Continued FRoM Page-10 and get some more insights into the benefits of play reading. Personally I feel that there is a lot of potential for this method in language teaching, especially English language, and will also inculcate the habit of reading among the students because of the curiosity value resulting from such or similar activities.

We teachers have to devise newer and innovative methods to teach our students. Newer pedagogical methods will bring excitement in the subject and will also provide relief to the students from the boredom arising fromstereotype teaching. There are also a lot of avenues to do research on the benefits of such methods.

Finally, I think it is absolutely essential to create and sustain interest in the subject, for which we need to continuously innovate and evolve newer methods. Last but the least, I would like to congratulate the participating teachers and Sadguna College and their staff for this unique experiment. This unique and novel event was initiated by Dr.SubhasJhala and Prof.Nitesh Solanki, Principal and faculty member respectively of Sadguna College.

On 25th August, 2014, 55 students from Std 5th,6 th & 7th were

taken to Traffic Park. First of all, we were led to the room where there were comfortable benches and chairs (Specially meant for children) and shown a movie on Traffic rules and also how accidents take place. There was a message: If Traffic rules are observed strictly, accidents can be avoided. Then one guide came with us and explained the children about the Traffic signals. He showed us the Pedestrian over bridge, tunnel, railway track, zebra crossing, bus-stand…

The best part of it was

students were given bicycle ride. They enjoyed it a lot and at the same time learnt the rules practically.

The Traffic signals – Red, Yellow, Green signals

Stop, Get set and Go. If these rules are followed, accidents could be avoided. We all understood that ‘Drive carefully to Live Joyfully.’

PORTRAYING PATRIOTS! PROMISING PATRIOTISM!

At the age of 8,9,10 years students imbibe values the express/portray and

act upon. To create patriotic values its fun to felicitate out patriots by impersonating them and orating their poignant thoughts. Students portrayed

famous social patriots like Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sukhdev, Gandhiji, Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Madam Cama, Lala Lajpatrai, Guru Gobind Singh, Suniti Choudhary, Subhash Chandra Bose.

Through best out of waste projects, the school has tried to set an example in

front of the society to reuse the waste material. The empty bottles of mineral water are thrown away as waste, but the children learnt the creativity of using glass colours on disposable bottles.

The children of Std V to VIII exhibited their art by

making ceramic photo frame, glass painting, canvas painting…. which was displayed for parents and school children on 2nd September.

As a part of CCA activity children of Std I to III were adorned in dresses of rainbow colours to welcome the lovely monsoon season and also presented Rainy Songs.

BLISSFUL FLAShES @ G.L.S.by Mrs. bela S. Mehta

“The year you were born marks your entry into the world. Other years where you proved your worth. They are the ones worth celebrating” ! ! !

- Jarod Kintz

Presently our state Gujarat is swaying away in the aura of worship, devotion

and celebration irrespective of caste, creed and religion. The nine day carnival of our state was proliferated at G.L.S with the celebration of the 68th birthday of Shri Sudhir Nanavati – The Ace and the Odysseus of the magnanimous Gujarat Law Society by Shri Devang Nanavati, Hon. Secretary G.L.S., Shri N. R. Shah, Exe. Director;Dr. B. H. Joshi, Registrar, Heads, Principals and other Nanavati family members on 29th Sept.’14.

The momentous celebration drifted into a start with the sanctity of the Aarti & Prasad to Maa Adi-shakti. This was followed by cake cutting, felicitation with a birthday card, flowers, memento and a good luck plant presented by the Directors, Principals, Staff of the Central Office and Heads of the C. U. Ronak Trust.

The celebration was complimented with a topping when Mrs. Amla Shah, daughter of Shri Sudhir Nanavati presented him a collage of all cut outs from the print media which gave a vista into his successful, legal and managerial career.

A Flax hoarding bearing snap shots revealing his moods at various events was also displayed.

Hon’ble Shri Sudhir Nanavati and Madam Rajshree Nanavati were Overwhelmed with the reception. Shri Sudhir

Nanavati whose own day was made very special through the celebration, expressed his gratitude to all those who have been instrumental in taking G.L.S. to soaring heights. He even expressed his ardent desire to accomplish the dream of converting G.L.S into a private University.

In a very modest manner, he also quoted that the Nanavati & G.L.S. family together make him what ‘he is’. They are like his two eyes

which make the vision & mission of his living crystal clear.

“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate”

INFORMATION REGARdING FELLOwShIPS ANd SChOLARShIPSREFLECTIONS ON‘PLAY REAdING’ CONdUCTEd ATSMT.SAdGUNA C.U.ARTS COLLEGE FOR GIRLS

by dr. Sarla Achuthan

Smt.Sadguna C.U.Arts College had organized a ‘Play Reading’event

ofwell-known Indianplaywright Girish Karnad’s play ‘Wedding Album’,part of Semester VArts Faculty Syllabus of English, on the 18th September 2014 in the College.

