By continuing to take part in sport I have learnt how to time manage and always stay organised to get everything done. 2008 Level 2 Drug Awareness Course

Skills

Academic Knowledge: My degree in Physical Geography is a good base for knowledge needed for a

position in the Environmental industry. Knowledge in both Coastal and Fluvial environments have allowed me

to learn how processes work, and how human influences can both negatively and positively affect situations.

This has also given me an understanding in the viability of projects and financial barriers such projects may

entail. Also experience in GIS means I am aware of current technological advances which have allowed for

more detailed mapping and spatial analysis. I believe this solid base understanding would put me in good stead

for a career in this industry.

Strategy, Planning, Prioritisation: During my first six months at The History Press, I undertook a work

based learning NVQ in Business and Administration whilst carrying out the duties of my full-time position as

Web & Data Assistant. With exams and work duties, I was able to improve my skills in planning and

prioritisation. When the NVQ was completed and my role in the company grew to Sales Support & Direct

Marketing Assistant, this of course came with more duties. The planning and prioritisation needed to carry out

my role increased and as such so did my skills.

Computer Literacy: Academically I have learnt how to competently use many computer programs with

excellent working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets and formulas, other Microsoft office applications, statistical

analysis programs such as Minitab Stat 15, PASW Statistics 18/SPSS, and mapping and spatial analysis programs

such as ArcGIS. In the workplace, I have honed Microsoft Office skills and learnt how to update and edit

Coastal Environments

Recreation and Tourism

websites and use content management systems and workflow tools. On a personal basis I have developed

skills in graphics programs such as Corel Draw Graphics Suite X5 and Adobe Photoshop to aid my

photography and also have a WordPress blog.

Effective Communication: Experience in retail has allowed me to improve face-to-face communications and

customer service, and my office experience has allowed me to improve communications across phone and email

also. Furthermore, when working at the Plymouth Graduation, having to numerously transition from the stressful

kitchen to the paying public in the marquee put me to test, however this experience was beneficial to my skills and

it was a great experience as it allowed me to learn to positively react in difficult conditions. Retail, hospitality and

small offices can provide stressful situations where efficient and good communication is needed and I feel my

experience has helped me to improve this.

Page 24: GGX201 CV Lecture

Leadership At school, I was a prefect and deputy science ambassador, organising different activities for the school and supervising the lower years during science activity days and competitions. The other ambassadors and myself held science clubs to encourage students to develop their scientific knowledge. I was involved with a group of students, helping to plan and deliver PSHE lessons to younger students. Sport I have competed in Triathlons and Tetrathlons at Regional Level, which involved swimming, running, pistol shooting and horse riding. More recently at university I am a keen and enthusiastic member of the hockey team, playing for the 4th team regularly. In addition to this I have volunteered for RELAYS, (Regional Educational Legacy for Arts and Youth Sport). This involved helping children with disabilities aged 10-18 play different sports at a yearly sports event in Devon and Cornwall. I also obtained my advanced SSI scuba diving qualification. Lifestyle I am a key member of Young Farmers and have reached the regional semi-finals of both the annual drama revue and public speaking, As well as competing in various competitions such as a cooking competition. I have also reared a calf and entered a woodwork class in the 2010 annual rally, both of which I came first in. Travel During the summer of 2008, I travelled to Tanzania on a World Challenge expedition. This was a great opportunity to experience another culture, cuisine and get the chance to meet new people and help other people. Whilst in Tanzania, I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, helped at a local secondary school with the building of a new toilet block and helped the students with Geography, English and Maths. During 2010, I took a gap between my studies and travelled to South-East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. This was an amazing experience that encouraged me to travel independently, manage money on a set budget and experience new cultures and places outside of my comfort zone, as well as meeting new people. SKILLS For my world challenge trip to Tanzania, I had to fund raise the majority of the cost towards the trip this encouraged me to manage my time effectively around my studies and other activities. Working with the public and organising birthday parties has helped me to work efficiently and effectively under pressure during busy days. I am very responsible and have always been trusted to carry out certain tasks as I am instructed. I am always willing to learn new skills and take on new things to further my career. In addition, I have had experience in leading a small group of people. On the expedition in Tanzania each member had to take on the responsibility of leading the team for a certain amount of time. Working cohesively as a team was also important. Travelling during my gap year also encouraged me to make important decisions and manage a budget individually. Public speaking and participating in the Young Farmers drama revue, has helped me hone my presentational skills and increase confidence with speaking in public. Furthermore, working as a volunteer has shown me the value of helping others and communication skills to ensure the children understood the rules of the games we were playing,

furthermore I had to use initiative to ensure that the children didn’t lose interest and were

motivated to always try their best.

Volunteer Work

Whilst completing my A levels, I took part in a number of group learning activities in order to broaden my abilities to communicate with those around me, my peers or elders. I have been a science leader at college, which involved me being responsible for a group of younger children taking them on field trips and helping them develop their own knowledge to further their revision.

I mix well with people of all ages and backgrounds and communicate very effectively. These abilities were important in my work as a learning mentor, working with less able younger students, where I helped them with their reading and writing and in developing their organisational skills.

This Year I have begun Volunteer work with the Natural England at East Dartmoor NP. My work involves practical nature conservation management, in particular with the protection of the Fritillary butterflies, an internationally endangered species.

Hobbies and interests

In 2010 I travelled around the world on my own, visiting several countries including The U.S.A, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, China and The Gambia. The Trials & tribulations I went through in those 6 months have enhanced the skills and knowledge I have gained through working in various sectors. I am a confident person, who loves meeting new people and enjoys a challenge. Whilst in Cambodia I had the opportunity to teach English to classes of children aged between 11 and 18, which as well as being very rewarding, gave me the challenge of creating lessons which were suitable for all levels.

I enjoy singing lessons, and have taken part in festivals, concerts and in competition. I represented the United Kingdom by singing solo at the opening ceremony of the bridge summer camp, which was televised and in front of crowd of over 1000 people.

The job requires an abundance of motivation and work ethic, attention to detail, working thoroughly and efficiently and liaising with colleagues within the company, as well as residents. For example, quality management within the company is very important; I was often involved in meetings to ensure my role within the company was working as efficiently as possible.

Skills

IT: Computer literate in a number of software packages including word, excel and PowerPoint.

The academic nature of my degree has already equipped me with a number of transferable skills that can be applied in any working environment. A geography degree requires an organised, easily motivated, disciplined approach to work.

The ability to solve problems in a logical and proficient manner whilst hitting deadlines for completion are the foundations for succeeding that are applicable to any job.

A long term career objective would see employment in the broad geography field, teaching is something that has always inspired me.

Positions of Responsibility

Assisted extracurricular activities for younger years at school- This role intertwines with future career objectives, this role required organisation of clubs (times and places), demonstrations and motivation of students.

Volunteering for children – From ages of 8-14, previously assisted on day trips for primary schools for leisure activities, as well as providing support and guidance on day trips to centres that focus on sustainable environments.

BUPA Care Home, Housekeeper- The role requires the use of logic, self motivation and concise communication within a team at all times.
