Dear Readers,

I’m Dr. Usry of All American Wellness Center. I have been a chiropractor for 26 years - practicing in Palm Beach County. I have often said, “I haven’t worked a day in 26 years.”

God blesses each of us in different ways, and my blessing came in the gift of bringing healing to people through my skills and passion. As I prepare this article for Wellness Spirit Soul Body Magazine, I am emotionally moved by the title of this magazine, which is why I became involved as a contributing writer. I reflect on how many millions of people in our country are suffering deeply in their spirit, soul, and body, and are so separated from wellness.

Many people think and believe that there is little or no hope for normal function and wellness in their lives. Did you know that 20% of our population suffers from the obsessive compulsive disorder known as addiction. This condition affects 60 million people in our country and 20% of them are teenagers. Countless numbers of family members, loved ones, employers, and coworkers, are deeply affected emo-tionally and financially by this condition.

Addictions are so profound and have such a far reaching influence on all of us, that we desperately need a success-ful way to address the chemical, emotional and functional components of this affliction. This subject is neither easy to write about nor to talk about, but I feel led by God to address these controversial and emotionally impacting issues in this article.

As I mentioned, addictions are listed under the heading of obsessive compulsive disorders and there are five main addictions: Drugs - which include nicotine and alcohol; Gambling; Sex; Food; Work; (and some authorities list another, that being; “At Risk Behavior”).

Like so many conditions that affect our spirit, mind, and body, addictions are grossly misunderstood. Most impor-tantly, this is a genetically passed on disease, altering the chemistry or neurotransmitters of our brain and spinal cord; specifically, the dopamine 2 receptor site in our brain and spinal cord, which is the chemical responsible for our feeling of well-being. Known as the cascade reward syndrome, addictions are not, I repeat, are not an affliction of the weak-willed and sinful, but a disease in its truest form that is effecting millions of families worldwide.

Addictions can be triggered by emotional stress. Although additions can change the character of the one suffering the affliction, addiction is a disease, as is diabetes, Alzheimer’s, or depression. There is no longer room to associate shame with this condition. Many who suffer disease have change in mood, tolerance and character, as part of the symptoms of the disease.

As with many seemingly hopeless and impossible problems in our lives, we need to know and remember that nothing is impossible with God.

For wellness to work in the long run it has to become routine. You want to schedule your needs first so that you know you are taking care of what’s most important: You. 5.) Move It.Exercise is one of the best prescriptions to stay healthy and well. Your body requires motion, resistance, stretching and oxygen to stay strong and flexible. Invest in your future by keeping fit.

6.) Eat Well.The foods you consume are filled with chemicals that either help or hurt you. Look through your refrigerator and cabinets and start looking at what is in the foods you are putting into your body. Food is supposed to be the nourish-ment and fuel to keep you going and the building blocks to support growth of new and health cells. Take a daily supplement for overall health and wellbeing.

7.) Relax & Breathe.Everyone needs time to let the body and mind rest and rejuvenate. Whether you like to meditate, pray, listen to nature or inspiring music, shut down and open up.

Color Me HealthyAn Easy to Follow Guide to Disease Prevention

That’s the theory behind a new food plan that empha-sizes the importance of including a variety of health-

promoting phytonutrients in your diet.

The plan follows the Color Code System, devised by David Herber, M.D. Ph.D., Professor of Medicine at UCLA and the director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition.

In his book, “What Color is Your Diet?” Dr. Herber classi-fies fruit and vegetables into seven color groups with each color representing a plant chemical with a specific benefit. What’s great about this system is that people can easily understand which whole foods and which nutrients target which disease.

Red Group: Included in the red group are tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon. These fruits contain the phy-tonutrient lycopene, which may prevent heart disease, lung disease and prostate cancer.

Red/Purple Group: Grapes, grape juice, cranberries, blue-berries, blackberries, strawberries and red apples are part of the red/purple group. These foods contain anthocyanines, an antioxidant that appears to protect against heart disease by inhibiting blood-clot formation.

