An Overview of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community The Khalifa of Islam: A Man of Peace

The Ahmadiyya Muslim community is a religious organisation, with branches in more than 200 countries. It is the most dynamicdenomination of Islam in modern history, with an estimatedmembership in the tens of millions worldwide.

It was established in 1889 by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as)

(1835-1908) (photo above) in a small and remote village calledQadian in Punjab, India. He claimed to be the expected reformerof the latter days and the awaited one of the world communityof religions (the Mahdi and Messiah of the latter days). Thecommunity he started is an embodiment of the benevolentmessage of Islam in its pristine purity that promotes peace anduniversal brotherhood based on a belief in the Gracious and Ever-Merciful God.

With this conviction, within a century, the Ahmadiyya Muslimcommunity has expanded globally and it endeavours to practicethe peaceful teachings of Islam by raising hundreds of thousandsof pounds every year for charities, building schools and hospitalsopen to all and by encouraging learning through interfaithdialogue.

The UK chapter of the community was established in 1913 and in1924 it built London’s first purpose-built mosque (in Southfields). It is, therefore, one of the oldest and most established Muslimcommunities in Britain and now has 134 branches across the UK.

His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad was elected as the fifthKhalifa of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in 2003.

His Holiness inspires his community to serve humanity with thespirit of kindness and humility that is integral to Islam. In accordancewith the teachings of Islam he upholds the honour of all prophetsof God and highlights the role of religion in the promotion of peace.

His Holiness has delivered addresses at the House of Commons,Capitol Hill , the Canadian Parliament and the European Parliamentand also written to world leaders urging them to inculcate a truesense of justice and peace in international relations to avoid regionalconflicts from engulfing the entire world.

“Tragically, not a day passes without news filtering in of furtheratrocities and terrorist attacks. Undeniably, the world isbecoming an increasingly perilous place for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Hence, we must stand up against all forms ofoppression, hatred and use all our capabilities to try and fosterpeace in the world. If we truly want peace then the world’spoliticians, leaders, media and parties must act with wisdomand grace."(National Peace Symposium 2017)

After reciting Tashahhud, Taawwuz and Bismillah,Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba, Worldwide Head ofthe Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the Fifth Successorto the Promised Messiahas, said:

“All distinguished guests, Assalamo Alaikum WaRahmatullahe Wa Barakatohu - peace and blessingsof Allah be upon you all.

First of all I would like to extend my deepestcondolences to all those affected by Wednesday’sterror attack at Westminster. Our thoughts andprayers are with the people of London at this tragictime.

On behalf of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community,I wish to make it categorically clear that wecondemn all such acts of terrorism and we offer ourheartfelt sympathies to the victims of this barbaricatrocity. In all parts of the world, the AhmadiyyaMuslim Community seeks to promote peace, andaccording to the teachings of Islam, raise its voiceagainst these brutalities. This annual PeaceSymposium is also an important part of this effort. Iwould like to thank all of our guests for joining ushere tonight.

The Founder of the Ahmadiyya MuslimCommunity said that he had been sent by GodAlmighty in this era, in servitude to the Holy Prophetof Islam, Muhammadsa, in order to spread the twoparamount objectives of Islamic teachings. The firstis to bring mankind closer to God Almighty andsecondly to draw the attention of humanity towardsfulfilling the rights of one another. It is my belief thatthese two objectives are the bedrock for the

establishment of genuine and long-lasting peace inthe world.

As Muslims, we are fortunate that the Quran hastold us that the fundamental purpose of ourcreation is the worship of God Almighty, preferablyin congregation in mosques. Most regrettably, andin complete violation of these peaceful objectives, certain Muslim groups or individuals have turnedtheir mosques or madrassas into centres ofextremism, preaching hatred and inciting others tocommit terrorist acts, against both non-Muslims andMuslims who belong to different sects in Islam.Unsurprisingly, this has caused widespread fear inthe Western world and created an impression thatmosques are a source of conflict and disorder.

It has sparked calls, amongst certain parties andgroups in the West, for mosques to be banned, or atthe very least, for some restrictions to be placedupon Muslims. For example, there are calls to banthe hijab or for minarets and other Islamic symbolsto be banned. Regrettably, some Muslims havegiven others the opportunity to raise allegationsagainst the teachings of Islam. A Muslim is not onlyduty-bound to offer his prayers, but it is alsoincumbent upon him to take care of orphans andfeed the poor, otherwise our prayers will be in vain. This is categorically mentioned in the Holy Quran inchapter 107, verses three, four and five.

