On behalf of the Directors of BAMA and Goolarri Media I would like to welcome you to the Christmas edition of Gimme Gimme More News. This newsletter will give you a snapshot of the great achievements made, by BAMA, Goolarri and our staff in 2009 as well as some of the hurdles and challenges expected in 2010.

2009 has been another spectacular year for Goolarri. We have staged many wonderful events throughout the year including Kullarri NAIDOC, Kimberley Girl, the Kimberley Indigenous Performing Arts Showcase and, despite some controversy, Shinju Matsuri. We hope you all enjoyed these Events. Additionally 2009 saw Goolarri open up our Conference Centre to great success, with many organisations benefiting from the facility.

The GTV crew have continued to make world class productions, showcasing our culture and region to the world. Radio Goolarri 99.7FM continues to rule the airwaves with information, local shows and our reality-based training program has continued to service many students from across the Kimberley and Pilbara. The Balyarr Open Learning Centre has flourished in its first year of operations and the number of young people using the OLC has far exceeded our expectations.

Goolarri has continued to foster and create new partnerships across all sectors, to assist us in being able to achieve and deliver a multitude of services and initiatives this year for our community and our people. It is with these meaningful and successful partnerships that dreams can be realized. I would like to sincerely thank all our sponsors and partners who have contributed to ensure that Goolarri can continue to do its fantastic work. Everyone’s contribution counts.

This is not to say that there haven’t been hard times. We are continuing our discussion with Government about the importance and benefits of digitising culture and community, however we still have a long way to go in this discussion. Hand in hand with this, we are still trying to get the Government to see and fund Goolarri in a holistic manner, rather than in piecemeal silos.

We were recently notified that we were unsuccessful in obtaining multi-year funding through the Australia Council for the Arts. This funding was to enhance and grow our successful Indigenous Music strategy and we are extremely disappointed that we did not receive this funding and will be pursuing this decision with vigour. We will now have to review our Music strategy and adjust it accordingly. Our financial resource package from the State Government is due to run out early in 2010 so we are currently working on strategies to compensate for this.

I would at this time like to acknowledge all the staff here at Goolarri for all the effort and hard work they have put into Goolarri this year. It’s never easy, quite often it goes unnoticed and unappreciated, but every single staff member, at some point, has gone above and beyond, to help meet the objectives set by our Board. Without this effort by staff, Goolarri would not be what it is.

Message from the CEO2010 promises to be another challenging and rewarding year. We will continue to push for the sustainability of Goolarri into the 21st Century. We will continue to push the Government to recognise Goolarri as the enabling and capacity building social enterprise that it is. We will continue to stay abreast of technology changes that affect our community, including the imminent digital television conversion in 2013. So keep the dial on 99.7FM, stay tuned to GTV35, attend the many events planned and utilise our open learning centre so that we can continue to digitise our Culture and Community, share the wonderful stories and artistic talents with you all and allow our youth to have hope, gain meaningful employment and strive for excellence.

Once again, a big thank you to all the individuals and businesses who continue to support us and a reminder to all that the “BAMA Gift Account” allows philanthropic organisations, businesses and individuals to make tax deductible donations to the Content Fund established to be used wholly and solely for digitising community and culture. I urge all businesses and friends of Goolarri to make a donation and a big thanks to all who have already made a contribution.

Please feel free to come and visit Goolarri at any time, and we welcome any feedback or suggestions you may have to improve our service to you.

On behalf of the Directors of both BAMA and Goolarri Media, I wish you all a very safe and merry holiday season and look forward to working with you all in 2010.

GTV 35 continues to produce a very high standard and vast array of television commercials. For the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation – AERF, six stylized and dramatic commercials were accomplished and one was a finalist at the Australian Video Producers Awards. AERF want to take these commercials nationally due to the outstanding work which was created.

The dramatic drink driving commercial “Shame” and the comic “Don’t Be stupid” seat belt commercial for the Office of Road Safety both won awards at the Australian Video Producers awards to great applause.

