Dear Girl Scouts:

I recently moved here from Vermont and I’ve fallen in love with this camp. I’ve had the great pleasure of managing my first summer at Camp Kaufmann and I’m so amazed by all of our girls, leaders and staff. Camp Kaufmann offers opportunities for our girls to experience new and often challenging things. Recently our Ropes Director told me about a camper with a fear of heights, who cried tears of joy as she reached the top the climbing wall. We know that these experiences are so important, because they prepare our girls for all of the challenges that they will face in adulthood. These triumphs are the reason I work in this field.

As you read this brochure, you will notice that we offer a wide-range of activities and experiences. It’s important that you sit down with your girls and let them be part of the planning process. Encourage them to participate in something they’ve never done before, to push themselves outside of their comfort zones and to make some new friends.

We know that planning a trip to camp can be intimidating, but we are to help. We can walk you through the whole process. I’d love to save you a spot around the campfire!

Sincerely,

Katie “Pugs” GadapeeManager of Camp ProgramsDirector, Camp Kaufmann

Environmental Leadership Programs

Girl Scounts USA and SCA recently announced a two-year effort to expose more girls to the benefits of spending time in na-ture. As a first step, SCA led an all-Girl Scouts volunteer trail crew at Shenandoah National Park and among the ten-girl team was Rosie Lu.

There are a few things in life more serene than being surrounded by nature. Regardless of whether or not you enjoy the outdoors, anyone can experience moments of peace and clarity in places that are a step away from the bustling business of civilization.

Here at Shenandoah you can watch the sunrise over the vast Virginia landscape, hike through forests teeming with thou-sands of species of flora and fauna, gaze at the infinite vastness of our universe in the night sky, see a bear off of Skyline Drive, or in my experience, pee in the woods alongside deer. (True Story, it happened once when we were working on limber lost trail). The beauty of nature can find us in many ways, like the weeds that dominate the sidewalk cracks in my hometown of Queens, New York.

I expected to be immersed in nature when I first applied for this crew, but I didn’t expect I’d have the opportunity to build stairs, drains, and lifelong friendships. It’s incredible how quickly and how closely you can bond with strangers when you’re thrown into the woods to do manual labor. Our conversation went from shy and polite small talk, to a silly and energetic discussion about Evie preventing “rokes” (rocks) from flying away. Not only that, but we became a great team as we dug up dirt, smashed concrete, cooked, cleaned, ate, and lived together.

It amazed me to see how everyone lent a hand or pitched suggestions when we were collaborating on something, wheth-er it be carrying 10 foot logs or making dinner. Each girl had her own quirks and unique qualities. The crew had a diverse spectrum of personalities and backgrounds, representing seven different states, which was something that made each day a special surprise.

Ellie was the 80’s loving pun master, Katherine was the always peppy Explorer, Emma was pretty much the crew’s mom, Phoebe was super strong and always came up with the best one-liners, Evie was the resident nature expert and also ridiculously strong, Samantha was one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met and super hardworking, Daniella was great at cooking potatoes and always looked out for us, and Lexie told us funny and memorable stories about life in her small home town.

Of course our lovely crew leaders, Cat and Gabie, are not to be forgotten. They’ve somehow been able to deal with our shenanigans over the past two weeks. Without them, we wouldn’t have had the support and guidance to challenge our-selves and to be ourselves. I have learned so much over the past two weeks, from using a sledge hammer to real life bear wrestling (the proper title is bear technician, but they basically fight bears in the park).

I truly believe that the skills I’ve picked up and the experiences I’ve had on this crew have made a big impact on my life. I’ll be heading off to college next month to study mechanical engineer-ing but who knows where my career path lies. Perhaps I’ll end up being a bear technician, a law enforcement ranger, or a back-country wilderness and trails manager right here in Shenando-ah. The people who work in the National Park Service, especially the women, have shown me so many different opportunities for the future, and I can’t wait to embark on them.

