The Glass Odyssey Corvette Club (GOCC) is a non-profit organization, incorporated under the statutes of the state of Washington in March 1972. Members, Guests, and

fellow Corvette enthusiasts are welcome!

President’s Message – October, 2015:

If you are into Corvette racing then you should be following the 2015 TUDOR series. There are Only two races remain in the 2015 TUDOR United Sports Car Championship season, and the championships in all four classes are still up for grabs entering the Lone Star Le Mans, set for today, Saturday, Sept. 19, at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas. Then the last race of the season is that Petite LeMans race on 1-3 October at Road Atlanta. Highlighting the title battle is the lead Prototype (P) class, with only two points separating the top-three teams. Michael Valiante and Richard Westbrook, two-time winners in the No. 90 VisitFlorida.com Corvette DP, lead the two Action Express Racing pairings. Defending champions Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi of the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP are second, one point behind, 248-247. Another point back with 246 are Eric Curran and Dane Cameron, drivers of the No. 31 Whelen Engineering/Team Fox Corvette DP - See more at: http://www.imsa.com/articles/two-points-separate-top-three-prototype-teams-heading-circuit-americas-lone-star-le-mans If you haven’t noticed, Mathew McConaughey - a Corvette owner - is pushing Lincoln luxury cars on TV. I don’t know if he is being paid or if the fees are going to charity. OK where are the other big-time stars? Nicolas Cage has about half a dozen Corvettes – maybe we can get him to push a Chevy product and donate the fees to high school Drivers Ed for defensive/safe driving classes that normally cost $400 or more per student. I still think finding a way to finance teenage safe driving training is more than just a dream. We need to think outside the box here. OVAC stands for Olympic Vintage Automobile Club: Dave Ellingson has put in a lot of time setting up the inside booth for OVAC and cannot man it this year. If we don’t show up we lose the chance to sign up car guys to become members. Do you want that? Need 4 two man shifts for 7/8 November.

If you hadn’t noticed, our GOCC website (http://www.kitsapvettes.org/) has a revised format events calendar (above) available for your download and viewing. Michael Dosa likes the Agenda format which is the default display at our website. You can get a weekly or monthly display by clicking on Week or Month at the top of the schedule page. You can also print out a copy of the schedule. I recommend that you do that as an Agenda, a list, versus a weekly or monthly calendar because Google does not wrap the text on the week or month calendar and you will miss some of the information that’s available on the Agenda view. If you want an Excel spreadsheet version, contact me at my email address: [email protected]. If you want to modify the schedule push the button at the bottom of the page, and if you have the ID and the password you can update your events. Michael’s still working on the buttons. Presently those that have the opportunity to make changes are Gary Powell, Lance Otis, Craig White and soon Mary Kay Welch and Drake Evans. We will have a flash cruise after the next General meeting!!! Hope to see you there and save the wave and wave to Dave. Lance

Events: Our September GOCC-Sponsored

“Vettes for Vets”

This is one of our most meaningful events – for the club members, as well as the residents of the Retsil Veteran’s Home where we take our shiny machines for them to look at, listen to – and maybe even sit in them (New rules by the VA Management discouraged us from taking the Vets for drives, the way we used to do, but it is still a great event to be a part of.) Buck’s A&W Root Beer on Mile Hill Drive in Port Orchard was our meet-up spot and the management of Bucks contributed a heaping, frosty load of Root beer floats to all who came out! We take our hats off to them for their generosity. At least two other local Corvette Clubs joined us for this event. Gary Powell (the Vette’s for Vets Coordinator) deserves a big round of applause for all his work to make it a success!

