Carpenter uses environmentally friendly approachBy NATALIE WICKMAN

[email protected]

GENEVA – Jeff Walsmahas a hobby in carpentry butinstead of buying his woodpieces at a hardware store, hescavenges.

Because of what he de-scribes as an environmentallyfriendly approach to his work,Walsma, a 20-year resident ofGeneva, said he likes to usescrap wood that otherwisewould be thrown away. Hesaid he is on the lookout forthis wood all the time, wheth-er it’s “dumpster diving” orstopping to pick up a piece onthe side of the road, althoughhe said he doesn’t take any-thing without asking permis-sion first.

“There’s not a piece of woodI can’t do stuff with,” Walsmasaid. “Most of my thing is ori-ented towards showing peoplewhat they can [make] out oftrash.”

As time passes, Walsma,57, is growing his hobby into

a job, with customers and craftshow appearances. Recently,Walsma delivered one of hislatest products for Genevaresident Mary Pat Wright. Itis a 7-foot outhouse, completewith a recycled toilet seat onthe inside.

“[The outhouse] just makesyou smile,” Wright said. “It re-minds me of being in nature, and you can smell cedar on theinside.”

Wright is now a repeatcustomer of Walsma. She de-scribes his work as “marvel-

ous” and likes to spread theword of his work.

Walsma markets himselfas “The Dutch Carpenter,” onhis Facebook page. He said hemight make a YouTube pagein the future because he wouldlike more online traffic.

“It’s hard getting noticedto the point where people un-derstand that I’m trying to cutback on things ending up inlandfills,” Walsma said. “Thatyou can make a simple bird-house out of one piece of scrapwood.”

Rich Brown, Sugar Groveresident, received a customcouch table from Walsma.

“[Walsma is] a go-to guy,”Brown said. “I use him forthings that I definitely can’t ordon’t want to do. He has a fullrecommendation from me.”

A retired firefighter, Wals-ma said the job duties some-times called for him to cutdown trees and destroy wild-life habitats. He also wouldhave to clean out camp-grounds, where he found a lot

of wasted scrap wood layingaround.

“The environment can’ttake what we’re giving to it,”Walsma said. “I try to use ev-ery scrap of wood I have.”

When he comes across apiece of warped wood, Wals-ma said he cuts it up into bits, since the piece is too damagedto be used as a whole. He alsosometimes uses plastic prod-ucts that have been discarded.

In addition to carpentry,Walsma teaches woodworkingand participates in an openwoodworking forum on Face-book.

Walsma likes to projecthis “goofy” personality intohis work. For each piece, hewrites a whimsical short sto-ry about “lonely” scrap woodtaking journeys to become thefinished product.

“Do what you like to do be-cause it isn’t about the mon-ey,” Walsma said. “I alwaystell people to keep an openmind, think of crazy stuff andenjoy what you’re doing.”

Festival of the Vine holds ‘tasteful’ eventSoon, the lazy days of sum-

mer will be a memory.I know the autumnal

solstice officially is Monday,Sept. 22, so technically sum-mer lasts a bit longer. Butwhen school begins againand the alarm comes outof hibernation and sched-ules are again resurrected, summer simply seems to fadeaway.

The hustle and bustle ofbeing here or there may evenconflict with the luxury youhad over the past months ofmaking a family dinner andhaving an actual family atthat dinner.

Unfortunately for my fam-ily, one of my better qualitiesis not cooking. Sure, I canmake the basics, but anybodythat knows me would certain-ly not consider me a gourmetchef. I subscribe to the phi-losophy that those who can, cook, and those who can’t, goout to eat.

When school starts, wetend to eat outside of the home

a lot. Sometimes it is just eas-ier to grab something on therun, as we are running fromone commitment to another.

However, when Friday,Sept. 5, arrives, what better

way to eat out than beingable to sample 23 Genevarestaurants in one location. That place is Festival of theVine.

For 33 years, Geneva

Chamber of Commerce hasbeen inviting all who enjoyfantastic food, exquisitewines, energizing entertain-ment and a great time to thistasteful event, held this year

from Friday, Sept. 5, to Sun-day, Sept. 7.

Feed yourself, make it adate night or bring the wholefamily to this festival. TheFlavor Fare offers somethingfor every taste and crav-ing. Each sampling is betterthan the last, and you will beconvinced that just one moretiny bite – from each booth – isnecessary before leaving.

