General Manager’s CornerThe summer rains have started and the heat is just as hot as ever, but things are good at the club. We

continued to have golf rounds and food and beverage sales that are keeping us on Budget.

We have been doing many small housekeeping projects now that there is less activity and minimal interference to the membership. Some things that we have done and/or doing are:

Painting in the restaurant and lounge area, upholstery cleaning of the chairs, dry cleaning of the drapes, and a good hard general cleaning. We had some of the lanai tables remanufactured so your knees didn’t hit the crossbar (at no cost). Kitchen equipment removed cleaned, walls cleaned and repaired etc.

Bridge on hole number 3 men’s tee resurfaced, drainage added to the 2nd green, along with a long list of normal horticultural practices. A new motor for the fountain located between Sterling and Saratoga was installed.

The new sidewalks around the community should be completed soon, thus keeping owners from having to walk on the roadways.

The 2014-2015 Golf and Social calendars are completed and there should be plenty to keep you occupied all season long.

I want to thank Kary Bertrand, Food & Beverage Manager for the past 7 years, for her hard work and dedication to our Glen Eagle Food & Beverage operation. Kary will be leaving before most of you return.

Please remember that you are my eyes and ears to Glen Eagle. Since I can’t be everywhere all the time please let me know of things that need attention. A short email to [email protected] or phone call will do.

My door is always open,Peter Costello,General Manager

Greetings from the Golf ShopWe are a few months away from the start of a new golfing

season. If you are on your way back down or have already returned –Welcome Back! – We Missed You! We have a few events left in the summer for you to participate in to get your game in shape before the annual Fall Classic which will held on the 1st of November.

We will Start golf Clinics on Wednesday October 8th. Michael will again be conducting Wednesday clinics and Jeanne will be conducting Friday Clinics. The cost is $15 per player - Limited to 4 players to each clinic - The start time will be 9:00 a.m. for all clinics through December.

Summer heat takes a toll on you grips. We are offering a “Welcome Back” grip special – Sharpro “Tour Velvet Grips - $6.00 each for both regular and midsize .

New Merchandise will start arriving at the end of September and will continue steadily in throughout the season. We have some new lines this year, as well as many of our old mainstays. Be sure to stop in and see everything when you return.

The Golf Shop staff looks forward to serving your golfing needs!

Upcoming EvEnts! The annual Labor Day Tournament will be on Monday, September 1st, with an 8:30 shotgun. The event will feature a “Two Person Scramble” event with a cookout to follow in the restaurant. Flights will be based on the number of teams in the field.

Our final Summerfest Tourney will be on Saturday, October 4th with an 8:30 shotgun. The format will be a 4-person scramble. There will be a cookout to follow. Sign up will begin on Sept. 4th.

November will kick off with our annual “FALL CLASSIC & WELCOME BACK PARTY” on Saturday, November 1st, with a 12:30 p.m. Shotgun. The cost of the event will be $62.00 and that includes the golf tournament and the party. The golf tournament will be a two-person event with 9 holes of scramble format and 9 holes of better ball of partners. There will be a Men’s, Ladies’ & Mixed divisions. Please check the flyers and the Friday flash for “Party” details. Sign up for the event will begin on October 1st.

sWing tip oF tHE montH:In one word: “Balance”. Ever watch someone swing, then “lose” their balance and fall off the ball. This action causes bad golf shots and can be the root cause a bad hook or slice. Balance is sensed through the bottom of your feet and everyone is capable of making a balanced swing. This requires you to start on the balls of your feet and feel like you have a 50/50 weight distribution. You need to maintain this 50/50 balance through the backswing and downswing which will you a better opportunity to transfer your weight forward on the follow through. Finishing on your forward foot will allow you to hit the ball farther and straighter.

Please Note: Sometimes to stay in balance you may have to shorten your backswing. This shorter wing will allow you to stay balance and

strike the center of the club more often. Striking the center of the club and finishing on your forward foot allows you to hit the ball farther and straighter. So in the end remember to take a shorter backswing, stay in balance 50/50 through contact with the ball and hit it farther and straighter.

st. mAttHEW’s HoUsE goLFAtHon –The Results are in from the event. Glen Eagle Golf & Country Club (Comprised of Myself, Nevin Souers, Richard Hogan & Bruce MacGregor) raised Over $10,500. St. Matthew’s house is expecting to exceed $250,000 in total donations for this event.

