Tenpin Bowling

Tenpin bowling is a sport and the aim of the game is to score points by knocking down as many pins as possible by rolling a bowl. This session includes two games; one normal game and one fun game with a special twist! The venue where we play is brand new and there are lots of other free games to keep you amused. All abilities welcome so come down and give it a try!Monday 4th October, meet Glossop Road entrance to Bar One at 18:30, £6. The price includes two games and travel.

ladies RugBy union

Fancy playing with some oddly shaped balls? Want some fun as well as a new way to keep fit? Come along and give ladies rugby a go! No experience is necessary and everyone is very welcome, whether you know anything about rugby or not. Chose a session to suit you:Tuesday 5th October, 17:00-19:00,

Goodwin Sports Centre. Or Sunday 5th December, meet at 11:00 at the entrance to Goodwin Sports Centre, the session will be held on a local school field and will finish at 13:30, £2.

ice Hockey

Come along and try Ice hockey, one of the fastest-paced team sports in the world. In this introductory session you will learn different hockey skills from basic ice skating to shooting and then hopefully how to score! We aim to give you a taster of this exciting sport, who knows… you might turn out to be a pro! Be sure to look out for us at the Sports Fair. Wednesday 6th October, catch the yellow route tram towards Meadowhall and depart at Sheffield Arena/Don Valley Stadium, please be at Don Valley Stadium tram stop at 13:45 where you will be met by one of the team. The session will run until 16:00, £6. All equipment is provided and no experience necessary. Please extra money for the tram fare.

skaTeBoaRding

Skateboarding is still as popular as ever, so why not join in and learn some moves. The Skate Society will introduce you to the local skate house and teach

you all the basics. For those of you with more experience, you’ll soon be doing tricks, flips and spins. This session is suitable for everybody, you never know you could soon be mastering the half pipe. Wednesday 6th or 13th October, meet Glossop Road entrance to Bar One at 15:00, £3. Bring extra money to hire a board.

Muay THai

MuayThai is the national sport of Thailand which uses punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes. During the session you will learn basic techniques and fitness training nothing too intense though. The session is for complete beginners, no experience necessary. Muay Thai is lots of fun and will certainly build your confidence and fitness. This is a shorter session than the later one, and there will be more of a focus on fitness.Wednesday 6th or 13th October, meet outside Goodwin Sports Centre at 18:50, £2. kaRaTe

Karate is a martial art and system of self defence that focuses on striking and blocking, without the use of weapons. It’s great for improving fitness, balance and core strength, but that’s not all there is to it – it is also a “way of life” aiming to develop the mind as well as the body, promoting self-control and courtesy. Come along to one of our sessions to be introduced to the basic techniques of this art, including blocks, kicks and punches.Thursday 7th or 14th OctoberSunday 10th OctoberMeet in front of the Information Commons at 18:10. classic peak disTRicT walk

Fancy a walk in the Peak District? This walk will take in the spectacular Rushup Edge and then move on to Mam Tor for spectacular panoramic views of the Peaks before heading down to Edale for a well earned drink. About 7 miles in length, this walk is a great way to explore the stunning Peak District countryside right on our doorstep. Saturday 9th October, meet by the entrance to the Sheffield train station at 09:45, £3. Please bring extra money for train fare (£4.50 with a rail card). Please wear walking boots and please don't wear jeans; make sure you have waterproofs and bring lunch, water and money for the train and pub. We should be back in Sheffield by 17:00.

poweR kiTing

Come and fly a power-kite with the Uni Kitesoc! Our kites range in size from 1 up to 12 square metres! Steer one as it pulls you around, giving you a fun workout. Advanced kiters can use bigger kites, do controlled jumps and ride on a board. Everyone is welcome to come along and try, just choose a session to suit you. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and bring an extra £1 on the day for your bus fare.Saturday 9th, 16th, 23rd 30th October or 6th November, meet at the Union Box Office, £1. We should be back at the Union by 16:00.

