Ribbon-cuttingcelebrates bike andpedestrian underpass

GENEVA – Although the$1.85 million project was fin-ished a month ago, officialsgathered Sept. 6 for a formalribbon-cutting ceremony atthe South Street Trail Bicy-cle/Pedestrian Underpass.

As Randall Road carries50,000 to 60,000 vehicles a day,Kane County TransportationDeputy Director Tom Rickertsaid having the underpassopen to allow safe passage forbicyclists, pedestrians andjoggers reflects the county’sgoal of promoting healthy liv-ing.

“We really seek to addressthe multi-modal aspect oftransportation,” Rickert said.“We need to continue to im-prove the safety of the otheruses – pedestrian and bicy-clists along the road.”

Kane County Engineer andTransportation Director CarlSchoedel rode his bicycle tothe event.

reach coordinator for U.S.Sen. Dick Durbin, said whenpeople talk about federalspending, “this is what itlooks like.”

Federal money made up 80percent of the project’s costwith $360,000 in county trans-portation funds making up thebalance.

County Board ChairmanChris Lauzen praised the un-derpass project.

“We have this wonderfulgift that’s been built and pro-vided by taxpayers of KaneCounty and the wonderful cityof Geneva,” Lauzen said. “Atrail system isn’t as good asit could be if there is no con-nectivity, so this componentof the trail system providesconnectivity.”

Lauzen thanked federaland state taxpayers in addi-tion to local taxpayers, the Illi-nois Department of Transpor-tation for administering thefederal funds, as well as thefederal government and the

“It provides a very good way to get fromthe east side of Randall Road to the westside of Randall Road,” Foster said of thetunnel. “Now we don’t have to cross that

Travelers can come through the tun-nel at the end of South Street, then go upa slope to the Keslinger and Randall roadintersection to cross and continue.

“There is a little push-button by the traf-fic lights there [at Keslinger and Randall]to turn the walk signal on.” Foster said.“Everybody’s supposed to stop.”

GENEVA – Geneva MayorKevin Burns is ready to breakout a new orange tie. It’s anopportunity for Burns to showsupport for the Geneva-basedNorthern Illinois Food Bank

as it prepares for activitiesrelated to Hunger ActionMonth.

According to a news re-lease, food banks across thecountry are urging peopleto “go orange” to help raiseawareness for their cause.

Burns said the city of Ge-

neva will be on board withthe campaign. He encouragedmembers of the City Councilto wear something orange lastweek. While the campaigncontinues throughout Sep-tember, the food bank encour-aged everyone to wear orangeSept. 5 specifically.

Burns said Geneva isproud to partner with the foodbank. He said that residentsare facing “the aching reali-ty that many of our very ownneighbors continue to strug-gle.” The food bank providesfood to more than 60,000 peo-ple each week.

He said attitudes likelyhave changed over the years.Where perhaps it once mighthave been seen as “a shame-ful thing” that people wouldneed help from a food bank,Burns said it is much more ac-ceptable now. Asked whetherhe thought people might besurprised to hear that therewould be Geneva residentsneeding such help, he saidthat’s likely no longer thecase.

“As a result of the most

recent recession and the cur-rent struggles that a lot of usare facing, many people nolonger are ashamed that theyare struggling,” he said. “Andthey are no longer surprisedthat their neighbors are strug-gling.”

Burns said the city will bedisplaying “as much orangeas possible,” but that help isneeded beyond September.

“The saddest part of allthis is that while we focusour attention on the month ofSeptember, the need is year-round,” he said, adding it is a“12-month-a-year need.”

GENEVA – The GenevaCommons shopping centerin Geneva has a new owner.

LaSalle Investment Man-agement, the investmentunit of Chicago-based JonesLang LaSalle Inc., recentlybought the 438,000-square-foot shopping center at 602Commons Drive in Geneva.Geneva Mayor Kevin Burnsc o n f i r m e d t h e p u r c h a s eSept. 4.

The previous owners ofthe shopping center, twolimited partnerships ad-vised by Invesco Ltd., de-faulted on a $76 million loanwhen it matured in May, ac-cording to Crain’s ChicagoBusiness. The mall openedin 2002.

Burns said the change inownership will not hurt themall’s commercial standing.

“The folks at LaSalle ob-viously saw it as a good in-vestment,” Burns said. “Westill believe it is a sound in-vestment as well.”

