A Mid Summer Night’s Dream produced in the basement of Christ’s Church was an impossible dream. But under the Direction of Professor John Burke, we all accomplished what cannot even be imagined by today’s “On-Stagers”. Working in their gorgeous Rogers Center for Performing Arts, they’ll never know how lucky they are! Beyond the cast parties, I have to certainly give a tip of the hat to Prof. Yvonne Ground who mentored the “Penmen Club” and the school magazine. Through her critical guidance, I was able to become an award winning published author.

Eileen Jennings Address: 1323 Watson Road Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858

Home Phone: (988) 773-5185 Email: [email protected]

Favorite Merrimack Memory:During the hockey games at Phillips Andover, we fought for space in the bathrooms to get warm between periods. I recall Fr. Thabault’s humming during games, with the intensity of the humming changing according to what was happening on the ice. We lived in the new dorms. One time, a student put a dead skunk outside the housemother’s suite. She came out into the lobby just as the guilty student came into the lobby with his date. She complained about the smell. He raved about how someone could do such a terrible thing and offered to remove the skunk. He was the housemother’s favorite student from then on. I have so many more good memories of Merrimack -- fun and serious.

Mary (Dwyer) Jordan Spouse: Thomas Jordan (deceased) Address: 123 Colby Street Bradford, MA 01835

Email: [email protected] Home Phone: (978) 374-6972Favorite Merrimack Memory:My favorite memory was my junior year when I lived in the dorm at MC. My roommate was Peggy Wheeler, and I met so many girls who became lifelong friends. One event that is vivid in my mind was a panty raid. One of my good friends opened the back door to let the guys in. Our housemother hid in her room and locked the door! The raid was unsuccessful so the following day, a group of women marched to the men’s dorm and presented a representative with a token pair of panties. Miss O’Neil requested any girls who participated in the march to turn themselves in. Some freshmen girls did and were punished. The juniors who participated were smart enough to avoid the Dean of Women’s office and escaped punishment.

We had just finished our six week challenging student teaching program and a late March getaway to a tropical island was the perfect break before our last few weeks on campus before graduation. It was my first trip outside the US and it sparked a still strong travel bug that took me two years later from Lawrence to Tokyo where I taught two years for DOD schools, a position I received because of the multi layered education I received at MC.

Favorite Merrimack Memory: I had very nice memories at Merrimack but one which stood out was when I was the equipment manager for the hockey team and we were playing RPI on their ice. RPI was a power house at the time but we had a very good team that year almost beating Providence College which ended up as the best in the East. On our way to RPI our bus broke down and we were stranded in the Berkshires for three hours in below Zero temperatures until another bus picked us up. When we got to RPI our players had to dress up and start the game right away and we got slaughtered. The only fun we had was when the hockey puck bounced off their net into their band’s Sousaphone. We all got up and cheered and we laughed all the way home on the bus.

Favorite Merrimack Memory:My undergraduate years at Merrimack College launched me into a wonderful rewarding 50-year career in education. The rigor of its coursework prepared me well for graduate study and the intellectual stimulation of its faculty inspired me to continue to pursue my interest in Chinese and Japanese studies. During the decades that followed graduation, I have had the opportunity to teach both in New England and in East Asia offering classes at the grade school through college level. I feel especially indebted to the following faculty for refining my academic skills, encouraging me to pursue my dreams and enriching my personal growth: John Spurk, James St. Germain, John Warren, Yvonne Ground, John Valois and Father Donald Burt.

McQuade’s initial introductory speech – “2 hours of homework for every 1 hour of class”. 2.) 1st college party – Christmas break of ’64 in the Student Union. The place was rocking. We even had an “Elvis” performing. 3.) Dearest to my heart – I met my husband here. Our first date was a play put on by the drama club in the basement hall of the church. Next year we will have been married for 50 years.4.) The day John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Nov. 22, 1962, which changed all our lives forever.

John ( Jack) Murphy

Address: PO Box 1163 Lewisburg, TN 37091 Email: [email protected] Cell Phone: (931) 637-1209Favorite Merrimack Memory:The mentoring of Fr. Thomas Burke will always be in my fondest thoughts. I’m grateful that Merrimack allowed me to persevere through my struggles in the engineering program. It allowed many doors to open for me in years following. Playing hockey on the outdoor arena during a school gathering got a bunch of us in trouble and the arena was soon re-moved. Going on ski trips with classmates and then being on the Ski Team was great. I learned to tie a knot in a cherry stem from one of the priest chaperones. Ha. The commute from North Cambridge each day was a challenge but it sure did teach one a whole lot about how to keep a worn out automobile running.

There are so many memories that it would be impossible to choose a favorite...however while browsing through the pictures, I saw the one of the Ten Little Indians - my roommates and I with other friends, that sent me looking through closets trying to find my yearbook! Remembering this brings a smile...as does remembering Mrs. Lamond, the dorm mother, trying to keep all the girls in line...even after a panty raid! Also, who can forget the HiSpot, the favorite gathering place on weekends. Just as important as the fun things, was the good solid education that we received at Merrimack.

The ice sculptures were a first for me as were the beautiful New England falls and the winter aurora borealis. Ski Club, the Onstagers, Glee Club, basketball games, outside hockey games and junior week activities also come to mind. I came to Merrimack College because it was a small Augustinian Catholic College and I am very proud of the education that I received from the Augustinians. There was a very special spirit. Favorite Merrimack Memory:I have many fond memories at Merrimack. Among my fondest are meeting great people with whom I shared academic discussions and played WHIST during lunch in the cafeteria, often with a sandwich in one hand and cards in the other. The Cafe was a pleasant meeting place for conversation, watching General Hospital and playing cards after classes. The old chapel on the second floor of the Union building was a beautiful and inspirational place for a quick prayer and meditation. Surprisingly I enjoyed the challenge of Dr. Warren’s philosophy courses. They were difficult and confusing. I have grown to appreciate them more through the years.

1964Class Officers

“The chief reason for the success of the class of ’64 was its intelligent selection of officers. A senior class needs strong, forceful and unselfish people at its control and these qualities could not be any more evident than in President Joe Chamberlain,

Vice-President Claire Toner, Secretary Mary Shine and Treasurer Paul Bevilacqua.”

• In Memoriam •

In loving memory of our Classmates who have passed:

“For you are infinite and never change. In you ‘today’ never comes to an end:

and yet our ‘today’ does come to an end in you, because

time, as well as everything else, exists in you.”

-St. Augustine
