A one-day course for multi-union members of creative works who want a basic understanding of copyright, its usage and application in their respective field.

All writers, artists, songwriters, composers, playwrights, screenwriters, journalists, choreographers, photographers, publishers, agents, broadcasters and podcasters working in their various field of communication, media, arts, entertainment and music.

No formal qualifications are required but all those taking part should have some experience in producing the required creative work in their field whether published or unpublished.

• An understanding of the basic concept of copyright in everyday usage • An understanding of the scope of copyright in the world of creative works• Ability to apply the practical processes of copyright usage when creating solo, collaborating, or contracting in your given field of creative works.

• What the Copyright Design and Patents Acts 1988 is and how it applies to creative works in the UK and elsewhere with legislation conventions, treaties and international agreements

• The scope of copyright coverage in creative works, including permitted uses of copyright, moral rights, enforcements of rights, protection and services, works for hire, infringements, plagiarism, confidentiality, breakouts and disclosures

• How copyright as Intellectual Property generates income streams: advances, fees, royalties as residual income, equity, estates, legacies and protection for copyright in trusts

• The role of copyright organisations in the collection and distribution of royalty sources• First British Serial Rights, one use only, and other ways of allocating the use of your work by

media, territory and time• The current issues and challenges ahead for the future of copyright in digital media• Copyright in the ‘public domain’.

Talent in your chosen field is not enough to guarantee freelance success in the long-term. In addition, freelances need to take a number of important considerations into account, from marketing their work to negotiating the best payment deals, to ensure work continuity and create opportunities.

Freelance Survival Guideessentials for freelance success

The course will provide a useful overview to both those who are new to freelancing and those established freelances who want to ensure that they are covering all bases to maximim effect.

A desire to maintain or improve freelance productivity. No formal qualifications are required.

• An understanding of what freelances need to do to survive• Acquisition of a level of awareness of the components that go into successful freelancing.

This one-day course covers the essential aspects that will help freelances establish a successful career path including:• establishing work continuity• building successful networks• identifying possible clients and pitching ideas to them• agreeing contract terms• negotiating deals at the right rates• making sure clients pay• planning, organisation and time-management• finding out about finance and tax• adapting/updating skills in line with trends/changing skills demand• self-motivation.

Anyone who wants to take a decisive step towards understanding and integrating Social Network-ing and Social Media into the way they do business and network via the web effectively.

No formal qualifications are necessary. However, participants will need basic computer skills and a text enabled mobile phone. Participants are encouraged to bring their own wi-fi enabled laptops; a 160 character biog; a 160 word biog, a PDF with 3 pages or more; and a square photo or graphic. More details will be given on booking.

An awareness of:• social media and networking in the context of freelances • ‘folksonomic filtering’ and tag searching using Flickr, Twitter and Delicious• how to be more productive on the move• the pulling and pushing of information using RSS, its usefulness and application Ability to: • develop a social media presence; update and network using Twitter and Linkedin • integrate dynamic content in to a network• create a social network and be part of an on-going FEU support network.

cOntent

Practical elements throughout the day will enable participants to begin networking online, embed dynamic content and personal updates directly to their own web sites or blogs in the classroom providing real experience of the skills needed to do it. This course is aimed at media and entertainment creatives who will be introduced to a variety of free online tools, community platforms and collaborative services through hands-on sessions.

This one day workshop looks at the phenomenon called Web 2.0 as a “Super User” not a developer or IT expert. The workshop looks at optimising web browsing, getting the most out of RSS, the potential and expectations of mobile web access, applications on the move, and the usefulness of Social Networking.

Any creative who wants to build a website that they can control and amend themselves. This course would suit writers, artists, photographers, actors, musicians and technicians wanting to showcase their work and provide information about themselves. It would also be valuable for community and campaigning groups needing websites, hobbyists wanting to document their activities and other small businesses.

No formal qualifications are necessary, but you must be computer literate and competent.

Ability to:• register a domain name and relevant email address• develop your own website from an existing template• create and edit pages• upload media including still and moving images• expand the functions on your website using ‘widgets’• link your Facebook and Twitter feeds to your website.

cOntent

You will be expected to bring with you a wireless-ready (enabled) laptop with words, images and other content on it.

You will need to register your own domain name and buy web space in advance - all of which can be purchased for less than £50. We will send you instructions in advance, but these must be completed at least 48 hours before the course begins. We will not be able to wait for anyone who has not done this before the course starts. Please note: we cannot provide technical support if your laptop breaks down during the course.

A one-day course that will help you build your own website using free Wordpress software. You will choose a template that you can modify and will learn how to upload media and add extra function-ality using ‘widgets’. You will be able to further develop, change and update your website later.
