GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 5, 2015

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: Happy Independence Day! (1) A five-day Catholic youth leadership program for teens is set for

Saint Joseph’s College in Standish on July 5-9. The event is sponsored

by the Diocese of Portland’s Office of Lifelong Faith Formation and is

focused on discipleship & evangelization. The week features daily

workshops, small group sessions, Eucharistic Adoration, and daily

Mass, including a closing Mass with Bishop Robert P. Deeley on Thurs-

day, July 9. The week also includes fun activities, evening socials, and the opportunity

to make new friends. Ten youth from Good Shepherd Parish will participate. (2) Help

Us Attend World Youth Day in Poland! Several youth and chaperones from our

parish hope to attend World Youth Day in Poland next summer (in 2016). Their princi-

pal fundraiser this summer is to charge for parking at St Margaret’s Rectory parking

lot in Old Orchard Beach when it is not being used for church functions. We hope to

make it available most weekends and some weekdays (including Thursday night fire-

works). If you are planning a beach day or making a visit to downtown OOB this

summer, I invite you to support our pilgrims by using our parking lot. To make a dona-

tion directly, you can contact Josh Houde: 282-4812x117 or send it to the parish office

with a note that it’s for World Youth Day. (3) Each of our parish fairs at various

church locations have their own flair and attract folks who live in the general area, but

I always enjoy stopping by, checking out what is available, greeting friends and visi-

tors too. I hope many will visit St. Philip Church Hall in Lyman next weekend for

the annual indoor yard sale. That’s Saturday and Sunday, July 11/12. (4) Parking

lot and handicap access at St. Joseph Church this SUMMER! As announced earlier,

current plans call for the project to begin in July. The construction company we hire

will start by re-locating St. Joseph Street. In order to keep you informed and able to

plan accordingly, we will provide regular updates in a section of the bulletin dedicated

to this major project. Stay tuned here and on the parish website in the weeks ahead, but

for now, be aware that the task will require significant adjustments by churchgoers

through the month of October. It appears this project will be the first major restoration

of the lot since the 1920s. Current codes and regulations for historically significant

buildings will guide the final design. While the number of legal parking spaces will

remain pretty much the same, handicap accessibility, overall safety, lighting and beauty

will be greatly enhanced. While the work proceeds, a good measure of patience will be

required on the part of all who attend Mass at St. Joseph Church. (5) The 2015 Catho-

lic Appeal: As of June 18, Good Shepherd parishioners pledged $120,018 or 72.21%

of our total parish goal of $166,202. These results reflect a serious commitment on the

part of generous parishioners to how we Catholics desire to contribute to the good of

people living in Maine. If you have not yet done so, I invite you to pledge this week.

You may place the pledge form in the basket during the usual offertory collection (or

stamp & mail the envelope). (6) Thank You of the Week: To all who serve our coun-

try in the military & diplomatic corps, and to veterans who have served our country to

protect our values and religious liberty. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5 - Msgr. Tonne: A priest was visiting the

home of one of his flock and found only the children to welcome him. “Mother will be

back soon,” they said, offering him some peanuts in a dish. He was soon lost in conver-

sation and suddenly realized that he had consumed all the goobers.

“I’m terribly sorry,” he apologized to his attentive listeners. “I didn’t leave any for you.”

“Oh, that’s OK,” smiled the little angels. “We just eat the chocolate covering.” -Quote

Excellence

St. James School staff partners with parents, parishioners, and our community to provide students with opportunities to become faith-filled Catholics, creative and critical thinkers, life-long learners, and confident contributors to the Church and society.

Our eighth grade had a busy week before they graduated. Here, they are seen ready for the last dance of the year and it

was a Luau. The eighth graders will be sorely missed, but they will always hold Saint James School in their hearts. They are a close knit bunch as most of them have been

together for many years. They are going on to Cheverus High School, Catherine McAuley High School, Thornton Academy, Biddeford High School and Old Orchard Beach High School.

We wish them the very best!

GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 5, 2015

St. James School Summer Office Hours: Tuesday & Thursday

9:00–Noon, June 18th through August 27th.

Once again we are very pleased to say that Good Shepherd

Parish Vacation Bible School 2015 was a wonderful week

filled with faith, prayer, and fun! This year we had 70+

participants sharing in the faith and fun with Imagination

Station, Bible skits, games, song, and prayer! We thank you, the families,

for allowing us to work with you and share the beautiful message of how

much ‘Jesus loves you’! Even when you feel left out, Jesus loves you! Even though you are different, Jesus loves you! Even when you don’t understand,

Jesus loves you! Even when you do wrong, Jesus loves you! Even when you are afraid, Jesus loves you!

We would like to thank our adult and junior volunteers for so willingly

sharing their time and many talents during this week-long program. What a

wonderful testament to the people of Good Shepherd Parish. May God bless

you all for your loving commitment to the children of our community!

Thank you also to all the families who generously donated household items

for the people of our community.

The Student Council at Saint James

School ran a talent show at the end

of the school year where students

were able to show their outside tal-

ents to their school community.

Saint James School has talent! The

performers were varied and we saw

students singing, doing karate

moves, dancing, drawing pictures, or telling jokes. The

audience was appreciative and respectful to all. It was a wonderful

way to wrap up another school year.

contact Josh for directions or to RSVP.

Special Invitation: I am looking for families who love Christ and His

Church and are willing to share that love and time with 1 or 2 UNE stu-dents through a parish host family program. The frequency at which you
