Welcome!

If you are visiting with us today, we welcome you to Second Presbyterian. Please sign our Friendship Pad, which will be passed during the Greetings time of the service. Our Congregational Communities (CCs), also known as Sunday School classes, offer a wide variety of options appealing to various age groups and stages of life. Visiting a CC is the best way to get to know others and become involved. CCs meet on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. For a full listing of classes, visit www.2pc.org/cc.

Weekly Focus on Missions

World Missions: Cary writes to us from the Far East city where she, her husband Brian, and children serve asking that we pray that she will have His plans, His guidance, and a heart of courage, and not of fear. With Ben leaving for college in a few months and Lillian in a year and a half, Cary knows that family transition is approaching. Pray she will want to follow hard after Jesus, keeping Him first, her family next, and ministry third. Pray that she will have wisdom with her work in the orphanage regarding how to coordinate trips, help kids get needed surgeries, and best handle funds. Mission Memphis: Multi National Ministries writes that they are praising God for the overwhelming number of Christmas toys supplied for the MNM children and asks us to join them in prayer for two Middle Eastern families who lost family members in tragic accidents as well as for Hana in Yemen, J. Nguyen, mothers in abusive relationships, and for Thao, who has a heart problem.

WHYMN OF PRAISE: ”Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ODE TO JOY

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above, Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest, Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ, our Brother— all who live in love are Thine; Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus which the morning stars began; Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.

WREADING FROM THE PSALMS: Psalm 8 . . . . . . . . . . . . Courtney T. Humphreys (8:15)Gregory T. Wilkinson (11:00)

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.

Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

what is man that you are mindful of him,and the son of man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beingsand crowned him with glory and honor.

You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,

the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

WCONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ODE TO JOY

God of glory, power, mercy, all creation praises Thee; We, Thy creatures, would adore Thee now and through eternity. Saved to magnify Thy goodness, grant that we extol Thy Name; With our hearts as with our voices now Thy praises to proclaim.

WPRAYER OF ADORATION

Approaching God with Reverence

CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who made us in Your image to rule over all Your creation, we confess with sorrow that we have failed to serve You faithfully: we have selfishly sinned against our neighbor, and we have foolishly violated Your commandments. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. Please forgive us for all of our transgressions, and renew within us a right spirit that we may forever serve You and thereby glorify Your matchless Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS OF CONFESSION

ASSURANCE OF DIVINE PARDON

WHYMN OF SALVATION: “In Christ Alone” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Keith Getty

In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone! Who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save: Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied— For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine— Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

PRESENTATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY ANTHEM: ”By Faith” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Keith Getty

By faith we see the hand of God In the light of creation’s grand design, In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness, Who walk by faith and not by sight.

By faith our fathers roamed the earth With pow’r of His promise in their hearts Of a holy city built by God’s own hand, A place where peace and justice reign.

We will stand as children of the promise; We will fix our eyes on Him our soul’s reward. Till the race is finished and the work is done, We’ll walk by faith and not by sight.

By faith the prophets saw a day When the longed-for Messiah would appear With the pow’r to break the chains of sin and death And rise triumphant from the grave.

By faith the church was called to go In the pow’r of the Spirit to the lost To deliver captives and to preach good news In ev’ry corner of the earth.

By faith this mountain shall be moved, And the pow’r of the gospel shall prevail. For we know in Christ all things are possible For all who call upon His name.

We consider it a privilege to have our children in worship with us. If your small children become restless and vocal, we invite you to the children’s room especially designed for them at the rear of the Sanctuary. They are also welcome in the nursery. Older children should also be encouraged to come to church prepared to stay in their pew throughout the service. One of our pastors will be available after the service to pray for you or to offer helpful direction regarding your spiritual life. He will be in the Gathering Room, which is the first room on your left as you exit the southwest door of the Sanctuary (closest to the pulpit). You may also send your confidential email to [email protected] with questions about your spiritual life.
