineer, Botswana Railways, Private Bag 00125, Gaborone, Telex No. 2743 Works BD, Telephone Gaborone 55503.

Tenders in duplicate must reach the Secretary, Central Tender Board, Gaborone, Private Bag 0058 in a plain sealed envelope marked “TB 9/1/8/85—86 — Railway Track Formation Works” (or by hand to Room 306 of the Ministry of Finance Building) not later than 0900 hours on Friday 30th August, 1985 when tenders will be opened in the presence of those tenderers who wish to attend.

Tenders made by telephone, telex or by telegram will not be considered, and late tenders will not be accepted. The tender evaluation criteria will include price, capacity, expertise, and management control of the track formation works, in relation to completion period offered in the tender.
