BRILLIANT BARBER &BIDDICK CLEAN UP ATBADBURYRight…I have just about dried outafter a very damp day in Dorset whereonce again Jack Barber and WillBiddick dominated the headlines witha fantastic four-timer at theCountryside Alliance (Wessex) meetingat Badbury Rings.

The feat was even more impressivewhen taking into consideration therewere only six races on the day and Jacksaddled a second in one of the otherraces, whilst Will was ineligible to ridein any of the other races due to his sexand success.

The duo began the day in fine stylethanks to yet another win with SubtleSovereign, making light work of a 6lbpenalty in the opening Club MembersConditions race. Soon after, they hadthe Wessex Area feature race, theBonhams Wessex National MensOpen, in the bag courtesy of PoshTotty’s impressive success.

The rain continued to pour as the daywent on but that wasn’t about to stopthe two Bs - Ask The Weatherman(Restricted) and Montecito (OpenMaiden Conditions) took the final two

contests on the card to cap off amemorable day for trainer and rider. In between the Biddick and Barberbombardment, Sagalyrique landed theLadies Open in game style for AngelaRucker, just holding-off a late chargefrom Ruapehu and Alice Mills, to landyet another top prize for connections.

Elsewhere across the country SamDavies-Thomas went about grabbing ashare of the headlines from hisweighing room compatriot with atreble at Charing’s South East HuntsClub meeting. He was aboard ComeOn You (Club Members Restricted),Minella For Steak (Mens Open) andShutthebackdoor (Club MemberMaiden) respectively to complete afine day at the office. At the Albrighton & Woodland(North) at Chaddesley Corbett JoeO’Shea’s promising mare ExecutiveBenefit regained the winning threadfor Gillon Crow in the Mens Open, whilst jockey Jane Williams got herseason up and running with a double. Her initial success came aboardGrandturgeon in the Ladies Open, before claiming the young horse OpenMaiden on Hazel Hill.Up at the rearranged South DurhamHunt Farmers Club meeting at

Mordon, there were six differentwinning riders, including anotherwinner between the flags for thedefending Amateur Riders ChampionHarry Bannister; his latest successcame aboard Sportingfriendship in theClub Members for Gentleman riders. And last but by no means least, theNorth Norfolk Harriers at Highamwhere the Andrews sisters wereamongst the winners; Gina Andrewsguided Alan Hill’s Broken Eagle to athird success from just four starts, while defending Ladies championBridget took the concluding Restrictedrace on Troufion. And finally, congratulations toRichard Thomas who is the winnerof our Thunder Toffee Vodkacompetition. Jill Dawson, one of Point-to-Pointing'smost prolific-winning lady riders, hasdied at the age of 58 after a long illness.

Jill Grinyer, as she was then, openedher account on Roman Bean at TheCarholme in 1983, and her initialsuccess in the Dawsons' distinctiveorange and black colours was later thatsame season, when she deputised in aWetherby Hunter Chase on YorkshireMariner for her future husband MikeDawson, who was sidelined with abroken wrist.

Witchin, ten times victorious, was thefirst of several multiple scorers, withSweet Diana the biggest contributor toJill's final tally of 162 between the flags. The mare was the Grand Marnierleading horse in 1986, and her total of36 in the Dawson ownership includedthe RMC Ladies' championship atChepstow in 1987, one of a handful ofHunter Chase successes for her rider.

The half-brothers Roscoe Boy andLayedback Jack won 29 between them, and more recently Elaine Wilson'sUpham Lord, trained by Jill to win 25races, 20 of them with his handler inthe saddle, followed in Sweet Diana's

hoofprints by becoming the Horse &Hound Leading Horse in 2002 and2003. The Dawson yard enjoyed itsfourth triumph in the championshipwhen Palypso De Creek took thehonours in 2012/13.

Jill was an acknowledged expert at re-educating difficult horses, andrejuvenating jaded ones. Her chargeswere always immaculately turned out,and there was no question about theirfitness, whether it was their racecoursedebut or their final run of a longcampaign. She had a close associationwith Mark Johnston, a former nearneighbour before his move toMiddleham, who sent young horses tobe prepared to go into training and toover-winter in the Dawsons' fields.

