Ama and Alia’s dangerous wordgames!

Poetry and Science – what better mix can you hope for? So here is to our very own version of Science Idol. In order to make the 4 basic types of reactions; Synthesis, Decomposition, Single and Double replacement reactions, more memorable, Grade 8 students were asked to write songs and stories interpreting their structure in personal ways. Which one will get your vote??????

One evening me and my friend Salem went to McDonald’s. I ordered a big Mac Beef and he ordered a big Mac Chicken. When the meals arrived I realized I liked the chicken better than the beef and Salem liked the beef better than the chicken. So we swapped the meals. And both of us enjoyed our meals. Almansour Alsadid 8B

The elements can react The elements can pair The elements can join The elements can share If you want an example Take the synthesis reaction It’s just like a marriage It never gives you………. All reactions have 4 categories they all have tales they all have stories now decompositions it is a divorce they’re split up by something I think it is the force All reactions have 4 categories they all have tales they all have stories

SCIENCE IDOL

Next is single replacement They replace their elements You don’t owe them dollars You don’t owe them cents All reactions have 4 categories they all have tales they all have stories Last but not least Is double replacement It does not give you respect it gives you disgracement All reactions have 4 categories they all have tales they all have stories Hisham Kamal and Eissa Alhashimi 8B

Here are two submissions for the newsletter. The students had to use Latin Root Words to create a monster, and then translate the Latin to English.

Community Service at ADNEC

Students from the Female campus joined as a team in serving the community at ADNEC during AbuDhabi Book Fair 2013. Students who attended at Stand A36 helped in introducing ADNEC visitors

to the book Titled SADAQAH by Dr.Reem El Mutwali. “SADAQAH is a handbook, a resource guide, a call to action and an

inspiration. Based on selected translations from a number of international sources and extensively researched Internet sites, the book offers numerous ideas for making a difference - innovative,

precise, unique acts - none having to do with the size of your pocketbook and all to do with taping your hidden

assets and talents that already exist in your life.”. Our students attended for two days from 2 pm till 6 pm.

This year the grade 10 class is Awesome – Class of 2015! They have started businesses – from restaurants to thrift shops, putting all their knowledge to Action. We also have 2 GSAD Sophomores who start their college experience a bit early:

• Anas Yousef Abou Laban has been accepted for the High School Honors Program at Boston University.

• Saeed Shaiba Al Qubaisi has been accepted to the DSP _ Distingusihed Scholarship Program sponsored by ADIA. Saeed will spend this summer visiing different universities in the USA giving him a first look at university and also an opportunity to improve his English skills.

Both students have been selected because of their outstanding academic achievements . Well Done guys – keep up the excellent work.

A tale of 2 halves… Looking at different sides of the same argument is never an easy task especially when you first have to research all the information you can find about it. Grade 8 were encouraged to become independently motivated

through learning about the American Cilvil War. Each student had to analyze a different aspect of this turbulent era. The battle of Ghettysburg, the role played by women in the war, the division between North and South and many others. They had to research from their text books and from certain websites to help them find information they needed to complete their information boards and posters.

The culmination of their efforts was an in-class information exhibition – the students were able to study and learn from each other. Other groups presented their efforts to the whole class and had to answer enquiries and questions about their chosen topic.

Some students’ comments: “It was time consuming, but we were able to do it in class”. “I could work with others on the same task”. “Talking about something in front of the class makes me very nervous”.

Not just a pile of old chairs! Some students from Grade 8B went to Manarat al Saadiyat. Together with their Art teacher Mrs. Zeina they had so much fun. They saw things from around the world that were placed in Abu Dhabi which is an amazing thing. They saw one of the greates architecture, a story about a princess who looked fat, which made them fascinated. They enjoyed it and it is a great place for children to learn about history.

MASDAR On Thursday the 23rd of May, grade 9 students went to Masdar city during the school day and we as students had lots of fun. Two teachers lead about 56 students to the city of sun as I call it. A young local man took us on a walk between its buildings and the awesome structures there. We entered the college; there were many local and non local students learning about how to use the sunlight in creating new sources of energy. We also rode in the car that has no driver and it works with magnets. This car got the interest of all students who participated in the trip. Finally the student came back from the city carrying with them happy memories that are so unique for them. Ziad Hesham 9B

Over the past two weeks grade 10 Entrepreneurship students have been applying their entrepreneurial skills to the real world while raising money for charity. Students first analyzed the GSAD market and then used their analysis to create business plans that would fill specific niches on the male campus. Once the business plans were approved students were allowed to conduct promotional campaigns and then open their ventures for business. Due to their meticulous planning, creative promotional campaigns and hard work the grade 10 Entrepreneurship class was able to raise nearly 11,000 AED in one week. Students then donated the proceeds to the Red Crescent.

