“GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY AND IN YOUR SPIRIT”
HOW WE LIVE EVERY DAY SHOULD GLORIFY GOD
1 CORINTHIANS 6:19-2019Or do you not know that your body is the
temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
20For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit,
which are God’s
• I don’t belong to me• God brought me with the blood of his son• Everything that I am both body and soul belong to God
• IN THE CONTEXT PAUL WAS SPEAKING OF SEXUAL IMMORALITY AND THE ABSURDITY AND INCONGRUITY OF JOINING THAT WHICH BELONGS TO GOD TO A HARLOT
• I SUBMIT TO YOU THAT IN EVERYTHING THAT GOD GIVES US INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO ACT THAT IT IS TO BE DONE IN SUCH A WAY AS TO GLORIFY GOD AND INCLUDES OUR ATTITUDE ABOUT IT
• THAT IS DOING THE RIGHT THINGS FOR THE RIGHT REASONS FOR THE GLORY OF GOD
• MATTHEW 22:38-39 IS THE OVERLYING PRINCIPLE IN EVERYTHING
• I CORINTHIANS 13 ALSO SUMMARIZES IT ALL • WITHOUT LOVE NOTHING ELSE MATERS • JOHN 3:16 • GODS GLORY FOR MAN BEGAN WITH LOVE
• TO GLORIFY GOD IN OUR LIVES AND OUR ACTIONS THE ONLY
PURE AND GODLY MOTIVE THAT WILL PROPERLY GLORIFY GOD IS
LOVE
“ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38“This is the first and great commandment. 39“And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40“On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” NKJV
. 16“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. NKJV
• NOW THAT WE HAVE ESTABLISHED OUR MOTIVE WHAT ARE THE THINGS WE CAN DO TO GLORIFY
GOD• THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN
TEACHES US OVERLYING EXAMPLE OF WHAT A CHRISTIAN IS TO DO
GOOD
GLORIFY GOD AS A LIGHT THE WORLD MATTHEW 5:13-16 13“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15“Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. NKJV
GLORIFY GOD AS A LIGHT THE WORLD • THIS IS ONE OF THOSE STATEMENTS WHICH SHOULD CAUSE US TO LIFT UP OUR HEADS AND MAKE US REALIZE
ONCE MORE WHAT A REMARKABLE AND GLORIOUS THING IT IS TO BE A CHRISTIAN.
• EPHESIANS 5:8• WE HAVE NOT ONLY RECEIVED LIGHT, WE HAVE BEEN
MADE LIGHT; WE HAVE BECOME TRANSMITTERS OF LIGHT• JESUS DID NOT SAY “YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE CHURCH
”; HE SAID, “YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD”• OUR GOOD DEEDS AND CHRISTIANITY SHOULD GIVE
GLORY TO GOD AND NOT OURSELVES
8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light NKJV
GLORIFY GOD AS A LIGHT THE WORLD • “THEATRICAL GOODNESS” IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN
BY JESUS• 1 PETER 2:9• Matt. 6:2, • Such activities do not cause men to “glorify your
Father in heaven”—they serve only as an embarrassment to our Heavenly Father
9But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into HIS marvelous light; NKJV
2“Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
LIGHTING THE WORLD AND GLORIFYING GOD AS A CITIZEN
• Our submission – ROM 13:1-5; I PET 2:13-15• For conscience' sake, and for the Lord's sake• To silence the ignorance of foolish men• Our taxes and revenue (ESV) – ROM 13:6-7• Our respect and honor (ESV) ROM 13:7
I PET 2:17; TIT 3:1-2• Not speaking evil of those in authority• Just as we are not to speak evil of anyone
1Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake NKJV
13Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, 14or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. NKJV
For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.ESV
. 17Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. NKJV
1Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, 2to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men NKJV
LIGHTING THE WORLD AND GLORIFYING GOD AS A CITIZEN
• Our prayers - 1 TIM 2:1-4• For all who are in authority • That we might lead quiet and peaceable lives --
These are our God-given duties as citizens living among the nations!
1Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. NKJV
•LIGHTING THE WORLD AND GLORIFYING GOD AS A CITIZEN
• WE MUST NOT FAIL OUR OBLIGATIONS...• POLITICAL DIFFERENCES DO NOT JUSTIFY SPEAKING
ILL OF OUR LEADERS • EVEN IMMORAL CONDUCT BY OUR LEADERS IS NOT
JUSTIFICATION (REMEMBER NERO?) • WE MAY HAVE LIBERTY, BUT NOT TO DO OR SAY THAT
WHICH IS EVIL – 1 PET 2:16-- ARE WE COMMITTED TO GIVING OUR LEADERS WHAT GOD DEMANDS? [RATHER THAN MALIGNING OUR LEADERS (E.G., "PRESIDENT-BASHING") AND SPEAKING ILL OF THOSE WITH WHOM WE MAY DISAGREE POLITICALLY, LET US FINALLY BE SURE TO...]
16as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. 17Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. NKJV
GLORIFY GOD AS A LIGHT THE WORLD IN ALL THINGS
• IN OUR CLOTHING• I TIM 2:9-10• IN OUR LANGUAGE• EPHESIANS. 5:4• IN OUR PRAYER• MATT. 5:5-6• IN OUR MONEY• 1 PETER 4:10• IN OUR MUSIC• LUKE 8:18
9in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works NKJV
1Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. 3But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. NKJV
5“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. NKJV
10As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. NKJV
18“Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.” NKJV