It is based upon these teachings that theAhmadiyya Muslim Community is, with the Grace ofAllah, running various humanitarian projects inorder to alleviate the heartache and adversity borneby deprived people, irrespective of creed, caste or

Post, the Belgian counter-terrorism official, AlainGrignard, said:

“Their revolt from society manifested itselfthrough petty crime and delinquency. Many areessentially part of street gangs. What the IslamicState brought in its wake was a new strain ofIslam which legitimised their radical approach.”

Thus, non-Muslim experts accept that the terroristshave established a “new strain” of Islam that can onlybe described as a reprehensible distortion of Islamicteachings. Those who have adopted this new strain, and are mercilessly killing, maiming and rapinginnocent people are, according to the Quran, guiltyof murdering all of humanity.

On the other side, it is also apparent that amongstnon-Muslims, there are certain individuals or groupswho are fanning the flames of division and hostilityand have made it their mission to unjustly defameand discredit the teachings of Islam. For example, ina column published just last week in Foreign Policy, the journalist Bethany Allen, has written about awell-funded and sophisticated US-based network, whose only purpose is to incite Islamophobia and tostop all attempts to promote the peaceful teachingsof Islam. The Foreign Policy article states:

“A well-funded network is trying to strip the rightto speak away from American Muslims andfanning the politics of fear…America’s far-right,anti-Muslim ecosystem has adopted the sametwisted interpretations of Islam that the IslamicState (ISIS) promotes.”

The author further writes that peaceful Muslims inthe United States are the victims of:

“…an increasingly empowered industry ofIslamophobia that constricts the space forbalanced and open dialogue, sidelining the veryMuslims who are doing the most to promotepeaceful, orthodox interpretations of Islam.”

She writes:

“The United States has powerful protections forspeech and religious liberty... but a targetednetwork now seeks to deny Muslims thatfreedom and to treat Islam as a dangerouspolitical ideology, rather than a religion — andto silence and discredit any Muslims whodisagree.”

The article gives the example of a peacefulMuslim convert in the United States. As soon as hegave a university lecture highlighting Islam’s trueteachings, a powerful lobby turned against himand tried to portray him as an apologist for murder, slavery and rape. His family were subjected todeath and rape threats. The university where heworked was inundated with emails demandingthat he was immediately fired. Thus, such casesprove that there is a concerted effort taking placeto influence public opinion against Islam and toprevent its true teachings from reaching a wideaudience.

Based on her research, the author concludes bysaying:

colour. We have established hospitals, schools andcolleges that are providing healthcare andeducation to some of the most impoverished andremote parts of the world. We seek no praise forthese activities, our only desire is to help suchpeople stand upon their own two feet, so that theycan fulfil their hopes and aspirations and hence livecontentedly with dignity and freedom. In this way, rather than becoming frustrated and prone toextremism, they will grow to be responsible andfaithful citizens of their nations. Where they willpersonally develop, they will also help their nation’sprogress and inspire others to follow in theirfootsteps.

Similarly, fundamental to Islamic teachings, is thatMuslims must live peacefully with all other membersof society and never cause them any harm ordistress. Despite this, many people associate Islamwith violence and warfare, even though nothingcould be further from the truth. No matter whatterrorists may claim, under no circumstances areindiscriminate attacks or killings ever justified. Islamhas enshrined the sanctity of human life. Chapter 5,verse 33 of the Holy Quran states:

“Whosoever killed a person…it shall be as if hekilled all mankind; and whoso gave life to one, itshall be as if he had given life to all mankind.”

What a clear and categorical statement this is.Often people query why there were wars in earlyIslam. Similarly, they ask why terrorism is beingperpetrated in Islam’s name. In order to answer thisquestion, I always cite two verses of chapter 22 ofthe Holy Quran, where permission for a defensivewar was first given to the early Muslims. In chapter22, verse 40, Allah the Almighty states:

“Permission to fight is given to those againstwhom war is made, because they have beenwronged – and Allah indeed has the power tohelp them.”

