GENEVA – The schoolyear might be winding downin May, but that is whenYvette Ihrig is increasing thepace of updating computersin time for Geneva District304’s next school year.

Ihrig, a district computertechnician, worked like anaccountant during tax seasonbefore Geneva schools start-ed Aug. 21.

“My summer is basical-ly getting ready for the nextschool year,” Ihrig said.“January is when we startplanning, May, we are goinginto production, when deci-sions [are being made] andbudgets are being passed.”

The district has 3,500computers – 800 of them arenew – and they all need newsoftware installed. The olderones need updates, and someneed to be customized forteachers’ specific needs. Andthey all operate on a wirelesssystem.

A decision was made to goto a new operating system, soIhrig said she had to order anew version of the softwareso it would be compatible.Ensconced in a small techlab at Geneva High School,Ihrig has several new laptopsplugged in and receiving newprograms and settings fromthe district’s server whileshe works on one manually.

“ I w o r k b e h i n d t h escenes,” Ihrig said. “I amcustomizing the settings fora teacher right now. OnceI’m done installing all mysoftware and refining all mysettings, I then will take hismachine. … I will copy a fileover to our network, and Iwill push it out to all thesecomputers.”

It takes eight hours to getone computer customized forone teacher if done manual-ly, she said.

For exam p le , E ng l ishteachers need different edu-cational software than mathteachers, chemistry teachersneed different education-al software than music orFrench teachers, she said.Also required for customiz-ing are printers and wirelessprojectors. Rather than man-ually customize each one, shedoes what is called imaging

– setting up a master or tem-plate for each department,putting it on the server, andthen downloading to eachcomputer.

“We can’t say, ‘Here yougo,’ out of the box,” Ihrigsaid. “There is a lot of back-ground.”

All the new software be-ing installed in the newcomputers also is installedon the older computers, Ih-rig said, because everythingneeds to be updated.

So Ihrig shortens the pro-cess by copying files that arestandard for each group ofteachers. And Ihrig said shehas to do this for the begin-ning of every school year.

“And the reason why – letme give you an example: Wehave program called AdobeFlash. A new version of thatwill come out every threemonths. It’s an upgrade forthat software. … It never

ends,” she said.W e b b r o w s e r s a l s o

change, she said.“If we don’t upgrade our

computers, then it doesn’twork,” Ihrig said. And whilethe big push to get ready isfrom May through August,Ihrig said the rest of theschool year is spent on main-tenance.

“Like an accountant do-ing taxes, ‘You have thisnew tax break, or this wasamended,’ it’s the same forthe computer,” Ihrig said.“If your computer is 5 yearsold – that’s old for a comput-er. Five years does not seemlike a long time, but from thetechnology standpoint, it is.”

Teachers who project alesson from the computer forall students to see also canuse the district’s server tosave it and use again withthe next class, she said. Thelesson is marked with a code,

so the teacher can retrieve itfrom the thousands of filessaved to the district’s server.

Ihrig said using electron-ics to preserve lessons andallow teachers to access

what they need is reducingthe amount of paper andbooks schools used to re-quire.

“It’s very green,” Ihrigsaid.

Kent Mutchler received anadditional $9,000 into a tax-de-ferred annuity in his new con-tract, in recognition of his per-formance the previous year,

according to the contract ex-tension recently released.

Mutchler gets $5,000 con-tributed to the tax-deferredannuity every year as part of

his compensation, board pres-ident Mark Grosso said. Theannuity is a 403D, comparableto a 401K in private industry,he said.

The additional money is areflection of Mutchler’s goodwork, Grosso said, especial-ly the state-required teacherevaluation process withouthiring any extra employees todo it.

“The implementation ofthat teacher evaluation withno increase in head count,”Grosso said. “That would havebeen a huge hit on our budget.”

Mutchler was credited forthe $375,000 Readiness andEmergency Management forSchools for a multiagency di-saster training drill, and im-provement in student academ-ic achievement, Grosso said.

