SHARING HOPE FROM THE HEART OF THE HIGHLANDSEvery day, I said, “How are you?” And every day, he answered, “Grateful.” He was an elderly African American man who parked cars for a living at a garage I used in Chicago. His wife had died some years before, and parking cars gave him something to do and some (very) modest income. His life had not been easy, and he didn’t have much as the world measures these things. But every day, he said, “I’m grateful.” As Reformed Chrisans, we stress the “sovereignty” of God. We mean by this that God is first and everything else is second. God is the Source of everything that is. But God is more than an explanaon of our origins. God has a specific character. First, in the story of God’s long relaonship with Israel, and then in the story of Jesus, we see that God is the One whose steadfast love endures forever, and that nothing in life or in death will ever be able to separate us from God’s love. The only thing that really maers in life – namely, God’s healing and redeeming and life-giving love – is already ours. How can we not be grateful! November is the season for giving thanks. We begin on November 1 by celebrang the saints. We give thanks to God for those who have gone before us in life and especially in faith. We remember loved ones who have died, and we call to mind those whom we may not know personally but who have laid the foundaons for our faith. The “communion of the saints” isn’t just about remembering people from the past. It is about being “in communion” with them here and now through the love of God in which all of us – living and dead – abide. November is also the season in which we express our gratude to God by means of our commitment to support God’s work through the mission and ministry of Highland. Our pledges for financial support in 2016 will ensure that we will be able to do as a church what we believe God is calling us to do. But the primary reason we give is that it is one concrete way to express our joy and thanksgiving for all we have received. Finally, November is the month of our naonal day of Thanksgiving. Even though it is now interrupted by a plethora of shopping opportunies, we sll experience this as almost an island of peace in a fast-paced world. It is a day to rest and renew and reflect and rejoice with family and friends. For Chrisans, it is a day to turn once more to the God of steadfast love and make our prayer: “For all that has been, Thanks. For all that will be, Yes.” Cynthia M. ‘SHARING HOPE FROM THE HEART OF THE HIGHLANDS’

Every day, I said, “How are you?” And every day, he answered, “Grateful.” He was an elderly African American man who parked cars for a living at a garage I used in Chicago. First, in the story of God’s long relationship with Israel, and then in the story of Jesus, we see that God is the One whose steadfast love endures forever, and that nothing in life or in death will ever be able to separate us from God’s love. The only thing that really matters in life – namely, God’s healing and redeeming and life-giving love – is already ours. How can we not be grateful! November is the season for giving thanks. We begin on November 1 by celebrating the saints. We give thanks to God for those who have gone before us in life and especially in faith. THANKSGIVING BASKETS FOR HIGHLAND COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Highland Community Ministries is one of the local organizations that Highland Presbyterian supports and one of the key ways we do that is through our annual Thanksgiving Basket food drive. Last year Highland provided prep-arations for a Thanksgiving meal and other staples to over 40 families who live right here in the Highlands.

This year we would like to provide even more support and continue to improve the nutritional content of the food we provide. Pick up your shopping list in Fellowship Hall at the Welcome Center.

Here are ways you can help: Buy everything on the list to provide a complete “basket” for a family of 4. Pick an item or two from the list and purchase enough to supply several baskets. Provide a finannaian donnanionnadhanhdia dal dunnaodhaldiat dindo. (We provide $25 Kroger cards to assist in purchasing a turkey). Make check out to Highland Presbyterian Church and please add “Thanksgiving Baskets” to the memo. Help us keep track of what has been received during the drive. HIGHLAND COMMUNITY MINISTRIES GIFT TREE – One of the ways we support our

neighbors in the holiday season is through the HCM Gift Tree. We will receive 100 gift requests this year. Look for the Gift Tree table in the Choir Room on Sunday mornings starting on November 29.

ALTERNATIVE GIFTS MARKET - The perfect holiday gift-giving

opportunity is returning to Fellowship Hall soon! Look for the Alternative Gifts table on Sundays after Thanksgiving to purchase donations in honor of your friends and loved ones as meaningful gifts that keep on giving. The pro-cess is easy: you decide to give a donation to a worthy organization in the name of the hard-to-shop-for people on your list, select the amount of the gift you'd like to give and the organization from the catalog we provide, then you get a holiday card on the spot to give to the person you're honoring to let them know of the gift. We make one-stop shopping easy and meaningful. Look for the gift market on Sunday mornings starting November 29.