By Christine Dosa SOUNDS

3:15 a.m. Clank of shower door closing and spray of water hitting my husband’s body, bright light blazing from the bathroom. Muffled water splatter sounds seep through the pillow over my head. August 21, 2014, the 20th Anniversary Corvette Caravan to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky begins. Insistent, anxious questions: “Did you pack the water? Are you going to have the house key? Do you need to use the bathroom? I’m going to turn the water off in 10 minutes. Are you sure you have everything?” Dozy answers: “ yup, yup, pretty soon, I’m sure” Coffee maker gurgles and steams-- refrigerator hums. Silence from the dark yard. Rumble of the cold Corvette as it backs out of the garage. On the freeway the red car purrs like a giant cat. Minimal conversation: “I need coffee to get my eyes to focus.” “Me, too” At the Rite-Aid in Kingston, eight Corvettes wait silently in the dark parking lot, roaring into life as they form a procession to the 5:30 ferry. Once on the ferry new noises join the disharmony. Heavy feet clang up metallic steps, sleepy orders for coffee and tea, bell of the register, coins clink into small dividers in the cash drawer. Voices discussing the day’s agenda through mouths munching crumbly scones and slurping hot wake-up liquids. Treble women’s voices blend with men’s booming basses between drowsy laughter and chest-deep yawns. Restroom stalls opening and closing, flushes, hand-washing. Ring of descending feet on metal stairs, slam of car doors. Engines revving and turning, echoing louder as cars exit the boat, the ramp banging as each Corvette goes over it. Beedle-beedle-beedle chimes the 2-way radio. “Turn right at the next light”. “Could you repeat that?” “Turn right on 104.” “Get on the freeway to North Seattle!” Radio voices crackle, fading then returning loudly. The navigation system’s sweet female voice joins in a harsh duet with the radio. “U-turn, if possible”. Bu-rump! We enter the Chevrolet lot accommodating only Corvettes today. Men and women with dealership I.D.s wave their arms:

“Down to the end of the lot and then right—park in a line.”

There is barely room for lines. Blue, yellow, red, white, black Corvettes some with extra plumage that helps them stand out in the crowd: pin striping, flames, flags, a pink one, a Corvette made from 3 different models. All growl in bass tones, like jungle cats ready to spring.

Sausages and bacon sizzle and pop on outdoor grills above the lot. A hubbub of voices:

“Where is the coffee?” “This must have cost them plenty!” “Oh, look, pancakes with blueberries and syrup!” “Are there any eggs?”

Lines of drivers shuffle into the building to long tables. “Where are you from?” “Have you done this caravan before?” “We did it 10 years ago. What a great trip.” “We’ll have a grand adventure.” “Gotta get more coffee.” “Are there restrooms?”

“5 minutes until the Driver’s Meeting.” The PA system disturbs the fresh morning air, even louder than the drivers “Turn left out of the driveway.” “Turn right and drive past two stoplights.” “Get on Ridgeway.” “What was that? Ridgemont?” “Three stoplights?” “No, just two. Follow me.” A calm and orderly procession moves slowly out of the lot, engines pulsing in low gear. “I’m right behind you, Johnson’s are behind us.” “Take the second right.” “Roger that.” “Oh, oh, we missed the light.” “We’ll find a place to wait for you.” “Okay, we see you now. Go!” Through the side streets, onto the freeway to the open road—tires hum with momentum and Corvettes speed with full authority, finally showing unbridled muscle. Purrrr, hooowwwl, ROOOAR—off the leash, the cars hurtle to Idaho to complete the first day of their 2000-mile pilgrimage to their birthplace.

Jan Magnussen set Corvette Racing's quickest time in the 15-minute session to qualify sixth in the No. 3 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R with a lap of 1:43.568 (113.664 mph). Oliver Gavin was seventh in the No. 4 Corvette C7.R with a 1:43.797 (113.414 mph). Sunday's race is the eighth in the TUDOR Championship

The Oak Tree Grand Prix at VIR is a GT-only event for the TUDOR Championship with GTLM and the GT Daytona class. It means that Chevrolet's Corvette Racing team - with 97 class victories around the world - is in prime position to win an overall event for the second time.

Corvette of the Month Dave Van Asten’s 2011 Callaway

A few years ago I submitted my story for the newsletter and it was published. Now that I’ve had the car for about 4 years, I thought I’d include the previous paragraphs concerning how I came about getting my Corvette, but follow up with my few years of ownership hindsight. Off we go ….

Growing up on a dairy farm in rural Wisconsin with short summers and long brutal winters, Corvettes were not the most common of vehicles. But that doesn’t mean someone couldn’t admire them when they did occasionally see them. My only experience with a muscle car until my Corvette was just out of high school when I bought a 70 Plymouth Road Runner with a 440. I still have a soft spot for old muscle and someday hope to purchase another example of it.