She won the Midlands area title oncountless occasions, and in 1990 shefinished joint runner-up in the nationalladies' championship. Gracious invictory and sporting in defeat, she wasgenerous to a fault, and would be thefirst to offer assistance to anyone whorequired it.

Her final victory was in 2008 on VingisPark at Garthorpe, a course on which

she enjoyed innumerable successes, employing front-running tactics on somany of them, and it was the samehorse on which she had her last ride in2011.

Three years ago she was diagnosed withcancer, an illness which she fought withgreat courage and never-failingoptimism. Her chemotherapy sessionswere invariably followed 24 hours laterby a day's hunting or a spin on thegallops, and her concern was always forothers and never for herself.

She had hoped that Palypso De Creekwould be able to provide her with acomeback ride, and although this wasnot possible, it was her training abilitywhich enabled him to show suchoutstanding form under Claire Hart. Jillwas admitted to hospital beforeChristmas, and just over two weeksbefore she died was able to watch hisWetherby victory from her bed.

The thoughts of all Point-to-Pointfollowers will be with Mike, who wassuch a support to Jill, not only in thelast difficult period of her life, butthroughout her racing career.

A race programming committee hasbeen formed to look at several keyareas of Point-to-Point racing.

Drawn from the sport's stakeholdersand chaired by independent memberDavid Minton, it will look at raceprogramming and conditions andconsider the horse population andmake-up of those taking part asowners, trainers and riders. Those withan interest in the sport will becanvassed or be given a chance tomake their opinions known.

The committee was formed followingan internal paper that was put togetherby the Point-to-Point Authority (PPA)during the summer of 2014. Ithighlighted race planning and penaltystructure, retention of participants, economic impact, communications, sponsorship, costs and relationships, regulation and qualifications, as issuesthat needed to be looked into in orderto encourage people to take part in thesport and attract as many runners aspossible.

Minton's committee consists of theBHA's Richard Russell, Alan Hill forthe MFHA, press officer Matt

Coleman, Nick Bostock for the PPSA,Tik Saunders of the PPORA andPhilip Hall for The Jockey Club.

Following their initial meeting recently,Minton said: "The committee is madeup of a good group of people fromvarious areas of the country, and wehad an array of views at our firstmeeting - our aim is to encouragepeople to get more point-to-pointers.We'll be putting ourselves around tohear what people think."

No time frame has been set for thecommittee to complete its work, although its first recommendationsand report to the PPA Board will havebeen sent by the end of April.

Proposed Aims

• Provide a well-structured model forfixtures that will increase thenumbers of participants and race-goers and thereby underpin thefuture of the sport.

• Improve the average number ofrunners per race

• Create a race programme thatreflects the quality and quantity ofthe available horse population

• Analyse data to highlight theimbalance in the race program inorder to create a revised programmethat offers appropriate balance ofopportunities for horses of differentability.

• Improve competitive nature of races.(Address small fields/short-pricedfavourites)

• Horse Welfare - Prevent largeweights being carried by multiplewinners

• Attract horses that are capable ofsustaining a career in the sport byincreasing opportunities

• Identify horses yet to run under rulesthat could develop from Point-to-Points and vice versa

• Encourage natural progression ofthe horses mental and physicalabilities (it is beneficial for horses ofsimilar experience to compete againsteach other)

• Encourage Flat horses to transfer toPointing

• Guidance on cross referencingbetween areas in order to produce anevenly spread race program.

There was a superb turn out of runnersfor The Jockey Club Maiden Mares'race at Buckfastleigh in Devon onSunday, 15 February.

From an entry of 21, 19 mares weredeclared so the race had to be split andrun in two divisions. This was thesecond time that a division had beenrequired since The Jockey Club begansponsoring contests for maiden mares -the first occasion had been the veryfirst race to come under thesponsorship, held at Barbury Castle in2011.