In the subsequent verse, the Quran outlines thereasons for which the Holy Prophet of Islamsa, wasgranted permission to engage in warfare. Chapter22, verse 41 states:

“Those who have been driven out of theirhomes unjustly only because they said, ‘OurLord is Allah’ – And if Allah did not repel some

men by means of others, there would surelyhave been pulled down cloisters and churchesand synagogues and mosques, where thename of Allah is oft commemorated. And Allahwill surely help one who helps Him. Allah isindeed Powerful, Mighty.”

What do these verses prove? Certainly, they do notgive Muslims the licence to inflict cruelties or to seekthe blood of others. Instead they establish the dutyof Muslims to protect other religions and toguarantee the right of all people to believe inwhatever they desire, free from any form ofcompulsion or duress.

Hence, Islam is that religion which has foreverenshrined the universal principles of freedom ofreligion, freedom of conscience and freedom ofbelief. Therefore, if today there are so-called Muslimgroups or sects that are killing people, it can onlybe condemned in the strongest possible terms.Their barbaric acts are a complete violation ofeverything that Islam stands for. Let it be clear thatsuch people have no knowledge of the faith theyclaim to follow.

For example, Mr Sven Mary, a lawyer representingone of the terrorists involved in the Brussels andParis terrorist attacks, recently gave an interview toa French newspaper, in which he described hisclient as having no real knowledge of Islam.Indeed, when asked if he had ever read the Quran, his client readily admitted that he had not and hadmerely read an interpretation online.

Furthermore, a research paper published by theRoyal Institute for International Relations in March2016, also concluded that the terrorists whoidentified themselves as Muslims had little or noknowledge of its teachings. Regarding the profileof young Muslims who have been radicalised andperpetrated attacks in the West, the report states:

“Their acquaintance with religious thought isundoubtedly more shallow and superficial thantheir predecessors’, as is their acquaintance withinternational politics…Injustice was often astarting point with their predecessors’ journeytowards extremism and terrorism. This has nowlargely been overshadowed by personalestrangement and motives as the primaryengines of their journey.”

Furthermore, in an essay cited in The Washington

“The need of the hour is for us toknock down the barriers of fearthat divide us. Rather thanerecting walls that keep us apart,we should build bridges thatbring us closer to-gether… Wemust stand up against all formsof oppression, hatred and use allour capabilities to try and fosterpeace in the world.”

and animosity. Instead, the need of the hour is forus to knock down the barriers of fear that divide us.Rather than erecting walls that keep us apart, weshould build bridges that bring us closer together.

Tragically, not a day passes without news filteringin of further atrocities and terrorist attacks.Undeniably, the world is becoming an increasinglyperilous place for Muslims and non-Muslims alike.Hence, we must stand up against all forms ofoppression, hatred and use all our capabilities to tryand foster peace in the world. If we truly want peacethen the world’s politicians, leaders, media andparties must act with wisdom and grace.

There have been many reports published thatsuggest that a significant number of Muslim youthshave been radicalised because they felt a sense ofgrievance that their beliefs were being attacked andmocked in Western nations. In no way does thisjustify or excuse them and they remain culpable andresponsible for their actions. Yet, common sensedictates that we should not pour petrol on an openflame. Rather, we should seek mutual under-standing, respect the beliefs of others and try to findcommon ground.

In this regard, the Holy Quran has laid down aprinciple of great wisdom and value in chapter 3,verse 65 where it states:

“Come to a word equal between us and you.”

Here the Quran has laid down a golden principlein the cause of peace, whereby it states that peopleshould focus on those things that unite them. Interms of the major religions, the unifying figure isGod Almighty Himself, but this does not mean thata religious person can have nothing in commonwith a non-religious person. Thus, the Quran hastaught us how to build a peaceful, multiculturalsociety, where people of all faiths and beliefs areable to live side by side. The key ingredients aremutual respect and tolerance. Accordingly, atanother place, the Quran has instructed thatMuslims should not speak against the idols ordeities of others, because in reaction, they wouldcurse Allah and a cycle of perpetual grievance wouldresult.

As you will be aware, the theme of tonight’s eventis ‘Global Conflicts and the Need for Justice’, and Ihave said for many years that a lack of justice hasplagued every segment of society and fuelleddisorder. A lack of justice is also observed in theUnited Nations, to the extent that even those closelyaffiliated with the United Nations openly attest to itsshortcomings and its failure to accomplish itsprimary objective of maintaining international

“In the process, they are denying Islam the samefunctional rights that Christianity enjoys andsilencing the very people best poised to reconcileIslam with modern American life. Which may bethe very point.”