Burns said he spoke aboutthe pending sale during his“State of Geneva” address atthe Geneva Women In Busi-ness luncheon Aug. 20.

He doesn’t forsee anychanges at Geneva Com-mons because of the changein ownership. Barnes & No-ble, Crate And Barrel andWilliams-Sonoma are amongthe stores in the upscale out-door shopping center.

“The management stillremains the same,” Burnssaid.

Geneva Commons prop-erty manager Cathy Char-hut could not be reached forcomment.

Burns said the RandallRoad commercial corridorremains a strong commer-cial force.

“Geneva Commons is aregional destination,” hesaid.

Illinois Chamber of Com-merce President and CEODoug Whitley, a Bataviaresident, announced Sept. 5he will retire from the orga-nization next June.

Whitley, 63, became pres-ident and CEO in Septem-ber 2001. Over the years, hehas been the guest speakerat many Batavia Chamberof Commerce events.

“He’s certainly broughtnew life and new energy tothe Illinois Chamber and,more broadly, to the Illinoisbusiness community,” Bat-avia Chamber of CommerceExecutive Director RogerBreisch said in reacting tothe news. “It’s a sad day inBatavia.”

Whitley, who has livedin Batavia for 20 years, saidnow was the right time toannounce his retirement.He noted that when he stepsdown, he will have beenin the job for more than 13

years.“That’s a good, long

run,” he said.Whitley said he also

wanted the Illinois Cham-ber to have a new leaderbefore the 2014 gubernatori-al election. During his ten-ure, the Illinois Chamberhas represented businessinterests on matters includ-ing pushing for workers’compensation reform; helpto defeat a proposed grossreceipts tax; founding andco-chairing the Transpor-tation for Illinois Coalitionand seeking legislation tobring long-term solvency toIllinois public pension sys-tems.

“I think we have re-es-tablished the Illinois Cham-ber as a significant voice forbusiness in Illinois,” Whit-ley said.

He said his biggest dis-appointment has been that“the elected officials of thestate have failed to severelyattack the state’s high un-employment numbers.”

BATAVIA – It’s hard for Gre-ta Bell to describe her colorfuland animated R/Evolving Circusperformance art piece.

Simply put, it’s an 8-foot-tallcarousel that’s powered by a bi-cycle. While it spins, it displayscolorful oil paintings of trea-sured items that hold a lot of sig-nificance to someone.

“It doesn’t matter where I go... people say, ‘I’ve never seenanything like this,’ and I say,‘You never will again because it’sreally unusual,’” she said.

Bell, who lives in Batavia, hasbeen working on the piece sinceOctober 2011, when fellow artistJim Jenkins of Geneva helpedher build the carousel. Initial-ly, the carousel was 12 feet tall,making it too large to travel with.Jenkins helped scale it down to8 feet in height, and since thespring, Bell has been able to trav-el with the R/Evolving Circus,otherwise known as Our Evolv-ing Circus.

Her goal, she said, is to bringthe carousel to places where peo-ple might not have as much ac-cess to art, such as schools in cer-tain areas, nursing homes andeven prisons. It takes her abouttwo hours to assemble the piece,and once it’s up, people can readthe stories of sentiment associat-ed with each painting.

The paintings are of objects,such as a cassette tape, a chande-lier, a wood stove and a wheelbar-row. Bell also has been collectingnarratives of the memories tiedto each piece.

“It’s a whimsical thing,” shesaid. “It’s just for fun and to makepeople happy.”

But in order for the R/Evolv-ing Circus to come to life, Bellsaid she needs people to partici-pate by sending her their stories

and memories through her web-site, www.gretabell.com.

That’s how it evolves, shesaid.

So far, Bell has painted 35 ofwhat she calls stories on piecesof canvas, which measure 2-by-4feet. She said her goal is to paintone piece of canvas each monthto keep the circus evolving. Todate, she’s taken her circus toCanada; the most eastern part ofmainland in the United States,which is in Maine; New York;and Vermont.

“It’s very, very fun and re-warding,” she said. “I want todo it for at least 35 more years.I’m not really a traveler, but thisforces me to get out of my com-

fort zone.”She said the piece tends to

draw all sorts of people, includ-ing those who are purely inter-ested in the mechanics of the car-ousel and those who are drawn tothe bright, colorful paintings. Apair of puppets, who are dressedto match Jenkins and Bell, alsohelp draw interest, Bell said.