Orange Group: Included in the orange group are carrots, mangoes, apricots, cantaloupes, pumpkin, acorn squash and sweet potatoes. All high in alpha and betacarotene, these foods may prevent cancer by blocking cell damage caused by oxidation.

Orange/Yellow Group: This group targets the prevention of heart disease and includes the nutrient beta cryptothanx-in. Included in the orange/yellow group os orange juice, papayas, tangerines, peaches, oranges and nectarines.

Yellow/Green Group: Here’s the group that includes spin-ach, mustard greens, turnips, collard greens, yellow corn, green peas, avocado and honeydew melon. Because these are the whole foods that contain lutein and zeaxanthin which target the eyes, they may help prevent cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

Green Group: This group includes broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, Chinese cabbage and kale. These foods contain sulforaphanes, isothiocyanates and indoles which speed up the action of enzymes that break down carcino-gens in the body.

White/Green Group: garlic, onions, celery, pears and chives are rich in flavonoids. Plants in the onion family also contain allicin, which appears to deter the growth of tumors.

Although her parents and a few friends stood by her, there was no escaping the feeling of being all alone and frightened in her critical situation. It was a very difficult time for Bianca as it is for thousands of young girls and women everyday in a similar situation right here in Palm Beach County.

But thanks to First Care, Bianca is now experiencing the joys and blessings of being a new mother! While lovingly cradling little Sophia in her arms, Bianca honestly admits that “if it were not for First Care” she probably would not be holding little Sophia in her arms.

Bianca says, “First Care helped me to again believe in God and trust Jesus Christ with my life. My faith has been strengthened and it’s all because of my renewed relation-ship with God, my family’s love and support, the people at First Care, my church family and a few close friends.”

The support and practical help for Bianca at First Care continues as she learns something new and wonderful everyday about being a mom to precious little Sophia. She attends parenting classes at First Care and earns points that can be used to shop in the First Care Closet which is stocked by donations with the essentials that every new mother and baby need.

Bianca is very grateful that First Care was there at the most critical time in her life to direct her toward a decision she knows she will never regret. She is looking forward to attending college to study for a career in the medical field while building a beautiful life for herself and Sophia as she relies on the Lord daily for strength and guidance. It’s not easy, but Bianca is never alone thanks to her family, friends, and First Care Family Resources.

What is Alkaline Water?Simply put, alkaline water is plain water that has gone through the process of electrolysis, or ionization. (Alkaline water is sometimes referred to as ionized water.) During this process, the water is split into two streams — alkaline water and acid water. Before going through this process, ordinary tap water has a neutral pH.

Meditation is a powerful thing. The ability to meditate, ponder and imagine is a gift from God. The Creator

of the entire universe and all of creation actually tells us in His Word – the Bible – that the key to success in all of life is to meditate in His Word – the Bible – day and night.

Meditation is not man’s idea. It’s God’s idea and one of His great secrets to success – although it is no secret to those who read His Holy Word – the Bible.

Faith, believing, seeing with the eye of faith, calling those things into existence that be not as though they were; these are all gifts and abilities that come from God Almighty. They are not something mankind has come up with.

Unfortunately, mankind has often taken what God intended for good and perverted it and used it for purposes that were never intended by God.

Taking what God has designed for His glory and the good of his creation and using it instead for one’s own vain glory and selfish ambition will always end up to be self-destruc-tive in the final end.

Often people use gifts from God in a wrong way unknow-ingly, thinking they are doing something harmless and even positive. But as Scripture declares, people can perish for lack of knowledge and understanding.

Meditation is a powerful thing.

The questions to ask are:WHAT are you meditating on?What is the PURPOSE of your meditation?WHO or WHAT is being glorified, exalted and lifted up in your meditations?

The Bible is God’s Divine Handbook for life to His human creation and it is filled with Divine wisdom.