As this two-week long crew comes to a close, I’ll fondly reminisce on the great memories I’ve made. From sunrise hikes and log rolling, to smashing things up and contra dancing, I’ve had a ton of fun with my Girl Scout sisters. The impact we’ve made in the park, the SCA, and the Girl Scouts, as the first all-female crew, is something that cannot be understated. It’s been incredible to be a part of something so monumental and life-changing. I’ll miss everyone so much, but I know we’ll never forget the experiences we shared and the people we met. It really doesn’t get better than this.

In addition, areas around camp will need to be made ready for all the troop camping and summer weekends ahead! Naturally there will be a campfire with s’mores, a craft with recycled/natural materials, singing songs, and a hearty group lunch. All participants will receive a fun patch!

2016-2017 Troop Camping Availability

Troop leaders may take their girls camping for a weekend to Camp Kaufmann from September-May. Troop Camping is a week-end event up to 72 hours in duration, planned and carried out by a troop at camp. The troop leaders reserve the housing and plan for meals and activities.

For any camping trip, the troop must have one certified first-aid and CPR certified adult for each group of 44 campers. Each house or unit must have its own first aid/CPR certified adult. If you plan to use the fireplace, fire ring, or seasonal unit, you need a camp certified adult (see Leader Preparation section on page 5). If you are staying in a lake house and do not plan on using a fire place or pit, then you will only need an adult who has taken the Overnight Adventures and Beyond training (see Leader Preparation section on page 5). Transportation is not provided for these weekends (see Transportation section on page 27).

Add an Outdoor ClassroomTroops can choose to enhance their experience by hiring one of our experienced counselors to run a specific activity for them. You will notice that there are different classrooms based on the season and they are offered at different rates.

If this is your first time participating in these programs, you may want to consider purchasing a compass base patch from our trad-ing post. They are available for $8.50 each. Girls will receive a free patch at the end of each outdoor classroom session. These small patches Velcro onto the large compass base patch.

Camp Kaufmann Seasonal Programs 2016-2017

Page 17: Get Outdoors 16-17 - Girl Scouts · Scout “Girls’ Choice” process. Girls cast their votes and selected the badge topics and designs, making the process girl-led from top to

These fun-filled weekends are for our Cadette and older scouts (except for The Return of Curtains Up! Which is Juniors only).

For an additional $55, girls may meet at Grand Central for a a staff-chaperoned train ride on the Metro North. If parents choose, they may drive their girls to camp or accompany them on the train ride. If you accompany your girls on the train ride, please call ahead to the cab company (Pawling Taxi 845-855-8585) for a ride to and from camp. Even if parents/guardians accompany the girls, they will not be allowed to remain at camp with them. The group is picked up at the train station and brought to camp to let the fun begin.

Friday, they will have a campfire and roast hot dogs (veggie and vegan dogs are available also) over the fire. Even if the weather does not cooperate, we have the option of using Westover or Hillcrest for the “campfire”. S’mores for dessert and an action plan is made for Saturday. These trips are as close to “girl-led” as possible. So, Friday, the girls decide what the activities for Saturday will be that fit the theme. They have a variety of choices, can be indoor or out, safely use various areas of camp, and explore camp at a time it is most serene.

The cost for these weekends is $100 per girl. The fee includes lodging, programming, food, and patches.

In addition, what is needed to help charitable organizations that work to help animals is discussed. Art projects will be projects that can be donated to shelters and animal foster facilities. The projects will go to help and feed animals that don’t have wonderful people such as yourselves in their lives. Animals in nature will also be discussed during Frog Pond and Survival Skills activities. This season will be a don’t miss for all Girl Scouts in NYC

What is a Summer Weekend Getaway?Summer Camp Weekend Getaways are for girls ages 5-17 accompanied by their mom, other significant adult female or troop leader. All girls must be registered Girl Scout members. If you haven’t registered for the year, please submit a registration form with the $15 fee when you sign up for camp. Summer Camp Weekend Getaways offer lodging, meals and a wide range of activities led by experienced staff members. Campers arrive on Friday between noon and 5:30pm and depart on Sunday at 11 am. On Friday, the pool will open at 1pm and close at 5 pm. Arrive at camp by 4 pm to enjoy a swim. Fishing, crafts and group games will also be available on Friday. Tours of Camp Kaufmann will be available for first time campers.

