The FDI Global Continuing Education Programme is a very special part of the work of our Federation where FDI puts its name to over 40 events organized each year by its member national dental associations in various parts of the world.

It may be worth reminding ourselves of what FDI’s CE Programme is about. It targets qualified dental practitioners in developing countries, mid-income countries and countries in economic transition. For them, professional development through continuing education is an essential part of the lifelong learning for the dental profession. It is an important aspect of modern evidence-based dental practice and an essential for dentists to maintain an up-to-date clinical and theoretical knowledge of the art and science of dentistry.

The aim of each event is identical: to ensure that qualified dentists, wherever they practice and whatever their age, stay abreast of the latest developments in dental practice worldwide. For the patient, it provides a guarantee of receiving the best in care according to global state-of-the-art. The CE Programme constitutesthe concrete implementation of one pillar of FDI’s global mission—to advance and promote the art, science and practice of dentistry—carried out within the context of ‘leading the world to optimal oral health’. More specifically, it supports and encourages continuing education programmes for the dental team and provides a vehicle for developing, exchanging and disseminating information on all aspects of oral health and oral health care.

The programme on offer during the year 2013-14 was remarkably rich and varied with one event taking place somewhere in the world on average every ten days. Subjects ranged from esthetics, dental materials, implantology, to social issues such as cancer and AIDS and practical subjects such as managing a dental practice. I very much advise readers to look beyond their own region and see what is going on elsewhere in the world. It provides a fascinating insight into priorities and concerns among the global dental community.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate the regional programme directors and local organizers from FDI member national dental associations for a successful series of events of the last twelvemonths. I note with pleasure that the number of programmes in the Middle East has grown considerably in the coming year and would like to thank the newly installed Director for the special efforts he has clearlybeen making to upgrade the offer of Continuing Education in the region.

I also note with some regret that one of the stalwarts of the FDI’s CE Programme and Director for the Africanregion comes to the end of his mandate this year. I would like to thank him for all the work he has undertakento ensure that dentists in Africa have access to continuing education for their benefit in, in particular, for thebenefit of their patients.

On behalf of FDI, I would also like to thank wholeheartedly members of the dental industry whose valuable educational grants and allocations have, over the years, enabled the FDI CE Programme to grow and flourish. I for one, very much look forward to seeing how it develops and expands in the coming years.

“It is my honor to serve as the FDI Continuing Education Programme Director for Asia Pacificsince 2006.

My main responsibility is to organize continuing education events with various national dentalassociations (NDAs) in my region. In most cases, I support a few speakers for an ongoingmeeting of a NDA in addition to their own invited speakers. In other cases, the few speakers I support may be the only speakers they have for the entire meeting. Sometimes, this could be the only continuing education opportunity for their profession throughout the year. It is goodto know that the effort we put in can make a difference in the professional development ofmany colleagues in my region.

There are many challenges associated with this responsibility such as funding and a lot of co-ordination; in other words, money and time. Despite these challenges, I have enjoyed theopportunities to meet many colleagues in different countries and working with the leaders of various NDAs as well as generous sponsors from the industry and others. I also treasurethe opportunities to visit many new places and sharing my knowledge with the profession there.

Being a member of the Education Committee of the FDI, I also have the opportunity to giveinput to the scientific program of the Annual World Dental Congress each year. In addition, I have the opportunity to give input on special projects that the Education Committee wouldtake on. Projects such as the Global Caries Initiatives can be very meaningful as we try to address the problem of caries as a major non-communicable disease affecting the great majorityof the population worldwide and how to strategically keep it under control through preventivemeasures.

All in all, my involvement with the FDI World Dental Federation has given me the opportunityto serve the profession in many meaningful ways. My own professional life has been greatlyenriched as a result.”

Professor Alexandre Mersel was born inStrasbourg France. He earned his doc-torate degree at the University of LyonFrance. He specialized in Prosthodonticsat the Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine. He acted there as Director ofComplete Dentures and Gerodontology.

He was one of the founder and Presidentof the European College of Gerodontol-ogy and also the President of the FDI Section of Gerodontology.

He was elected as FDI Councilor and liaison officer for the EducationCommittee.

Chairman of the Education WG EuropeanOrganization of the FDI for then years.

He is currently:- Senior Research Fellow, Department

of Community Dentistry HadassahFaculty of Dental Medicine inJerusalem,

- Chairman of the Jerusalem District of the Israeli Dental Association,

- Member of the Editorial board of several international journals,

- Member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Academy DentistryInternational.

Prof. Mersel’s activities were mostly focused on the development of the EastEurope Program, participating and lecturing each year at several Nationalmeetings. He launched surveys on thestatus and the evolution of the ContinuingEducation and finally the evaluationsystems. Meantime, he actively partici-pated in a research concerning the relationship between the NDAs and theDental Faculties. All the findings werepublished.

“Globally Dental Education can be divided in three sectors.

- The basic Education is provided by the Dental Faculties and has for task.

- The formation of the future dentist. Post graduated or advanced Education has for mission to transmit more specialized and updated education to degreed practitioners.

- Continuing Education is concerned by General Practitioner, usually degreed dentists working in their office since several years, looking for an updating in their daily practice. Each discipline is devoted for the study of a special field; anatomy as Endodontic, pathologyas Oral Cancer. For a specific population cohort as Pedodontics for children and Gerodonticsfor the elderly. Continuing education should in this perspective be considered as a Special issue devoted mainly for dental Practitioners.

As new CE Program Director for East Europe I foresee my responsibility with a great accountability Obviously it is our obligation to provide a long life education system to our colleagues. More important is also to educate our young Speakers for this specific target: “Educating our Educators”.

Dentistry has tremendously evaluated from a small liberal and conservative profession to a highly advanced technological and sociological Profession that is directly involved in theglobal health system. A valuable evaluation should be established in order to gather all necessary information: “Evaluation for Evolution”.

Finally a permanent communication pattern should be established between the Faculties and the Regional Direction. The future of our Profession depends on the motivation of thepractitioner delivering quality oral health services to their patients.

Therefore communication is the Must: “Motivation by Communication”.

Concerning East Europe there are numerous countries, each one with their own historical and cultural background. Therefore a special attention must be paid to all these differences in order to “Bridge the Gap”.

Running our Program 2014 and trying to fulfill our mission we received a very good feed back concerning the NDA, the participation and the satisfaction of the Dentists andmoreover the enthusiasm of the Speakers. Consequently the majority of them will participate at the next 2015 Program.”