“That $9,000 was a perfor-mance stipend,” Grosso said.“We would like to trend to-ward more performance-basedcompensation with less off thebase. If performance is verywell, we got a reward, and wehope this trickles down.”

The board approved hiscontract extension in a 5-2vote Aug. 26. In it, Mutchlerreceived a 2.5 percent pay in-crease to more than $203,720for the current school year and

an extension of his five-yearcontract by one year to June30, 2018. The previous con-tract listed his base salary as$198,751.

The previous one-year con-tract extension was approvedApril 8. Grosso said the boardwas dealing with the teachercontract and other issues, andheld back finalizing Mutch-ler’s contract extension.

Grosso said the additionalmoney goes into Mutchler’spersonal retirement accountand is not counted towardearnings for state pension pur-poses, saving taxpayers somemoney on those pension costs.

Mutchler’s vacation wasreduced to 25 days from 30,and allows him to accumulatesome of them and sell someback to the district at a pro-rat-ed cost, according to the con-tract.

Mutchler was given achoice to buy the 2006 Fordmini van the district leased forhim when he came here.

With the board’s encour-agement, Grosso said Mutch-ler paid $4,500 for the van,which has 125,000 miles on it.In exchange for not having topay vehicle expenses, the dis-trict will pay him $800 a monthfor his travel expenses.

GENEVA – Two housescaught fire about 20 minutesapart in Geneva on Aug. 30

when severe weather passedthrough the area in the eve-ning, Geneva Fire Departmentofficials said in a news release.

No injuries were reported.The first fire was report-

ed about 7:18 p.m. in the 900block of Sunset Road. Thehomeowner reportedly heardlightning strike, saw flamesfrom the kitchen window andleft through the front door to a

neighbor’s home.Officials reported that upon

arrival, firefighters saw flameson the south side of the homealong the wall of an attachedgarage. Firefighters quickly ex-

tinguished the flames and vent-ed the house after learning itsgas line was damaged, officialssaid.

Officials determined light-ning either struck the supplyline or a nearby tree, thus dam-aging the piping and ignitingthe escaping gas, according tothe release. Nicor Gas report-edly made temporary repairsto the damaged piping.

Damage to the house waslimited to burnt siding andsome smoke damage to the in-terior, officials reported.

Meanwhile, a second housefire was reported about 7:42p.m. in the 1500 block of KeimCircle, where smoke and flameswere visible from the roof, andneighbors tried to control theblaze with a garden hose fromthe front yard, officials said.

Fire damage was limited tothe roof, which was apparent-ly struck by lightning, officialssaid, adding the second floorbeneath the affected area sus-tained water damage.

The residents exited thehouse before firefighters ar-rived, officials said.

Units from Batavia, St.Charles, Elburn, Fermilab,North Aurora, South Elgin andWest Chicago assisted the Ge-neva Fire Department.

Members of other fire de-partments Aug. 31 – includingBatavia, St. Charles, Elburnand Fox River & Countryside– said they received few, if any,storm-related calls Aug 30.

Hultgren campaign to payfor misstating financials

Thecongressionalcampaignof U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren,R-Winfield, will have to pay a$2,500 penalty to the FederalElection Commission after anaudit showed a misstatementof receipts and expenditures for2009 and 2010.

According to the FEC’s au-dit, Randy Hultgren for Con-gress’ financial reports showedunderstated receipts by $9,440and spending by $7,911 for 2009.In 2010, Hultgren’s campaignunderstated receipts by $83,278and spending by $58,694 and theending cash-on-hand by $26,113.

Hultgren won the state’scontested 14th CongressionalDistrict. First, he gained hisparty’s nod in the primary elec-tion against Ethan Hastert – sonof Dennis Hastert who held theseat for 20 years – then againstincumbent Democrat Bill Fos-ter and Green Party candidate,

Dan Kairis.Hultgren was elected to a

second term in 2012.In the negotiated settlement

agreement, dated Aug. 19 andmade public by the FEC, theHultgren campaign’s politicalcommittee amended its finan-cial reports to correct the mis-statements.