Who can go to a Summer Weekend Getaway? All registered Girl Scouts are welcome at a Weekend Getaway. Girls may participate in one of two ways: through “Mom and Me” experience (mothers with a daughter or daughters) or the troop experience (volunteers with girls).

How much does it cost?Everyone who registers by April 1 will get our early bird special price of $110 per person and after April 1 the cost will be $130. Our commitment to provide high standards, good value and a traditional Girl Scout Leadership Experience means that we try to provide an affordable experience to all Girl Scouts. It’s important to start budgeting for camp early and include your girls in the process. For information on financial aid and saving ideas, please visit www.girlscoutsnyc.org.

Do I get my own cabin? During Weekend Getaways you reserve beds, not cabins or houses. If your group does not completely fill a cabin or house, we will pair you up with other troops or other “mom and me” participants. Please talk to your entire group in advance. Everyone must come prepared to share space and get along. Campers will be placed in a house or cabin according to their age. Daisies and Brownie girls will be given the first opportunity for houses and log cabins. Juniors will mostly be given log cabins. Cadettes and Seniors will mostly be given wooden cabins. Please expect to share accommodations with other campers, and have the wonderful opportunity to make new friends! Please make sure you and your troop come to camp prepared to live in a cabin in the woods with no T.V. You will eat traditional camp food and try new activities with your girls. You will also share your space with your new friends and have an amazing adventure to last a lifetime. For more information on lodging, visit www.girlscoutsnyc.org/camp.

What about orientation? When you arrive at Camp Kaufmann your entire group will attend an orientation before beginning activities. Every camper young and old, new or returning, will attend. The orientation will give you valuable information about activities and safety. If you arrive before 4 pm on Friday, you will have the chance to swim after our orientation. If you arrive after 4pm your swimtime will be on Saturday. Other activities will be available on Fridays, and the Trading Post will be open then. For new campers, there will be Camp Kaufmann tours scheduled throughout the day. You will receive your complete weekend itinerary at your orientation.

Is transportation provided? Although the council does not provide transportation you still have several options to get to camp.• Drive to camp - we have plenty of parking!• Order a bus for your group. Visit www.girlscoutsnyc.org/

camp for a full list of approved vendors.• Take the train! Take the Metro North – Harlem line to the

Patterson Station. Camp is about fifteen minutes away via car. The Pawling Taxi Company can get you to camp from there. Their number is 845.877.9595.

What are my program choices? A weekend at Camp Kaufmann is packed with fun and challenging activities. Come prepared to spend most of the day outside, rain or shine. We want to offer all campers an experience that is full of fun and learning. Please look at the program choices carefully and work with your girl(s) to decide your program focus. If you are coming as a troop and all of the girls are the same age, they should decide together what they want to do and mark it on the application. If your troop is made up of girls of different ages please have one volunteer for each age group. If two different age levels decide to stay together, the older girls will do a younger girl activity. Everyone will get a swim time and free time in their program. All girls will receive a Camp Kaufmann patch.

Do I stay with my girls all of the time? Yes! Girls must be supervised at all times by accompanying adults during Summer Camp Weekend Getaways. Girl Scout Troops must have a minimum of two adults with them. Additional adults should be added in accordance with Safety-Wise guidelines. For troops attending Summer Camp Weekend Getaways, one adult accompanying the troop (who may also be the leader) must hold current certification from one of the following: American Red Cross, American Heart Association First Aid and Community CPR, or be a physician, registered nurse, licensed nurse, paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician. The certificate-holder must be at least 18 years old. A copy of the certification should be attached to the Camp Application Form.
