“The hot dogs are veryspecial, made fresh with spring-lamb, pork and beef. Nestled ina warm steamed bun, anddressed with raw white onions, crispy fried onions, ketchup, sweet brown mustard, andremoulade. Outrageously deli-cious.

“Lining up in longqueues at Iceland’s famous hot

dog stand, Baejarins BeztuPylsur, which translates as ‘BestHot Dogs in Town’, Icelandersare politely patient as the wait isoften interminable. Iceland’shot dogs are rated the best inthe world.

“Apotek is the luxuryrestaurant … the name a dimiu-tive of Iceland’s apothecary, which dates back to the 1930s.

“Drinks are adventure-some. Bartenders call them-

selves ‘pharmacists’. The arti-san cocktails are nicknamed forthe pharmacy’s past: Painkillers,Stimulants, Tranquillizers andPlacebos.

“Oddly ice cubes inIceland are imported fromabroad. For whatever reasonthey are expensive to make. Noexplanation as to why.

“Icelanders are fullyaware of this, and embarrassed. No matter, ice cubes made

from the purest water are plen-tiful.

“Something irresistibleabout the country. By the endof our stay, I fell in love withIceland. The people. The ter-rain, and the hotdogs, ofcourse.

“I will go back and freezemy buns off."