The Navy brought me to the West Coast in 1984 with my first sub at NSB Bangor. After 23 years on submarines, I retired in 2005 and now work at PSNS, where I still work with submarines through the engineering department. I have 2 sons who are now both in the USMC and stationed at separate bases in North Carolina. After 3 or 4 years on the sidelines doing my homework on what Corvette I would get, and already deciding I wanted a Callaway conversion on it, in early 2011 I decided to make my move but my timing proved to be very poor. Crystal Red was my primary color choice but the Japan earthquake a few months earlier meant it was no longer available due to a paint pigment shortage. Black was my next choice but 2011 production orders ended and black was dropped for 2012 because of the 100th anniversary special edition Corvette in Carbon Flash Metallic. This forced me to scan dealerships around the country for an already produced 2011 that met my criteria. Four things I told myself it needed – convertible, Grand Sport, Black, and manual transmission, which proved harder than I thought to find. Finally a stroke of luck as I found one at a Long Beach, CA dealership which was only 18 miles from the Callaway shop in Santa Ana. It had a 3LT trim package, gray GS stripes, 2 tone gray/black interior and Competition Gray aluminum wheels. Not the exact options I would have ordered, but I was determined to make it work

with some tweaking. After doing a dealer to dealer purchase thru Lee Johnson Chevrolet in Kirkland, the Callaway people picked it up cross town and began the transformation.

Continued: Dave Van Asten’s 2011 Callaway Corvette

The Callaway conversions are centered on a roots-style super-charger by Eaton, but entail many air and fuel system components upgraded to support it. The end result is a 606 BHP/553 LB-FT torque engine. Options above the base conversion that I chose were chrome finish to the supercharger, a short throw shifter, and a one piece hood, which allows the customer to choose an accent paint color for the center hood section with injector covers to match. I had agreed with Lee Johnson to replace the gray GS stripes with silver ones, so I asked Callaway to paint the hood section and injector covers with the anticipated silver stripes, on which they did a fabulous job. A nice point about having Callaway install the conversion is that it doesn’t affect the manufacturer’s warranty at all. After a few weeks delay in shipment north due to a Monterey, CA Mecum car auction stealing all the enclosed car carriers, it was delivered to Lee Johnson. I finally picked it up in late September with just 35 miles on the odometer and with all the options that I asked for. In hindsight I missed out on most of the summer driving season but have no regrets in my determination to stay the course and get the options I wanted. The only additional change since delivery was my purchase of some Asanti forged aluminum wheels. They were expensive, but I’ve always been a wheel guy and feel they are my favorite feature of the car. I have been thrilled with the car since delivery. Participation with GOCC in community involvements like parades, Retsil Veteran’s Home outings, and club cruises are my favorite. I’ve made 2 cross country trips in it (one in 2012 and in 2014 with the caravan to Bowling Green). I’ve got just over 20K miles on it and it still hasn’t grown old. I’m glad I waited as long as I did to get the Corvette I wanted. I plan to hang on to it and hopefully add to the collection down the line. The C2 is my favorite generation and if I got another it would be an older one from that generation. It would have to be in addition to, rather than instead of the one I currently have though. There’s something about that first Corvette that an owner is hesitant to let go of. Now as an empty nester, I find the house is a bit too big, and the garage a bit too small. I hope to make inroads on fixing that down the road, and by the time I retire have some more toys in the toy box. Until then I plan on enjoying the one I have to the utmost!

This Month's Charity Information:

YWCA Battered Women's Shelter

The ALIVE Shelter is a confidentially located home operated by the YWCA serving abused women and their children since 1978. 24-Hour Hotline: (360) 479-1980. Please feel free to contact Trenna Otis if you have questions concerning this shelter. Basically, if you have ANYTHING available to donate do not hesitate to give her a call. In addition to items you bring to each month's meetings, Trenna will make arrangements for pickup of large items, if needed. They are always interested in used cell phones, which they erase and reprogram to allow for 911 calls only. Ideas for donations include: diapers, blankets, clothes, gift cards, and toiletries. A wish list of items can be found at: http://www.ywcakitsap.org/node/5.