Taekwondo

Taekwondo is the national sport of Korea, and the world’s most commonly-practised martial art. Incorporating fitness, flexibility and self defence, Taekwondo is the art of kicking and punching. These sessions are suitable for absolute beginners, so everyone’s welcome to come along and have a go! Choose a session to suit you:Saturday 9th, 23rd October, 13:00-15:00, Goodwin Sports Centre.Wednesday 13th, 27th October, meet at 17:10 at the Union Box Office. The session will run 18:00-20:00. Monday 1st November, meet at 17:40 at the Union Box Office. All tickets £3.Saturday sessions include free food at Bar One after the training.

Muay THai: VaRsiTy special

swiMMing & waTeR polo

Come and join in this swimming and water polo taster session with the Uni team. Water polo is an exciting team water sport game with the winning team scoring the most points. The game involves swimming, passing the ball whilst being defended, and scoring points by throwing the ball into a net. The game is fast paced and lots of fun. TaBle Tennis TouRnaMenT

Come and try your luck in the Table Tennis Club’s annual Give it a Go tournament. The afternoon will be a knock out session which involves fast play and quick reactions. The winner will be awarded free annual membership to the Table Tennis Club! It promises to be a great afternoon, with a friendly group of people so come along and get involved, everybody welcome.

woMen’s BaskeTBall

Women’s basketball is open to all abilities, so if you’re a novice or a pro come and join in the action. The session will include ball skills and short games so come along and have some fun. Every Monday from 11th October to 13th December, 16:00-18:00, Goodwin Sports Hall, £3.

aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art which utilises strikes, joint locks and throws to neutralise an attack with a degree of control unique to Aikido. Such control allows an attacker to be restrained by way of good technique, power and timing, rather than brute strength

and bone breaking. Shodokan Aikido introduces a competitive element to allow techniques to be practiced in a free-play sporting manner. Choose a session to suit you: Tuesday 12th, 26th October, 9th, 23rd November or 7th December, meet at Glossop Road entrance to Bar One at 18:10, £3. Please wear loose clothing.

TRaMpolining

Experience flying through the air with one of these trampoline taster sessions, which are ideal for absolute beginners and for those who’ve bounced before! Whether you want to try seat drops or somersaults, we will be there with you every bounce of the way! Thursday 14th October or 18th November, 20:00-22:00, Goodwin Sports Centre, £4.

who aren’t confident skaters. You’ll be taught all the basic moves… including how to stop! Think you won't like cricket? You'll love it by the end of this beginner’s session! You'll get lots of help learning the basics and get to meet one of the friendliest Sports clubs in the Uni. So don't worry if you've never held a cricket bat before, just come along and have some fun! Running

Whether you are running for fitness or for London 2012, come and run around the local area with our friendly group. All abilities are welcome, as there will be a number of different groups running at once. It’s a fun and enjoyable way to explore the city and keep fit. Please wear suitable running shoes and for safety reasons wear either a white or

BouldeRing

The Matrix indoor bouldering wall is one of the best of its kind in the UK. At this introductory class you will learn how to use the climbing wall safely and effectively, along with some expert techniques. Choose a session to suit you:Tuesday 19th October, 2nd or 30th November, 20:00-21:00, Goodwin Sports Centre Matrix Wall, £5.

Jiu JiTsu

Jiu Jitsu is a highly effective form of self defence, and provides a means of countering physical attacks, irrespective of the defender’s own strength, weight or gender. These sessions are suitable for beginners… come along and have a go! Choose a session to suit you: Wednesday 20th or Thursday 28th October, 20:00-22:00, Goodwin Sports Centre Activity Room 2, £3.

