The Depths of GoodnessI was raised like a lot of kids from the Baby

Boomer generation. I had two parents who worked hard, followed the rules, paid their taxes and taught their children right from wrong. The values of being a good person were instilled in each of us, whether we liked it or not. Being a good person meant that you didn’t lie, cheat or steal to get what you wanted.

The greatest reward of doing the right thing was receiving the approval and praise from the two people I depended on and respected most: my parents. Of course, the inverse was also true as I recall a conversation I had with my best friend Vince when we were about 9 years old. We talked about the greatest punishment of all; which wasn’t the spankings, the long lectures or the grounding we’d have to endure, it was the awful look of disappointment we got from our dad’s when we screwed up…yikes!

Unlike many kids, I got into more trouble and mischief just prior to becoming a teenager. I found that testing the limits of my parent’s patience had become a strange source of entertainment, especially during the long summer months when I had far too much time and imagination to just be good for goodness sakes. The craving for approval from my parents had slowly shifted to earning the respect and admiration from peers who followed George Thorogood’s creed a decade before his famous song was released: Bad to the Bone. Fortunately, that phase was a relatively short period of time; however, if my parents were still alive, they might respectfully disagree with that observation.

By the time I reached my teens, I had caused enough chaos that made me feel a strange sense of peace and satisfaction. Plus, I figured that my three older sisters had given my parents more

than enough grief during their teenaged years. They spent so much time raising hell that I thought it might be time to lower heaven for the poor old folks who had aged faster than a U.S. President.

Looking back, I now realize that I merely learned the superficial benefits of being a good and honest person. During my entire childhood, my choices, good and bad, were externally driven with the primary payoff being the respect and approval from others. Nowadays, the ultimate gift of making healthy decisions has become internally driven. Each time I do something that has a positive and

profound impact on others; I always feel an immeasurable sense of inner gratification.

If your life is not everything you want it to be, don’t give in to despair or frustration. Examine your motives and determine if they are internally or externally driven. If they’re external and you’re craving the approval of others, knock it off. Why? Because my dad may be glaring down at you with the look! In all seriousness, give yourself the ultimate gift and break free from the prison of external approval by casting out the negative thoughts that say you’re not good enough. Instead, replace them with positive thoughts that affirm the amazing and powerful human being that

you really are.

Developing the Leader in EVERY Teen TodayBy Bob Cox

“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.”

This might sound like something we would hear today on CNN, but it’s actually thought to originate from ancient times and has been credited to either Plato or Socrates. According to Quote Investigator, the quote was crafted by a student, Kenneth John Freeman, for his Cambridge dissertation published in 1907 on the conflicts between parents and their children in the era of these famous philosophers. No matter the origin, the quote illustrates the ongoing chasm between gen-erations.

Teens always have and always will need guidance, support and encouragement. Parents often feel overwhelmed when faced with this task. Additionally, teens need enlightened teachers to make healthy choices that will lead our future generations in the coming years. Fortunately, here in Sacramento, we have an organization called National Teen Lead-ership Program (NTLP) that focuses on building teens up from the inside out. Laura Segura founded NTLP over 20 years ago and has worked tirelessly to help teenagers develop the qualities to live their dreams.

The positive results from NTLP have been impressive and eye opening. Over 10,000 alumni have enjoyed NTLP camps over the past 20 years. These young leaders have become out-standing role models for society and play a vital role in the on-going success of NTLP. Additionally, hundreds of alumni return every year to volunteer their support by giving back to the next generation.

I spoke with Laura recently to find out more about her exciting program.

Q: When did NTLP begin and how did you get involved?Laura: The first program was held in 1992. I had a back-

ground as a meeting planner and was asked to coordinate a camp for teenagers. The thought of being engulfed by 200 teenagers made me really nervous. But when I went on site to run the pro-gram I found myself surrounded by young people who were ar-ticulate, altruistic and educated. They were so enthusiastic that I came away with a totally different experience than I had ex-pected. The program became a passion for me because each year I see so much hope for the future in the teens I meet. You hear people talking about the state of the world and how terrible it’s

going to be and when I come off of camp after three days, I think rather proudly to myself, “These are the young people that are go-ing to be running the world.”

Q: What’s the overall expe-rience like at an NTLP summer camp?