New Charity of the Month Once again, it has been has been recommended that we consider changing the Charity of the Month – this time for October, given that there is still a real-time emergency playing out in Eastern Washington.

Over 500,000 acres of land have burned, to date. A staggering number of homes has been lost; entire towns have been evacuated and three firefighters have lost their lives. In the Lake Chelan area, the fire has burned right down to the water! The proposed recommendation is that we continue to focus on relief efforts needed right now in Eastern Washington. The Red Cross has 7 shelters set up to help the displaced families, there has been a fund set up to help the families who have lost their homes. Fire departments all over Eastern Washington have lost equipment and are running on empty, etc. Some of us think this is an immediate emergency situation that needs our focus right now.

Lest you think your E-Board has been resting on its laurels (or other unspeakable places) I am here to tell you otherwise. In fact, it’s been doing some great things for the club! Our Prez, Lance, has engineered a new, interactive events page which was set up on the club website by our wizardly webmaster, Mike Dosa. On the page, you can select the month you want to see, and if you want more information about the event, just click on it. GOCC-sponsored events are in one color and non-GOCC in another. Go check it out! (Of course, we still need an events chairman….) In addition, the club’s constitution and bylaws have been updated and include the plan of “new-member sponsorships” we approved at our last general meeting. It’s my hope that many of you long-time members will volunteer to take on the role of being a sponsor. Although the bulk of warm, summer days are probably behind us, there are still some great events on the horizon including the Halloween Party at Keith and Mary Kay’s, the OVAC Swap Meet, and the NWACC Banquet. And, of course, there’s still our fun-filled, monthly meetings (Have you checked this newsletter to see if the hidden number is yours?) As for your editor, he will be taking a few days off to head up to Anchorage and visit our cozy cabin in the foothills of the mountain now rightly-renamed “Denali”! - Craig

GM's Trouble With Aussie Trademark Registration Reveals Details about Mid-Engine Corvette

Last week, the Australian car magazine Wheels broke an exclusive report about the trouble that General Motors is having in securing a trademark in the land of Oz for its crossed-flags Corvette logo. Specifically, the Corvette logo trademark has been denied multiple times due to protections that Australian intellectual property laws grants to the Red Cross. However, after reading the article and reaching out to the author who wrote the story, we believe the bigger news is that General Motors, in securing a trademark for its Corvette logo in Australia, is laying the foundation for the future importation of the rumored Mid-Engine Corvette codenamed Zora or ZoraZR1. But first a little background. General Motors announced last year that it will be ceasing production from its Australian brand Holden in 2017, which leaves the Continent without a proper muscle car from GM. Stefan Jacoby, head of General Motors’ international division, told Australian media in January that Holden will get a “halo model” after production of the V8 Commodore ends in 2017. Chevrolet just launched its new sixth-generation 2016 Camaro and according to sources in the program, there are no plans to offer it as a Right Hand Drive model. That would be a requirement for a manufacturer to sell new automobiles in Australia. So that leaves Corvette as a possible choice for Holden. Except the current C7 Corvette is Left Hand Drive only as well and with no plans to reconfigure it for a Right Hand Drive Model, that could only mean a new Corvette will have to take its place. According to the Wheels article, the Corvette would be offered for sale in Australia in 2018, which is also in the time-period that we would most likely see a new Corvette model. That date is significant in a number of ways, including the time frame for completion of the $400+ million construction project for Bowling Green Assembly’s expanded paint shop. Chevrolet’s performance hero is due on sale here in 2018, rounding out a fleet of models set to replace the locally made HSV range once Australian manufacturing winds down in 2017. The issue with the Corvette trademark stems from protection that the Australian Red Cross symbol has enjoyed since the Geneva Conventions Act in 1957. As the Chevrolet crossed-flags logo contains a checkered flag on the left side and a red flag with the Chevrolet bowtie and the fleur-de-lis on the right, its application for trademark protection has been rejected four times as officials say the Chevy bowtie looks too much like the Red Cross symbol. Here’s a comparison of the Australian Red Cross symbol and the 7th Generation Corvette Logo. Wheels says that time is running out for General Motors and the trademark application is in danger of being officially rejected. In fact, about the only thing left for GM in securing a trademark for the Corvette’s logo would be to obtain special permission from Australia’s Defense Minister, Kevin Andrews. A search of the IP Australia database confirms that GM does have the Stingray name trademarked there, and in a deeper search, we also found the trademark registration for the “Zora”.