Mixed lacRosse

Come along for a fun taster session in Lacrosse, learn the basic skills (pass, catch and shoot) and make LAX mates for life. We are a mixed team and welcome new comers regardless of your experience, so come along and get your hands on a racquet. Thursday 11th November, 17:00-18:00, Goodwin Sports Centre Pitch F, £2.

oRienTeeRing

Orienteering can be both a physically and mentally challenging sport, as competitors use a map to navigate around set checkpoints to reach the finish line in the fastest time possible. Complete the course at your own pace individually, in a pair or in a small group. This is an informal event and coaching will be provided by experienced club members. The orienteering will take place in Endcliffe Park.Saturday 13th November, meet at 09:00 in front if the Octagon, £2. We will be finished by midday at the latest. Wear clothes and shoes suitable for running on muddy grass and footpaths.

sHeffield uniTed MaTcHes

Sheffield United FC (aka The Blades) is the city’s only Championship team. Come and watch any of these up and coming games with our special discounted student tickets. This is a great chance to see Sheffield’s best team in action.

cuRling & ice skaTing

Want to try something new, exciting and very unique? Then curling is definitely for you. Give

it a Go has teamed up with IceSheffield to give you the opportunity to try the region’s latest sport. You’ve seen it played in the Winter Olympics so now try it yourself. Curling is a sport that everyone can play; with just one brief lesson you’ll be well on your way, and get the chance to test out your newly acquired skills in a curling competition. Wear trainers for the curling session. Ice skates are provided for the skating session. Wear warm clothing and bring a pair of gloves.Friday 12th November, meet at the reception of Ice Sheffield at 12:00. The session will run to 14:15. 10th December, meet at the reception of Ice Sheffield at 14:00. ladyBoweR ReseRVoiR walk

This scenic 8 mile walk will start in Bamford. We will make our way over to Ladybower Reservoir, where we will walk along the shore and through the woods. The afternoon finishes with climbing the rocky pinnacle of Win Hill for spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding countryside (assuming we have clear weather!), and back to Bamford for a well earned drink.Saturday 13th November, meet by the entrance to Sheffield train station at 09:45, £3. BaskeTBall 3 V 3 TouRnaMenT

Get a basketball team together, then come and play in our fun and friendly tournament. You can enter as a team or come along on your own and we’ll make a team for you. Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and now is the perfect time for you to get involved. fencing

Fencing dates right back to the 14th century and is as popular as ever, with the sport being played at World Cup and Olympic level.

In this session you will get your hands on a sabre sword, learn the basic footwork and attack moves. No experience is needed and all equipment is provided.Friday 19th November, 20:00-22:00, Goodwin Sports Centre Activity Room 2, £4.50.

Bike Ride inTo THe peak disTRicT

Come and join us for an exciting bike ride out of Sheffield into the Peak district. All abilities are welcome but you must have your own bike and helmet. We will be riding through the parks and along bridleways out towards the Fox House and will be returning to Sheffield around 14:30. Make sure you bring a drink and something to eat. snowBoaRding lesson

A beginner’s snowboard lesson at the UK’s largest outdoor dry slope – Sheffield Ski Village. Arms and legs should be covered and bring a pair of gloves. Price includes transport, equipment & tuition. Friday 26th November, meet at Bar One at 14:15, the lesson runs 15:00-16:00, £17.

walk aRound BuRBage

A good hike along the Peak District’s famous edges is the best way to take in the area’s beautiful scenery. Lace up those walking boots, don the waterproofs and pack your lunch to go out on a High Peak walk. We’ll be heading out through Endcliffe Park and ending up at the Fox House pub about 5 hours later. Make sure you wrap up warm and bring some money for a drink and bus fare back to Sheffield. fell Race

Escape from the busy city for a day and experience the scenery of the Peak District. Setting off from Tintwistle, this is a beautiful 5mile route with 1000' climb. Come along for a thoroughly refreshing and enjoyable start to the day! Suitable for varying fitness levels. Please wear clothes and shoes suitable for running on rough (and possibly muddy) ground. Sunday 5th December, meet at 09:00 in front of the Octagon, £3. The cost covers transport but please bring an extra £4 for entry to the race. We will be back at the Union by 14:00.

