MARY J. BLIGET

HE OTHER NIGHT I WAS TREATED TO THE ENCHANTING

AND INSPIRATIONAL WORLD PREMIERE OF MARY J. BLIGE’S “THE LONDON SESSIONS,” A SPIRITUAL DOCUMENTARY DEDICATED TO THE CREATION AND RELEASE OF HER HEARTFELT AND SOULFUL NEW ALBUM ALSO TITLED “THE LONDON SESSIONS.” THE FILM ITSELF UNLEASHED AN AVALANCHE OF EMOTIONS INCLUDING TEARS, JOY, ENCOURAGEMENT AND INSPIRATIONAL REVELATIONS ALL AT ONCE. Filmed in black and white, with an almost monochromatic hue, the essence and feeling of the bleak London weather helped depict the sense of

musical freedom that the city is known for. The various artists and collaborators on the album were revealed and interviewed. Included in the making of the record were Disclosure, Emeli Sandé, Jimmy Napes, Naughty Boy, Sam Romans and recording star Sam Smith. And then the music began: a flurry of soulful ballads complete with messages and meanings, as well as upbeat contributions, some even resembling a new styled EDM. With the song “Therapy” slated to become the new single, I watched in awe as Mary performed it with all the emotion allowed one single human being.

But it wasn’t only about the music. In an absolutely

and devastatingly sad moment,

Mary is shown visiting the dad of the late and troubled Amy Winehouse, the day after the third anniversary

of her passing. She told Mitch

Winehouse that she had wished to hug Amy

and reach out to her since her own experiences in the industry were so similar. As

Mary cried, the audience cried with her.

Despite the sad

and tender moments of the film, “The London Sessions” was clearly a story

of success and accomplishment,

which can be realized when

listening to the lyrics and melodies of the songs on the very album Mary J. Blige set out to London to record. When the film had ended, a long standing ovation

THE LONDON SESSIONS

BY EILEEN SHAPIRO

was granted by the crowd as nine-time Grammy-winning, prophetic status icon Mary J. Blige took the stage. Adorned in a white blouse and black leopard-spotted leggings, which went well with her shiny black boots, she appeared proud, relaxed and beautiful. She answered questions presented to her by Steven Hill without hesitation and quite candidly. She even answered questions from fans. Here are some excerpts from the 25-minute live interview between Steven Hill and Mary. How important was it for you at this point in your career to challenge yourself and do something new? Well, it was extremely important to me at this point in my career, because I’d been doing this for so long, and I could have continued to do R&B. I could have just gave everyone another R&B album, but I didn’t want that. I wanted to do something different. I felt like everything was stuck. I just felt, as an artist, not happy with continuing on, just continuing to do R&B at this point in my career. I felt like I needed to step out and give my fans something different. I wanted to celebrate the music the way they used to celebrate it. So what was it about the London sound that attracted you? It was life. The London scene has always been so refreshing and diverse, and they appreciate soul so much more than we do. Why was it so important to you to see Mitch Winehouse? It was important for me to visit Amy’s dad because, for one, we had to embrace the culture of London, and Amy Winehouse is London, and I’ve been a huge fan of hers from the first album back to the last. I’ve been connected to her because of her struggle and her trials and because of my struggles and my trials. When I was coming out of my trials during the “No Drama” album, she was coming in the music business with all her stuff. I could see living and going through hell. I wanted to get to her. I just wanted to get to her and tell her she could choose life. I’m gonna venture that everyone in this room was fortunate enough to hear you embodied and just wowed the room with “Therapy” on the American Music Awards. What are the other songs that can’t wait to take on the road? I can’t wait to sing “Doubt” live. It’s such an uplifting song, and it means so much to me and to everyone. At that, the crowd roared with admiration, nonstop, as you will too after hearing “The London Sessions.”