REFUGEE CO-SPONSORSHIP CONTINUES -By Matt Nickel

The Antakli family has been in Louisville for two months. Highland’s co-sponsor team will support their transition for another month. Occasionally, the family wants to learn about truly American things, like the dollar store. Sometime they want to comfort of familiarity, like finding their way to the local Middle Eastern grocery store to buy bread like they knew at home. Sometimes our co-sponsorship requires meaningful introductions, like connecting them with a mosque so they can go to prayer. Before the family arrived, I read some about Syrian culture. What interested me most was about family lives and culture. What I learned sounded a lot like what I want for my family and what I think many of families desire. Syrian life is built on a strong commitment to the family. One afternoon, Terry Fontenot and I walked with the Antaklis to a community center where a free member-ship would provide them with Internet. After helping them fill out paperwork and getting connected to the internet, they were on Skype calling family. Along the way, the Antaklis have shown their priorities and values. To live their deeply held faith and the desire to raise children who love their Muslim identity. They share how they want the best for their children, especially the ability to learn to love learning, even though going to school is scary. Supporting a family to live their values is now a practice of our faith. As we serve to support their ability to live new lives with meaningful values, our church has shown its own faithfulness. A special thanks goes out to those church members who have been a community for the Antaklis as they get established. Their commitment assisted the family navigating starting school, a jump start on learning English, understanding American culture and finding resources and amenities that we use regularly in our lives like stores, parks, and transportation. The energy of these volunteers has made a meaningful difference in the lives of people displaced from their homes.

FLOWERS FOR WORSHIP—If you would like to honor a special person or occasion by donating flowers to

worship on a particular Sunday, please call the church office. Available dates in 2015 are November 8, & 29.

SANCTUARY REPAIR In August, we discovered that the main roof truss has a significant crack making it unsafe to use the sanctuary for worship. In order to design and make repairs, structural scaffolding is required to carry the roof loads while the truss is repaired. The scaffolding requires a firm base, more than the floor of the sanctuary can hold. Therefore, holes will be cut in the floor so that scaffolding can be anchored on the foundation in the basement. Thus far, the sanctuary has been dustproofed and protected. Pews and carpet were removed. The Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment in the basement was removed so that the scaffolding can reach the basement floor. Once the scaffolding has been built, holes will be cut in the ceiling plaster so that the scaffolding can reach the main truss. - by Willie Harshaw, chair of Property Committee

TEN MINUTES WITH PATRICK GROHMANN By Lee Hinson-Hasty

Patrick Grohmann, a senior at Trinity High School, is ac-tive in youth group and has been a member of Session since his ordination as a ruling elder last spring. I caught up with Patrick on his fall-break college search. Lee: Patrick, thanks for your time on your break! I’ll keep this quick… How long have you been at HPC and what keeps you here? Patrick: I was baptized Catholic but attended the Highland Presbyterian Weekday School. Around the time Doodle was installed, I joined the youth choir program. In choir, I learned about youth group. My brothers, Jack and Charlie, followed! I went through confirmation and joined HPC in 8th grade. Wow! That was four years ago! The strong sense of

community in the youth group keeps me coming back. We are all friends and support one another. It’s pretty great! Lee: Any favorite memories at Highland so far? Patrick: Probably the annual affirmations to seniors we give at Montreat. It’s powerful. I also will never forget the youth services. Writing prayers, sermons and skits and hearing other youth lead them are amazing. Lee: You’ve helped serve at the Lord's supper. Our 2015 stewardship theme is inspired by communion: "The Gifts of God for the People of God for the World." Do you see any connections between communion and steward-ship? Patrick: I do. Sharing our gifts in communion and community in the world is core to what I think we all believe. Serving others, being served, giving and receiving are central to our Christian faith. Both being good stewards and participating in communion are things done by us as people for God’s people. In each, we draw closer together as a community; we become a family. In my mind, just as all are welcome at Christ’s table, it would be wrong to leave anyone out of our family. We need to take care of each other. Lee: Do you think of stewardship as a way we can take care of God’s family? Patrick: Yes! It’s like the Gospel story of the widow who gave her last two coins. She didn’t just give out of her spare change. She gave something that mattered. It’s about the quality of the gift and less about the quantity. It’s about taking care of ourselves and others because we are family.

