Christmas Specialties
By Sho Spaeth
Ask yourself something. What isspecial about Christmas? Well, some of usreally have to think a lot about this question. Before you really answer , let us, from theScribbler team, state a fact about Christmas:It only comes once a year!!! Aside fromthat, what makes Christmas really special?Now... don't be shallow with your answer.Get beyond the presents and the money fromyour grandparents, the great food, and thefact that its a break from school (Yayl). We(of course) love these things, but get deeper. We”ll tell you what we came up with andthen you think about it.
One thing is the Christmas spirit. There is no other time of the year whereeveryone is as nice as during Christmasseason. Face it, everyone's kind at this timeof the year. Another thing that goes alongwith the Christmas spirit is the good feelingyou get. We don't know about you, but theM.S Scribbler staff can all atest to the factthat we aquire a feeling of warmth atChristmas time.
At the risk of sounding corny, anothergood thing is that you get to look over andinto your friendships with people. Theymight grow or might fade away, but every-thing's for the best during Christmas. Alongwith friendships comes the best part, yourfamily get-togethers. They`re always fun, especially with those funky Christmas tuneswhich send that “more-than-welcome”Christmas vibe. And don't forget that relaxedfeeling which seems to bind with the music.
So you just think about my initialquestion and while you”re at it, the entire
Scribbler staff wishes you a MerryChristmas and aHappy New Year.

Hannukah
We all know that Hannukah is a holidayor annual festival for Jewish people, but do we 'really know what it”s all about? ...The real storybehind Hannukah? Well, it is celebrated foreight days, starting on the twenty fifth day ofthe third month, Kislev, on the Jewish calendarwhich corresponds to December on theGregorian, the calendar most of us are probablymore familiar with. Hannukah actually cele-brates the rededication of the Temple ofJerusalem by Judas Maccabee in 171 after thetemple had been taken over by Antiochos IVEpiphantes, the King of Syria at the time andleader of the Palestinians.
Well, after Antiochos had set up an altarto Zeus (about three years after) Judas Macabee
took Jerusalem back and put up another altar inplace of the one ruined by Antiochos, he beganto rededicate the temple to God, which was aneight day ceremony. But, according toTalmudic tradition, to rededicate the templepure olive oil was required. Only one container.sealed by a high priest could be found. so that`swhat they used. Miraculously, the small amountof oil lasted the eight long days. So. to symbol-ize those eight days, a special eight branchedcandelabrum is used. One candle lit the firstnight, two the next, and so on.
Well, to the whole middle school. fromthe M.S Scribbler, Happy Hannukah all!

Winter Sports
In order to find out about favourite winter sports, I surveyed all of the middle school students atA.E.S. The Sixth and Seventh graders liked ice staking most while the Eighth graders thinkthat skiing is the best winter sports. Some interesting winter sports, as indicated by middleschool students, were out-door swimming, going to the beach, playing beach volleyball, jetskiing and surfing. These student obviously come from, or have lived in, the SouthernHemisphere. 'Odd sports included snow golf, snow shoe racing and mud wrestling. Thanks forfilling and giving us all a gold idea of what people like to do in the winter month.

The Pirates of Penzance
By Joy Torres
Staying after school for rehearsals, really paid off. The
Pirates of Penzance was an excellent hit. The entire cast was
incredibly brilliant! Vibrant singing and superb acting made
the play a big success! The backstage crew kept the actors
bright and happy, the lighting crew made the actors shine on
the spot, and the props and costumes brought the variety of
settings to life. The ushers looked great in their pirate hats;
passing out programs and making people fell comfortable right
from the start. But...... let's not forget the directors/ teachers
that took part in the play, for if it weren't for them we would
not have had a play at all! Let alone such a great one!
AES is very lucky to have such talented kids, excellent
teachers, and supportive families! Let us all “Pour, Oh Pour the
Pirate Sherry!” till the next Middle School play! V

The Holly and the Ivy
Did you know that there are more than 150varieties of holly. Holly grows in just everycountry of the world. It has been used forcenturies for decorating purposes, especiallyat winter festivals.
In many Christmas legends, the male issymbolised by the holly and the female bythe ivy. The one that was first brought intothe house indicated which sex would rule thehouse for the year! An entertaining storyembodying this idea is told of an Englishknight who invited his tenants and theirwives to dine with him at Christmas. Theknight arose when all the guests were seatedand said to the men “ Before you eat, whoever among you is master of your wifeshall now take his stand and carol before theassembly." After some time a man arose andsang a short song. Then a command wasgiven to the women”s table: “ Ivy, it is nowyour turn. Whichever of you is the master ofher husband, let her sing a carol as proof."All of the wives joined togsether and beltedout a Christmas song. The knight laughedand agreed that the Ivy is the winner. Themaster is always the Ivy!!

The Mistletoe
The reason Mistletoe is called mistletoe is
because it came from the Latin word mistel-
ant, meaning “different twig”. It grows on_ trees as `a semi-parasite and its huge, dense
and light green.
“Give me a kiss” is the meaning in the lan-guage of flowers, because it hangs in thedoorway or under a chandelier, a boy mayclaim a kiss from the girl who happens to beunder it. After each kiss the boy is to removea berry and give it to the girl. Of course, thisalso works in vice versa mode. When all theberries are taken, no more kisses are avail-able.

Tinsel on the Tree
Do you know why our Christmas tree is deco-rated with tinsel? An old legend seeks toexplain this: many years ago a good womanwith a large family of children prepared theChristmas tree, trimming it profusely. Duringthe night spiders Visited the tree and crawledfrom branch to branch, leaving their beautifulwebs behind them. To reward the woman forher goodness, the Christ-child blessed thetree, and all the spiders webs were trans-formed into shining silver.

The Photography Exhibit
By Pehr Karlsson.
As you all know, there is a Middle Schooland a High School photography exhibit cur-rently on display in the theatre. Recently Iwent to see it. lt was really good. There weremany good pieces on a variety of differenttopics. I especially like two pictures taken byLasse Lakkonen and Mira Jain. Lassei`spicture was a view from the middle of aflower. I found it very interesting because ithad a depth to it. Mira”s picture was ofCandles. There was just something specialabout her picture. It was taken from the sideof a semi-circle and had a. spiritual feel to it.The only negative comment that I wouldmake, is the photographs had a similar feel tothem. It is obvious the the photographershave really worked hard to put this exhibittogether. So... if you haven"t had the oppor-tunity to see the exhibit, make plans to do soimmediately as it won”t be up for muchlonger.

The Santa Clause starring Jim Allen
“The Santa Clause’ is about a single father ,who through a series of events, becomes

This movieis wonderful because it explains all of thequestions about Santa and Christmas. ltexplains how Santa goes down a chimney, how he enters a house that doesn't even havea chimney, and how his sleigh can be all overthe world at one time. This is a hilariousmovie and I recommend that every one watchthis to get into the Christmas spirit.