We are currently producing a series of DVD’s and commercials about domestic violence for Kinway. The DVD’s have involved some very careful filming and the commercials will feature prominent people from the community.

This will be a very noticed campaign with a high impact.

We are also currently producing two commercials for the Australian Government with elaborate costumes for a family of ‘crocodiles’, with some rather outrageous and over-sized props.

A beautiful video for Broome Bird Observatory was launched at the Luggers to great applause.

A series for the ABC about “Bush Cooks” was filmed by trainees Clint and Arthur, which looks great and is on the net and currently going to air on GTV.

Talking Country series has seen the GTV crew traveling far and wide to produce these stories in various languages. Crews have just completed filming various elements and traveled to numerous locations for Place Names, Coast Care and a Yawuru Project.

There are busy times ahead with the post-production of a lot of productions in the can to be done. GTV has been extremely busy in this run up to Christmas with multiple productions being filmed simultaneously, however we continue to excel and produce high quality content.

The year is winding down for the Events Team and with one last event to go for the year things seem to be slowing down in our event venue’s however now comes the submission and grant writing, planning and preparations underway to do it all again, bigger and better in 2010.

Kimberley Girl 2009 was a success and again continued to up the anti by combining heat one and two into one huge night of entertainment. This year Aimee Howard was named Kimberley Girl for 2009 and we believe that she will be a great spokesperson and role model for our community while in her role and for many years to come. Other winners included 1st Runner up Jahlana Roe, 2nd Runner up Adele Peek, Most Photogenic was Marlikka Peridrisat and the Judges Choice was awarded to Jessica Edgar.

Thank you to all our wonderful sponsors which supported this great event and assisted in the development of the youth of the Kimberley.

Recently Goolarri had the pleasure of working with Marrugeku Productions to present Burning Daylight to the Broome community, which saw sold out nights and great reviews from the Broome community each night it was performed.

Goolarri events are never complete without the sounds of Broome entertaining the audience in the barmy nights, and both the Gooyaal Disability Mango Jamming charity gig and the exclusive single performance from Broome old school band the Kuckles were no exceptions!

Thank you to all our Event sponsors that have kindly supported our events throughout the year of 2009 as you have contributed to the success of each of the events.

The events team are looking forward to having a well deserved break to recharge our energy and come back next year with fresh ideas, dreams and goals for 2010.

MusicGoolarri Music Development continues to support and showcase Indigenous musicians and their works from the Kimberley region, Western Australia and beyond. We are working closely with our Music Industry Partners to ensure that we can offer the best services, resources and development opportunities possible.

Local Indigenous musicians performed throughout Shinju Matsuri and for other Goolarri events such as Mango Jamming, The Walkabout Boys Concert and various fundraisers. In addition, we brought Perth Indigenous Hip Hop performer Bryte MC to Broome to perform live during Kimberley Girl and to deliver Hip Hop workshops to our local youth. It was exciting to have Bryte and his DJ involved in our music program and we look forward to creating more of these exchange opportunities in 2010.

Guy Ghouse continues to fill the position of Music Development Officer and is in the process of developing some exciting new (and big) initiatives for 2010. Many of these activities will directly involve our ongoing music industry partners Department of Culture and the Arts, Lotterywest, Rio Tinto Iron Ore, DEWHA, WAM and Abmusic. We are also working on a Broome to Darwin touring circuit with Music NT strengthening our partnership with the Indigenous Music Industry in the Northern Territory.

The Music Video clips of many of our local Indigenous musicians performing live at gigs throughout 2009 have now been completed and packaged by the GTV crew. Individual musicians have been given copies for their own personal promotional use whilst Goolarri has distributed clips through Goolarri You Tube, our music industry partners and NITV. A collection of the best of these clips also went into over 300 delegate bags at the recent Australasian World Music Expo held in Melbourne in November.