Vette-Trivia: Barn Find

Kentucky Barn Find: 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Tony Back is so elated with his Vette Rare Find, a month has passed and he hasn’t cleaned the ’72 T-top coupe. “Five or six people have come by my house and said, ‘I hear you found a barn find. You mind if I take a look at it?’” Back is happy to show his treasure but as he explains, “Everybody around here says the same thing, ‘Why haven’t you washed the car? I couldn’t stand that.’” Back tells them the truth. “Once I wash that car, it will never be that dirty again.” In other words, the treasure-find appearance will be gone.

Back read about the ’72 through a small local newspaper ad in his area of Menifee County, Kentucky. Buried in an ad for farm equipment were the words “1972 Corvette Stingray.” On a Friday afternoon you could go view the farm equipment and the Corvette from noon to 2. The sale was the next day, Saturday. Back and a buddy made the drive to the farm. But they thought they would never find the place. They kept driving and driving and driving, up and down hills and around curves. The road got so narrow in places only one car could pass. Finally, they found the farm. “If you drove by this place, you would have never thought a ’72 Corvette would be setting inside. The farm is in the middle of nowhere.” Despite the accumulation of dirt for many years, the paint looks original. The ’72 had been parked in the barn since 2008. Before that, the farmer stored the car in his basement for an even longer period of time. Viewing the car was difficult in the dark barn. “I couldn’t tell a whole lot about it. It was dark and all we had were our phones with the flashlight app. We just kind of walked around and looked to see if it had original paint.” Back warmed up to this ’72 the more he looked. The 38-year-old has fond memories of riding in his father’s ’72 Vette, when he was 5-6 years old and could not see over the dash.

window sticker to insurance and license receipts and everything he’s done to the car.” Obviously, the owner had to think a lot of his Corvette. He just didn’t show it. Back found out the car had been cared for. “He had the motor rebuilt in 2000 – new pistons, rings, cam bearings, timing chain, all that stuff rebuilt, including the transmission.”Back drained the old gas out of the tank, poured in new gas, and then tried to start the engine. “I’m not lying to you. I hit the key and it fired right up.” Back and his father run an auto body shop – Back’s Body Shop in Means, Kentucky. They do insurance work on late-models, but their passion is old American muscle cars and Corvettes. Back has the expertise and the shop to return this car to like-new.

However, who knows, he might just leave the Vette dusty and dirty for a long time.

The engine was the base 350. Back’s friend read off the numbers on the block and sure enough, they matched the last six digits of the VIN. The paint looked original beneath the layers of dust and bird droppings. Maybe there was more to this Vette than met the eye. Back was more than a little enthused when the farmer said he bought the car brand new right down the road in Irvine, about 30 miles away. The original window sticker went with the car, along with an original title. “That’s something you don’t find. A guy buys a car new in ’72 and here it is 2015 and you have the opportunity to purchase it?” Auction day, “everything sells, but the Corvette sells last.” To Back, the owner didn’t seem to care any more about his old ’72 Vette than he would a ’96 Ford Escort. Maybe that’s why the car went up for auction just like it sat in the barn, no clean up. “Here I am nervous, wanting to buy the car. They start out the bid at $15,000, then 10 then 5, then this guy held his hand up and said ‘$1,000!’ I let them run it up there for a while until I was ready to get in. At about $9,500 a guy gets out and I jump in and throw my hand up. The auctioneer says, ‘Got a new man,’ which was me. I run the car up to eleven-four and thought I had it bought. Another guy bidding earlier jumps back in at eleven-five. I got this figure in my head, I’m gonna go 12,000.” At the third and final call Back is high bidder at $11,600, which totals $12,760 with a 10 percent commission. “I went up there to pay and the owner told me to hang on a minute. He brings me back a box full of papers. He’s kept every piece of paper, from the original title and