BuddHisT MediTaTion

Meditation is the art of cultivating calm, focussed, positive states of mind and has been practised in Buddhism for centuries. The leaders from the Sheffield Buddhist Centre will help you discover how meditation can help you cope with the stresses of everyday life. HolisTic face Massage

Learn techniques and theory to enable you to perform a rejuvenating holistic face massage. Why not give yourself a break from all those stresses of university life and experience ‘Oasis’ which is the University’s new and exciting relaxation space. Let your troubles drift away with the rejuvenating

Learn how to decorate and paint your own nails in this creative nail art class. Our beautician will guide you step by step, teach you different designs and bring along a range of colours and accessories. Come and spoil yourself rotten. Never sewn before? Learn how to repair, embellish and create new pieces with a sewing machine. Forget hitting the shops, spruce up your wardbroad with buttons, sequins and lace. You never know, your designs might end up on the catwalk. No experience needed. The course includes a basic introduction from our StitchSoc instructors and all the materials are provided. The once forgotten art of knitting is now the largest craze to sweep the nation. It's ultimately cool to be seen clicking those knitting needles... famous knitters include Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Moss and Cameron Diaz! Come along to this knitting workshop

THe aRT of eMBRoideRy

A valuable opportunity to learn various embroidery stitches, from the simpler chain stitch to the more intricate shisha (mirror) work. Choose from a variety of patterns and colours and walk away with your own embellished motif - just perfect to sew onto a bag or an item of clothing to give you that funky look! Expert one-to-one demonstrations, guidance and materials will be provided. pinHole pHoTogRapHy

A fantastic opportunity to learn about pinhole photography and make your own pinhole camera. A pinhole camera works without a lens and with a light proof box, light passes through the box and projects an image on the opposite side. Come and find out more, as

PhotoSoc guide you through this creative session. At the end of the session you can take away your very own hand made camera and free roll of film. This workshop definitely will be snaptastic! Thursday 21st October, 19:00-21:00, Gallery Eye, £5.

Henna TaTToo

Henna is a natural dye extracted from a henna plant, and is used to create a temporary tattoo by crushing the dried leaves to form a powder. Henna designs range from beautiful and intricate flowery designs to geometric and abstract patterns. Come along to this session and learn how to apply designs yourself using a range of different templates, and come away with your own beautiful henna tattoo.Monday 15th November, 19:00-21:00, Gallery Room 2, £2.50.

This class is for all abilities and welcomes beginners. The class consist of a warm up followed by a short dance and sequence, which introduce the styles and techniques of contemporary dance.Monday 4th October, 20:30-21:30, Goodwin Sports Centre Activity Room 1, £2.50.

Come and enjoy this lively streetdance class-whether you’re a complete beginner or have danced since you could walk, then this is for you! This class is taught by an experienced teacher and you will learn the basics of poppin', lockin' as well as street routines. swing dance

Swing dance is an American style developed in the 1940s from jazz swing music. The dance style is energetic, involves lifts and patterns of step, but with an emphasis of improvisation. Most famous of this style is the Lindy Hop and Charleston. So if you’ve seen the Bugsy Malone movie, come and learn the dance moves. Swing dance is certainly lots of fun and this class gives you the chance to meet new people while learning a new style. Everybody is welcome!Tuesday 5th October, 19:30-20:30 or 20:30-21:30. Come along and learn how to breakdance in a fun and friendly class, with one of the country's best teachers, Sammy The One. oRcHesTRa ReHeaRsal

Come along to an orchestra rehearsal with the Sheffield University Medics' Orchestra. We are a friendly non-auditioning orchestra open to all members of the University (not just medics!). There is no minimum standard and we put emphasis on providing a relaxed atmosphere and enjoyment of playing. So bring along your instrument and join in. Tuesday 12th October, meet at

ModeRn dance

Modern dance is a mixture of jazz and lyrical styles and the Give it a Go class focuses on fitness, flexibility and performance. The modern class is for all abilities and beginners are welcome.Tuesday 12th October, 19:00-20:00, University Drama Studio Room 1, £2.50.