Regrettably, we often hear politicians and leadersmaking needlessly inflammatory statements thatare beholden not to the truth, but to their ownpolitical interests. For example, in a speech last year, when running for President, Dr Ben Carson, who isnow a Cabinet member in the new US admin-istration, described Islam not as a “religion” but as a“life organisation system.”

Furthermore, speaking about the Founder ofIslamsa, Dr Carson said:

“What I would suggest is that everybody here takea few hours and read up on Islam. Read aboutMuhammad. Read about how he got his start inMecca. Read about how he was seen by thepeople in Mecca - not very favorably.... How hisuncle was influential and protected him. When hisuncle died, he had to flee. He went north toMedina…That’s where he put together his armies, and they began to massacre anybody who didn’tbelieve the same way they did.”

I agree with Dr Carson, only to the extent that I toosuggest that people take the time to read about thetrue character of the Holy Prophet of Islamsa,. If theystudy impartial texts, they will see for themselvesthat the Holy Prophetsa, was never involved in the“massacre” of non-Muslims and that such claims area complete affront to history. The truth is that, as aconsequence of many years of sustained and bitterpersecution, he and his followers were driven out ofhis hometown of Makkah and forced to migrate toMadinah, where they lived peacefully alongside thelocal Jewish people and other tribes. However, thedisbelievers of Makkah did not let the Muslims livein peace and instead aggressively pursued them toMadinah and waged war, seeking to destroy Islamonce and for all.

It was at that critical juncture in Islam’s history thatAllah the Almighty permitted the Muslims toengage in a defensive war. This permission wasgranted, as the verses of the Quran cited earlierattest, in order to establish the universal principle offreedom of belief. Hence, the allegation that theHoly Prophetsa, was a belligerent leader or a

warmonger is an injustice and cruelty of the veryhighest order and such false claims can only grievethe hearts of the millions of peaceful Muslimsworldwide. History bears witness to the fact thatwith every fibre of his being, the Prophet of Islamsa

sought peace and reconciliation. In this respect, you do not have to take my word

for it; rather, listen to what Ruth Cranston, aprominent 20th, century author, wrote in the 1949book World Faith. Contrasting the defensive warsforced upon the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa, withthe nuclear weapons used by the United Statesduring World War Two, she wrote:

“Muhammad never instigated fighting andbloodshed. Every battle he fought was in rebuttal. He fought defensively in order to survive…And hefought with the weapons and in the fashion of histime…Certainly no Christian nation of 140million people who today dispatches 120,000helpless civilians with a single bomb, can lookaskance at a leader who at his worst killed a barefive or six hundred.”

Thankfully, amongst a climate where it hasbecome the norm to brandish Islam as a religion ofextremism and violence, there remain some non-Muslim journalists and commentators who writewith integrity and justice. For this, I commend themfor swimming against the tide of falsehood andinjustice that has become so commonplace. I wouldalso like to highly commend our honourable PrimeMinster for quoting some verses from the HolyQuran, in some of her addresses and speeches, condemning the accusations that were placed onIslamic teachings.

Here I should also commend an article by JuliaIoffe, published in Foreign Policy, in which sheexamined the history of different religions, includingIslam. At the end she concluded by saying:

“No religion is inherently violent. No religion isinherently peaceful. Religion, any religion, is amatter of interpretation, and it is often in thatinterpretation that we see either beauty orugliness.”

I appreciate this impartial conclusion. As we try topass through these uncertain and precarious times,it is my strong belief that criticising one anotherserves no purpose and can only increase division

peace and security. For example, in an articlepublished by The New York Times, the former UnitedNations Assistant Secretary-General, AnthonyBanbury wrote:

“I love the United Nations but it is failing. There istoo much bureaucracy and little result. Too manydecisions are made for political reasons, ratherthan following the values and objectives of theUN or by facts on the ground…For the UN tocontinue and prosper it needs a completeoverhaul and so an outside panel should examinethe system and recommend changes.”

Similarly, during recent years, certain governmentshave made unjust and unwise foreign policydecisions that have had a very negative effect on thepeace and stability of the world. A well-knowncolumnist, Paul Krugman, recently wrote also in theNew York Times, about the 2003 Iraq War:

“The Iraq war wasn’t an innocent mistake, aventure undertaken on the basis of intelligencethat turned out to be wrong...The publicjustifications for the invasion were nothing butpretexts, and falsified pretexts at that.”

