Cold WarThe struggle for power between the US (democracy) &
USSR (communism) that never erupted into actual war.
•1940’s until 1991
•Each side supported armed conflicts between democratic & communist nations around the world.
•Didn’t actually engage in physical war against one another
Korea: located in North Eastern Asia and shares a border with China.
Korea- Post WWII•Japan controlled Korea pre-WWII.
•Post WWII- replaced Japan with Soviets & Americans•North Korea: Soviet Union (Communist)
•South Korea: the United States (Democratic)
•Split at the 38th parallel roughly equally.
June 25, 1950 •General Chai Ung Chai’s Communist army from North Korea invaded South Korea.
•North Korea wanted to unite under Communism.
•Capital of Seoul fell to North Korea in less than a week.
•The United States and United Nations sided with South Korea.
Domino Theory
• If one nation fell to Communism, then others in the area would follow.
• US feared that if Korea became a Communist nation, then other nations would follow.

UN Police Action South Korea asked the UN for
help.
The United States along with the United Nations decided to take a stand – Can’t let Communism Spread!
With the Soviet Union boycotting the Security Council, President Truman was able to get the UN authorize the use of force to repel the invasion.
The See Saw War….• One side would
take over land and
then the other side
would get it back.
Helping North Korea
•However, they should have worried about China…. •The US did not think China would help the North Koreans, but they did.
•The US & UN forces didn’t worry about Soviet forces helping North Korea since the Soviets had lost millions in WWII.
Final 2 years of the War
• June 1951- second phase started
• Massive artillery fights on the 38th parallel took place.
• During this time US air strikes almost destroyed Pyongyang.
• Korean War was the first time jets were used in a war.
An end to war…sort of…
•An armistice (truce/cease-fire) signed on July 27, 1953
•End to open hostilities
•A buffer zone- 38th
parallel (demilitarized zone)
•A way to transfer prisoners of war