Hultgren’s political commit-tee also agreed to improve itsinternal controls and to updateits process of tracking receiptsso financial misstatements willnot happen again.

In a statement, Hultgren forCongress thanked the FEC stafffor their assistance and profes-sionalism during the audit andreviewofthecampaign’sreports.

“We cooperated fully withthe FEC during this review andadopted their suggestions abouthow to strengthen the cam-paign’s compliance operations,”according to the statement.

“This matter focused ontechnical reporting issues

which is why it was handledby the FEC’s alternative dis-pute resolution office and notin an enforcement action,” thestatement said. “We are gladthis matter is now closed andlook forward to working withthe FEC in the future to ensurecompliance with its reportingrequirements.”

This is the second time theFEC took corrective actionon the Hultgren campaign. InSeptember 2010, the campaignadmitted it improperly accept-ed campaign donations from astate campaign committee thatwas organized years earlier.

Federal election law forbidscandidates from transferringfunds from state and local cam-paign committees to fund runsfor congressional seats or otherfederal offices.

When the improper contri-butions were brought to thecampaign’s attention, the mon-ey was refunded, according to acampaign spokesman.

BATAVIA – On an ordinaryday at Dimples Donuts, bakersare churning out anywherefrom 500 to 1,000 freshly madedoughnuts to keep up with thedaily demand.

Owner Nali Vong said theshop is known for a range ofhomemade doughnuts and pas-tries, such as its old-fashionedbuttermilk doughnuts, its blue-berry doughnuts and apple frit-ters. The apple fritters are sopopular, in fact, that one compa-ny from Minnesota once askedVong to ship some via expressmail.

“And we did – we sent themapple fritters,” she said.

Dimples Donuts has been inBatavia for 21 years, Vong said.She has owned the doughnutshop for the past three years,and her aunt and uncle ownedthe business before her. Vong’ssiblings and a cousin still helpout, she said. In February, Dim-ples Donuts opened a second lo-cation in Naperville that has adrive-thru window.

The shop carries 17 differenttypes of doughnuts, as well ascoffee drinks, smoothies, home-made muffins, brownies andbreakfast sandwiches.

For the past two years in arow, including 2013, DimplesDonuts won the Kane Coun-ty Chronicle’s Best of the FoxReader’s Choice Award for bestdoughnut.

Everything is made on siteby hand – even the croissantsand the French crullers.

“It’s fresh every day,” Vongsaid.

The longtime establishmentalso has its share of regulars.For example, one area churchregularly orders 70 dozen dough-nuts every Sunday.

Any leftovers usually go tothe Batavia Interfaith Food Pan-try, Vong said.

Head baker Sovonnary Vongcan make about 35 doughnutsper batch, and she said her tim-ing has to be just right when shemethodically flips them over us-ing a pair of long sticks.

Among the doughnut flavors

are maple-flavored long johns,doughnuts with strawberry ic-ing and devil’s food cake. Dim-ples Donuts is open during hol-idays, which is when it offershomemade pies, such as apple,cherry and pecan. Its cakes also

are popular, especially the choc-olate-frosted cake, Vong said.

Sometimes bakers will startmaking doughnuts at 9 a.m. andend at 5 a.m. to fry up the fresh-est doughnuts possible. Theyalso use premium shorteningrather than oil, so the dough-nuts are a little healthier, Vongsaid.

“Everything is hand-made.Everything we make is fromthe heart,” Vong said. “Wewant customers to love it, andwe want our products to be thebest.”

Kane County Chronicle re-porter Eric Schelkopf had thechance to talk to Lang aboutthe new album and his career.

Eric Schelkopf: Your newalbum, “Fight For My Soul,” willcome out Tuesday, Sept. 17. It’syour first album since 2006’s“Turn Around,” which won youa Grammy Award. Why has somuch time passed betweenalbums?

Jonny Lang: Mostly it’s justbecause I started having kids.Right after “Turn Around,” Ihad twins.