The reason I have given these examples is toillustrate that it is wrong to claim that Muslims arethe sole cause of the increasing conflicts witnessedin the world. Whilst it is undeniable that certainMuslim countries are at the epicentre of today’s warsand cruelties, it cannot be said that the rest of theworld is united and immune from disorder.

For example, there have been numerous reportsor statements indicating heightened tensionsbetween the United States and China and even thepossibility of a war between them. Indeed, it wasrecently widely reported that a close advisor toPresident Trump had said that there was “no doubt”that a US-China war would take place in the next fiveto ten years. Similarly, in January, the South ChinaMorning Post quoted a senior Chinese militaryofficial saying that a US-China war was now not “justa slogan” but, was becoming a “practical reality.”

Likewise, tensions between Russia and the Westcontinue to smoulder and threaten to escalate atany time. Indeed, as tensions continued to mount,Germany’s ex-Foreign Minister, Frank-WalterSteinmeier, took it upon himself to speak out againstNATO military exercises near the Russian border.

Speaking last June, he said:

“The one thing we shouldn’t do is inflame thesituation with loud sabre-rattling and war-mongering…Anyone who thinks a symbolic tankparade on the alliance’s eastern border will bringsecurity is wrong. We will be well advised not toprovide a pretext to renew an old confrontation.”

I agree with the statement of the ex-ForeignMinister that nations should not provoke oneanother or seek to assert their dominance, ratherthey should engage in diplomacy and try to resolvedifferences amicably and without needlesslythreatening each other. Sadly, with the passing oftime, it seems that we are losing our ability to listenand to tolerate opposing views and perspectives.Opening the channels of communication andfacilitating dialogue is essential, otherwise theworld’s malaise will only get deeper.

Anyway, I have cited various reports that suggestwe are moving towards further warfare andbloodshed. Both at an international level and at anational level, we are seeing polarisation and ahardening of attitudes towards one another. Insteadof pointing fingers and blaming one another, nowis the time for solutions. In my opinion there is oneready-made solution that can have an instantimpact and begin the process of healing the world.I refer to the international arms trade, which I believehas to be curbed and restricted.

We all know that in order to fuel their economies,Western nations are selling weapons abroad, including to those nations that are embroiled inwarfare and armed conflicts. For example, just a fewweeks ago, it was widely reported that the new USadministration is signing off on a new arms deal forthe sale of sophisticated and precision-guidedmissile technology to Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, aUnited Nations report published last year found thatwhen it comes to the sale of arms, normal rules oflaw do not apply. It found that an array ofcompanies, individuals and countries had long beencontravening an international arms embargo onLibya and supplying arms to different factions there.

Hence, even where some limited rules apply, theyare not being properly enforced. Whilst the primaryinterest of every nation should be the well-being ofmankind and achieving peace, it is a sad truth thatbusiness interests and the pursuit of wealthinvariably take priority over such concerns.

Reflecting this narrow self-interest, a well-knownCNN host recently said that curbing the arms tradecould result in a loss of jobs amongst Americandefence companies. During a live interview, he said:

“There’s a lot of jobs at stake. Certainly, if a lot ofthese defence contractors stop selling war planes, other sophisticated equipment to Saudi Arabia, there’s going to be a significant loss of jobs, ofrevenue here in the United States.”

Furthermore, it is sometimes argued, that the saleof weapons may actually “encourage” peace, asweapons can act as a “deterrent.” In my opinion, thisview is completely senseless and only encouragesthe further production and sale of extremelydangerous weapons. Indeed, it is such justificationsthat have caused the world to become embroiled ina never-ending arms race. For the sake of the goodof mankind, governments should disregard fearsthat their economies will suffer if the arms trade iscurbed. Instead, they should think about the type ofworld they wish to bequeath to those that followthem.

Many of the weapons being used in Muslimcountries, and even by terrorist groups such asDaesh, have been produced in the West or EasternEurope and so it is time for proper sanctions to beput in place which are effectively implemented. Ifthis one step is taken, I sincerely believe it can havea very significant impact in a short frame of time.Otherwise the alternative does not bear thinkingabout.