As the organisers have rightly stated in their invitation to the event, “Play reading is an exercise which bridges the gap between the experience of reading the text of a play by oneself and the experience of watching a full-fledged performance of a play. Normally, plays when taught in classrooms are read out impromptu by the teacher alone or the teacher and a group of students.”

Students of Semester V, English Language of Arts Faculty from different colleges also participated.

My interest in attending the play reading was to understand its pedagogical implications and significance, and to explore the possibility of using the experience for pedagogical research. It reminded me of the “Role Plays” which are very commonly done as a part of Management education where the students play different roles such as Manager, Union Leader, HR person, etc. They encourage thinking and creativity and enable the students develop and practice behavioural skills in a safe setting which can provide motivation and involvement necessary for learning management concepts. Drama and play are collaborative processes and therefore role plays or play reading could be very useful for a learner.

The English teachers who participated in the play reading were:Dr.Rupalee Burke, Dr. Indira Nityanandam,Dr. Jean D ’ S o u z a , P r o f .KshipraPurani,Prof. Shubha Nigam, Dr. KavitaPatel,Prof.KeyurVora, Prof. Rakesh Damir,Prof.VasantJoshi,Prof.

Nitesh Solanki, Mr. ShravanNair, Mr. PranshuJoshi, Mr. SudhirMeena, Mr. KartikS’maniam, Mr. Ankit Prajapati and Ms. Poorvi Acharya.

The participating teachers displayed excellent team work and must have done considerable preparation and planning to bring out the finer aspects of the characters only through words. The tone and the dialogue of each reader depicted the characters very well. Each character came alive before the audience. To give a few examples: Keyur, the father, was great, a very loyal government servant and a loving father; Shubha Nigam best fitted for the role of Vidula whose marriage was the theme of the play; Indira as mother was compassionate, concerned, composed and compromising and reconciling with her situations; Jean as the elder sister, through the modulation of her tone and voice could very well bring to life the process of sibling rivalry and curiosity for kitchen gossip in the family;Nitesh as Rohit played his role well as a high tech media professional and a protective brother. All the others had also had done full justice to their characters, though their names are not being separately mentioned.

Though I had not read the play previously, I could still enjoy and understand the play well. From my point of view, as a pedagogical tool, such an exercise can provide a variety of benefits to the students: Faster comprehension and thereby better understanding, improving the listening ability, which in turn will improve the speaking skills of the students and also pronunciations. There will be better retention and remembrance in such cases, as receptivity will be higher.

The College has taken feedbacks from the audience and they will be able to analyse

GLS AIMS GLOBAL.......

With a view to extend its horizon in the pursuit towards the academic

excellence, SMPIC took this initiative to explore the possibilities of tie ups, collaboration and linkages with the academic institutes of the international repute in the month of August.

A delegation of the representatives from around 11 member colleges of the AOC, UK, was invited with the help of The Head of Trade and Investment, British Deputy High Commission in India. The representatives of the institutes like Burton and South Derbyshire College, Belfest Metropolitan College, Bournville College, Bournemouth & Poole College, Bradford College etc. attended the meet and enthusiastically participated in the interaction. The industry stalwart like Shri Piyushbhai Desai, CMD, Wagh

Bakri Group was also present at the occasion. He insisted on preparing employable graduates with job ready skills.

Dr. Ashwin Purohit, Principal, SMPIC, while addressing the gathering, said, “The world has become a ‘Global Village’ and the geographical boundaries have vanished in today’s time. In this context it is very important that the students and the teachers have an international exposure so that they can develop the competence to face the competition at global level. Such international academic collaborations would help in fulfilling this demand of the time.”

Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati, Executive Vice President, GLS, said while introducing GLS that, “The aim of Gujarat Law Society has always been to prepare the students with global level competence.” He further added, “GLS is always open to anything positive and good. We are looking forward to the mutual benefit from this interaction and would like to see some positive progression towards academic and cultural exchange.”

The function concluded with some important discussions and interaction regarding the possibilities to initiate a process to work out MoUs in this direction.

Recently, representatives from three British Universities – the

Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Highlands and Islands, and the University of Greenwich – had visited NRBBA and interacted with the students and faculty members. This visit was under the aegis of the British Council. The objective of this visit was to explore possible areas of collaboration with NRBBA.

The Director of NR, Dr. Avani Desai, briefed the representatives about Gujarat Law Society, NRBBA and the BBA course structure. In her succinct and highly appreciated presentation, she clearly indicated the areas in which NRBBA wished to collaborate. The representatives were handed copies of faculty details to help identify areas of research collaboration. The visitors then

addressed the students and talked about their respective Universities.

Short-term summer programmes for students, joint research, and faculty exchange programmes were identified as the possible areas of collaboration. The visit ended on a positive note with all representatives expressing keen desire to take the formal talks on to the next level.