On behalf of everyone who pledged, I would like to say “Thank You” for your support. The donations are a great help, but the fact that you supported me in the cause is also greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Michael Raber, PGA Head Golf Professional

The Eagle | August, September & October 2014 3

This article is being written well in advance, so it’s hard to say what the rest of the summer will bring. Thus far, we have aerified the greens twice and aerified the fairways, tees and roughs once. We have verticut the fairways and tees once as well.

We are planning to aerify and verticut the tees and fairways one more time in August, but that will all depend on the weather.

We are planning a couple more aerifications on greens, but that is all weather dependent, too.

The slit drain project on #2 is done, that should help the drainage on that green immensely. Drainage is not the entire problem with that green, but I’m hoping this will help enough to keep it going all winter.

We will be cutting and leveling the drop areas this summer and we plan to empty the sand out of a few bunkers and put new sand in them.

The bridge on #3 tee has been redecked and looks very nice. We are putting together a plan for the rest of the bridges.

We have added some irrigation coverage on the red tee on #9 and we will be adding some coverage in the left rough on #1 soon.

We continue to fight the whitefly infestation on our Ficus hedges, we will keep battling but they are a potent pest to these plants. The Whitefly problem is moving to other plants now including Alexander palms and quite a few other trees and shrubs.

We have a lot planned this summer in our quest for constant improvement and if you are a year round resident, please accept my apologies for having things torn up all the time. Thanks for bearing with us and I hope you understand that all of the ripping and tearing we do in the summer benefits us in the fall and winter.

Enjoy your summer and remember……it’s a game, it’s supposed to be fun.

Lacey and I look forward to seeing you on the golf course.

4 The Eagle | August, September & October 2014

Greetings to all of our members from Glen

Eagle! Hope all of you, near or far, are enjoying your summer.

Your Executive Board and various committees have been busy planning for next season which officially begins on Nov. 4th. Fun, fellowship and prizes are in store for us at our Opening Day Luncheon on Nov. 11th.

As details are becoming available from Becky McIntosh and her committee, we are excited about the Member Guest event on March 3, 2015. Save your wine bottle corks for mulligans and flings and start thinking all things Italian as the theme is “Under the Tuscan Sun”!

A new event for the upcoming season is a Charity Tournament with 9 hole and 18 hole opportunities chaired by Chris Rosenheim. This tourney is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29th and will benefit PACE and St. Matthew’s House. Chris and her committee have begun the planning process and searching for sponsors. Please contact Chris if you have ideas or contacts for prospective sponsorships.

We will update you regarding both events as plans progress. Please watch for periodic emails during the summer and fall. Be safe and make it a great summer.

Diane True, President

Ladies 18-Hole Golf

Hard to believe I’m writing this when it seems like summer just started. It’s going fast and soon those of us up north will join those who have been holding down the golf course. While there will be a lot of golf already played, our “Welcome Back Scramble” will be Tuesday, November 4th. Hope everyone is having a good sum-mer and we look forward to getting back to golf-Florida Style!!!!

Congratulations to New Associations’ Officers

REVISED 2014

We are looking forward to a fun and fruitful 2014/15 season!

We hope that some of the lower handicap players will join the blue players this year so that we have more of a variety of tournament games. We anticipate enough Blue, White and Gold players to have the individual tournaments.

The start of the new season begins with a deficit because the cost of prizes and meals for last season was $800 more than we collected. Therefore we need to raise the dues from $40.00 to $42.00 to avoid this situation this year. We are also considering adding a 50/50 game to add more fun and funding.

The two things most commented on last season were that we need to play a four hour round and keep up with the foursome ahead. We also need to improve the integrity of the game by being consistent in our play and that reflects in our scores and in all endeavors.

Please help the Association by submitting your ideas. Your officers this year are: Vince Wepprecht, President; Brad Boyle, Vice President; John Benhart; and Jim Wylot, Secretary. Let’s have the best season ever!

See you on the course,Vince Wepprecht, President, Men’s Golf Association

Good Food, Fine Wines& Great CompanyThe summer is definitely upon us, yet there are many changes happening.

For the first time ever we kept open the Divot. This has been a wonder-ful addition to our dining options. I keep talking up the breakfast…it is fantastic. Stop in and try it if you have not, you will not be disappointed. I have put together the social calendar for the upcoming 2014-2015 season, and I have secured some theatre tickets too. I’m still hearing how much fun everyone had at the pre-season Red Sox game. Unfortunately the schedule is not available yet for ticket purchases for Spring Training games, but I will get that out to you as soon as possible. And of course there will be some staff changes, but I will get to that later.