South Molton's Kayley Woollacotttrained division one winner Miss

Gotaway (ridden by Jamie Thomas) -the runner-up was a hitherto unracedfour-year-old called Frelia, trained inWales by David Gibbs - whileZiggerson Hill (Olivia Hutchings)landed division two for owner/trainerJackie Du Plessis from Plymouth.

The Jockey Club is sponsoring 19 suchraces this season, part of a drive toencourage owners to race mares inorder to improve the breeding stock ofracehorses in Britain. Points areawarded for finishing in the first threein any of the 19 races, and for anysubsequent placings, leading to anoverall champion whose owner ispresented with a trophy at the National

Point-to-Point Dinner & AwardsCeremony.

As part of their prize the owner of thechampion can benefit from The JockeyClub Bonus - any prize money theirmare gains in her first start at a JockeyClub Racecourse will be doubled. Lastyear's champion was Splendid Blue, trained in Northumberland by owner JoBoswell.

The next Jockey Club Maiden Mares'race takes place at Brocklesby Park inLincolnshire on March 1, and continuesat various point-to-point venues aroundBritain until the conclusion at Herefordracecourse on May 31.

Tattersalls Ireland have just launched‘Bidpoint’ and for anyone looking tosource new horses it is an innovativenew way of acquiring form horsesfrom Irish Point-to-Points. Beginningthis weekend horses who are qualifiedfor this initiative will be clearlyidentified by a logo on entries, racecards and results and furthermore itis a way of doing business which couldsee hunt clubs getting a percentage ofthe sale value of horses sold at theirmeeting.

Everyone entering for all Irish Point-to-Points will be given the option to puttheir horses forward for Bidpoint.Every horse in every race canparticipate. Once racing is run thenbidders have until Tuesday at 2pm tolodge a bid via the Tattersalls website

although there will be links from thep2p.ie site to assist this process. Oncebidding closes the vendor will becontacted and advised how much thehighest bid on their horse is and askedif they wish to accept it. They will haveapproximately two hours to do this orelse the bid expires.

The key to the process is two part.Firstly if the vendor does not wish toaccept the deal then they are not madeaware of the identity of the highestbidder. This is an incentive for biddersto participate knowing they can neverbe revealed unless they are actuallygetting to buy the horse. However thevendor advantage is that if they dorefuse the highest bid then no one willknow what the highest bid was. This isbecause once the bid is refused all

bidders, high and low, will be treatedthe same and advised that their bid wasunsuccessful thus ensuring the value ofthe horse remains protected. Neitherparty is charged anything unless a dealis struck so there is no way to lose outusing this system.

Over 25% of all UK Point-to-Pointsare won by ex-Irish Pointers and thiswill serve as something of a networkingtool for those looking to purchase inIreland but not sure where to begin.Once a bid is accepted the purchasercan decide to Vet the horse and can useany vet they wish to carry out thevetting process. Purchasers areprotected by the terms and conditionsof sale and the sale price of the horsewill not be made public so thepurchaser retains an element ofanonymity throughout the process.

For how long have you beentraining? Well I am not sure you wouldcall it training in the beginning but Ibought Hostetler in 2000 for my sonsto ride. Simon was supposed to ride inthis first year but sadly Foot and Mouthprevented him having a race that year(he did ride in the members a couple ofyears later), and then Tom took over –he had been practising the finish of theGrand National on the arms of the sofafor years! I knew nothing when Istarted and was guided by Jenny Garleyand many others.Where are you based? Creaton,Northants – it’s about two miles southof the Guilsborough Point-to-Pointcourse.Do you combine training withanother job or profession? Yes, Iteach four days a week at a largecomprehensive school in Leicester.Working with teenagers is great, ifoccasionally challenging, and it keepsme young! Luckily I have great back upat home, Kim Pestell, who picks up thepieces if necessary, and great workriders, mostly Leah Rowlands and JoeCarden. All the mucking out etc. getsdone before work, so I have to be verycareful not to appear in the classroomstinking of horses. What training facilities do you haveavailable? At home we have a largeflattish grass field where we have ourschooling fences and a steep grass hill.We are lucky as Caroline Bailey andStuart Morris have all-weather gallopsnearby which they kindly let us usewhen the weather prevents us using ourgrass. For the final touches we useHeather Kemp’s all-weather gallop orthe Links at Newmarket and then ofcourse, there is hunting with thePytchley - variety is the spice of life. How many horses do you train? Thisyear we have three in the yard startingwith Emperor Concerto who is owned, ridden and looked after by Sarah Pestell;this will be her first season pointing.Victor Grumps, who is well-knownaround the Midlands pointing circuit; heis owned, and will be ridden by, DanielCherriman, our huntsman, also his firstseason pointing. And last but no meansleast, my Life Long, who is ridden byFaye Conway my (sort of!) daughter-in-law.Are you from a racing background? My grandfather was an amateur jockey. One of my earliest memories is ofsitting with him on Saturday afternoonswatching racing on a crackly black andwhite tele whilst he rang his bookie. Irecently found some photo albumsfrom the other side of my family andfound pictures of my great unclewinning at the Middleton in 1923, andmy grandmother riding side-saddle in