The Australasian World Music Expo was attended by a 4 strong group from Goolarri Media thanks to support from Australia Council. Music Development Officer, Guy Ghouse, Music Marketing and Event Coordinator, Jack Gibson, Chief Operations Officer, Kira Fong and BAMA board member (who holds the music portfolio), Arnhem Hunter travelled to Melbourne for 6 days. Not only did this group attend 4 days of valuable workshop sessions and industry meetings but they had the opportunity to network

The training department continues to develop its relationship with Broome Senior High School by working together on a number of different projects. The first of these has been the signing up of James Pearce as a school based trainee. James first came to Goolarri earlier in the year for a week of work experience, during which his enthusiasm and personality made him an instant hit with staff. By working closely with the school and Kimberley Group Training we were able to offer James a traineeship in Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media). James now attends GME every Monday to work with the TV dept, and also spends one full week per term at Goolarri. To date James has worked on a variety of projects, including shooting the opening of the Balyarr Open Learning Centre. James has also contributed to the production of the upcoming “crocodile family” advertisements, and the Kinway domestic violence shoots. Following the success of James’ traineeship, Broome Senior High School is keen to expand on the project next year and we are currently negotiating with the school regarding the sign-up of a further three school-based trainees.

A group of twenty Year 11 students from Broome Senior High School continue to attend GME every Thursday as they make their way through the Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media). Their project this term has involved linking their studies in English with a media project at Goolarri. This has required the students to closely study several written stories based on the life of Jandamarra. The students then chose a main character in the story, and in their English class wrote a monologue from that characters point of view narrating a key section of the Jandamarra story. The students then brought their written monologues to GME and were trained in audio editing, allowing the students to record an audio narration of their monologue complete with sound effects and music. This project has been hugely successful, with many of the students showing a real dedication to completing their dramatisations to an extremely high standard. The completed Jandamarra audio projects are expected to be broadcast on both Radio Goolarri and the PAKAM network.

In October the training department began to utilise the partnership forged with Macquarie University’s Open Learning and Innovation Centre that was initiated in March of this year. This partnership has allowed GME access to all of the training resources developed by the University’s staff in addition to drawing on specialist trainers from the Uni to assist in the running of GME workshops. As part of this partnership we ran a Certificate III in Media workshop for remote students in which Jola Czerwonka, a technology trainer from Macquarie University assisted in the planning and delivery of an introductory workshop in camera operation and basic editing. Each of the 14 students in the group filmed and edited a short video during the workshop. Another workshop for this group is currently being planned to commence in February of 2010 so that students can build on the skills they developed.

GME continues to support youth in the region by taking on a number of work experience students from a variety of schools. In November, Francis Shovellor, a student from Bidyadanga, joined the TV crew for a week of work experience, during which he worked hard and assisted in the production of the crocodile family advertisements that are currently in post-production. Shannon Beattie, a student from All Saints College in

Perth, also spent a week at GME undertaking work experience. During her week Shannon was exposed to a variety of job roles at GME, her work included assisting in the production of the Kinway Domestic Violence advertisements, shooting stock footage for use in the training department and radio presentation during the midday request show.

Chris Mitskinis has recently joined the GME training dept as an off-the-job trainer. Chris is a familiar face around GME as he worked here earlier in the year as an editor on Working Lives and a sound recordist at the KALACC festival. Chris will be working with internal GME trainees, PAKAM internal trainees as well remote students attending workshops at GME. Chris has also worked in the lighting department on the Circuit 2 and Bran Nue Dae, in addition to running his own media company Ceon Media where he produced promotional material for clients such as Honda and Natural Glamour.

Chris and Greg are currently working on scripting a series of short films to be produced by students in 2010 based on local supernatural stories such as the red dress woman and the cork man.

Radio Goolarri New MediaRadio Goolarri continues to provide a 24 hour diverse radio service to the local community including programs such as the current affairs program hosted by Sandy Dann on the PAKAM and NIRS networks.

Radio Goolarri continues to work in with and converge with other sectors of Goolarri, the Community and service organizations within the Kimberley on joint projects such as Live Well – Kimberley Active and the Office of Road Safety campaigns. It also runs it regular sponsorship segments with the Office of Aboriginal Health promoting healthy lifestyles.

