PRINCIPAL’S REPORTThe examinations for Years 7-10 are now complete. Teachers are in the process of finalising examination marks and writing reports. It has been a busy time for our students with the examination period, NAPLAN and Minimum Standards testing. If you have concerns with how your child may be feeling after this period please let the school know so support structures can be provided, and I would recommend contacting your family doctor for advice and additional support as this time of the year can be quite stressful for some young people.

The musical, The Wizard of Oz, is into the final week of rehearsals. All the students involved in the many aspects of the production have been very keen and very professional during the rehearsal period. As I mentioned last time, this is a huge production and involves many students from all year groups – drama, band, chorus, costume, set/props, backstage, makeup, sound/lighting, sales and hall set up. Staff have been involved in all of these areas as well as the sales and promotion of the production. It is very heartening to see students, staff and community come together in such a positive and rewarding venture.

I would like to thank the P&C for their generous donation to support the refurbishment of classrooms into flexible learning spaces. The money will be used to complete the fit out to room AG03 and the remaining funds to commence refurbishment on another learning space. If you would like to have a look at room AG03, I invite you to contact the school and I can arrange a time for you to visit this classroom and discuss the intent and purpose of the fit out. This is an exciting time in learning for our young people. The aim is to develop skills that are transferrable across many domains (which have been underpinned with content). These skills include: collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication, global awareness, initiative, leadership, digital literacy and connectivity (school, community, nationally and internationally). These 21st Century skills are essential in a world-wide economy that moves faster by the day. As a result students learn to guide the change that will inundate their lives and learn how to adapt and react to the demands and complexities post school.

I am looking forward to The Wizard of Oz and invite you to come along to the production (matinees and evening performances available) and be entertained by the talented students of Gloucester High School.

Who: Will Bowden

Role: Scarecrow

Musical Experience: Several years of guitar playing and piano, a few years of singing; never been part of a musical prior to The Wizard Of Oz.

Favourite musical and why: Aladdin… I think it is a perfect animated film. The sets, actors and singing were all flawless.

What are your first impressions of the play?

The film is a masterpiece in many respects and I think that the play does a great job of adapting the story to the stage for a modern audience.

What do you think will be the challenges in staging the show?

Managing the masses of Munchkins and Winkies is by far the most challenging aspect of the play. Having everyone in their right positions, doing exactly what they are supposed to is no easy task.

What are you looking forward to most?

The satisfaction for both myself and my fellow cast members.

How are rehearsals going?

Rehearsals are exhausting but that’s no excuse. They are vital for a good show. We have fun in rehearsals (but only when everyone is on top of their lines).

Who: Makayla Battams

Role: Wicked Witch of the West

Favourite musical and why: Grease. I am in love with Danny Zuko and I watched it when I was younger. The songs never age and I can relate to every character. I chose Grease because it is funny and iconic but also because I do not know many musicals.

What are your first impressions of the play?

I was never a huge fan of The Wizard of Oz so I never paid a whole lot of attention. I may have been unaware that the characters in Kansas were later made into the characters in Oz. My first thought was, ‘Thank god I am not singing’ and that thought has stuck with me throughout the practice of the play. My first impression of the play was that it was long, a thought that has stuck with me.

What do you think will be the challenges in staging the show?

I think allowing myself to become a witch will be a challenge. I feel like I try and hide my inner witch, I know it’s there but I hide it, and allowing myself to become my true form on stage will be a challenge (my true form is a witch, I am a witch). Personally, I have never been involved in such a long performance and had so many lines to remember. I think a challenge all us actors might face is remembering all our lines.

What are you looking forward to most?

I think I have been looking forward to new friendships, something I have found.

How are rehearsals going?

Rehearsals are going well, I am slowly watching people gain confidence in their character and lines.

WIZARD OF OZ: 2019 MUSICAL PROFILE

Who: Mr Scott Davis

Role: Director

Musical Experience: At the helm of the past seven GHS musicals. I used to be a stage manager and later a theatre administrator before becoming a teacher. I learned the craft of direction by sitting in rehearsals alongside many wonderful Australian theatre directors, including my own dad!

Favourite musical and why: I have always loved Les Mis. The first large scale musical I ever saw was The Man of La Mancha. It was supposed to have the famous actor Richard Harris (the first Dumbledore) in the lead role but I think he was sick the night I went and we got stuck with the understudy. Bummer!

What are your first impressions of the play?

Well, after having done two very challenging musicals in Seussical and Into the Woods, I thought The Wizard of Oz might not be so difficult. I was wrong! Most challenging show I have ever produced! But it still possesses the magic I remember as a kid and a great message about the sanctity of home, family and friends.

What do you think will be the challenges in staging the show?

SURVIVING the challenges is the biggest challenge. From a director’s point of view, bringing all the various contributors (lighting, sound, music, projections, sets, props, costumes and performances) together cohesively is the challenge…but it is a great job to have!

What are you looking forward to most?

The sense of fulfilment that I hope the students experience at the end of the process. They have all worked so hard and deserve our utmost respect and admiration.

How are rehearsals going?

Hard going sometimes, but every now and again a student offers a piece of magic that reminds you of some of the rich young talent, both on stage and off, that we have in our humble little school. Chookas!

SCHOOL MATINEE PERFORMANCEAll students are invited to attend a performance of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ on Thursday June 27th. Permission notes and the $5 entry fee must be submitted to the office by Monday June 24th. Permission notes are available through roll call teachers or at the School Office.

UNI UNSW HSC Maths Course Selection Advice

While we encourage everyone to study the level of maths at which they feel sufficiently challenged, below are some guidelines for the minimum level of maths required for some of our degrees. Please also see Assumed Knowledge for more information. Studying at least HSC Mathematics Extension 1 will leave your options open when you choose your university degree. Knowledge of mathematics is a useful skill in any profession, even if it is not required for a particular course. No doubt, you will have to use mathematical tools such as graphs and statistics for the rest of your life. Learning mathematics also teaches you to approach problems in a systematic and logical way. This is a transferable skill that is particularly important in project management and it is an important skill for life.https://www.maths.unsw.edu.au/highschool/hsc-course-selection
