GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 26, 2015
Message from Monsignor René Mathieu:
(1) Farewell Father Jack Dickinson! Every priest brings personal
talents and limitations to his assignments. There are special graces
afforded the newly ordained and young priests, inspired as they are
with the latest in theological currents and pastoral practice. As he
leaves Good Shepherd Parish after only two years, it is remarkable
how much Father Dickinson was able to accomplish in such a short
time. He supported the development of new ministries, gave particular attention to
the St. James School community, young adults and Eucharistic adorers. He quietly
but effectively supported church vocations among young women & men and provid-
ed support & gentle guidance to various parish commissions. He never hesitated to
respond to the sick and dying, no matter the hour of day or night. Among staff mem-
bers, he has been a humble and devoted collaborator, and he has been a priest parish-
ioners can be proud of. I can testify that he enjoys an intensely devoted life of prayer.
Fr. Antonydass and I hold dear his friendship, and will miss him even as we wish
him well in his studies. We expect all A plusses from you, Fr. JD! (2) Fr. Robert
Gaudreau has been appointed parochial vicar to Good Shepherd Parish to succeed
Fr. Dickinson, effective August 1. A Rhode Island native, Fr. Gaudreau earned bach-
elor’s degrees in philosophy from Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick, Rhode Island, and theology from the Université de Sherbrooke in Sherbrooke, Québec.
He also holds a master’s degree in French from Rhode Island College. For nearly 25
years, he taught religion, French, and Spanish in schools in Québec, Massachusetts,
and Rhode Island. Fr. Gaudreau was ordained to the priesthood on November 7,
2008, in Sherbrooke, Québec, for the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke. Prior to arriving in
Maine, he served in many capacities, including as pastor and administrator at parishes
in Sherbrooke, Windsor, and Stanstead; all located in the province of Québec. In December of 2014, Fr. Gaudreau was appointed temporary parochial vicar for Corpus
Christi Parish in Waterville. In February of this year, Fr. Robert served in the same
role at Our Lady of the Snows Parish in Dexter and St. Agnes Parish in Pittsfield.
During June, he served as a temporary hospital chaplain in Bangor; he returned to
Waterville for the month of July. We warmly welcome him to Good Shepherd Parish.
(3) Second Collection - Missionary Cooperation Plan: This weekend, July 25/26,
visiting missionaries are speaking at St. Margaret and Most Holy Trinity churches as
part of the annual commitment of the diocese toward direct support of mission
churches and ministries. Sr. Betty Vetter, SDS, and Sr. Karlyn Cauley, SDS, Sisters
of the Divine Savior (Salvatorian Sisters) are visiting us on behalf of their congrega-
tion founded in Italy in 1888. They currently minister in 28 countries on five conti-
nents. If you want your donation recorded for tax purposes, place your gift in any
blank envelope and mark your envelope number. Make checks out to Good Shepherd
Parish, marked to the Sisters of the Divine Savior in the memo line. Another
missionary group will visit our other church locations on August 15/16.
(4) Thank You of the Week: To Fr. Jack Dickinson for his devoted ministry in
Good Shepherd Parish these last two years. Au revoir – and Thank you!

In 2009, on the feast of SS Joachim and Anne
(July 26), the grandparents of Jesus, Pope
Benedict had a special message for grandparents:
“This feast makes us think about the topic of edu-
cation, which has such an important place in the
pastoral work of the Church. In particular, it
invites us to pray for grandparents who, in the
family, are the depositories and the witnesses of
the fundamental values of life. The educational
task of grandparents is always very important,
and it becomes even more so when, for different
reasons, the parents are not able to ensure an
adequate presence to their children while they are
growing up… May the Virgin Mary who,
according to certain beautiful artistic renderings,
learned to read sacred Scriptures at the knee of
her mother, Anne, help grandparents nourish their
faith and hope at the font of the Word of God.”
Vocations: "Lead a life worthy of the calling to
which you have been called, with all humility and
gentleness.” Have you considered a vocation to the
priesthood, or the consecrated life?

Revision in Diocesan Policy regarding Preparation of Children for the Sacraments
Throughout the Diocese of Portland, beginning this September, every child preparing to receive Recon-ciliation, Confirmation and First Eucharist must com-plete a two-year sacrament preparation process that includes the involvement of parents/guardians. This will provide children with the time needed to learn about and develop a relationship with Jesus, to learn their prayers, to understand and desire the sacra-ments, and to be involved in the church through par-ticipation at Sunday Mass. As parents/guardians, you play the most important role in passing on the faith to your children. We look forward to working with you and will provide materials to help you to be actively involved in preparing your child for the sac-raments and providing them with a foundation to live a life of faith. For more details about our programs or to register your child(ren), please contact Michelle Philbrick at 282-4812x115; [email protected] or visit our website www.goodshepherdparish.us.