Healthy breakfast

to eat or not to eat

In HS the SRC members were very concerned to spread awareness amongst their peers for a more healthy lifestyle and in particular the importance to eat a hearty meal at the beginning of the day. They organized a competition for all the classes to prepare a healthy breakfast. Each class displayed their sustenance on a table and teachers were invited to come and taste their efforts and then award points according to a rubric that included such categories as food group distribution, processed food used, variety of ingredients and of course effort. All received 100% for the last part! The students rose to the challenge very committedly and not only had very colourful and artistic displays but cooking demonstrations too.

For many students the importance of P.E. lies in being able to play sports and at our school football seems to be the most popular choice by far. The Male campus middle school football league alone can count 16 “5 a-side football” teams. However speaking to the P.E. teachers themselves reveals a more multifaceted life that encompasses skills that are as characteristic off the pitch as on it.

Thank you all for keeping us moving in the right direction

There are 3 themes underlying the teaching of P.E.:

• Skills – basic movement patterns for various types of exercise, playing techniques and game rules

• Fitness – regular activities to build up physical strength and stamina

• Team work – playing by the rules, personal efforts “giving your best” and interacting with others to achieve

More dynamic interpersonal relationships with students, getting to know them in a different way to how a teacher in the classroom would, keeps me coming back year after year.

It is great to be able to dress casually, have fun, move around and compete as an integral part of the subject. I have the pleasure of teaching a class that students run to. Can’t get better than that!!

“I love seeing the look on students’ faces when they perform a new skill for the first time or see improvements in their abilities. Wearing comfortable, sporty clothes every day is pretty good too!”

The greatest reward in teaching P.E. is when you bump into a student in the corridors and the first thing they say is that they are looking forward to the P.E. class. Seeing students interact and encourage each other positively during tournaments and matches puts a smile on my face. No two days are the same and I think I learn something new from my students on a daily basis.

P.E. teachers recently refreshed their knowledge of how to keep our students safe with their first aid training. They also continuously develop their game skills and techniques through their professional development.

Here is a list of just some of the events that the teachers plan and run for our students: Football tournaments; in school, on a local and national level. Swimming galas, sports’ days, basketball and volleyball tournaments. And of course all the different sports on offer as extracurricular activities after school.

Energy Working out does take energy, but it also creates more energy by delivering stores of oxygen and essential nutrients to your tissues. Those supplies can help you stay more active and complete the tasks you really want to do.

Appearance Not happy with the way you look? Exercise can improve your appearance to a certain degree. For example, regular strength

Longer Life Exercise is scientifically proven to help you live longer. According to a National Cancer Institute study people who follow physical activity guidelines for regular exercise have a lower risk of premature death.

Stress Relief Wind down with a workout. The chemicals that physical activity releases in the brain can help you relax and de-stress. It's also healthful to manage the pressure you feel by blowing off steam through exercise.

Here are just some of the reasons you should continue…………..

May 5th

marked the beginning of ‘Footballnomics’ Week at the Glenelg School of Abu Dhabi. During this week students in grades 9, 10 and 11 created presentations that related a wide array of economics concepts to the world’s most popular sport, football!

In this edition we highlight the work done by grade 9 students in their presentation, “Why is a football club a bad business?” Students were able to use their knowledge of types of goods and cost structures to pinpoint several downfalls in owning a football club.

The students commenced the presentation by asking two fundamental questions to the audience; 1) What product do football clubs sell? And 2) How old is your favorite team’s stadium?

The presenters followed this by explaining that the first question relates to the fact that football clubs do not control their ‘product’ in its entirety. Clubs may be able to control entrance to games and concessions at the stadiums but other things like jersey sales, and television rights are not completely owned by the teams.

The second question relates to the importance of innovation in a business. Most clubs take pride in the age of their stadium and see it as a positive asset. However, this is bad business thinking as the goal of teams should be to entice people to attend the stadium not to induce people to stay in the comfort of their own home to watch the matches.

Keep it simple, fun, and stimulating.

It is always a good time to think about keeping the brain stimulated, as well as the body moving over the summer months.

Learning alone and informally, or via a structured group for either part of the day or part of the summer will help to prevent summer learning loss and help you stay sharp for school next year. But, please remember that summer is also for relaxing, taking some time off, and just being a kid. The trick is to balance fun with learning, and with all of the local options available to you, it’s a task worth tackling!

If you think these lazy months should be all play and no work, take a look at the following statistics:

• All students experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.

• On average, students lose approximately 3 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills during the summer months.

• Low-income children and youth experience greater summer learning losses than their higher income peers.

Research shows that teachers typically spend between 4-6 weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer.

Check the school website for summer Math and English activities.

Pick out the books to read. See the summer list on the school website.