“ANYBODY WANNA BUY A HEART” IS THE POWERFUL TITLE OF THE “DARING”

AND VIVACIOUS K. MICHELLE’S NEWLY RELEASED MASTERPIECE. THIS EMOTIONALLY CONVINCING AND SEXY ALBUM REFLECTS HER TAKE ON HER OWN LIFE’S EXPERIENCES AND DEBUTED AT #1 ON THE ITUNES R&B/SOUL ALBUM CHART, #2 ON BILLBOARD’S R&B/HIP HOP CHART AND #6 ON BILLBOARD’S TOP 200 AND TOP FEMALE R&B DEBUT OF 2014. THIS GIFTED SINGER, SONGWRITER, TV PERSONALITY AND ACCOMPLISHED PIANIST IS CONQUERING THE UNIVERSE WITH HER ONE-OF-A-KIND, ALLURING PERSONALITY AND CREATIVITY. AND BOY CAN SHE SING! In 2013 she was named Soul Train’s Best New Artist and

awarded NAACP Image Awards’ Outstanding New Artist Award. Followed by millions, K. Michelle has just come off of her first extremely successful season of VH1’s “My Life.” Known for her honesty as well as her “booty,” K. Michelle is an explosive and electrifying performer. In between her immensely crazy schedule I was fortunate to be able to have a conversation with her. She was lively, fun and very candid. How are you? I actually have a little down time before my show tonight, so I’m good. Girl, you can really sing! Thank you. The album title is just brilliant: “Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart.” Whose idea was that? Actually I have a friend

BY EILEEN SHAPIRO

‘ANYBODY WANNA BUY A HEART’

that’s a rapper, and he did this record and played it for me. I mean, we were in the studio together, and I fell in love with the song—more so the title. He ended up not using the song on his album, and we’re on the same record label. The record label gave me the record. I ended up not using the actual record, but I kept that title, because it was so brilliant to me, and it stood for a lot of things. I feel like a lot of times now in life people try to buy love, and then on top of that we get so frustrated with love we’re like, “Here, take this heart. I don’t want this old thing. You wanna buy it?” I feel like the songs on your album tell a very emotional story...your story. I watched the video for “Maybe I Should Call” and it brought tears to my eyes. It is. That’s what I think is hitting home to so many people, you know, because that’s a situation I was going through, and it doesn’t help that I was going through it with a very famous, gorgeous man that people love. Instead of moping

about that situation I kind of just threw myself into the music, and every emotion that I went through I sang about.

I could see that in the video.

Yes. It’s kind of hurtful, but… It was so sad. What inspired “Love Em All”? Everybody is so quick to judge women when they date, and I see the comments, and I hear the things: “Oh, she can’t keep a man...blah, blah, blah, whatever.” It’s not the lack of men; it’s the quality of the man, and I know what I want. So if one relationship doesn’t work out, I don’t hold on to it so that the media and people can feel like I’m stuck in a relationship. So I kind of said, I love ‘em all. And you just move on. Yeah. How about “Going Under”? What was your inspiration for that? Oh, “Going Under”—now that was something, you know. There still was heartbreak, which people

seem to look over, because the beat is so cool. I was feeling like, “This is bad. This love thing is real bad.” That’s where that came from for me. Even the words are so strong. I think people dance so much on this record they don’t pay attention to the lyrics, but it feels like my heart is giving out. After listening to the album, I just wanna hug you. Who inspires you musically? I like to listen to all these people I’ve never heard of in my life. I’ve always loved country music. That’s been a big thing for me. I love the storytelling and the writing of it. I have an ultimate thing for it. Even when I was young, that’s the first thing. I learned to yodel before anything. The first tape I ever got was The Judds, so I’m into the things that people wouldn’t expect from me to listen to. That’s how I think you remain open to music. It’s everything, so I’ll listen to everything, and if it catches me, it catches me. You have a huge gay following. Did you ever consider doing Fire Island? No, but I am open to it. The fan base that I have gathered I think is people that are misunderstood. I try to be non-judgmental when it comes to people. Just this year I got in a big argument with Perez Hilton. He just recently came around and talked about how great my music is, but he tried to say “she is gay bashing,” and people just tore him up! Good. People were like, “Don’t try that with her, not that one, because she is a big supporter of the community.” And I’m active in it. I wanna get more into that because I have not. I mean, when I’m invited to events I’m there, but I don’t think I put myself into it like I need to. I have so many friends that are part of the gay and lesbian community.

