Message from the Co-Presidents: Hello to everyone at GWED-G! First of all, we would like to say from everyone at our chapter that we love hearing about all of the amazing work that GWED-G has been doing in Gulu! The pictures and reports you send to us brighten our chapter meetings, and give us a sense of purpose throughout the year. We hope that through this quarterly report, we can give you a sense of what our chapter has been doing on our end. Our partnership with GWED-G is so important to us, and we want to make sure that we can strengthen it in any way possible. In this report, you will find a list of the events we have completed this semester, as well as notes from each executive board position. We hope you enjoy it! Much love, Nicole and Menaka Co-presidents, GlobeMed at Columbia

Updates from the Network: GlobeMed is honored to have our Executive Director, Maya Cohen, featured in Crain’s inaugural “20 in their 20’s” list!

“The long-term partnership approach appealed to Ms. Cohen. The day after graduation, she flew to Uganda to spend three weeks working at GWED-G, one of GlobeMed’s Ugandan partners. Upon returning, she became a GlobeMed program director and, in August 2011, its executive director. She has since doubled its operating budget, to $640,000, and aims for a $5 million budget within three to five years.”

Messages from our Executive Board

Kathryn Lau, Director of Communications As Director of Communications this quarter, I worked on sharing the stories of GWEDG and our chapter with a larger community. This included maintaining our blog, our facebook page and our Twitter account. I posted photos and stories from events, weekly meetings, the staff retreat, and even Skype calls with GWEDG. I also helped staff members use social media to publicize for GlobeMed events. In February, GlobeMed at Columbia participated in a nationwide GlobeMed social media campaign leading up to World Day of Social Justice, and I posted relevant pictures, quotes and questions on our facebook page, Instagram, and Twitter account. One highlight of this campaign was successfully grabbing people’s attention with a photo collection where our peers declared what they fight for.

Nayan Lamba, Director of Community Building During my time as Director of Community Building so far, I have planned short activities during meetings as well as outside of meetings in an effort to bring the group closer together. One of my main responsibilities this semester was planning a spring retreat at our first meeting for the semester. In order to welcome new members as well as better acquaint old members, I organized both light-hearted and thought-provoking activities, such as an obstacle course game and also a discussion/debate on health-related statements. Retreat seemed to go well, with many members expressing how much fun they had. Since retreat, most CB activities during meetings have been relatively short and also light-hearted. These have included “Speed Meeting,” GlobeMed Taboo, a group version of Two Truths and a Lie, and an icebreaker style game. For the most part, members have seemed to enjoy the activities; though, I am now intending to transition into some deeper community building activities so that people can talk about their personal views on some global health issues, as well.

Diane Wang, GROW Coordinator This semester I've organized the team of GROW interns for our trip to Gulu this summer. We have set the date of the trip to be 5/20 - 6/25, for a total of five weeks. Together, we are creating a media plan in order to bring our experience back to the campus. I am also working with Pamela to create a work plan for monitoring and evaluation while the interns are on the ground.

Conner Fox and Elizabeth Krusch, GlobalHealthU This semester in ghU, we explored Human Rights. We started off the year by reading and analyzing the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and analyzing its strengths, weakness, and limitations. We then spent time discussing whether or not health is a human right. As a chapter, we concluded that health is a human right, but found that the healthcare systems in place limit the public's ability to receive the healthcare they deserve. Finally, we considered the disparities in human rights between men and women, refugees and citizens, the poor and the rich, and the sick and the healthy. Additionally, just this last week, we turned the spotlight to human rights work that is going on in Uganda, and we debated whether foreign intervention helps, or merely perpetuates problems.

Aoife MacMahon and Emily Bakaj, Campaign Coordinato rs Last semester, GlobeMed at Columbia carried out a number of campaigns that spread awareness of GlobeMed and GWED-G, raised a significant amount of funds, and involved a variety of individuals both within and without the GlobeMed network in our mission. The Partnerships team reached out to a number of student groups on campus; they tabled and sold beads at Afropolitan, hosted by the Black Students Association, and a description of their work with GWED-G was presented during the performance’s intermission to the attendees, which numbered over one hundred. In addition, the team tabled at a fundraiser for Engineers Without Borders, further spreading knowledge of GlobeMed’s mission. The Greek Collaboration team worked with the fraternity Sigma Nu to host a trivia night based on global health, which raised both awareness and funds in a fun and effective manner. Similarly, the GlobeMed Gala was hosted in partnership with the Greek society Alpha Delta Phi. Chapter members and their guests mingled over cheese, wine, and conversation, which resulted in a memorable night of community building, increasing awareness, and fundraising. During World AIDS Week, our respective campaign team tabled at the student center with a billboard of condoms, spelling the word “AIDS,” that they had constructed. As students came to take the free condoms, they figuratively made AIDS disappear, demonstrating a creative and interactive means of promoting awareness of a fundamental target of GWED-G’s mission. Our most profitable fundraising campaign for the semester was Individual Giving, which all chapter members participated in. Each individual was photographed on the Columbia campus, and the pictures were subsequently uploaded to our chapter’s newly updated tumblr website alongside a quote by each individual of what he or she fought for as a member of GlobeMed. Each member then reached out to friends and family in person and in email, and shared the tumblr as an indication of GlobeMed’s significance to them. Through these campaigns, GlobeMed at Columbia experienced one of its most rewarding and successful semesters yet, and we hope to carry over these achievements in the semesters to come.

Successes

• Our new campaign structure was a huge success. We had four umbrella campaigns: Awareness, Fundraising, New Initiatives, and Signatures. Each chapter member was a part of a different team, and teams put on multiple events throughout the semester. Because of the changes, we were able to organize and host a lot more campaigns. Our New Initiatives Team also successfully put on STROBEMED, a dance and musical showcase!

• Our community building during chapter meetings was wonderful this semester. The activities were fun and engaging and really helped to build a sense of community.

• Our ghU sessions during this semester on human rights were incredible. We had some amazing discussions on different topics in human rights, and our chapter members learned a lot from the ghU coordinators and each other.

• We launched a new project this semester in order to connect GWED-G to the private sector. Headed by Katherine Krauss, we are working on creating a presentation to pitch a partnership to different companies in the fall.

Areas for improvement • We need to work on organizing larger scale fundraising events. • While we made great improvements in campaigns this semester, there are some aspects we

will work on, such as accountability. • Member retention and engagement is an area that we will work on next semester. • We can still work on community building outside of chapter meetings.

Goals for next year • Better targeting in recruitment. • Streamline campaigns to work out the kinks. • Plan our 3rd annual Hilltop conference. • Launch our Individual Giving Campaign. • Finalize the MOU after the GROW team returns from Uganda.