“I get to draw in a whole sec-tion of people who wouldn’t careabout, quote unquote, art,” shesaid.

Bell’s R/Evolving Circus willbe on display at the Art in YourEye festival in Batavia on Satur-day, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept.22. People can watch her set upthe carousel starting at 10 a.m.each day, and Bell said she plans

to give a short 15-minute presen-tation and read some of the sto-ries associated with her pieces at1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Bell said she couldn’t haveexecuted the piece without thehelp of her family and strongcommunity support. She said shehopes the piece simply brings

joy to peoples’ lives because it’sreminiscent of the joy she felt asa child when something new andexciting would come along.

“I’m hesitant to sell any-thing,” she said of her canvaspaintings. “I’m just creating alittle bit of joy and making peoplefeel special.”

Kane County Chronicle EricSchelkopf had the chance to talk toCatalano about his illustrious career.

Eric Schelkopf: Of course, you will beplaying at the St. Charles Jazz Weekend. Iknow that growing up, you were a mem-ber of the Elgin Community College JazzBand. How long were you a member?

Frank Catalano: I guess it would havebeen 1991-1995, while I was in highschool.

ES: So, being part of St. Charles JazzWeekend, is it good to be on home turf?

FC: I’m really looking forward to it.I’ve had I don’t know how many peoplesend nice emails saying that they’recoming out. In some cases, it’s peoplewho I haven’t seen in, like, 20 years.

Ironically, for the Saturday portionat The House Pub, I also got invitedby a couple of the guys from the bandWilco to do this festival that day withthem called the Beethoven Festival,which is an international festival.

I’m going to pull some double dutythat day.

ES: Why do you think you are in suchhigh demand?

FC: That’s a good question. I reallyhad a horrible car accident two and ahalf years ago.

A ... driver plowed into me and dis-located some ribs. I didn’t know howmuch I would be playing after that.

And I know a lot of times peopletalk about what happened about 20years ago, when I had my right middlefinger cut off. So, I really have hadenough accidents that would put some-body out of commission completely,especially this last one, where I easilycould have died.

I’m still in physical therapy twoand half years later. I didn’t reallyknow how much in demand I wouldbe, to be honest. Maybe it’s because Ihave enough of my own style going onat this point and that I kind of contrib-ute a lot of energy.

Also, I like improvising in a waythat is a little more risk-based, and I

write songs in that manner. I definite-ly try my best to bring my own style tothe table, so to speak.

ES: What did the experience of playingwith the Elgin Community College JazzBand teach you that carries with you tothis day?

FC: Last week, I was playing withlegendary trumpet player RandyBrecker in New York, but I met himmore than 20 years ago playing in theECC Jazz Band because he was theguest artist. And then he started hir-ing me for gigs soon after that.

So, that one connection from beingin the ECC Jazz Band has lasted al-most 20 years now. Also, I got to meetdrummer Louie Bellson. He hired mefor a bunch of stuff and he wrote theliner notes for my first CD, and I’m ona video with him. He was also a guestartist with the ECC Jazz Band.

So, in addition to getting to meetpeople like that, which is almost un-heard of nowadays, it really made mehone my skills.

I didn’t want to sound crappygetting to play with these people, and Iwanted to impress them.

I really feel getting to play withthese people as a young teenager atECC helped me out very much to thisday.

The studio tour will feature the work of 30local artists in nine Geneva-area homes andcommercial businesses. Artists showcasingtheir work will include fiber artists, jewelers,metalworkers, media artists, mixed-mediaartists, painters, photographers, sculptorsand wood workers. Some artists will givedemonstrations during the studio tour, andall artwork will be available for purchase.

The artist’s musical legacy– from irresistible romanticnumbers to quirky comicalditties – still resonates withmodern audiences as well asthose of a certain age.

For proof, look no furtherthan Fox Valley Repertory’ssuperb production of “Let’sMisbehave!” This fast-pacedmusical revue, smartly direct-ed by Kevin Bellie, showcasessome 30 of Porter’s legendaryclassics.

The production, conceivedby Patrick Young and KarinBowerstock, draws from Por-ter’s well-known works like“Anything Goes” and “KissMe Kate” to late-career hits“Silk Stockings” and “Can-Can.”

Songs are deftly woventhrough a storyline involvingthree friends in New Yorkduring the 1930s who areunwinding in the wee hoursof the morning after a partywhen they find themselvestaking stock in their single-

hood. They long for a soulmate and make a pact to findtrue love before the year ends.

