You’ve learned a lot about these two natural resources. Do you ever wonder how coal gets out of the soil and turned into electricity or how that gold in the soil turns into a shiny coin? It takes huge machines! Gold and coal are mined out of Earth’s soil using excavators and trucks. GEOLOGY EXPLORATION © NEWPORT NEWS PUBLIC SCHOOLS Topsoil comes from the subsoil and bedrock. This is the top layer of soil and is the best soil for plants to grow. Subsoil is the layer of soil under the topsoil. The subsoil may also contain sand, silt, and clay, just like the topsoil. Bedrock is made of pieces of rock that form a solid layer. All the topsoil and subsoil that needs to be removed to reach a natural resource is called overburden. Coal has many important uses. Coal is most commonly used to make electricity. Many people use coal to heat their homes. Coal is also used to produce steel and cement. Gold is a precious metal, which means it is rare and comes from nature. Gold has many everyday uses that may surprise you! Gold is used to make jewelry and coins. Gold is found inside some computers and on spaceships. OVERBURDEN Earth has three layers of soil: topsoil, subsoil, and bedrock. You will find natural resources, which are materials that come from nature, forming deep in these layers. COAL Coal is often found in layers. Each layer is called a coal seam. Topsoil comes from the subsoiland bedrock. This is the top layer

of soil and is the best soil forplants to grow.

Subsoil is the layer of soil under the topsoil. The subsoil may also contain sand, silt, and clay, just

like the topsoil.

Bedrock is made of pieces of rock that form a solid layer.

All the topsoil and subsoil that needs to be removed to reach anatural resource is called overburden.

OVERBURDEN

Earth has three layers of soil: topsoil, subsoil, and bedrock. You will find natural resources, which are materials that come from nature, forming deep in these layers.

COALCoal is often found in layers.

Each layer is called a coal seam.

How Do We Use Natural Resources?

GOLDGold is found directly above the bedrock.