So when you aren’t working what do you do for fun? Nothing! Nothing! I think people think I turn up all day. Not the case. So I heard that you like to be naked a lot. Let’s say you are in a store window naked, holding up a sign. What does the sign say? Anyone wanna buy a heart? You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color are you? I would be a little bit of pink and a mix of red, because I could be fire hot. You have a reputation for being super honest. How honest are you? Too honest. It gets me in a lot of trouble. Now I’m just trying to mind my own business a little bit.

Is there anything that you wish to promote? I just wanna talk about my album. It reaches a whole lot of different people, and we all are human no matter what differences we have. We all bleed the same blood and want

the same love, and this album shows that. What is the one thing you’d want your fans to know? That I am just as crazy as they think I am. Where are you going to be in 10 years? Oh, God. I’m about to sign my first artist to Atlantic, got a movie rollin’, paperwork is in to do a sitcom...just being a business woman. As much as I love music, the stress of it has taken the fun out of it for me, with all the media dancing and hate. So there is a part of me that thinks I want to make my money somewhere else and keep my music to myself. I don’t want my music to be my main source of income, because then it becomes pressure. I would much rather make my money in other fields, and anytime I wanna put out an album, I just do it, because I love music.

On Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at 8 p.m. the 16th Annual GLAM AWARDS will take

place at BPM (516 W 42nd Street in NYC). The year’s brightest stars of gay nightlife will be present and honored. Hosting this year’s festivities are the fabulous Bianca Del Rio and the enchanting Michael Musto. For those two reasons alone one should attend, plus, of course, being surrounded by the best of the best! With lavish entertainment and music, this promises to be a night to remember. The brains behind it all, Miss Cherry Jubilee, was amazing enough to answer some questions about the awards—as well as some personal stuff too. Please explain to those who aren’t exactly sure just what

the GLAM AWARDS are. The GLAM AWARDS honors the best of gay NYC nightlife. There are about 20 categories like Best DJ, Best Party Promoter, Best Dressed and Entertainer of the Year. All of NYC nightlife’s most talented and glamorous come together to celebrate the community’s accomplishments and see an amazing show! How are the winners nominated, and how are the winners determined? The GLAM AWARDS is the only NYC nightlife awards show that is nominated by and voted on exclusively by the people that work in the NYC nightlife industry. It’s similar to the Emmys, Tonys or Grammys where the particular industries are voted on by their peers. I noticed on the website that

there are

people’s choice awards. Can anyone vote? Yes! There have been many people who have felt left out because they don’t work in the NYC nightlife world but still wanted to be part and show their support. So a couple of years ago I created two categories open to the general public to vote on, Best Video by a Nightlife Performer and Scene Queen! So how did you get involved, and how many years have you hosted the awards? I came up with the idea over 16 years ago and have been producing it every year since. We started at the tiny Barracuda bar/lounge and packed it with the most amazingly star-studded crowd, and it’s grown bigger and more fabulous year after

BY EILEEN SHAPIRO

CHERRY JUBILEE & THE 16TH GLAM AWARDS

year. I really didn’t anticipate it to become the huge success it is. But I am so proud! How long have you been

involved in the gay nightlife scene?

About two decades now. I began when I was six. What do you do

when you’re not working? I’ve started writing a book about the

insanity, grit and glitter of

NYC nightlife. I have a lot

of very unique experiences after 20 years. I love to

travel. I’m going to travel more in the new year. I definitely need a vacation. Which queens are most inspiring to you? The legends that inspired me early on are the

insanely talented and slightly twisted Lady Bunny, Jackie Beat, Sherry Vine, Raven O and Joey Arias, among others. And they still inspire me, because they

are still out there kicking ass. Right

now the ladies that have come up recently and inspire me are people like Bob

the Drag Queen and Kizha Carr.