And now we have four

children. We just had ourfourth child a few months ago.It was just hard to find time tomake an album. It would havemeant not being home at all.

ES: Is it going to be a weightoff your shoulders when thealbum comes out? Is it greatgetting newmusic out to yourfans?

JL: Yeah, absolutely. It’sreally nice to be touring again

to support a record and havenew songs to play.

ES: And Tommy Sims, whoco-wrote Eric Clapton’s GrammyAward-winning song, “ChangeTheWorld,” produced the album.Why did you want to team upwith him and what do you thinkyou brought to the table?

JL: At first, I wanted totry to do it myself becauseI’ve never done that, but it’s

always been a dream to doa record with Tommy, and Ifinally had the opportunity todo that.

He’s one of my favoriteartists. His solo album, “PeaceAnd Love,” has been a biginspiration to me. We’ve beenbuddies for years and yearsnow, so it was great to workwith him.

He’s like a Stevie Wonder.He’s that level of a musicianand songwriter and producer.

He was just incredible towork with creatively.

ES: Starting out, you wereknown as a blues guitarist. Butdo you think that label fits today?Do you think of this album as ablues record?

JL: No, not really. I’m influ-enced by blues guitar players,for sure, and you can hear that– I think – in my guitar play-ing still. But the songs don’tlend themselves to that genrereally on this record so much.

But I think that will alwaysbe an element of the music.

ES: You’re 32 now. A lot ofpeople probably remember youas that 16-year-old who released“Lie ToMe.” Did you feel a lot ofpressure back then because youwere so young?

JL: Not really. I was doingwhat I loved and I was justhaving the time of my life,really.

Pressure to perform andall that kind of thing wasnever something that I wasconscience about when I wasstarting out. It was fun for me.It was great.

ES: And back in 1999, youplayed in front of then PresidentBill Clinton and his wife. Whatwas that experience like?

JL: Oh, man. It was in-credible. He was just a verygracious guy and super nice.

ES: With this new album, doyou think you are taking blues ina new direction?

JL: I don’t think of it as that,really. I kind of look at thatgenre as something that I amso happy to have been a part of.

With any style of musicor art, I guess you can kindof stretch the boundary of it.But once it starts getting awayfrom what it is too much, itstops being that.

Maybe someday I will do arecord that is just straight-upblues again. This one was notnecessarily trying to stretchthe boundaries of what bluesis or anything like that.

BATAVIA – The AlbrightTheatre has much to celebrateas it gets ready to open its 40thseason this weekend.

The nonprofit theater willunveil its newly created lobbyas it presents its productionof “Harvey,” starting Friday,Sept. 6, at its third-floor spacein the Batavia GovernmentCenter at 100 N. Island Ave. indowntown Batavia.

“We are real excited to showit off for ‘Harvey,’” said Jenni-fer Ring, president of the Al-bright Theatre Board of Direc-tors. “Before the lobby was putin, people could wander backstage. Having it creates a betterexperience.”

Albright Theatre has a richhistory of presenting commu-nity theater. The theater’s firstshow, “Star Spangled Girl,”

opened to eight people in April1974 in a former church inWarrenville.

The theater had been in theBatavia Government Centerfor several years in the late ’80sand early ’90s before movingto the Batavia Park District’sEastside Community Center.The theater returned to theBatavia Government Center in2001.

Albright Theater now at-tracts an average of 50 to 60people to its performances,but crowds have swelled to asmany as 140 people for a singleperformance, Ring said. Thetheater has 80 permanent seats,but that can be expanded to ac-commodate larger crowds, shesaid.

People who come to theAlbright Theatre this seasonalso will notice other changes.Starting this season, Aliano’sRistorante will serve wine and

beer in the theater’s lobby forFriday and Saturday eveningperformances.

“We always want to offerour audience members optionsand make them feel at home,”Ring said. “It is just somethingelse we can offer so people canmake an evening of it. Our pri-ority is first and foremost to

provide a good experience foraudience members.”