the Ladies at the Sinnington in 1924 –bowler hat and cut-and-laid hedges. What was the first winner you sentout – name, owner, rider, date, course? Protagonist owned by mysister Etta Madocks Wright, ridden byHannah Watson at Brampton Bryan inMarch 2007. There is of course a storyattached … My sister is Master of theQuorn and I was keen to win theirMember’s race for her as the cup ispresented in memory of her latehusband Kenwynn. My son, Tom,recommended Protagonist, as he hadridden him under Rules. I didn’t wantto run him for the first time in front ofthe locals so went off to BramptonBryan as I had no idea how good hewas. I saw he was second going intothe last and could not see the finish sopresumed he was second. After a longdeliberation it was announced that he’dd won, which was fantastic andcompletely undexpected. However, itmeant we had a large penalty in theMembers but they still managed to winit -a very emotional day for the family.Of which horse performance areyou most proud? This is impossible toanswer – I love having horses that havelost their way under Rules who thenfind success when pointing. We havehad many through the yard who findour way less stressful than in a big yardand the smiles on their faces when theysucceed is worth a lot.Did you race-ride before you startedtraining? No, but always rode as achild. The competitive side of me waskindled when I coxed a successful WestAustralian rowing crew.Which jockeys do you use regularly?I mostly have novice riders in the yardwho own, look after and ride their ownhorses. I get huge pleasure in givingyoung people a chance in our sport. Ifigure that a lot of people have givenmy son a chance in racing, for which Iam very grateful, and I would like togive the same to others. Camilla Cottonand Faye Conway have had their firstwinner for us and Lucy Wheeler andLutie Akinci two other who are makinga name for themselves with othertrainers. What car do you drive? Ford Ranger;it’s brilliant, it goes fast when I am latefor work and at other times carries ahuge bale of straw on the back. Thekids at school laugh at me and say:“Errr Miss do you work on a farm, yourtruck is filthy?!”What kind of music do you like?Chris Evans’ selections on Radio 2 inthe morning – changes me from atrainer to a teacher in 40 minutes everymorning.Describe your perfect night in andperfect night out: Perfect night in is