I do not need to elaborate, because the articles Ihave cited speak for themselves and point in thedirection of another large-scale war. No country orgroup should be under the illusion that they aresafe, because when wars start they evolve rapidly

and often unexpectedly. If we look back to the Second World War, there

were nations who were determined not to take part, but were eventually dragged into it, whilst alliancesand blocs continued to shift and change. Today, several countries have acquired nuclear weapons, and if even just one such weapon is ever used, theconsequences will be unimaginable and will live onlong after we are gone. Rather than leaving behinda legacy of prosperity for our coming generations,we will be guilty of leaving behind only sorrow anddespair. Our gift to the world will be a generation ofdisabled children, born with defects and intellectualdisabilities. Who knows if their parents will evensurvive to care and nurture them?

Hence, we must always remember that if we seekto pursue our own interests at all costs, the rights ofothers will be usurped and this can only lead toconflict, wars and misery. We must all reflect andunderstand the precipice upon which we stand. Wemust recognise the purpose of our creation.

As I said at the beginning, the Founder of theAhmadiyya Muslim Communityas, came to forge abond between man and His Creator and to unitemankind and so from the depths of my heart, I praythat the world comes to its senses before it is toolate.

My message to the world is to look at tomorrow, and not just to today.

Let us leave behind a legacy of hope andopportunity for our children, rather than burdeningthem with the horrific consequences of our sins.

With these words, I pray that God grants sense tothe people of the world and that the heavy cloudsthat loom above us give way to a bright andprosperous future.

May Allah have mercy upon mankind, Ameen.Thank you to all the guests, thank you very much.”

Your Holiness, members of Ahmadiyya Communityand distinguished guests, I am deeply grateful to beinvited to this National Peace Symposium. Inaddition, it is a totally unexpected honour to receiveyour recognition for lifetime of my service to mycommunity as a social worker helping fellowJapanese immigrants in Toronto, Canada and as adisarmament educator and global advocate for theprevention of nuclear war.

This recognition and prize signify your supportand encouragement for the decades long efforts ofmillions of people around the world who desirenothing less than the prohibition and elimination ofnuclear weapons to ensure real human security tothe people of the world.

In attempting to learn about your organisation’shistory, mission and activities, I learned with pain ofyour struggle and suffering from religiousdiscrimination and persecution. Yet, in spite of it, youhave chosen the principles of non-violence, peaceand justice and exemplify them in your daily livesthrough your motto of ‘Love to all, hatred to none’.What an enlightened role model you are to theworld community. However we have been alarmedin recent years by the rising number of dangeroushate crimes motivated by religion and racism, largely targeted to Muslim and Jewish communities.Governments and citizens of the world mustintensify our shared responsibility of combatingsuch heinous crimes and protect human dignity andthe rights of our fellow citizens.

Tomorrow, I will travel to New York to attend theUnited Nations conference for the negotiation forprohibition of nuclear weapons. This is an historic

occasion that the majority of United Nationsmember states, 123 states, voted for. As one whoexperienced the catastrophic and indiscriminateatomic bombing of Hiroshima as a child and whohas been speaking out against such inhumane, immoral and cruel weapons of mass destruction, forthe past 72 years, I rejoice that at long last the worldis making a significant progress to establish a legallybinding treaty for the prohibition leading to theworld without nuclear weapons. The voice ofhumanity has finally been heard.

In closing, on behalf of the survivors of Hiroshimaand Nagasaki atomic bombings, and other victimsof the nuclear age, I offer my heartfelt thanks foryour commitment to a world of peace and justice.Thank you very much.

Most beloved Huzur, respected parliamentarians,Worshipful Mayors, Your Excellencies, Lords, ladiesand gentlemen. Assalamo alaikum wa rahmatullahewa barakatuhu, May the peace and blessings ofAllah be upon you all.

Welcome to the 14th National peace Symposiumthat is being held on the theme of Global Conflictsand the Need for Justice.

The past year has seen the world become evenmore fragmented and international divisions andtensions have become ever more apparent. Therehas been a renewed focus on nationalism and moreworryingly what was once in the realm of rhetorichas moved into the world of reality. The Brexit votein the UK, the rise of nationalist sentiment in Europeand the deeply worrying signs or a return to nucleararms is threatening the stability of the whole world.

