Here’s a quick look and what separates Lago Vista from the rest! I t’s the start of a new school year for Lago Vista ISD, and that also means the start of fall sports for the many boys and girls Vikings squads. It takes a significant amount of time and commitment by parent volunteers to keep these programs operating successfully, and the school district is fortunate to have so many dedicated Lago Vista families actively involved. In this edition of the Tessera on Lake Travis Newsletter, we profile Melissa Whitelaw, president of the Lago Vista Viking Booster Club: 1. How long you have lived in Lago Vista? We moved to Lago Vista in the spring of 2009. 2. Who are the members of your family? My husband is Steve Whitelaw, who also volunteers his time with the Viking Booster Club, My oldest son, Chase Whitelaw, 17, is a senior at the high school this year, and my youngest son, Reece Whitelaw, 13, is an 8th grader at the middle school this year. Reece has been a student of LVISD since kindergarten and Chase was in 4th grade when we first moved to the community. 3. What is your profession? I am a teacher in Leander ISD. 4. How long you have been involved with Lago Vista ISD in a volunteer capacity? I have been volunteering in many different ways since we moved here; in my kids’ classrooms, chaperoning field trips, helping with field days, and even providing our awesome teachers with cookies and pies during the holidays (a long time tradition that the parents of Lago Vista do during Thanksgiving and Christmas as a way to express appreciation for all their hard work). 5. How did you become involved with the Viking Booster Club? This will be my seventh year volunteering with the Viking Booster Club. I started volunteering with the booster club in a very small way, just working the concessions every now and then, going to meetings, and slowly becoming more involved. My oldest son was entering middle school, and I thought it would be a good way to understand how the Viking Booster Club worked and what they did to support our kids and community. I helped out in many small ways through the years, then served two years as vice president, and now as the president. During this time, usually from March through September, the small birds make a historic cistern in the middle of downtown their home. After spending the day feasting on insects, the swifts return in the evening to their cistern home en masse, a tornado-like sight that is fascinating to see. In recognition of this unique annual occasion, Jonestown has created Swift Fest, an event featuring live music, nature-themed vendors, good food, fun games and activities for all ages. You can even guess the number of swifts and win a prize! Join us for this year’s Swift Fest on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 4:30 – 10 p.m. at the area behind the City of Jonestown offices and Fireman’s Park.
