Is there a parcular one you feel drawn to? Is there one you want to know more about? Or, is there something on your heart you’d like us to consider adding to our ministries? The Words of St. Thomas July 2019

At St. Thomas we create community that respects the dignity of all.

Words from our Rector

During preparations for a recent funeral, Bishop White, Father Matt, and I were standing in a parish administra-tor’s office. The rector of this particular parish is current-ly on sabbatical. I thanked Judy, the parish administrator, for working so hard with me and making certain every-thing was prepared for the funeral. Another person said, “Oh we can get by without Fr._____ but if Judy took 3 months off we’d be sunk.” We all laughed, but it’s the truth. And frankly it’s a truth priests need to be remind-ed of. The priest is not the church. All of us together make up the church; all of us together make up the body of Christ. Each of us, by virtue of our baptism, is called to live into the ministries God calls us to. Some of those ministries are in our own personal lives and vocations. We also have ministries as the community of St. Thomas. In this newsletter you will find a list of current ministries here at St. Thomas. I invite you to spend some time looking it over. Is there a particular one you feel drawn to? Is there one you want to know more about? Or, is there something on your heart you’d like us to consider adding to our ministries? How can we continue to hold space for, and create community that re-spects, the dignity of all? Just Katherine+

Quiet and unassuming, always willing to serve, kind and compassionate—these are words that describe our unsung hero. Almost every Sunday she is the first to arrive, unlocking the doors and turning on the lights that welcome the rest of us as we arrive to worship.

She has a heart for outreach and is working to put together “done-in-a-day” outreach projects

for our community.

This month’s unsung hero is Meranda Phillips.

UN-SUNG HERO—MERANDA PHILLIPS

Thank you Meranda for your strong, humble leadership.

WHAT’S THE RECTOR READING?

This month I’m going to read Jon Meacham’s The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels. I have wanted to read this for some time, and now’s the time! We can move forward with hope by looking at the past. As

Meacham says, “The good news is that we have come through such darkness before.” Are you immersed in an interesting summer read? Share your enthusiasm with the St. Thomas commu-nity… contact the office to let us know your reading recommendations!

PUB THEOLOGY Tuesday, July 2, 6:30pm

Selena’s at Willow Lake Tavern 10609 La Grange Rd.

Each month at Pub Theology we pick a specific topic to discuss and, through our discussion, we learn a lot… about current issues and each other. In July, we will just concentrate on that last part… learning about and reconnecting with each other. Please join us, particularly if you have never been to Pub Theology before, for an evening of fellowship. In August, we’ll begin to plan topics for the next pro-gram year. Come prepared with your list!

BRIDGE CLUB NEWS

The men are at it again! Domi-nating play at the bridge club this month were first place win-ner Charlie Wilson, with 3600 points and second place winner Jim Kimmel with 3340 points. Four tables of players had a great time on July 20.

The co-hosts for the day were Tim Moody and Elizabeth Pelle, who brought delicious snacks to help the group keep up their strength during the fierce, but friendly, competition. Do you play bridge? We’d love to have you join us! Talk with Evelyn Mudd for more information about the bridge club at St. Thomas.

READ TO GROW READING CAMP IS JULY 22-26

For months the Read to Grow committee has been planning for the 2019 summer reading camp, and now the time is here! Students from Zachary Taylor Elemen-tary School will spend a week brushing up on and learning new reading and com-munication skills beginning July 22.

In the past, the support of the St. Thomas community has been key to making Read to Grow camp a success, and this year is no different! Thank you for your donations, support, and volunteer hours all throughout the year!

If you are inclined to help these students this year, there are still a few volunteer spots open: be a guest reader, help out with crafts and games, or, maybe most importantly, write a letter to one of our campers to be delivered on the first day of camp. Your encouragement and good wishes will help the students get off to a great start!

Please contact Earl Trevor or Donna Donovan if you would like to help, or if you have any questions about Read to Grow.

ST. THOMAS MINISTRIES

Did you ever sing the a song at summer camp, or during Sunday school, or youth group, “...they will know we are Christians by our love…”? Every week, the people of St. Thomas show their love for humanity, for our community, for our planet, for each other, for God, through simple ministries. Among them are:

A big thank-you to everyone who participates in the current minis-tries at St. Thomas. And a sincere invitation to everyone who would like to join in… your ideas, talents, and dedication would be most welcome. No experience is necessary! We’d love to have you with us. Talk with Katherine+ or call the church office for more infor-mation.

Hymns We Love in Worship

There are some common hymns that are beloved across every denomination. A poll among churches in the US recently identified these hymns among parishioner favorites: Abide with Me: Fast Falls the Eventide All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name Come, Ye Thankful People, Come Crown Him with Many Crowns Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken Guide Me, Oh Thou Great Jehovah Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty How Firm a Foundation

Are your favorites on this list?

If not, which hymns would you choose to hear on Sundays?

Robert Williamson, our organist-choirmaster, invites you to make a list of your favorite hymns for inclusion during worship services this summer. Have a look through the 1982 Hymnal for inspiration, then email your list to Rob at [email protected], or complete the form below and put in in the collection plate or the church office.

HOME COMMUNION, OUR COMMUNITY “What are those little black boxes and where do they go?” Each Sunday you see someone come to the altar following communion and receive a little black box while these words are said, “Take this to ______with our love and prayers. We are one body because we share one bread, one cup.”

The little black box is a home communion kit and it travels to members of our community who, for a variety of reasons, cannot be with us in person. Although they cannot be with us on Sunday mornings, they are, and will always be, a part of our community. We are one body whether physically together or united by the sacraments.

Ed Parker is one of these recipients. Ed has been a long time member of St. Thomas serving in many capacities including treasurer, assistant treasurer, vestry member, and part of MOST (Men of St. Thomas). Ed is a great story teller and always has a smile on his face. Ed currently lives at The Forum.

Stop by and say hello—if you can find him—he’s constantly on the move!
