Principal’s Desk Week 9 Term 1 BEFORE SCHOOL PROTOCOLS Just a quick reminder that even though staff are on the premises very early in the morning, they are not officially on duty until 8.30am. It is at this time that staff are placed on playground duty to ensure the safety of our students. If children arrive before this time they are to head directly to the covered area outside the hall and are to remain seated. No games or any other activities are allowed as they are not being supervised and the school does not want to risk any injuries. Once the bell goes they then take their bags to the relevant area and return to the supervised playground area depending on their stage. Classes have been reminded of these expectations over the last few weeks. GRANDPARENTS DAY Attached to this newsletter is a copy of the invite sent out last week in regards to the school’s Grandparents Day to be held on Thursday 11 th April. Please ensure that this invite reaches our very special people as we would love to see as many of our valued grandparents as possible. PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS This week the school will commence holding scheduled parent-teacher interviews. These have been booked online with each parent being allocated a 10 minute time. Please ensure that if you cannot make your appointment that the office or the class teacher is informed. These days/nights are very long and it is essential that all interviews are kept strictly to this time to avoid lengthy delays by the end of the session. To cater for parents these are commencing at 1.30pm with students in that stage coming to the hall to be supervised by allocated teachers, Mr Reid and myself. NAPLAN 2019 Students in Years 3 and 5 will sit a practice test later this term. The NAPLAN Online assessment window starts on Tuesday 14 May and finishes on Friday 24 May 2019. Students in Years 3 and 5 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The Year 3 test for writing will not be an online test. One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is that it is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test automatically adapts to a student’s test performance. The test presents questions of higher or lower complexity, depending on a student’s performance. All students in Years 3 and 5 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment. PAYMENTS FOR EXCURSIONS At present the office is finalising invoices for Term 2 with these being sent home soon. I would like to remind parents that these need to be paid by the due date so payments through the Departments Cost centres can be organised in advance. It take approximately 30 days for this process to be completed which is why these guideline and due dates need to be adhered to. Once they have closed it is not possible or students to be included. At all times if any family is experiencing financial difficulty please contact Nicole – School Admin Manager. SWIMMING SUCCESS A huge congratulations to Kate Napoli who was awarded Runner-Up Junior Champion at the recent Zone Swimming carnival. This is a wonderful accomplishment and is the result of a lot of training and hard work. STAGE 2 ETHICS CLASSES Over a week ago, Stage 2 students presently attending Non-Scripture were given a note in regards to Ethics classes being proposed for Term 2. If you wish for your child to attend please return this note to the front office. I would like to remind parents that these were only handed to students attending Non-Scripture which is in line with Department SRE/SEE guidelines. It is proposed that classes will commence next term for those who have indicated interest in Kindergarten. NETBALL WIN You may wander what teachers do when they are not at school. Sometimes you may see them at the shops or even out and about locally. However, some of our teachers have been playing netball of a Tuesday night. It has been quite a steep learning curve for some of the members, having to understand that this game is a non-contact sport and that you are not allowed to run with the ball or hit it out of an opponent’s hands. I have great pleasure on announcing that last week this team played in the grand final and won 34-20! They were all very excited and as I have said in past newsletters, made this old principal very proud.

Have a great week and enjoy the rain again! Kerry Maxwell - Principal

YOUNG SCIENTISTS AWARDS 2018 Last year was an amazing year for our Young Scientists. We had a team of 9 students who represented Glenhaven PS in the three categories of Working Technologically, Mathematically and Scientifically. From this, 2 student projects were selected to receive major awards at Wollongong University. It was an amazing night and I was very proud of Sofie Randell and Lucas Negro. You can see their amazing submissions at this link: http://www.youngscientist.com.au/?page_id=7011 We also had 2 nominations from Glenhaven PS representing NSW in the national competition. Both Jaiveer Vanmali and Lucas Negro had their entries forwarded to the BHP Bilton Science Awards in Melbourne. The boys have both recently found out that their submissions were selected for a Primary Encouragement Award where they received a certificate and a CSIRO Publishing gift voucher. Jaiveer’s Salt Water Battery Investigation was acknowledged as being a wonderful example of what young science minds can achieve. https://www.scienceawards.org.au/Student-Awards?year=2019&schoolLevel=Primary You can read all about Jaiveer’s experience below:

What I loved about the Young Scientist Program I learnt so much from doing my salt water battery project. It was fun to understand how to make electricity from salt water. I learnt how to speak clearly on video. I got to learn fancy words too. I now love science and experiments even more than before. When I grow up I want to be a scientist and invent stuff that protects the environment. Santa got me a chemistry set for Christmas, so I can now experiment some more. Jaiveer Vanmali (Yr1 2019) Later this term I will be holding an initial meeting with interested students who love STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to explain to them the Young Scientist Competition and what it entails. I hope to see many enthusiastic, creative thinkers who will be keen to represent our amazing school at this competition. Kate Zucconi - Young Scientists Coordinator BASKETBALL GYG CUP @ HILLS HORNETS: On Saturday 16th March, 10 eager and excited Glenhaven students represented our school at the Hills Hornets basketball GYG cup. These students versed two other schools for the chance to win $1000 worth of sporting equipment for our school! The students did a basketball skills based race at the half time of the Championship Women game held at 5:30pm at Hills Hornets. The students did an amazing job and definitely did our school proud! Unfortunately we didn’t come away winners, but I was so proud of all the students! Bring on next year! If you ever have a Saturday night free, head down to Hills Hornets for a great night filled with lots of fun and some great basketball! Games are normally 5:30pm (women) and 7:30pm (men). Who knows .. you may even see Miss Cole refereeing!

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT Throughout the term a number of students have trialled for various Castle Hill PSSA teams and I’m happy to report that a number of them have been successfully chosen to represent Castle Hill at upcoming competitions. I came 9th and made the final in the 50m freestyle and my brother Thomas came 14th. We both swam very well and were happy with our performances. George Abbott 6G On the 12th of March I went to the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre for the Sydney West swimming carnival. It was my first time at a regional carnival and I was really nervous but excited as well!! My goal was to make the top ten and fortunately I was able to achieve a 7th place for the 50m backstroke, 6th for the 50m breaststroke and 7th in the 50m freestyle final! I was very pleased with my results as they were all personal best times. I had lots of fun with Thomas and George and I really enjoyed the experience and the atmosphere, competing against all the simmers from the different zones. I can’t wait until next year! PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2019 (PRC) We have made a great start to completing the PRC at Glenhaven – we have 238 students who have already logged online and 31 who have finished their reading record! Our aim is to have EVERYONE complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge by the end of August. Logon is simple – Search for the Premier’s Reading Challenge NSW online, go to that website. On the website click on ‘logon’ and enter your child’s username and password, which is the same username and password that the students use at school to use the school computers and iPads. Once logged in, go to ‘Student Reading Records’. Start typing in the books the child has read. Complete the record by the end of August – 30 books for K-2 and 20 books for 3-6. Students receive a certificate at the end of the year as a record of completion.
