Warm up: Getting away from it all…
Have you ever wanted to escape it all? Have you ever day-dreamed about a place where everything is awesome and perfect? What do you think about and why do you think about these things?
Because who would want this life 24/7?
Europe c.1790-1840• The Industrial Revolution
has changed society– Pollution, endless work– People feel dehumanized
• The Enlightenment Revolutions failed– Congress of Vienna tries
to stop future revolution– People know the
individual has value, but they feel alienated
Romanticism• Artists are the critics of
society• Reacting against the
Enlightenment, failed revolutions, and the Industrialization– Emotion > Reason– Nature > Society
• “Romantic” = idealistic, fantasy, unrealistic
Irrational and Supernatural
Nature• Glorification of Nature– An escape from
Industrialization• Theme of the rugged,
lonely individual
Exoticism
• Exoticism: Interest in exotic, foreign lands– Reflects a desire to
escape from reality– Fuels a desire to acquire
new and different things
Nationalism• NATIONALISM: loyalty
and pride in a nation of people that share common culture and history
• Nationalism led to REVOLUTION– Crushed by Congress of
Vienna/Concert of Europe
– Kept alive in ART!
Nationalism cont. • Glorification of heroes and heroic actions to show pride in your nation
• France c.1848– King Charles X = absolute
monarch– Nationalist revolution
overthrows king and creates a new republic
– Louis-Napoloen (aka Napoleon III) now in charge