very boring - supper, tele, and then bed(early). Perfect night out is on a Sundayevening after racing; we all gather atThe Pytchley in West Haddon for foodon a Sunday and discuss our days fromaround the country. What has been your funniestincident at the races? It wasn’t veryfunny at the time, it was very stressful.A horse called Zacharova belonging toJulian Taylor came to our yard tosweeten up. He had refused to racetwice but had talent. We spent monthspersuading him that he was not aracehorse but had a target of thePytchley Members. The day before therace I washed him and put a Thermatexrug on. Unbeknownst to me that isexactly what had happened to himpreviously so consequently on the dayof the race he completely refused tocome out of his stable. With a lot ofTLC from he was eventually persuadedout and arrived at the course in thenick of time to see the houndsparading so he thought he was hunting. He started and won (well ridden by SamDavies-Thomas). The funnier side ofthe story was that the bookies did notrate me so he was sent off at very longodds. Most of the Pony Club, myfriends and many others made a lot ofmoney, by pointing standards. Peoplestill come up to me thanking me andhim for making their day. What ambitions do you have inracing? I always like to target a certainrace for each horse/jockey combinationand work towards it. This year’s targetswill be kept under wraps in case I fluffit! I keep trying to remind myself thatwe do this for fun, but a smile on thejockeys and parents faces is success. What are your favourite courses andmeetings - and why? I love all thelocal meetings as Pointing people aregreat to be around. What developments do you thinkwould benefit the sport in thefuture? I would love the safety factor inNovice Rider races to be reduced. They often have big fields and while thehorses know what they are doing, manyriders are not too sure. It would bebetter to have two races with smallerfields than one large one – I am suremothers would feel happier. Also, andthis is a bit more radical, I would likenovice riders who had never won arace, to be given a 3lb allowance whenriding in Open or Confined/Club races.I think riders can learn more about raceriding in those races and it would be away of encouraging people to give themrides.Who has helped you on the way? Abig thanks to all (too many to mention)who have helped and to those who runPointing.

CONNOLLY’S RED MILLS PRECISIONNUTRITION SERIES 2014/15Albrighton Woodland (North) at Chaddesley Corbett | Sunday, 22 February

It was third time lucky for owner CliveBennett when Iberico, trained byKirsty Adcock, landed the spoils atChaddesley Corbett, with the judge’sverdict being a nose after the nine-year-old, who was giving 5lbs to all hisrivals, had got up in the last strides.“I’ve lost out in two close finishes thisseason, and I thought the same thingwas going to happen,” he laughed.Clive is now spoilt forchoice, with two horsesqualified for the final, theother being Rye Cross,runner-up in the Connolly’sIntermediate at Barbury inDecember. “Hopefully I’llrun one of them,” he said, pointing out that Ibericowould appreciate muchbetter ground than thatwhich he encountered onthis occasion.Iberico’s jumping has beenless than fluent in the pastdue to back problems, butmassage and plenty ofjumping to build up hismuscles seem to have donethe trick. He was the lasthorse to join the Bennettsfrom Padge Berry, fromwhom Clive and his wifeEileen have had many goodperformers over the years. The winner was partnered,as he was in his two victoriesin 2014, by farrier CharlieDando, who expressed hisgratitude for theopportunity, as his workcommitments leave him littletime for riding out.

Trainer Sam Allwoodprofessed himself delightedwith the performance ofrunner-up Johnny Og, butthe six-year-old is an unlikelyparticipant in the final. “He’smuch better on soft ground, which you don’t often get atthat [Cheltenham] meeting,so we need to crack on with him now,”explained Sam.Johnny Og is leased until the end ofthe season from Martin Keighley byDave Bostock, who has supportedSam since he started training, andMark Astbury, who is responsible forSam’s website.“He was quite poor when we gothim,” Sam continued. “He hadn’t had

a break for a long time, so he hadplenty of time at grass and we fed himup. He works well at home and getshimself fit, but he’s a stressy traveller.”Sam himself rode over 70 winners asan amateur, but at 6’3” tall wasstruggling with the weight so has nowretired from the saddle. Ironically he’snow lighter than he was in his riding

days, but he admitted “I was goingnowhere as a jockey,” so he isconcentrating on training and isleaving the steering to Josh Guerriero, whose day job is assistant trainer toDan Skelton.

There are no current plans for thirdhome Kazuri Kate to receive aCheltenham entry, for the simple

reason, said trainer-rider Claire Hart, that she’s so tiny. “We might changeour minds, but she’s only 15.2,although she thinks she’s 17 hands,”laughed Claire, who is more likely tocampaign the mare in Ladies’ races.“She’s a little star who loves herracing.”Now owned by Claire’s uncle, Simon

Hart, with Robert and JanetBartlett, Kate was purchasedfor £1,000 as a yearling froman advert in Horse & Houndmagazine by Claire, whospotted that she was a half-sister to Kiama, a successfulPointer for owner RoseVickery and rider PollyGundry.“We wanted to call herKazuri, which is Swahili for‘small and beautiful,’ but thename was taken, so as shewas called ‘Kate’ when wegot her, we just put the twotogether,” Claire expounded.