Since Festival of the Vinestemmed (pun intended) fromanything grown on a vine, wine is a fruitful part of thefestival – 18 wines are beingoffered at the wine tent forpurchase by the glass.

There also is free liveentertainment each evening, conveniently located stepsaway from the Flavor Fare.

Add a fall twist on your dec-orating or spice up an autumndish with tips and tricks gath-ered at the daily demonstra-tions, located on the HarvestStage on James Street.

Report coyotesightingson website

By BRENDA [email protected]

Coyote hunter Rob Erick-son has set up a coyote sight-ings page online for area res-idents to report seeing sick, injured or problem coyotes.

Erickson recently spoketo Geneva city officials aboutreports of problem coyotes insome subdivisions. Ericksonadvocated removing and euth-anizing aggressive coyotes thatwere unafraid of people. Citystaff members are researchingthe situation, officials said.

The reporting site is onlineat www.scientificwildlifeman-agement.com/report-a-sighting.

“This could be very helpfulfor residents and city officialsto accumulate informationthat is needed to make an ed-ucated decision on whether re-moval is warranted,” Ericksonwrote in an email. “I think youwill see it is user friendly.”

“This coyote sightings pageis designed to provide your lo-cal government officials withaccurate information aboutcoyotes living in your commu-nity so that educated decisionscan be made as to the resolu-tion of problems with sick oraggressive coyotes,” the web-site states. “The accurate in-formation that you provideby filling out this form will beinvaluable to developing a pos-itive solution to the issue.”

The website includes mul-tiple photos of coyotes, includ-ing photos of coyotes afflictedwith sarcoptic mange.

According to the Cook Coun-ty, Illinois, Coyote Project, thedebilitating disease is trans-mitted by a mite that burrowsinto the skin of the animal. Theresulting infection causes thecoyote to lose most of its hair, and then it dies from exposure.

Ellyn.Displaying manifold artistic

talents at an early age, Georgeattended Knox College as anundergraduate, where he received aBachelor of Fine Arts degree. Hewas then accepted at the Universityof Chicago School of Fine Arts, where he was awarded a Masters ofFine Arts degree. George alsostudied at the Art Institute of

Chicago, which purchased two ofhis paintings. In the early 1960s, George served

in the U.S. Army and was based fortwo years in Germany.Upon his return to the states,

George's art career blossomed. Heheld a studio in the Pilsen area ofChicago before moving to the FoxValley, west of Chicago. Throughthe years, George worked in manymedia and styles - some uniquely ofhis own invention - from oilpaintings, to abstract landscapes inwater colors, to whimsical collages. He created his own style of “bagart”, and copywrited series, “ManoMan” .George was also a dedicated

“gentleman farmer”, havinginherited farms in Central Illinois, that were passed down throughthree generations of the Pope sideof his family. He took great pride inthe farms' productivity and visitedthem often. In 1988, George married Judy L.

STILL IN DEMAND

By ERIC [email protected]

Wilson Travel & Cruise President Jan-et Foster knows how easy it is for peopleto book airline tickets online these daysthrough the proliferation of such web-sites as expedia.com and orbitz.com.

So her agency has had to change itsapproach in order to survive.

“The business has changed,” Fos-ter said. “You have to move with yourindustry as the buying patterns change.Booking airline tickets is no longer amajor part of our business.”

Not all travel agencies have beenable to make the adjustment. Accordingto recent statistics from the Bureauof Labor Statistics, there were 73,000travel agents in 2012, down from 95,360 adecade earlier.

Foster has seen plenty of changes inthe travel industry since she purchasedWilson Travel & Cruise in St. Charles in1986. The travel agency was started bythe Wilsons in 1962, Foster said.

One of the first changes happenedas the result of the rise of the Internetin the mid-1990s, when airlines stoppedpaying commissions to travel agents andstarted selling tickets themselves, Fostersaid.

“The Internet has opened up ticketbuying,” she said.

These days, the majority of WilsonTravel’s business is putting togethervacation packages.

“Cruises comprise 25 percent of ourbusiness, with the rest of it being land-based vacations,” Foster said.

Oui Travel also has had to adjust tothe changes in the travel industry sinceopening on Randall Road in Batavia in1990.

“It’s very true that we don’t issueas many airline tickets as we used to,”said Oui Travel manager Cindy Brown.“However, I think that in recent years, especially this past year, I think that

people are actually returning back toagencies for that kind of stuff.”