Before Saturday’s perfor-mance of “Harvey,” there willbe a gala starting at 7 p.m. atthe Albright Theatre, includ-ing food, drinks, a display ofthe Albright Theatre’s historyand a toast after the show.

Founding member and box

office manager Jeannine Col-lins has been a part of that his-tory.

“We wanted to bring cre-ativity to the stage, so audienc-es would come and enjoy whatwe do,” Collins said. “I can’tbelieve it has been 40 years.I’m so very proud of what TheAlbright has done. It’s grownbeyond our expectations.”

Collins said Albright is dedi-cated to presenting quality the-ater to the community.

“Community theater groupsdo it because they love it,” shesaid. “They are not getting paidfor it. People are invested incommunity theater.”

Photography classes get smartCreator Gallery delves into world ofmobile photography, apps with new classes

NORTH AURORA – Assmartphone cameras contin-ue to improve, they are seem-ingly becoming the most com-monly used image-capturingdevice, further making phototaking, editing and sharingeasier than ever. With a fewtaps and swipes of a finger,life’s moments are captured,beautified and posted to socialmedia channels across the In-ternet in near real time.

Falling in accordance withthe changing times for photog-raphy, the Creator Gallery inNorth Aurora is interminglingphotography instruction withsocial media and mobile-appediting tutorials in two supple-mental classes to be offered inSeptember and October.

The classes are generatedby the idea that, “If I have theskills, I’m no longer limited bytechnology,” Creator Gallerypart-owner Kevin Kuster said.

Kuster will teach each classalongside Creator Gallery pho-tographer and graphic design-er Tom King of North Aurora.

Through each class, begin-ners and intermediate stu-dents will delve into the worldof photography through thelens of point-and-shoot cam-eras, digital SLRs and – now– mobile devices.

“In this day and age, ev-eryone is taking pictures andeveryone wants to take betterpictures,” Kuster said. “Theartist is the important part,not the tool that they’re us-ing.”

Kuster also said 80 percentof his personal photography istaken using a mobile phone,adding that – as a professionalphotographer – using mobileapps such as Instagram makethe often time-consuming taskof photo manipulation “feellike less work.”

Photo-editing apps such asInstagram give amateur andexperienced photographersalike an opportunity to manip-ulate photos in seconds, ulti-mately improving the quality

of images being circulatedthrough cyberspace.

Kuster said Instagram andmobile photography “rein-vigorated” his passion for themedium after buying a smart-phone a year-and-a-half ago.

“What I love about my mo-bile phone [is] I always havemy camera with me,” he said.“It’s right there in my pock-et, and I can edit and uploadphotos right away – and get aresponse and immediate feed-back.”

As an artist, Kuster usesInstagram to share his workand enjoys its ability to starta near instantaneous dialogueonline through images.

As the CEO and chief photodirector of the #JJ communi-ty on Instagram, a feed foundvia @JoshJohnson, Kusterhas helped create a networkof nearly half-a-million mobilephotographers who share asfew as 5,000 and as many as30,000 submissions a day us-ing the hashtag #JJ, Kustersaid.

Through the @JoshJohn-son feed, mobile photogra-phers can enter daily photocontests and post themed en-tries via Instagram, using thefeed’s hashtag. The images arethen shared among the com-munity of photographers hehas helped create.

Kuster will delve into In-stagram more thoroughly inthe second, and supplementalclass to the first, which will bein October.

The first class will be from6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday,Sept. 11. It’s a basic class for

beginner and intermediatephotographers that will fo-cus on better picture-takingtechniques with everydaysubjects, such as family andfriends, as well as portrait andtravel photography.

The second class will befrom 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday,Oct. 5. It will delve into photoediting; how to select the bestimages; how to use mobileapps – like Instagram – to ma-nipulate photos; and how andwhere to post them. The classalso will cover how to connectwith people using hashtagsand how to accumulate addi-tional followers on social me-dia outlets such as Facebook.

Kuster recommends bring-ing the camera students usemost often to take photos,whether it’s a smartphone,point-and-shoot or digital SLR.