Willie Bryan, trainer andjoint-owner, with his father-in-law David Smith, offourth placed Overafrica, hasthe final in mind for the sonof Overbury, on the provisothat he returns to the formwhich he showed last season, when he scored four times.“The horses haven’t beenquite right,” Willie said, “butthey do seem to be gettingbetter,” a fact borne out bythe results at Chaddesley, where the stable’s other threerunners providedconnections with twovictories and a secondplacing.Described by Willie as “alovely horse, with plenty ofcharacter,” Overafrica waspartnered by the trainer’s sonPeter, 17, and is often riddenat home by the latter’syounger brother Josh. The

siblings clocked up numerous PonyRacing successes between them, butthere will be no rivalry for rides in ayear’s time, when Josh will be 16.He is going as an apprentice withAndrew Balding, while Peter, whoworks for his uncle, Peter Bowen, willremain with the jumpers, no doubtwith his father’s winning tally of 75 afuture target.

RIDER PROFILELEO MAHON

The name Mahon is synonymous withPoint-to-Pointing, because it was Jim

Mahon who was one of the foundersof the Point-to-Point Owners'Association, later to encompass‘Riders' in its title, in 1977.

His son Gabe followed in his

footsteps by becoming a successfulowner, trainer and rider, and Jim

would doubtless be delighted that thenext generation - professional jockeyRyan, twins Ella (retired from race-riding) and Lara, and Leo - is carryingon the tradition. He might, however,be slightly perplexed that the latter, described by Lara's boyfriend WillTelfer as "a naturally talented rider,"does not receive the number of ridesdeserving of his ability.

That, though, is mainly by design. Leo,who did an Agriculture and FarmBusiness Management course atCirencester, has returned to work onthe family farm with its 1700 acres, and in addition the Mahons have sixPointers at home. "I'd hope that if Irode out for other yards I might getmore support, but I don't have muchtime to travel round, so I can't expect

people to give me rides," he reasonablypoints out.

Leo, now 20, enjoyed a successfulPony racing career, winning the WestMidlands area title, and from the ageof 11 was riding out the Pointers athome. He made his Point-to-Pointdebut on Lemonfield at Cold Harbourin 2010, finishing fifth in theRestricted, and the following seasonopened his account on Golden Harveyat Eyton.

2012 was his best year to date, with sixvictories from just ten rides. Includedamong the half dozen was his initialdouble at Holnicote courtesy of LakeLegend and My Way De Solzen. "Thatwas really memorable, to beat[Richard] Barber horses," he recalled, although his delight was obviouslytempered by the imposition of a fine

for some over-enthusiastic use of thewhip.

He shares the training at home withElla, who admits that her youngerbrother can be very bossy. "I do argueoccasionally but it's not usually worthit - Leo's way is the only way!" shelaughed.

According to Will Telfer it is Ella whodoes more than her share before shegoes off to her day job as DanSkelton's secretary, but he admits thatLeo's work ethic has improvedconsiderably in the last couple ofyears, "You couldn't get him out ofbed in the mornings," grinned Will,

"and he could barely tack up so hissisters had to do it for him!"

Leo's aim for this season is to betterhis 2012 total, and he is lookingforward to a debut ride at Cheltenhamon the aforementioned Lake Legend, who has a prep run at Ludlow today.Acquiring a Category ‘B' licence is onhis agenda, and looking further intothe future he would like to take out apermit to train.

Leo can be contacted on 07961101795, and no doubt anyone forwhom he rides a winner will beexpected to celebrate in style, becausethe jockey owns that there is nothinghe likes more than a good party!

SAM WALEY-COHENA half-century under Rules by Carolyn Tanner

Sam Waley-Cohen completed a half-century under Rules when steeringPaint The Clouds to victory in theBetbright Open Hunters' Chase atDoncaster on Wednesday.

For Sam, racing is a hobby, unlikemany of his amateur contemporarieswho work full-time in the sport. Hisday job is running PortmanHealthcare, a chain of dental practices.

