Objective of Geohazard initiative
•Formal Requirement:task DI-09-01 (Supersites) towards GEO for the new 2009-11 GEO workplan:
… is to respond to the scientific and operational geospatial information needs for the prediction and monitoring of geological hazards, namely earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and land instability.
•Informal Requirement:Geohazard community: stated in workshops, Cat1 reports, …
GEO Geohazards members are: http://www.igosgeohazards.org/

What is a “Super Site”?
stimulating access to data regionally to “Geohazards Natural Laboratory” :
…. facilitating access to data over a certain number of regional areas. In order to be eligible as a “Supersite” a regional area should meet at least one of the following criteria:
• populations and elements are exposed to geological threats
• an event is expected to occur in the near future, or a slow process is already ongoing
• it should be an appropriate place to stimulate basic geohazard research (earthquakes hazards, landslides, volcanoes, hydro-geological processes) and relative sea level rise

ESA SAR • Specific archive (SARL0 or/and SLC)• Fixed data set• Data regularly added after acquisition
• Standing order to feed specific archive • No NRT
• Hosted by ESA • Fixed sites e.g. Izmit, Etna
• Data cost of reproduction – paid once
• Searchable catalogue
other SARSpecific archive
In-situ data (e.g. GPS)
• EOLI- SA catalogues & download• No tasking
• Project selection (Cat1)• Registration• Compile results• Make recommendations for new data set

Currently available ESA “Super Sites” SAR data
Super Sites (ESA SAR scenes available) Hawaii (250) Etna (250) Vesuvius (400) Los Angeles (100) North Anatolian fault (20 Istanbul plus east of Istanbul) Tokyo
Natural Geohazard Laboratory (potential future Super Sites)• Iceland (earthquakes and volcanoes)• Sakurajima, Miyake-Jima• East-African rift earthquakes and volcanoes• Yellowstone• Piton de la Fournaise (Reunion)• San Francisco
ESA “Super Site” Archive has mainly been established with ESA SAR data being provided by users
UNAVCO has provided technical support
1 mission across 3 satellites
Combination of:
• EOLI
• Quicklooks at ESA catalogue
• Virtual Archive; SAR products stored Close to the user (Europe, North America, Asia)
Geohazard “Super Site” Trial
Example of Cloud ComputingTrial starts now (once
Cat1 has been issued) and lasts until April
2009
Virtual Product ArchiveDownload performance
• 12.20 PM started download of several products in parallel
• 12.23 / 24 PM download finished after 4 minutes (ESRIN office)
Review => to make service operational
End of this year an ESA review on this service will take place
Evaluation of service with following criteria:
– user satisfaction– cost– GS compatibility– .....
Summary
• “Super Site” ESA SAR data are via GeoHazard Cat1 project easily and fast downloadable using EOLI.
• The “Super User” Archive has very well been initialized based on users have contribution. ESA has provided the infrastructure and is the data distributor.
• Trial starts now and ends April 2009 feedback and recommendations are important to evaluate and tune the “Super Site” service.