But the quest gets compli-cated when the two women,Alice and Dorothy, fall for thesame guy, Walter.

Bellie, who also getscreative choreographing the

occasional dance steps thatdovetail with many of thevocal numbers, has a first-ratecast that measures up to thedemands of this challengingrevue.

Khaki Pixley, Blake Red-dick and Heather Townsendare veteran actors, each gifted

with a strong, expressivevoice. Individually and incombination, they smoothlysing and dance their waythrough the two-hour show.They are supported by onstagepianist Ryan Brewster, atireless, unflappable musicianwho’s in perfect sync with the

performers.Townsend shines in the

dreamy “In the Still of theNight” and opening-nightaudience members werehumming the tune on the wayout. Meanwhile, Pixley showsoff her impressive vocal rangein the amusing “Always Trueto You in My Fashion” and thetender “Let’s Not Talk AboutLove.” Reddick pleases in“You Do Something To Me.”

Today, Bat-avia has 18 his-toric windmillsthroughout thecity, with three additionalwindmills awaiting install-ment, according to a news re-lease from the Batavia Public

Library.To celebrate Batavia’s

collection of windmills andeducate the public about“Batavia’s Place in WindmillHistory,” the library will hosta daylong symposium Satur-day, Sept. 14. The library sym-posium will be from 9 to 5 p.m.at the library, 10 S. BataviaAve., Batavia.

The program will beginwith a ceremony, in whichrepresentatives of the Ameri-can Society of Mechanical En-gineers of New York City willpresent a plaque to BataviaMayor Jeff Schielke in honorof Batavia’s collection of wind-mills as a Historic MechanicalEngineering Landmark, ac-cording to the release.

Following the ceremony, a

slew of speakers will offer lec-tures, including Dr. T. Lind-say Baker of Rio Vista, Texas,who is an expert on Americanwindmills, having publishedseveral books on the topic. Healso is the editor of the Wind-millers’ Gazette.

Baker has been comingto Batavia since the 1970s,conducting research onwind-power history.

“I’m delighted to have an-other opportunity to visitBatavia and to learn more,myself, about wind-power his-tory,” he said. “I never cometo Batavia without learningthings I didn’t know.”

During his presentation of“The American Windmill,”beginning at 10:30 a.m., Bak-er will discuss the history of

wind power in America, whilecomparing U.S. windmills toEuropean windmills from yes-ter-year to modern-day times.

“I think [people] will havea much better understandingof the place of Batavia in thebroader scheme of wind pow-er history across the globe,”Baker said. “ ... I think thatit’s important for us to under-stand how our fore-parentsused the renewable power ofthe wind as a demonstrationof how people today and of thefuture also will be able to usethat clean source of renewablepower.”

Baker’s lecture will be thefirst of the 2013-14 season ofthe library’s Lyceum LectureSeries.

GENEVA – Bar Louiein Geneva is looking to setworld records during its sixthannual “Rock the Tot” tater-tot eating contest Thursday,Sept. 19. Locations acrossthe country will host the an-nual contest, which will bebroken into two parts: teamrelay races and a solo compe-tition. The relay race will beat 8 p.m., followed by the solo

competition, when a “Rockthe Tot” champion will becrowned.

Bar Louie is attempting toset a world record for mosttater tots eaten simultane-ously among all of the restau-rant’s locations.

The relay race teams willconsist of four people. At thesound of a buzzer, the firstteam member will eat a poundof tots as fast as he or she can,followed by the second personand so on until every mem-

ber on the team has eaten apound of tater tots. The teamto finish its four pounds oftots in the quickest time winsfour “Rock the Tot” champi-on T-shirts and free tots for ayear at Bar Louie.

Solo competitors will gohead-to-head in a challengeto eat as many tater tots aspossible in three minutes. Atthe end of the three minutesa winner will be determinedand declared the “Rock theTot” champion. All winners

will be declared locally. Lo-cal solo winners will receivea $250 Bar Louie gift card, atrophy, T-shirt and free tatertots for a year.

means cooked by wood inItalian, and the wine-bar in-fused restaurant is doing justthat to make one of Napoli,Italy’s, famed foodie exports– pizza.