And then there is that one that won

“Drag Race” this past year. She’s not bad. How did you get your name? Cherry Jubilee was born at Wigstock, the fabulous and legendary outdoor festival Lady Bunny produced many moons ago. It was the first time I did drag. I had what has become the trademark red wig and a little white dress with cherries on it. My friend said I need a name and suggested Cherry Jubilee. That was it! What is the most exciting part of hosting these awards? The most exciting part is the actual show itself. It takes moths of preparation. It’s a lot of work. But when I see

that room fill up with those amazing people on the evening of the show and that energy fills the room, I get chills. A thrill races through my body. There really is such a magical feeling in that room. Everybody looks their best and gives their best performance wise. Thrilling!

Does one have to purchase advance tickets? Just pick up tickets at the door. GLAM AWARDS Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015 8 p.m. BPM 516 West 42nd Street, NYC glamawards.net

Besides portraying Richie Donado, a barber who is romantically involved with Patrick (Jonathan

Groff), he is also a successful playwright, producer and musician. While having a conversation with Raúl, I discovered that he was an extremely positive, profound and penetrating personality. He spoke candidly about his role as a gay character and how comfortable he felt doing so. He gave much credit to his fellow castmates as well. He possessed a kindness about him as well as an intriguing sense of humor, and I found myself fortunate to have been able to interview him. How does it feel to be playing a gay man inside a straight man’s body? It feels normal and natural. It’s new. It’s different. You know, guys have a little bit more facial hair than I’m used to when you’re kissing, but other than that it’s all pretty familiar. It’s about emotionally connecting. I feel lucky that I have a great scene partner in Jonathan Groff, a really giving and thoughtful castmate in him, and we have great material together. Also, in the second season I have some really great scenes with new and established actors. It’s different, but it’s not all that different. Did you feel that you had to prepare or familiarize yourself with the gay lifestyle for this

role? No, not really. I’m not all that unfamiliar with the gay community and the gay lifestyle. Also, we were advised to watch the film “Weekend” when we were auditioning. “Weekend” was written by and directed by Andrew Haigh, who is our executive producer, show runner and director, and I think does a beautiful job of depicting this moment in these two men’s lives when they meet each other in the course of this weekend and find some intimacy. The two actors in “Weekend” do a great job of playing these guys without playing any kind of stereotype or any kind of trope. Once I saw “Weekend” I felt like I didn’t need to play any kind of idea, or I didn’t have to take on any affection, I could just bring myself to the role. How would I be if I were a gay man? How would I be if I were myself in these moments of intimacy with another man? It was just, be truthful to the moment. How do you compare the difficulty level with some of your other roles? What’s really lovely about bringing Richie to life and being a recurring character in a series was the wonderful nature of television—you get to track these characters over the course of an entire season, as opposed to films—they really feel like short stories, whereas television feels like a novel. You really delve into the

character, to their emotional life in a really fun way that sometimes in film you only get a glimpse of the character. In “Looking” we really can track a character like Richie. He’s a lot of fun, I appreciate how honest he is, how principled he is, and how he stands his ground with Patrick. Those are all the aspects of him to kind of delve into, and I have a lot of fun working with Jonathan. He is who I had a lot of material with in the first season as well as the second season. We have a great cast, and I love our cast and crew. We have a really great kind of family. It’s a real joy to come to work every day. In that way, it’s a real blessing. It’s a great working environment for an actor, for anyone. I think now with the second season introducing new characters, having new actors come into the family and getting to hear how they respond positively to the kind of environment that we set up, that we established in the first season, is really encouraging. It really is a great group. I feel really lucky to be part of the show. I don’t suppose that you have any secrets that you want to give away about the second season? I will say that we get to know a little bit more about Richie and his background and kind of what makes him tick and how he came to be. When is the new season going