Her father, David Owen, started thebusiness and continues to work there.

Brown thinks that more people arereturning to travel agents because theydon’t have the time or knowledge to plana trip themselves.

“They don’t want to deal with it,” shesaid. “It’s confusing, because there’s somuch out there. There’s so much infor-mation out there, and they don’t want tosift through it.”

Her customers also like the conve-nience of going to a travel agent who cancheck and double-check every detail ofthe trip, Brown said.

“People just want one-stop shopping,”she said. “ I had booked a cruise forsomeone recently, and they just wantedto make sure the flights were going tocoordinate with the cruise times, andthat they wouldn’t get there and miss the

boat, things like that. I think there is acomfort in using somebody, a profession-al who knows what they’re doing anddoes it everyday.”

Booking plane tickets only comprisesabout 5 percent of the agency’s business, she said. Most of Oui Travel’s businessthese days is booking cruises, toursand vacation packages, both inside andoutside of the United States.

“I just helped a gentleman put togeth-er a little trip,” Brown said. “He’s goingto Oklahoma to see Lionel Richie. Buthe needed air and car travel and a hotel, and he wanted it all coordinated and Ijust did it. So it’s that kind of stuff.”

Foster noted that the employees atWilson Travel have more than 20 yearsof professional experience, so they arewell-versed in putting together a vaca-tion package. Before putting togethera package, Foster and her employeesfirst try to determine the needs of thecustomer.

“We listen to their needs, and find outwhat they are after,” Foster said. “Wedo the research and pricing, and come tothem with a proposal.”

Value, rather than the best price, iswhat is important to her clients.

“Our clients aren’t necessarilylooking for the best price,” Foster said.“They are looking for the best value. They want a good product at a fairprice.”

And although the Internet haspresented its share of challenges to thetravel industry, it also has proven to ablessing to travel agents.

“It used to be, you would have to goget a brochure,” Brown said. “You wouldhave to go get destination information. You have all that information at yourfingertips now. Most of the major toursuppliers will have online bookingengines that are for travel agents only.If I wanted to book a Royal Caribbeancruise, there is a whole booking enginefor just travel agents. You have to havetravel agent credentials to get into that.”

Foster is confident that Wilson Travelwill be serving customers well into thefuture.

“There is room for this kind of travelagency, and I believe there always willbe,” she said.

GENEVA – When I first no-ticed Nobel House’s striking,bright-blue awning distinc-tively standing out along busyState Street in downtownGeneva, I was immediatelyintrigued.

Because it’s named afterSwedish-born Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize,I imagined the restaurant’sinterior would be filled withtattered books lining shelves, rustic mahogany furniture,Oriental rugs and wallsadorned with framed photosof Nobel Prize laureates likeAlbert Einstein, Nelson Man-dela or Martin Luther King,Jr. But my envisioned “Nobeltheme” ends as soon as youwalk through the door.

Instead, you’ll find a youth-ful, contemporary, tavern-likeeatery that has made its culi-nary prowess the star of theshow. Still exuding plenty ofrustic charm with hearty, ex-posed wooden beams runningalong the ceiling and urban-esque lighting features, NobelHouse is a strong contenderamong Geneva’s drinking anddining scene.

Having visited two timesprior to sample Nobel House’smighty craft-beer list – fea-turing 30 brews on tap andanywhere from 60 to 90 brewsby the bottle – I was lookingforward to trying the recipescoming out of its kitchen.

But first – beer. NobelHouse is a great place to ex-plore the world of craft brew. The staff is friendly, quiteknowledgeable and will giveyou free samples of whateverthey have on tap if you’rehaving a difficult time makinga decision. If you don’t knowwhat you like, they can helpyou with that, too. No beersnobs here; they are happy tohelp and teach.

Now, the food. The restau-rant is equipped with its ownsmoker, so – to be expected– meat is a formidable option, and they have at least twobarbecue sauces – one that ismore vinegar-based and theother is on the sweeter end

of the spectrum. Both were

delicious.

My dining companions and

I visited Nobel House around

lunch time on a Monday, and

it was buzzing, not packed –

which is ideal – but definitely

full of activity.

Worth taking a gander at,

in addition to the menu, is the

restaurant’s “Market Chalk-

board” located at the end of

the bar, which displays a list

of oysters, cheese and char-

cuterie, flatbreads and soups

of the day.

