Horror Title Sequences

Page 2: Genre conventions

Genre Opening AnalysisThis title sequence from Insidious shows off a chilling beginning. The colours in it include Black and White. This is because to show off to the viewer that this is a horror film. The colour of the text in this title sequence is red. This is because that red is the colour of blood, and one may assume danger when the colour red is related. The background shows misty/ eerie images. This is significant to the title sequence because these eerie areas that the title sequence is showing are going to be important areas in the film, this is also to give the audience a certain ‘chill’ related to the area that it is showing in the title sequence, so when they see it in the film they shall feel more ‘chilled’ by the area. The area of the screen around the image shows off a black almost abyss around the main aspect of the title sequences. This is continuing to add to the effect of being eerie in this title sequence, as the surrounding black area contrasts with the blood red of the font to emphasise the horror and the dread in this title sequence.

How will I implement these features into my film beginning?

I will firstly add a lot of grey to my film opening, this is because of the lack of colour in my film can emphasis the horror genre that my film is a part of. Also I will make my actors wear colours that may connotate feelings such as fear and allow my film to have an undertone of danger, due to the complex colours. This shall make my viewer feel scared due to the colours that I am including in my costumes. Another thing I will do that I have researched is the blackness that other horror film title sequences have. This is to create a sense of the unknown in my viewers mind as the dark in my film would add to the mystery that I will try and create. The final thing that I will add to my film that I have learnt through the title sequences is highlighting key features of my film with my title sequences. This is because of that my film beginning will need to show the key areas in which my film will essentially revolve around, adding to the suspense in my short film. This is good for my horror genre film because of this will add to the genre aspect of my film by allowing the viewer to recognise and see the key places that they remember. Also adding towards the dynamic story of my fiilm.