“I don’t care what youshoot with; I can teach you tobe a better photographer,” hesaid.

Geneva opened the fallsports season with the objec-tive of separating itself fromthe rest of its Tri-Cities breth-ren in the Upstate Eight Con-ference River Division.

Off the field, however, theVikings are blending closertogether with their nearby ri-vals.

Geneva athletic directorJim Kafer called a revisionto the extracurricular code ofconduct that creates a morestringent punishment periodfor students abusing drugs oralcohol “a natural thing.”

His Tri-Cities colleaguescan attest. St. Charles East, St.Charles North and Batavia of-ficials already are well-versedin similar protocols.

“We hope that acts as a de-

terrent for kids,” East athlet-ic director Mike Sommerfeldsaid. “They know the conse-quences, and we’re constantlytalking with them and remind-ing them, and our coaches do areal good job of that, too.”

Geneva students involvedin extra-curriculars, includingathletics, now face disciplinefrom drug or alcohol use year-round. In the past, studentswere subject to suspensiononly if their offense occurredduring the season.

Geneva also changed itsdiscipline structure from cal-endar days to percentage ofgames or performances, whichseeks to make the punishmentmore equitable from sport tosport.

Some district adminis-trators learned anecdotallythrough students and parentsthat the prior system wasn’t aserious enough deterrent.

Under the new code, a stu-dent’s first offense promptssuspension from 20 percent ofthe next season in which he orshe competes. A second offensecosts a student 50 percent, athird offense one calendar yearof competition and a fourth of-fense results in dismissal fromall extra-curricular eligibility.

Students in violation of thecode also must join a drug andalcohol counseling course.

“We want to teach respon-sibility and accountably foryour actions but we also don’twant to eliminate kids froma positive program becausethey’ve made one or two mis-takes,” Kafer said.

At Batavia, AD Dave An-drews finds Bulldogs coachesto be outstanding deputies ofthe message to make responsi-ble choices.

Andrews may address eachstudent and a parent before thestudent’s first athletic seasonof the school year, but he can’tbe a voice of reason in a hud-dle after a big win or the lastpractice before a school break.That’s where coaches come in.

“It’s the daily connectionsthe kids have with the coaches

that really stresses the code,”Andrews said. “The kids even-tually don’t want to let thecoaches down. They know howdedicated and how hard thosecoaches work. I’ve seen it.”

Repetition also is the normat the St. Charles schools. Athree-sport athlete, for exam-ple, would be required to at-tend code of conduct meetingswith a parent before each sea-son.

Although St. Charles Highsplit into East and North morethan a decade ago, District 303works to keep uniform codes ofconduct in the name of consis-tency. Sommerfeld and Northcounterpart Dan Dolney oftenare one another’s first callsafter disciplinary cases arise,they said.

District 303 also divides vi-olations into Category A andB. Category A misconduct in-volves more severe matters,including drug, alcohol andperformance-enhancing druguse, as well as possession ofdrug-related paraphernalia. Athird offense in Category A re-sults in the loss of extracurric-ular eligibility. In Category B,which centers more on proper-ty and rights of other students,

a third offense results in a sus-pension for one year from thedate of the final offense.

Batavia also operates underthe three-strikes-and-you’re-out rule.

Dolney, who said he calledKafer upon learning of Ge-neva’s changes this week,stressed the importance ofopen-mindedness in the codeevaluation and revision pro-cess.

“You learn from new situa-tions that occur and sometimesthat might prompt a change.You might learn from a switchin another district and thatmight prompt a change,” Dol-ney said. “As with any policy,any rule, any philosophy, youdo want to sit down and look atit every once in a while.”

Kafer – the elder states-men of Tri-Cities ADs; he hasworked at seven schools in Illi-nois and Iowa since 1977 – hasseen a steady pattern of behav-ior in that span.

“At times it appears to bemore of a problem than others,but whether that’s really thecase or just because you mighthave a couple of high-profilesituations, I don’t really knowfor sure,” he said.