Truly a top night out – live music, dancing, drinking and a guarantee of meeting new people! A ceilidh (pronounced kaylee) involves simple dances to traditional folk and rock music. Don’t miss this fun evening of energetic dances with one of Ceilidhsoc’s glorious scratchbands. No partner or experience is necessary, as simple instructions are given on the night. Get your pulses racing with some silk smooth Latin American moves and sexy salsa. Wiggle your way to a J-Lo bottom or Ricky Martin hips and turns up the heat! Come and get involved with the Latin spirit in this fun filled social environment. Bell Ringing

If you've always fancied having a go at ringing but never had the chance then this is the event for

you! You'll learn the basics of bell ringing , watch how it's done and then we'll get you on the end of a rope and let you have a go (with lots of help and supervision from our very friendly teachers!). You don't need to be a musician, or particularly strong, or a Christian - just bring yourself and lots of enthusiasm. The session will take place at St Marie’s Cathedral. Have you ever wondered how a film is shown in a Cinema? Did you know it takes on average 5 hours to prepare a film that plays for just 2 hours, it’s a bit different to whacking in a DVD, eh? It takes a team of 5 people to show each film every night and a team of 22 people to run a cinema. We are offering you a special interactive opportunity to experience what it takes to run a cinema- starting from publicising the film, housing the film all

London road is the place to go for a meal out, boasting a long stretch of restaurants that specialise in a variety of cuisines. Tonight cooksoc will take you to Pho 69, a Vietnamese restaurant that is a great place to socialise and share good food. There will also be a short tour en route to the restaurant where you can familiarise yourself with the locations of the local Asian grocers and supermarkets around Sheffield, and do any essential grocery shopping. Whether it’s for finding out the places to shop, or just the desire to have some good oriental food, this is one session you shouldn’t miss out!Thursday 14th October, meet in front of the Octagon Centre at 17:50, 50p. Located in one of the UK's first purpose built combined Fire and Police Station in the centre of the Steel City, Sheffield, it's the perfect place to step back in

The museum is now the worlds ONLY Fire & Police museum and it's tower is the only still standing Fire Service Tower of it's type in the UK. There are opportunities to get involved with interactive displays and it’s a great museum to find out more the history of Sheffield. The Kelham Island Brewery was the first independent brewery in Sheffield and is a full mash

pure beer brewery which brews beers using only the finest malted barley wheat, hops, yeast and water. Its sole aim is to produce beers of the highest quality. The visit includes a guided tour where you will be able to check out the equipment and bakehouse. Kelham Island has a fantastic range from early bitters to celebration beers. The tour will finish at the award winning Fat Cat pub (150 year old listed building) where you will have access to the private bar area and enjoy their special brews. RoTHeR Valley counTRy paRk

Rother Valley Country Park is an award winning 750-acre park and is home to a fantastic

range of water sports such as canoeing and windsurfing. You can also hire mountain bikes and spend the afternoon cycling around the lake or you could stop into the craft centre, take a look at the historic watermill. Rother Valley is only a short drive from the city centre so why not make the most of the opportunity to escape the student bubble and get to know the wider Sheffield area and explore what the park has to offer. There is an adventure playground which is great for kids too! Experience the beauty of the Peak District National Park on this very special Give it a Go trip. The day starts with a visit to Speedwell Cavern to check out the world famous Blue John. Once at the cavern you will make your way down 100 steps to a hidden cave to board the boat, it is here where

The boat lands 200 metres below the surface and emerges into a magnificent cathedral like cavern containing an awesome bottomless pit and from here you will see a network of beautiful caverns and rivers. BuYinG TickeTsTickets for all activities are on sale at the Union Box Office, (tel: 0114 2228777). Tickets must be purchased in advance; you can’t just turn up and pay on the door. Demand for Give it a Go is massive and events can sell out very quickly… please buy your ticket early to avoid disappointment! Unfortunately, any tickets purchased are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged/transferred.
