More control as you have access to the operating system directly. Drawback : You will have to manually handle the scalability using load balancer. Google App Engine: You just have to upload the code and everything will be automatically taken care. But if you want to install any other software, it will not be possible. Automatic scaling is added advantage. No headache of server maintenance. If you are a novice developer just want to create a website, you can opt this option.