Laura: Teens stay in the dorms on a university campus, eat dorm food, use the theatre, classrooms and student union and get a sense of what it’s like to go to college. That’s an experience in itself. Plus, we have three motivational speak-ers and I think that’s key because not all speakers may strike the right

chord in everyone. This year we have Scott Greenberg, a cancer survivor, who talks about overcoming obstacles and has a really good way of taking teen problems and putting them into per-spective. Our second speaker, Calvin Terrell, talks about bullying, prejudice and stereotyping. He’s not a ‘motivational’ speaker: his purpose is to talk about issues in the world and how this genera-tion needs to step up, be aware of their own prejudices and biases and become an ally to those who are suffering.

Q: What’s the third speaker like?Laura: Family and friends get to hear our final speaker along

with the teens during our closing Awards Program. We have a very interesting speaker this year in Sacramento. Mike Smith is a self-described, low achiever in high school: a skater dude. There isn’t space to tell his full story here, but suffice it to say he managed to take his love of skateboarding and turn it into a non-profit that helps the homeless. He’s young and passionate and he’s got this

leaders of our nation in the 2lst century. In an age where teens are curious and experimental, NTLP gives them something positive to experiment with — their future. NTLP challenges, empowers, and provides them with skills and motivation necessary to become suc-cessful in their chosen field, and with the incentive and vision to become responsible citizens, resist negative peer pressure and be the leaders of tomorrow.

NTLP is enrolling now: Southern California, Loyola Mary-mount, July 26 – 28, and CSU Sacramento, August 2 – 4. Space is LIMITED, so don’t delay. For more information about NTLP, call Laura Segura or Jennifer Lopez at (916) 932-2338. You can also email NTLP at [email protected] or visit their website at www.ntlp.org. Tune into 1talknetwork.com at 1pm on Saturday, May 4 to hear Laura and Jennifer talk more about NTLP.

Developing the Leader in EVERY Teen Todayunique story about how he was able to focus on a dream, achieve it and help others in the process. I think he’ll be a very appealing presenter.

Jennifer: We have such a wide audience, 8th - 12th graders. They are all in such different places in their lives. I think Mike will inspire them to realize that every single teen can become a leader and every teen can have a positive impact on someone or some-thing in the world.

Q: Jennifer, what is your background and how did you wind up working for NTLP?

Jennifer: I am also an event planner. Laura hired me to assist with the 20th Anniversary celebration last year. I started last April and my son went to camp in August. Because of what he gained from the program, I made the decision to put my time, effort and energy into helping NTLP grow and reach as many teens as pos-sible. So not only was it a life-changing event for my son, but because of his positive experience, I made the decision that this is where I am supposed to be as well.

Q: Who are the members of your staff at the program?Laura: All of our staff are alumni. They must have attended

NTLP, graduated high school and completed a year of work expe-rience or college in order to qualify. More importantly, they pay their own room, board and travel expenses to do this: to come back and give to the next generation. It’s been that way every year for 20 years. The majority of our Board, including our Board Chair are alumni of NTLP.

Q: What are the biggest take-aways for the students and their parents?

Laura: I think we send home a young adult who is more open-minded, motivated and inspired to give back; to their community, to their school, to their family. I think they feel lifted up; are more aware of the words they use and whether they use those words to build people up or put people down. We do a lot of team-building and work on interpersonal skills. We want them to feel on top of the world when they go home. A lot of teens talk about this as a life-changing experience. Parents write that they return more focused, self-confident, more….positive. They seem happier and want to get more involved in clubs or sports or give back to their community.

Jennifer’s son went through the program last summer and she has a great perspective as a parent of an already motivated and involved teen.

Jennifer: My son is one of those teens that is extremely outgo-ing and exhibits a ton of leadership potential and skills. I wanted him to go because I thought he would learn a few things and have some fun. What I didn’t expect was the intensely deep impact it had on my son’s heart. He got all the basics: leadership skills, mo-tivation and realized that he could make an impact, but more than anything he got a sense of appreciation for his life and the role that he could play in other people’s lives. He had a real life-changing moment that brought us to tears when he shared that he didn’t realize how many kids are really hurting and how just smiling at one person can make a difference. Overall, I would say my son came away with a greater sense of appreciation for his life, deeper insight into the trouble that other teens have and a desire to be a better person by reaching out to other people that aren’t as fortu-nate as he is. It really helped him put his problems into perspective and to realize that he could achieve everything he wanted to.