My dining companions and

I ordered a round of waters,

which were served out of a

glass bottle and without ice,

and started with the Mexican

Ceviche ($10), citrus-marinat-

ed shrimp with cocktail sauce,

fresh pico and panko-fried

avocado chunks served with

lime creme fraiche and tor-

tilla chips. The bits of fried

avocado were a nice touch,

adding a bit of crunch and

taming the acidity.

The showstopper of the

meal was the Crab Cake Club

($14), which was recommend-

ed by our waitress. The dish

comes stacked with two meaty

crab cakes and layered with

slices of bacon, avocado, let-

tuce, tomato and house aioli,

creating the perfect blend of

flavors and textures.

Entrées are served with

house fries, belly beans, cole-

slaw, mac and cheese, chips or

a side salad. My dining com-panion opted for the mac andcheese side, which consistedof sharp-cheddar-doused cav-atappi noodles.

I ordered the Nobel HouseBurger, which came with ahalf-pound of 100-percent,black-Angus ground beefand a choice of cheese on abrioche bun. I added caramel-ized onions and mushroomswhich came at an up-charge of$1 each. I ordered my burgermedium and it came well-do-ne, but other than that it wasa good choice.

My other dining com-panion ordered the NobelHouse Smoked Sandwich, which allows diners to choosebetween brisket, pulled pork, turkey pastrami and Ream’sandouille sausage. The briskettasted tender and the barbe-cue sauces took its flavoringto another level.

There’s just somethingabout combining burgers andbarbecue with great beer, andin Geneva’s blooming craft-beer scene, Nobel House hasmanaged to bring both to thetable, and with gumption. Ifthe Nobel Prize is given forachievement, I think NobelHouse is a place that is worthyof its name.

Runners rise to the challengeBy JARED [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – Changesthat made the races more chal-lenging in the eighth annualBob Leonard River Run andWalk on Aug. 9 did not deterrunners from competing in theevents.

The 5K course was changedto make it more difficult anda 10K race was added. Raceofficials had to close walk-upregistration for the two run-ning events because they ranout of racing bibs and timingchips.

“Today we had so manywalk-ins that we ran out ofbibs,” said Julie Farris, presi-dent of CMF Events, the com-pany that managed the races.“Based on the bibs and basedon the amount of the attend-ees, this was the largest event

to date that the Bob Leon-ard River Run and Walk hasdone.”

Ninety-three chipped run-ners competed in the 10K and157 ran in the 5K.

Runners agreed that the10K course, which started inPottawatomie Park, crossedthe Fox River and winded itsway to Randall Road beforereturning to the park, was tax-ing.

“I would say the switchesthey put in there about milefour [was the hardest part ofthe course]” 10K male winnerMatt Sagan said. “It was upand down and a big hill rightin the middle. It was a pain.”

Sagan, a senior on the Riv-erside-Brookfield High Schoolcross country team, finishedwith a time of 37:53.05. Hisyounger brother, Jack, tookthird, crossing the finish line

in 39:55.85.“This [race] is more for me

and my brother. This is likeour preseason training,” saidthe older Sagan. “Our seasonstarts on Wednesday.”

Farris said most of the 5Kcourse remained the same asin the past.

“We changed it a little bit insections with stairs and mak-ing it a little more difficult,”Farris said. “The 10K was anexpansion of the 5K run – a lit-tle more rugged, a little morechallenging.”

“I was expecting to run onroad and pavement so thatwas demanding,” said DavidPhelps, a St. Charles residentwho took fifth place in the 10Kmale division and first in the40-49 male category. “Runningin the grass and the switch-back in the hills, I wasn’t ex-pecting that this year.”

E l b u r n r e s i d e n t a n dNorthern Illinois Universitydance student Jessica Lewissaid she was surprised at allthe hills.

“It was very challengingbecause I expected a very flattrack,” said Lewis, who camein third in the 20-29 femalegroup in the 10K.

Rounding out the top threemale 10K winners was MattBaker (38:15.32) from Polo.

Oswego resident StephanieJohnson finished first in thefemale 10K division. She com-pleted the circuit in 40:06.78.Sue Russell of DeKalb tooksecond (45:14.22) and Bartlett’sGrace Churney finished third(46:48.99).

Stephanie Howe, 13, of Ge-neva took top honors in thefemale division of the 5K racewith a time of 20:01.13.
