The Official Celebration and
Naming of Bernard Lane
On Sunday the 22nd of September, members
of the Glebe community gathered to acknowl-
edge the contributions Bernard Smith and his
wife Kate have made to the local area.
Bernard and Kate Smith were the founding
members of the Glebe Society, and were
prominent in campaigns in the early 1970’s to
retain the fabric of Glebe, and to prevent a
freeway being built through the suburb.
To honour Bernard’s memory, the City of
Sydney approved the naming of a lane run-
ning off St Johns Road as Bernard Lane.
The day saw members of the Smith Family
reminisce about Bernard and Kate’s time in
Glebe, with local historian Max Solling talk-
ing about their resident activism.
On the right, we have a photo from the day,
featuring Don Heathcote (son-in-law), Kate
Challis (grand-daughter), Elizabeth Heathcote
(Daughter), Clover Moore (Mayor), Jasper
Hollo (great grandson), Andrew Hollo (Kate’s
husband), Sarah Smith (grand daughter), and
Robyn Kemmis (deputy Lord Mayor).
Previous lanes named by this project include
Elsie’s Walk and Melina Lane. The lane nam-
ing project is proudly supported by the Glebe
Society Incorporated.

UNI IN A DAY with St James, Glebe Primary, and Sydney
Secondary College
The Uni in a Day program has been running annually since 2007. The program has
traditionally been in partnership with Glebe Public School, working with years 5 and
6. In 2012 the program, funded under the University of Sydney’s Widening Partici-
pation Grant has expanded to include year 5 and 6 from St James Catholic Primary
in Glebe and the year 8 Indigenous students from Sydney Secondary College.
The aim of the program is to broaden education outcomes and increase knowledge
of university educational possibilities for school students in the local community as
well as affirm a message of welcome and familiarise the students with the university
campus. This project is done in partnership with the schools and involves a form of
collaborative community building, involving respect, reciprocity and that is mutu-
ally beneficial.
The program involves pre and follow up classroom visits and primary school stu-
dents attend the university for one day and the high school students spread the pro-
gram over two, participating in a variety of interactive workshops across the univer-
sity such as science, law, human movement and archaeology conducted by both aca-
demic staff and university students.
The different workshops provide the students with a taste of what the university of-
fers, as well as a chance to become orientated with the campus and to talk to current
university students about pathways to university and university life.
These lively students had a full day visiting campus and seeing how the university
works! Thank you to all who participated in this event! For more information on the
Glebe Community Development Project, please see the website: http://www-

2004 to increase coordination between diverse stakeholders in Glebe. Over
the years FLAG has met regularly and discussed and taken action on a range

for a number of projects including the annual Mitchell St Fete, NAIDOC week

An after-school program for Year 5 and Year 6 stu-
dents from Centipede Before and After School Service
was held over five weeks at Glebe Town Hall in Au-
gust/September. The program was designed and facili-
tated by Jessica Gale, a Bachelor of Education
(Secondary) (Human Movement and Health Educa-
tion) student from Sydney University with some assis-
tance from provided by another student, Emily Os-
borne. This project was a joint project between the
Glebe Community Development Project, the Faculty of Education, University of
Sydney and Centipede Before and After School Service.
The aim of the project was for the students to have fun, increase their practical skills
and encourage ongoing involvement with education. In particular, this involved
homework skills, literacy and numeracy development, planning and research skills.
Up to ten students participated in activities including ball games, playing maths
computer games, designing posters and making slime. Making slime was very popu-
lar (and messy!).
A big thank you to everyone who came out and participated in our School Holiday
Program! We have a program running in every school holiday period and the events
are free of charge!
In much sadder news, we have farewelled our After Dark Program Manager Sara
Lamedo. Sara has put a lot of her time and effort into making the After Dark Pro-
gram what it is. We are sad to see her move on, but we wish her all the best for the
future!
We would like to announce that Luke Chesworth will
be taking over as the After Dark Program Man-
ager. We are excited to have Luke on board.

$1.50 drinks
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, the HaveAChat Community Café sets up
within the historic old fire station on Mitchell St. Renowned for its great, affordable
coffee and cakes, the café is also infamous for the dreadful humour of the baristas.
Below we have a selection of the best knee slappers and groaners!
Q: What's stranger than seeing a catfish?
A: Seeing a goldfish bowl.
Neighbour: ‘Come quickly! Your dog just bit a man on a bike!’
Joe: What’s the matter with that dog? I told him he couldn’t ride his bike yesterday!
“Daddy,” asked the little girl, “do all fairy stories begin with ‘Once upon a time?’”
“No sweetheart.” the father replied, “some of them begin with ‘if I am elected…’”
And the church sign of the week goes to “At the evening service tonight, the sermon
topic will be ‘What is hell?’. Come early and listen to our choir practice.”
If that isn’t enough hilarity for you, feel free to join the fun down at the café, and
share a chuckle over a coffee!