Q: Do you have any closing thoughts?Laura: Today’s teens need training, guidance, support and en-

couragement to make the right choices as successful and caring

Alumni are eager and excited to give back to the next generation of leaders.

What IF a three-day weekend could become a turning point for teenagers; a life-affirming experience that changed the way they thought about themselves and, more importantly, those around them? What if, in just one weekend, they could acquire leadership skills that they’d use the rest of their lives?

Since 1992, NTLP has hosted over 10,000 middle and high school-age students. Over 25% experience NTLP multiple times while in school and each year, hundreds of college and college-graduate alumni return at their own expense to mentor and lead the next generation of future leaders.

Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that integrate very suc-cessfully to the bone where there is a missing tooth. They are the closest thing we can get to a natural tooth and have now become the standard of care (Figure1). The technology is backed by over 30 years of research and has a suc-cess rate of over 95%.

Q: Are dental implants a better so-

lution to missing teeth than a bridge or dentures?

A: Yes. Dentures are very uncom-fortable and also inconvenient because they need to be removed when not in use. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring to adjacent teeth but we need to grind down those adjacent teeth in order to hold it in place. Most bridges only last 5-10 years and then needs to be replaced. Implants on the other hand, feel just like a tooth and can be taken care like a natural tooth as well. Best of all, having an implant maintains the bone level around the missing tooth. This is important because losing more bone tends to weaken ad-jacent teeth and puts these teeth at risk for being lost in the future. Implants won’t need to be replaced as long as they’re taken really good care of. They should last a lifetime!

Q: Have you always offered pa-tients the option of getting implants or is this a new option?

A: This is something new that we’re offering based on the need of our pa-tients. We have a specialist who works at our office who performs the surgery and once this stage is complete we place the tooth portion on top of the implant.

Q: I’ve heard people with dentures complain that they can’t bite into harder foods like steak and apples. Do implants eliminate those problems?

A: Yes, implants will help address those issues. A lot of denture wearers will tell you that having a couple of implants hold their denture in place completely

changed what they can eat. In fact, many of these patients are enjoying foods that they haven’t had in years.

Q: What are your patient’s most common fears about getting implants?

A: A lot of patients fear two things, cost and surgery. Our office is focused on reducing both. With implants being so popular and competition so high, a lot of implant companies had to come out with better, less expensive materials. This brought the cost down significantly. Den-tal insurances are now beginning to cov-er implant procedures, which is reducing the cost as well. Lastly, our implant spe-cialist uses newer techniques that are a lot less invasive than they used to be and this has significantly reduced the recovery time. We’ve tried to improve these issues so that our patients can choose the best option and not have to wear uncomfort-able dentures or have to sacrifice tooth structure to replace teeth.

Q: It sounds like the new implant technology is less painful on the body and the checking account?

A: Yes, with recent changes, the implant procedure will result in a less invasive and costly procedure to replac-ing teeth. Dentures and bridges will be a thing of the past.

Car Tech TalkIs your car up in the air?

As we get closer to the summer months, many of us are busy preparing for an extend-ed road trip. It’s always a good idea to have your trusted professional mechanic to look over your car thoroughly before you leave your driveway. Here are a few things to pay particular attention to:

• Check Tire Inflation & Condition: Hot summer temperatures equals higher road temperature surfaces and longer trips at freeway speeds build more heat in the tires. Also, tires that are under-inflated will run hotter, leading to tire failure. I recommend that you take your vehicle in to your trusted shop, get the car in the air and ask them to look at each tire carefully. While you’re there, make sure all your tires are rotated 360 degrees. When the car is in the air, you get a true look at the condition of the tires. You might have a spot that’s bad but is not visible when the car is on the ground. This may lead you to falsely believe that your tires are okay when they’re really not.

• Check Entire Cooling System: Make sure your cooling system is topped off. If you notice that it is a little low, you may want to look for signs of leaks. If you notice a crusty appearance around the hose connections, that’s a pretty good sign of potential problems.

• Overall Inspection: Before any long trip, you should do a quick inspection of the overall car. Make sure you don’t have any fresh leaks where you normally park your car. Also, make sure your oil is full and fresh. If your car has 100,000 or

more miles on it, check your transmission and differen-tial fluids. Finally, it would be a good idea to repair

those little bulls-eyes on your windshield or have the windshield replaced. Small cracks can quickly be-come big cracks on long hot

summer days and long trips on the highway increase the odds

of road debris flying into your windshield.