Our Ladies Night Out program will continue throughout the summer.

The dates set are:

Thursday, August 21st – Dr. Trudy Moon from the Moon Family Health Center will discuss Nutrition and HealthThursday, September 18th – Speaker To Be DeterminedThursday, October 16th – Speaker To Be Determined

We will advertise the speakers one month in advance on the Friday Flash and in the restaurant. Be-ginning at 5:30pm we offer one cocktail of choice and hors d’oeuvres for $12.00++ per person. The speaker usually begins at 6:15pm. This is a great night to ditch the guys and have a little girl time.

Here is a sneak peak at next season’s social calendar. The drill remains the same — you can only reserve one month in advance for a seat. The only exception to this rule would be events that are tickets only such as theatre or day trip outings.

Saturday, November 1st – Annual Welcome Back Party Entertainment by Chicago MobSaturday December 13th – Holly Ball Entertainment by Cahlua and CreamNew Year’s Eve Entertainment by Made in BrooklynSaturday, January 10th – Country Night featuring Hot Damn BandSaturday, January 31st – Key West Party featuring Jim Morris BandSaturday, February 28th – Mentalist Show with Mark StoneSaturday, March 21st – Name that Tune Night with Barry RiebauThursday, January 29th – Theatre Trip to see Phantom of the OperaThursday, March 19th – Theatre Trip to see Jersey Boys (back by popular demand)

Just keep an eye on the newsletter and Friday Flash for more events and information.

Most of you know by now that I have submitted my resignation effective sometime in August. It has truly been a pleasure knowing and working with everyone here. This is a fantastic Club environment. These past seven years have been very rewarding to say the least. Thank you for all of your support. I will sincerely miss being a part of the Glen Eagle Family on a daily basis, but you might see me pop up on some day trips. How can I possibly miss out on all those runs to the Casino?

Kary Bertrand,Food & Beverage Manager

Our Sympathy

We at Glen Eagle are sad to report the following deaths.• Tom Bora, longtime tenant of Montclair Park Villas.• RichardJudnichof Chatham Square II.• RichardDobbins of Addison Reserve.• AudreyKaltenbach of Addison Reserve.• EthelChilds, sisterof Eleanor Jacobson of Oxford Village.• Phyllis Guay of Brittany Place. Our condolences go out to their families.

Sharing News

We are pleased to announce that Joseph (Joe) Hart joined Glen Eagle as our new

Food & Beverage Manager, effective July 29th.

Joe was selected from a list of very qualified applicants. He impressed the selection committee with his prior experience and background from a similar operation, Old Hickory Golf and Country Club in Ft. Myers. Joe steadily rose through their organization structure during his 15 year tenure, from service staff to supervisor to assistant to Clubhouse Manager/Director of Food and Beverage. He has the right attitude and demeanor to fit in well at Glen Eagle.

The selection committee feels that Joe will bring effective leadership to our organization as well as creative concepts and ideas to your dining experience. The committee had no request for big changes with our operation, but better attention to detail, more staff training, with increased menu options. Joe will work for a couple of weeks with Kary Bertrand for a smooth transition.

I would like to thank the selection committee members, Mark Yegge, Bryan Bastow, Linda Duggan, Becky McIntosh and Holly Parkes, for their time in the interview process and for the questions that they asked.

Tennis Talk with RetoHi everyone who is braving the summer heat and humidity. I’m

very proud of all of you who have shown up prior to 10am and still made a tennis day of it! Kudo’s go out to Larry and Frankie Curcio for rounding up people each morning for play.

We will be adding some clay to the courts following the rainy season, and thanks goes out to our maintenance staff that has the courts groomed and ready each morning. Anything we can do as members including dragging the courts after play and/or doing the lines is appreciated.

TENNIS TIP: PALM IS THE CHARMIf youre having trouble meeting the ball squarely on forehand drives, imagine that youre trying to hit it with your palm rather than your wrist. The palm should held perpendicular to the ground and the

racquet too. Make contact with the palm laid back and forearm coming forward and you are on your way to success!

I am around for our full time resident’s during the summer. So don’t hesitate to call or email me to set up group clinics or private lessons.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the courts real soon!