RAÚL CASTILLOS

to air? January 11, 10 p.m. Raúl, you are also a playwright, correct? That’s right. What plays have you written? I had a play in 2009 called “Knives and Other Sharp Objects.” I have a production coming up in 2015, in April or May, in Chicago called “Between You, Me and the Lamp Shade.” Chicago is a great town. I love the theater that goes on there. It’s my first time working there as a playwright. I’m excited. You’re also going to be in a project called “Sweets”? That’s right. Tell me a little bit about that. That was actually produced by a good friend of mine named Ed Vassallo, who passed away earlier this year. He had cancer, and we lost him way too early. He was an actor. He was actually in my play “Knives and Other Sharp Objects.” I’ve known him for years; he brought me to this project. It’s a great group of New York actors—Pedro Pascal, who’s also in “Sweets.” It’s a great group of people, so I’m excited to see what they do with the film. I have another film called “Staring at the Sun” that I just shot in August that should be making the rounds as well. I’m excited about that project. I have some non-industry questions for you, so that our readers can get to know you a little better. That would be fantastic, Eileen. If you could pick two celebrities to be your parents, who would you chose? He’s not around anymore, but Anthony Quinn. He always felt like he’d be part of my family, and Diane Keaton always felt like she’d be a good mother figure. Those are good choices. If you could take someone on a date into outer space, who would that be? I’d pick my girlfriend. Yeah, that’s always a good choice. She might not appreciate it if I took someone else. What’s your favorite quality about yourself? That’s a tough one, Eileen. Oh,

Jesus. I think that I’ve always been drawn to the type of work that I’ve been drawn to. It’s no wonder that I wound up on a show like “Looking” on a channel like HBO. It’s the kind of material that I like. Early on when I was a kid I was drawn to punk rock music. It was the pop music of the time. I’ve always been more of a black sheep, and I think that’s the quality actually that I appreciate about myself. That’s a really great answer. Now, somebody just wrote the story of your life. What is it titled? The title of my play “Knives and Other Sharp Objects” is pretty right on. What do you do for fun when you aren’t working? I work a lot with my theater company Labyrinth in New York City. Those are my friends and family. I get to do a lot of great stuff – theater related – having the kind of family I have in New York. I like to go home to Texas to visit my family. I have two nieces whom I love dearly, my brother and my sister, my mom – like to go visit them. I like to go see theater in New York. I like to get out to the beach when I can. I love the beach. I like playing music. I’m a musician. I’ve been playing music since I was a kid. What instrument do you play? Bass guitar. My girlfriend bought me a ukulele this year. I like playing the ukulele. I wish I had a band, but that’s something you have to dedicate a lot of time to, and I just haven’t met the right group of people. But even by myself, I like playing my bass at home, spending time at home. I like cooking. I like food. I’m a big food eater. New York’s a great city for that type of thing. How is your life different than you imagined it might be when you were a kid? When I was growing up, I never…I mean, my parents were from a very small town in

Northern Mexico, and I grew up in a very small town in South Texas, not terribly far from where they grew up, and I never imagined I’d be living in New York City, working on a TV show as an actor. I just saw a friend of mine last night who plays in a band. He just came back from touring in India. He plays in a great band, my friend Roy Mitchell. It was just so wild after all these years. I’m on an HBO show and he’s touring the world. I never thought I’d be here. Let’s just say you’re in New York and you walk into a gay bar. Are you recognized right away? Yeah, yeah, absolutely. It doesn’t have to even be in a gay bar. I saw this a lot in San Francisco when we were in season two, that we got a lot of love, both in the gay community and outside the gay community. We got a lot of love for the show. I think people really appreciate what we’re doing. It’s really inspiring when running into fans both in and out of the club.

Now I have some

questions for Richie. If you

were a porn star, what would your name be? Rico Suave. Love that name. You’re a

new addition to a

crayon box. What color are

you? Maroon.

Is that your favorite color?

No, it’s not my favorite color. It’s Richie’s favorite color. You can become Raúl again. Is there anything you would like to promote or say? I have a great scene partner this season, an actor by the name of Chris Perfetti, who I get to do a lot of my work with this season, and he’s a kind of exciting new addition to our cast. We have a lot of great additions to the cast. And Richie, I guess, will spend a lot of time with an actor by the name of Chris Perfetti, so I definitely wanna give a shout out to him. He plays a great character by the name of Brady.