Lee: Any parting thoughts? Patrick: Just a “shout out” to the Youth Group! Love y’all! Lee: Thanks for sharing your time and wisdom, Patrick. This conversation makes me wonder if there is someone in the weekday school now that will be a ruling elder at HPC in 2027?

CHILDREN’S MUSIC MINISTRY What wonderful opportunities the children have had to lead worship thus far this fall! The Directors of all three choirs are truly amazing. I am so grateful to be able to come on Wednesdays and participate in the well planned musical activities each week. With the holidays quickly approaching there will be plenty more opportunities for us to show how much we have learned in choir and how we can worship each and every day through music! There is no better and easier time to fit music into our lives than through-out the Holiday season. Sometimes, however, during the holiday season we have a bit too much that we try to fit in.

I encourage you as our schedules get busier and children get more excited to try and use music to calm the inevitable meltdowns of both children AND adults. To find ways to ward off the stressors that can come during this time of year. I also encourage you to remind your children (now that we have become comfortable with each other on Wednesday evenings) to have fun in choir but make sure they are respectful of their di-rectors and the different ways their friends learn. Ask them what that might look like, what that might sound like and most importantly, what that might feel like to both their friends and themselves.

The LYRIC CHOIR will lead worship on November 8th at the 11:00 service. On Nov. 22nd Joyful Noise will lead at 11:00. There is no rehearsal on Wednesday November 25th. Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for The Family Christmas Service & pageant rehearsal Saturday December 19th from 10am-12pm and the Family Christmas Service & Pageant on December 20th at 3:00pm. In Christ, Lori Williamson

We at the Nursery and Weekday School are enjoying another year full of exploration, creativity and discovery. New friendships are forming and old ones have been renewed. Children are singing about Grey Squirrels, learning to play instruments and learning to "say yes" to a dance partner. They are digging fingers into dirt and learning to pinch, pound and poke real clay. Banana leaves are fun to measure, paint and use to make beautiful prints. There are yum-my snacks, many stories to read and plenty of time outside! We love our time together and we are thankful that our school is a part of Highland Presbyterian Church! We mentioned our new master plan for the renovations for the play park and are pleased to share that we are exploring concrete ways to make this happen. The plan is inside the front toor of the Walker-Nevin Building and we would love for you to come take a peek. You know we are serious about play in our school, but we are also serious about the education of our faculty and parents. We have invited a nationally respected educator, Deborah Curtis of Harvest Resources, to work with our faculty this year and on November 7th at 7:00 p.m. she will also present a program for parents on Early Brain Development. YOU are invited to join us. If you are interested, let us know and we will send you the specific details.

We hope that as we move toward the holidays, you'll consider supporting our school in 2 easy ways that cost you no extra money: You can register your Kroger card in the Commu-nity Rewards program at Kroger.com and we will get a portion of your grocery pur-chases. If you will kindly save your book and gift purchase for the week after Thanks-giving (Nov. 29-Dec. 5) when we will have a Carmichael's BOOK FAIR WEEK. If you do, we will get 25% of your purchases. Finally, we hope that you know that you're always welcome to pop into our school for a visit. We love to spread our joy and hope that you'll let all your friends who have children ages 3 months - 6 years that we are now conducting tours and accepting ap-plications for the next school year! We have filled our classes this year and it's some-times helpful to apply early! For questions about any of this, give us a call at 456-6991 or send a note to [email protected]

NWDS & KROGER—The HIGHLAND PRESBYTERIAN NURSERY AND WEEKDAY SCHOOL still needs your help.

If you shop at Kroger, it's not too late to sign up for Kroger Community Rewards. By taking just a couple of minutes

to enroll online at www.kroger.com/communityrewards , you can automatically help the school every time you buy

groceries -- nhdnandin.hdhndynn. Every time you swipe your Plus Card, Kroger will donate a percentage of your shop-

ping bill to the Nursery and Weekday School. All funds go entirely to the LACY-MORRIS SCHOLARSHIP FUND which

provides tuition assistance to families who need it. Your help with this program could make a tremendous differ-

ence. The more individuals who enroll, the greater our rewards. If you enrolled before August of this year, you will

need to re-designate "Highland Pres. Nursery and Weekday School" in order for your shopping dollars to continue to

help the Scholarship Fund. [The program re-boots each September 1st.; Questions--1-800-Krogers, Option #3]

THANK YOU for your help!