This year we’ve added some great new programs to the mix such as the Saturday Night Goolarri Party – 5 hours of your favourite party hits from 7pm to Midnight. Sunday’s we help you wake up after a big sleep in with Easy Sunday, 2 hours of mellow hits from the 60’s to the 90’s then from 7pm we feature the Hot 25 Countdown.

Matt Francis, Thursday and Friday programs are very popular with the younger •audience, with the very best in rock and heavy metal.

Eddy Jenz, one of our long time volunteers goes into the hall of fame with his •Classical music show and Classic rock. Also Goolarri staff member, Jack Gibson brings some fast paced party tunes, to the ears of Broome.

Kelly Francis is doing a great job, on the “Lunch Time Request Show” as well as •work in our events department.

Sandy Dann, possibly the most familiar voice on Goolarri radio, continues to go •strong, delivering informative interviews that benefits our Indigenous communities and Russell Dann continues his 6-9am breakfast show across Broome, being the perfect accompaniment to a good cuppa.

Over the next few months a new volunteer will start with us to bring us the Brazilian hour on Radio Goolarri.

Our production department has made inroads into the development of local sponsorship messages for our clients and they are very happy with the productions keeping our production dollars flowing in. Corporate and government departments are still utilizing our Radio service with an increase in sponsorship.

Wednesday 30th October was the official opening and the Balyarr Centre, Telstra Foundation representatives were welcomed to Goolarri Media for the unveiling of the plaque and announcement of the 3 year funding of the Balyarr OLC to local media. The Foundation was impressed on the centre facilities and also with some of the early outcomes that the centre has achieved.

Balyarr also trialed a Digital Art Class during July-August in co operation with the Broome TAFE campus Art Class. During the 10 week course, students enrolled to do night classes every Tuesday from 6pm-8:30pm. The students ranged in ages from early 20’s to late 40’s and they used the Balyarr computers with Michael Torres teaching the class. Coral Painter is the software used to create digital painting using traditional art mediums in a digital canvas while using a WACOM tablet and pen to interact with the computer and digital canvas. Balyarr will be working with TAFE to have more classes in the future also using the trial and changes to the model to engage the younger students in schools.

Twenty year 11 students from Broome Senior High School participated in a DET funded Access program that involved completing a Certificate II in Creative Industries Media. They trialled a short video project about health messages aimed at different parts of the Broome community which was a steep learning curve for them to tackle. But more positively, they have been working on writing a monologue in class based on their reading of the Jandamarra story. Using the sound editing program “Audacity”, they recorded, trimmed and added sound effects and music to their individually spoken audio tracks to be included in a larger piece.

Future plans of starting an after school program that will work with the OLC and the physical space of the middle shed including Dance and Theatre, might be another angle to get the kids into creative expression with help from the OLC for research and other interactive ideas. In addition the program could include a youth magazine television segment for GTV broadcast and upload to the web via YouTube and Goolarri.com.

Sales and MerchandiseOur first year in the New Building has been a success with all staff finally in one “creative space”. Apart from the usual teething problems and a few staff moving around to “nest” everyone seems settled, happy & working well together.

Our old GME building has been revamped with Kimberley Land Council moving in after signing a 3 year lease.

Some staff changes this year include Isaac our IT support, leaving to take a position with Customs to patrol our coastline. Jocelyn, Cissy and Rebecca have also left Goolarri to move onto greener pastures however we welcome Taz Kaino to the organisation as our wonderful new receptionist and look forward to having her as part of the Goolarri family.

We are currently negotiating an on call maintenance contract with Best Computing. This will be much more cost effective method with access to a bigger IT pool rather than employing another IT person.

Matrix on Board has moved out of the rented donga to bigger premises. We are currently sourcing another tenant to fill the space. The Alternative Education Program that was running in Shed 3 for at risk and troubled kids was unfortunately not funded again for the year. We may have a tenant to fill this space in 2010 which could have health benefits for all – watch this space.

The Goolarri gardens and grounds continue to be improved and of course our annual pre-cyclone season clean up has started.

A Merry Christmas and a prosperous & Happy New Year to all.