Wood-fired pizza jointsthat use a brick oven andare fit with a wine bar havebecome quite a trend in re-cent years. But despite theirsimplicity, it’s not alwayseasy to navigate who doesit well. Neo’s in St. Charlesand Cotto A Legna in Genevahappen to beat out much ofthe competition.

Rusticity abounds whenit comes to Cotta A Legna’sfood and atmosphere. Darkwood floors with beigewalls to complement theearthiness added by slateaccent pillars, combine wellwith the gritty – yet vibrant– abstract images that adornthe walls. The restaurant’ssleek, lighter-wood tablesare beset with minimalis-tic chocolate chairs, and acushioned bench flanks anouter wall. Bar seating alsoswings around the brickoven, so diners can enjoy thepizza-making process duringtheir experience.

Cotto’s cutesy patio fitwith orange umbrellas and apergola, provides a peacefulsetting for al-fresco diningdespite the train trafficacross the street. (The restau-rant is located across the

street from the Geneva Metrastation.)

Settling in at a two-topnear the window, our friend-ly waitress provided excel-lent service throughout theentirety of our experience.Around noon it was mildlybusy on a Monday, but grewbusier around 1 p.m.

We started with theShrimp Cornetti ($12), whichconsisted of five robustgrilled shrimp brushed with

garlic and – strangely – anorange sauce then wrappedin Pancetta. The tangy andsweet flavors of the orangeglaze teaming with thesaltiness of the garlic andpancetta tasted good, but Iwould have liked the shrimpto be more of the star of thedish rather than the orangeglaze that overpowered theother ingredients.

For my entree, I optedto keep it classic with the

Napolitan favorite PizzaMargherita ($10), a 12-inchpie with tomato sauce, freshMozzarella, olive oil and ba-sil. Urban legend has it thatthe Pizza Margherita was cre-ated in the late 1800s in honorof Queen consort Margheritaof Savoy by Napolitan piz-zamaker Raffaele Esposito,who used its ingredients torepresent the Italian flag.

Despite the story’s fraillegitimacy, when the piearrived, its rich hues of red,white and green actuallydid remind me of the Italianflag. My pizza was a thing ofbeauty. The gently charrededges gave an aromaticrichness to the flavors of theMozzarella’s saltiness, tangof the tomato and freshnessof the basil.

My dining companionordered one of the pastas on arecommendation – the Polloe Cavatappi with spinach,grilled chicken and Cavat-appi noodles smothered in

a rich, creamy garlic sauce($14). The hearty portionsize and richness of the dishended in leftovers, which weenjoyed later that eveningwith a glass of wine thatpaired very nicely.

The restaurant’s wine barhas a boastful selection of va-rietals from Italy and beyond,sold mostly by the bottle,with a slightly more limitedselection served by the glass.It also stocks Italian brews,such as Moretti & Moretti LaRossa and Menabrea Bionda.

I’ve been to Cotto a coupleother times when I orderedwine with my meal, and itreally does add to the flavorprofiles. Order wine – no mat-ter what time it is. Betweennoon and 1 p.m. on a Mon-day afternoon, nearly everydiner was sipping wine whileenjoying his or her meal. Ifeveryone’s doing it (just inthis case) you should do it,too. Or as they say in Italy,“When in Rome ... .”

BATAVIA – Sharon Sychta ofBatavia knew she wanted to make abold statement with her fabric andmetal dress, which featured a 6-footdiameter bottom hoop.

“I wanted it to fill the runway,”she said.

The dress was just one of thecutting edge fashions on display atWater Street Studios on Sept. 7 aspart of the organization’s secondannual On-som’ bel fundraiser.This year’s theme was “The Chairand What You Wear.”

Fittingly, the dress that Sychtadesigned featured a metal cage anda chair inside.

“I wanted to create beauty andcomfort and intrigue and mys-tery,” Sychta said.

Sychta was one of the originalboard members of the nonprof-it Water Street Studios, which ismarking its fifth anniversary thisyear.

“It’s good to be part of all ofthis,” Sychta said.

Modeling the dress was herdaughter, Claire Sychta, 17, a se-nior at Batavia High School.

“It was fun to wear,” she said.“I’m really proud of my mom.”

Claire Sychta herself designed adress made out of coffee filters thattook second place at Batavia HighSchool’s Rock the Runway event inMay. The dress will be part of theStudent Legacy Project at the ArtIn Your Eye fine art show and fes-tival in Batavia on Saturday, Sept.21, and Sunday, Sept. 22.

