BliFor most of the latter part of the

20th century, Berlin has stood as

a symbol of the division between

East and West, split by the

    infamous fortied wall erected to

    separate the socialist sector from

    the democratic district.

When the Berlin Wall was pulled

down in 1990 the city discovered

that it suddenly had two of

    everything, most notably two very

    distinct societies separated both

socially and economically. The pastdecade has seen Berlin embracing

    unication and rebuilding itself as

    a modern European capital.

The remains of the infamous BerlinWall have now become the largest

open-air art gallery in the world.

The longest section of the wall,

    which has been preserved, stretches

    from Ostbahnhof Station to the

    Oberbaumbrucke, and has been

given over to grafti artists. A total

of 118 artists from 21 countries

have exerted their skills on the

    4,318 foot (1,316m) long section

of the wall, and this collection has

become a Berlin landmark and a

tourist attraction. Some of the best

    known paintings are Dimitri Vrubels

    Brotherly Kiss and Gunther Shaefers

Fatherland. The gallery is billed as an

    international memorial for freedom

and the art reects the idealism and

excitement of 1989 and 1990 when

    the wall was pulled down.

Bd-Bd CsioWith a history dating back over

250 years and fashioned on the

lines of French royal palaces, the

Baden-Baden Casino is a temple to

the game of chance. At one time,

real silver and gold chips were used

in the gaming. The games available

    are casino favourites e.g. roulette,

    blackjack, baccarat and poker.

    The Baden-Baden is the oldest

    casino in Germany. The Madame

    Pompadour Room at the casino

is even named after the mistress

of Louis XV. In 1872, the German

government ordered the closing of allGerman casinos. It would be another

61 years, in 1933, that it would be

reopened. It was open until 1944

and then closed again until 1950.

    charming story The Little Prince?

their hotel. Each one of the 40charming rooms and suites has its

    own individual note, character and

atmosphere as well as all modern

    conveniences you would expect.

Germany's famed holiday-resort town of Baden-Baden, in the heart of the

Black Forest, still draws thousands of tourists who come each year to relax in

the waters. Baden-Baden is home to several art museums, a concert hall, and

built in the 1850s in the style of the Palace of Versailles, and is worth-seeing

    striking than Dresdens with its

    delicate spires, towering towers

    and domes belonging to palaces,

    churches and stately buildings.

    Florence of the north, the

Saxon capital was called in the

18th century, a central hub ofartistic activity presided over by

    the Augustus the Strong (August

der Starke) and his son Augustus

    III. Their vision produced many

    of Dresdens iconic buildings,

    including the Zwinger, the

    Frauenkirche and the Hofkirche.

That any of these building are

still standing is a miracle. On the

night of 13 February 1945, in the

waning days of WWII, an Allied

    rebombing campaign reduced

the baroque city to a heap of

rubble. Somewhere between25,000 and 100,000 civilians were

killed as a direct result of these

    attacks. The surviving citys spirit

    of determination is captured in

    the rebuilt Frauenkirche. The city

    celebrated its 800th anniversary in

2006 and continues to evolve with

    great new architecture, an arts