His initial success on a licensed trackwas in an Amateur Riders' Hurdle atKelso in 2003 on Moscow Dancer, trained by Peter Monteith.

Since then there have been countlesshigh-profile victories, the major onebeing that of his father Robert's LongRun in the 2011 Cheltenham GoldCup, plus two King George VI Chaseson the same horse.

His Aintree record is second to none, and includes three Fox Hunter Chasetriumphs, on Katarino (2005 and2006) and Warne (2014), a TophamChase victory in 2006 on Liberthine, and a 2014 Becher Chase success onOscar Time, on whom he finishedrunner-up in the 2011 Grand Nationaland fourth in 2013.

Sam also has 80 Point-to-Pointwinners under his belt.

RECENT LANDMARKSJockeys firsts, doubles and other career highs by Carolyn Tanner

Sam Davies-Thomas recorded hisinitial treble at Charing to take his tallybetween the flags to 42.

The first leg came in the Restricted onthe Nick Pearce-trained Come OnYou, who had been unluckily carriedout by a loose horse on his previousouting at Godstone. Although themargin of victory was comfortable inthe end, Sam reported that he was thehardest work of his three winners.“He was on and off the bridle all thetime.”

Sam followed up in the 3m4f Men’sOpen, the Kent Grand National, onKelly Morgan’s Minella For Steak, whomade all the running, and made it aMorgan family double whencompleting the treble onShutthebackdoor, trained by Kelly’sbrother Tom.

Sam, 23, opened his account onModerano at North Carlton in 2011.He is an apprentice saddler at HarleyEquestrian, a company which hasstrong links with Point-to-Pointing

through its sponsorship of the NoviceRider series.

Malcolm Mallow, 22, enjoyed a dreamdebut when landing the Novice Riders’race at Higham on Banksandditches, trained by Martin Ward, who obtainedhis number from an advertisementplaced on a Point-to-Point website.

Malcolm originally trained as a chef, but after three years decided toconcentrate on horses and got a job atNunnery Stud, near Thetford. Hecompleted a foundation course at theBritish Racing School, where he wasmale trainee of the year in 2013, andspent 12 months with Robin Dickinbefore moving closer to home – hisparents live in Essex, near SaffronWalden – and he has been based atLucy Wadham’s Newmarket yard sincelast year.

Sam Welton, 25 later this week, gavehimself an early birthday present whenscoring his first Point-to-Point victory

on his mother Valerie’s Oscar Flyer inthe 3m Maiden at Mordon.

Sam must rank as one of the mostexperienced novice riders in thecountry, having ridden three winnersas a Conditional before reverting toamateur status last year. Afterattending the British Racing School hewent to Ferdy Murphy, and then toGeorge Moore, with whom he spentfour years and rode one winner, plus ahandful of placings, from around 20rides.

He eventually moved to David Pipefor 18 months and added another twosuccesses prior to moving back toYorkshire. He now works for DavidBarron, and also rides out for LynneWard.

Oscar Flyer was spotted at ExeterHorse Sales by Sam’s partner CarolynWoods, herself a former Pipeemployee and winning Point-to-Pointrider, who purchased him for £180from the abattoir shortly before hewas due to be put down.

Who was capturing the action last weekend?

A busy but predominately wetweekend for our film crews andphotographers this weekend but asever they battled on regardless. TimHolt was at a very damp BadburyRings to capture the stills at theCountryside Alliance (Wessex)meeting, as was Jeff Guyett of WestCounty Videos who was on hand to

film proceedings at the Dorset venue.Jeff also sent a crew to the equally wetAlbrighton & Woodland (North)meeting at Chaddesley Corbett, wherethey were joined by photographer PhilBritt.Elsewhere at the rearranged SouthDurham Hunts Club meeting atMordon snappers Peter Barber and

Nina Edminson were both inattendance where they were alsojoined by Keith Simpson who was onhand to film the events as theyunfolded. Last but by no means leastand the South East regular JulieDrewett was the sole photographerpresent at the South East Hunts Clubat Charing.