We have also seen the ongoing conflicts in themiddle east, the destruction of homes and cities inYemen, Iraq and Syria and the shocking prospect offamine in Africa. Add to this the ever presentrefugee crisis then one could be forgiven forthinking that we are staring at the beginnings ofperhaps one of the darkest chapters of humanity.

The terrible terrorist attack in Westminster thisweek have brought home the ever present threatof terrorism that seems to prevail across the globe.

And I must take this opportunity to pay tribute toour police forces who do an excellent job in beingthe frontline against terrorism. The murder of PCKeith Palmer reminds us of the heavy responsibilitythey carry and we salute them and honour themand the memory of those who died serving ourcountry as well as the innocent civilians whose lives

were brutally cut short. The response of London was excellent – and it

said loud and clear that terrorist will never divide usand that we will always stand united againstextremism, in every shape and in every form.

Indeed that is the very message that we hope tosend out from this event tonight, that we arepeople of peace and we will never be defeated.

Our community, the Ahmadiyya Muslimcommunity, will continue to play its part in thepromotion of peace and the main reason is becauseour founder, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas –whom we accept as the Promised Messiah andMahdi – came with a very clear and special mission– to revive the true teachings of Islam, to reject theconcept of violent jihad and to rejuvenate the linkbetween man and God. The community hasflourished and is now established in more than 207countries and our global work is inspired by ourCaliph, His Holiness Hazrat Mirza MasroorAhmadaba, and we are truly honoured that he hasjoined us this evening and will deliver the keynoteaddress. He has addressed parliaments across theworld, most recently in Canada.

His Holiness is a man of peace who leads amission of peace and works tirelessly for the goodof mankind, based on an unshakeable belief in acompassionate and merciful God. This is the trueessence of Islam and indeed of all faiths and at atime of rising global injustice it is a message thatoffers hope for humanity.

I welcome you again tonight and hope thattogether we can work to guide the world fromconflict to cohesion. Thank you.

Your Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, YourExcellencies, distinguished guests, friends, BismillahiRahman Nirraheem [In the name of God, Most Gracious,Ever Merciful], Assalamo Alaikum [Peace be upon you].It is a great privilege for me to stand here before you.I want to share with you some of my personalexperiences that have blessed me for the past fiftyyears. I have a great privilege to live in differentcountries ever since my youth, I have met people ofso many different cultures and therefore also so manydifferent religions. I have learned, not so muchthrough books, or through talks or master’s degrees, but through friendships and through relationships Ihave learned how to appreciate. I once discoveredsomething very important which I believe is impor-tant for everyone who is follower of a religious beliefand who is therefore also member of a culture. I couldquote this golden rule as it is expressed in so manyreligions but it would be too long so I just limit myselfto three quotations. And I start with the quotationfrom the Hadith un Nabi [Saying of the ProphetMuhammad] (peace and blessings of God be uponhim), Sunnah [practice of the Prophet] and thereforeit is a Muslim quotation:

“None of you is a Muslim until he loves for hisbrother what he loves for himself.”

When it comes to the Talmud, that is something soprecious for the Jewish believers, it says:

“What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow, because this is the whole Torah, everything elseis a commentary.”

When it comes to Christianity, it is quoted in differentparts of the Gospels but I just quote one:

“In everything, do to others as you would likeothers to do unto you.”

It is so beautiful to read it in Taoism, in Sikhism, inZoroastrianism and so on and even in somephilosophies, which do not claim to be religions butthey are ways of life anyway. And, Your Holiness, I wasthinking that in the global conflicts that we have inthe world and there so much injustice and so muchneed of justice, if we believers of the differentreligions would be able to not only remind not onlyto think of but to practice this golden rule, probablythe world would quickly change. And I want to thankyou, Your Holiness, in a very special way becauselistening often to your talks, to your very manyinterventions in many parts of the world, you havebeen not only a promoter, not only a creator of whatwe badly need today that is the culture of dialogue. You have been a champion of this, you have been anexample and I conclude by witnessing thateverywhere in the world I have met the Ahmadiyyacommunities not only I felt at home, and I must alsoacknowledge the fact that I am not a Muslim, but I feltamong brothers and sisters and this is somethingbeautiful, something wonderful and this is what I amexperiencing tonight here with all of you. And theonly expression that comes from my heart which Ibelieve everybody understands, it is in Arabic but it’svery beautiful, Alhamdulliah. Thanks be to God. Thankyou, Shukran, Shukria.
