Undocking the Keyboard The onscreen keyboard usually shows up at the bottom of the screen. But did you know you can move the keyboard? To move the keyboard, follow these steps: 1. Get to a place where the onscreen keyboard appears, like in a new email or Note. 2. Tap and hold the down-keyboard button until the menu pops up. 3. Tap Undock. The keyboard will then float in the middle of the screen. 4. To put it back at the bottom of the screen, tap and hold the down-keyboard button until the menu pops up. 5. Adding Tables to aDocumentIf you have a lot of data in a documentthat you want to keep organized and pre-sentable, or if you want to show statisticsor other numerical data, using tables is agood way to do that.To insert a table, startby tapping the document you want to addthe table to and then follow these steps:

1. To add a table, tap the Plus buttonand then Tables.

2. Swipe left to right to see all theoptions for table styles.

3. Tap the style of table you want toadd.

4. The table will be added to yourdocument.

Splitting the KeyboardAnother cool trick is splitting the key-board in two. (This is helpful for somepeople—it makes it easier for them totype—but harder for others. Try it outand see what works best for you.) Here’show to split the keyboard:

1. Tap and hold the down-keyboardbutton.

2. Tap Split. This moves the key-board to the middle of the screenand breaks it in two.

3. To put it back together, tap andhold the down-keyboard button.

4. Tap Dock and Merge.

Formatting ChartsFormatting charts is similar to formatting images. Start by adding the chartyou want to the document. From there, you can make the following changes:

• To change the size of the chart, tap and hold one of the blue dots. Dragthe chart in to make it smaller or out to make it larger.

• To move it, tap and hold the chart and then drag it to where you want it.Let go when it’s in place.

Drag a blue dot tochange the size of

the chart.

Tap and drag thecenter of a table

to move it aroundthe document.

Select a Chart andtap Edit Data tochange its contents.

Adding Charts to aDocumentAnother great way to add some visualexcitement to your papers, or to show datain interesting ways, is using a chart. Chartslet you show data as colored bars, pies, orlines and are built using your numbers.Toadd a chart to a document, open the docu-ment and then follow these steps:

1. Tap the Plus button.

2. Tap Charts.

3. You can choose from bar or piecharts, or graphs, and in 2D or 3Dstyles. Swipe left and right to seeall the styles and colors available.

4. Tap the style you like and it wil beadded to your document.

Editing Chart DataCharts take numbers and turn them intopictures that make the numbers easy tounderstand. To create a chart you canuse in your documents, you have to editthe chart and add your numbers. To dothat, first create the chart as describedearlier, then follow these steps:

1. To edit the chart, tap it and thentap Edit Data.

2. To add a new column, tap theempty cell at the far end of thechart and type in your text ornumber. To add a new row, tap thecell at the bottom of the list andtype in your information.

3. There are a few ways to editcolumns.Tap the top row justunder Edit Chart Data and a menuappears. From that menu you cantap Insert to add a new column,Paste if you’ve copied data, orDelete to remove the column.Youcan also tap that button and thendrag the column to a new location.

4. You can edit rows in the same way.Tap the button at the edge of therow to bring up the menu that letsyou insert a new row, paste incopied data, or delete the row.Tomove the row to a new location,tap the button and drag it.

5. When you’ve changed all the datayou want to edit, tap Done. Thechart will automatically update.

Adding Shapes to aDocumentYou can also add shapes to your docu-ments to make them more visually inter-esting. To add them, open the documentand then follow these steps:

1. To add a shape, tap the Plus but-ton and then tap Shapes.

2. Swipe left and right to see all thestyles and colors available forShapes.

3. Tap the Shape you like and it willbe added to your document.

Backing Up DocumentsWhen you create a document in Pages,it’s automatically saved on your iPad. Butit’s always a good idea to be safe withyour documents and back them up inanother location, too. Pages offers you afew ways to back up your documents.Begin by opening the document youwant to back up and then follow thesesteps:

1. Tap the wrench.

2. Tap Share and Print.

3. From the drop-down, you canaccess all the backup options. TapSend to iTunes and then choosePages, PDF, or Word format. Thismoves the document to yourcomputer the next time you syncyour iPad (it’s the reverse of whatwe did in the “Syncing Documentsto Your iPad with iTunes” section).

4. Tap Copy to iDisk to save the doc-ument to your iDisk, which is partof your iCloud account. (Checkout Chapter 17’s section on“Backup Using iCloud” for moreon using iCloud for back up.) Ifyou’re not signed in to youriCloud account—which is thesame as your Apple ID—you’llneed to do that before you cansave the document. (There’s alsoanother option—Save toWebDAV—but it’s pretty compli-cated. It’s safe to ignore it.)