“I am good friends with one ofthe organizers,” she said. “Theywere short a model. They neededsomeone who could walk down therunway and look confident.”

“I want to support them,” Po-maro said. “Water Street Studios isdoing something special. They do alot of outreach.”

One of the outfits that SandraLeonard of Chicago designed fea-tured a hand-painted purple andwhite “flower” top with a texturedskirt and head wrap scarf.

“I call it sculptural clothing,”she said. “I like to paint my ownfabrics.”

An auction at the event raisedabout $8,000 for Water Street Stu-dios.

North may have main-tained its hot start with a25-23, 25-21 sweep, but not be-fore exhaling first. And thenquickly moving on.

“We’re always training tobe ready for that next match,”North Stars middle blockerEmily Carroll said. “Eventhough we’re 10-0, we never

settle. It’s not good enough forus. We always try to be better,and better ourselves for thenext match.”

Batavia (5-5, 0-1 UEC River)served aggressively and keptNorth out of system for muchof the night, a rarity for theNorth Stars (10-0, 1-0) to date.

“That was our goal,” Bull-dogs coach Lori Trippi-Paynesaid, “but sometimes out ofsystem is not a good thing, be-cause Taylor Krage can hit inthe back row.”

Krage, the North Stars’Northern Illinois-bound se-nior outside hitter, smacked amatch-high nine kills, includ-ing one to seal Game 1. SophiaDuVall (five kills) and DaleyKrage (four) were next.

Ultimately, North perse-vered with a focus that haswowed coach Lindsey Haw-kins since summer workouts,when players pledged theiraccountability to each otherand to making the most of anexperienced, talented core.

“We have a lot of girls thatstay calm,” Taylor Krage said.“We don’t really freak out onthe court, and we kind of justkeep playing volleyball nomatter what.”

Of course, part of playing

volleyball entails what somebystanders would consider“freaking out.” At least afterbig points.

A pregame announcementwarned a boisterous “PackThe Place” crowd against theuse of artificial noisemakers.Naturally, it didn’t apply tothe North Stars or Bulldogs.

Eventually, North usedthat encouragement to its ad-vantage at the net, as ClaireAnderson, Jaclyn Taylor, Car-roll and DuVall stood up to aBatavia attack led by Meyer(eight kills) and Shea Stanley(six).

“Honestly, just being loudand cheering each other onjust motivates everyone to getthat block,” Carroll said.

Don’t forget about breakfast!Some say it’s the most importantmeal of the day, because it givesyou energy, keeps you full, and getsyour brain and body ready to payattention and learn in school.But not all breakfast foods are

created equally. If you normallyeat foods that are high in sugar forbreakfast (like many frosted cere-als, doughnuts and other treats),you might ind yourself low inenergy, and feeling very hungry bythe time lunch rolls around.Instead, you should look for

foods that have whole grains,dairy, fruit and good protein tostart your day off with enough nu-

trients to keep you going.Here are some good alterna-

tives to sugary cereal and breakfastbars:

n Eat your wheat!Not all cerealis bad for you. Look for cereal thathas lots of iber and whole grains— good stuff that will keep you fullfor most of the day. With the addedcalcium frommilk, you are settingyourself up for a good day. If youneed something sweet, add freshblueberries or strawberries to yourbowl.

n Go for yogurt. It’s quick andeasy, illed with things that aregood for you and tastes great.Check the label of your favoriteyogurt to make sure it doesn’t havetoo much sugar. If you don’t like itplain, add some cereal or granola,slice up a banana, or sprinkle insome strawberries and blueberries.

n Make an egg. Eggs are a goodsource of protein, which gives youenergy and helps you grow into

a strong and healthy kid. Proteinalso helps you feel full longer. Ifyou can always hear your stomachgrowling when it’s time to head tolunch, maybe it’s time to add someprotein to your breakfast.

n Have a banana. This one’spretty easy. We’ve all had to rushout the door to get the bus as it isabout to pull away from the curb— but that’s no excuse to not getbreakfast in the morning. Bananasare one of the fastest and easiestbreakfasts around. To make themextra good (and add some extraprotein), dip your banana bites inpeanut butter. Don’t like bananas?Apples and peanut butter make agreat breakfast, too.These rules don’t stop at break-

fast! All kids should remember toeat healthfully at lunch, too. Skipthe chips, ditch the candy, toss thesoda — and watch out for addedsugars.
