What is Wellbeing?

“That's the biggest gift I can give anybody: Wake up, be aware of who you are, what you're doing and what you can do to prevent yourself from becoming ill.”

Maya Angelou

“To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”

Buddha

“The part can never be well unless the whole is well.” Plato

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

World Health Organization

“The way you think, the way you behave, the way you eat, can influence your life by 30 to 50 years.”

Deepak Chopra

“Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.”

Doug Larson

Wellbeing Defined

The five common elements that best differentiate lives that are spent thriving from those that are spent struggling or suffering:

•Career Wellbeing: how you occupy your time and liking what you do each day. •Social Wellbeing: having strong relationships and love in your life.

•Financial Wellbeing: effectively managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security.

•Physical Wellbeing: having good health and enough energy to get things done on a daily basis.

•Community Wellbeing: the sense of engagement and involvement you have with the area where you live.

The Economics of Wellbeing, Tom Rath and Jim Harter, Gallup Press, 2010

Wellbeing in Asia

13

•Tried to play catch-up with western countries, didn’t work, but still interested

•Employee wellness strategy and programming seen as competitive differentiator

•Seen as “the right thing to do” rather than in response to hard data

•However, interest in assessments to focus investment dollars on the rise

•Organizations seeking guidance regarding what to purchase

•Wellness includes spiritual and collective components

•Key issues: stress, suicides – focus on “resilience-building” and its positive connotation

•Classical “wellness” programs (e.g. diet and exercise programs) in demand to address pervasive physical health risks (obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes)

•Increased interest in building a “culture of care” – management development/ coaching to support employees, identify issues & know what to do

•Tradition a challenge to behavior change – e.g. diet

•Key to employee engagement and behavior change – involve family members

Wellbeing in Europe

14

•Still a relatively new idea as a broad concept, but slowing gaining momentum

•Key driver – legislation, liability/risk management – e.g. Companies in Belgium obliged to conduct a workplace wellbeing assessment and action results

•Cultural traditions influence demand for traditional "wellness"-type services – Services historically provided by the State, medical doctor, etc.– Taboo to involve workplaces

•However, things are changing – government need to download more responsibility to companies; influence of US-based multinationals

•Europeans are generally starting to pursue healthier lifestyles

•Other drivers – "Employer of Choice", need to keep older workers longer, absenteeism, productivity

• Employee engagement factors: – The right services (fitness, weight control, healthy

nutrition, sport activities)– Programs that are team-based and fun

• Wellbeing strategy and priorities not driven so much by medical data as in the US; workplace wellbeing assessment drives programming

Wellbeing in the Caribbean?

15

• Health-related initiatives traditionally focused on "safety" and physical conditions

• “Mental health” issues discussed in context of traditions – e.g. Obeah

• Slowing changing – psychological support following natural disasters, workplace accidents and other crises

• Movement to understand “wellbeing” in relation to the whole person is slow

• Usually initiated by governments and academic institutions

• However, companies and unions beginning to get engaged

• Employer interest includes cost containment; retention not as much of an issue

• Healthy activities often done in context of community events – e.g. fundraisers

• Cultural factors play important role in terms of employee engagement– Food choices, ingredients, preparation– Concept of beauty and attractiveness

• Healthier lifestyles and fitness – increasingly a goal among the younger and older generations
