What is “Glycemic Index” ?
Glycemic Index (GI) is a measurement carried out on carbohydrate-containing foods
and their impact on our blood sugar.
GI is a ranking of carbohydrate foods from 0 to 100 based on how quickly they raise
our blood sugar levels.
Why Is GI Important?
Our body performs best when blood sugar is kept relatively constant. Over the past 15
years, low-GI diets have been associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular
disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, stroke, depression, chronic kidney
disease, formation of gall stones, neural tube defects, formation of uterine fibroids,
and cancers of the breast, colon, prostate, and pancreas.
Glycemic Index Classification
Low GI --- 55 or less , Medium GI --- 56–69 , High GI --- 70 and above
Low GI Diet Is The Best Way To Make Healthier Food Choices!
BENEFITS OF A LOW GI DIET
Prevent heart disease Lower your risk of diabetes Increases thefeeling of fullness
Helps control food intake Help you lose weight
Reduces blood cholesterol level
What is Glycemic Load?
Glycemic load is based on the Glycemic index (GI), and
is defined as the grams of available carbohydrate in the
food times the food's GI. GL is a GI-weighted measure
of carbohydrate content. The ranking for Glycemic load
is as follows:
Low = 10 or less , Medium = 11-19, High = 20 or more
Example Of Glycemic Load (GL)
Glycemic Load = GI x Carbohydrate (g) content per portion ÷
100. Using an apple as an example:
GI value = 40; Carbohydrate per serve = 20g , GL= 40 x
20/100,
The GL of a typical apple is 8
