Dear wine lover friends, here we are again, with just few weeks delay on standard schedule of G&R Hong Kong Spring Auction, due to the lock down is experiencing the rest of the world and that delayed the cataloging of consignments, to present a new exciting selection of best Italian wines, starting from big names with Perfect Provenance lots of Sassicaia, Masseto, Biondi Santi, Conterno, Bruno Giacosa e Le Pergole Torte featured by Sarah Heller - Master of Wine, that we thank and we are honored to cooperate with, to spread and improve the knowledge of Italian Culture, through wines and the joys of the table in Asia - passing through a wide range of leading indigenous expressions of Italian biodiversity as: Nerello and Carricante of Etna - the most promising ancient rediscovered land vocated for wine in the worldwide panorama - but also well known Nebbiolo and Sangiovese in mature vintages of Barolo, Barbaresco and Brunello - mainly from traditional producers according to the taste of se-lected Italian collectors that consigned the lots. To spread and improve the knowledge of Italian Culture, through wines and the joys of the table in Asia, with an eye to support the reboot of restaurants business in our beloved Hong Kong - and good restaurants as so important to give to all of us, wine lovers, the right frame to enjoy our bottles - we improved our efforts to double up the number of pre-auction wine dinners/events without compromising with quality, trusting to meet your desires by arranging a gustative journey to experience samples of catalogued wines paired with best Italian cui-sine in town. The auction will be held, as usual, on Sunday and the registered attendees will enjoy an all day long Italian food and wine pairing created by G&R staff - as listed below - in coopera-tion with chef Valentino of Ciak. A live streaming - with telephone bid for G&R members - will be also available. The Auction catalogue features six specially commissioned works of art from artist and Master of Wine Sarah Heller MW; each is a Visual Tasting Note of a particular wine from the Perfect Provenance selection. Each work will be released in limited editions of 12. One framed 11x11” giclée print of each work will be included in one lot of the correspon-ding wine.

IMPORTANTEven though all the possible was done to describe in detail the conditions of the lots for sale, one must not forget that corks that are over 25 years old, start loosing elasticity therefore the level and conditions of the wine can vary between the moment they are catalogued to the moment they are sold. We therefore won’t to underline that: for old wines there is always the risk of yielding of the cork, and this must be carefully considered. Hence, any evaluation on the conditions of the lots put for sale has been carried out on the bases of the only recognition possible: the external one. That being stated, the judgement given by the taste, remains the only probable exam regarding the value of the wine.

If opened young, the 2013 needs quite a bit of air, as it appears to still be recovering from its recent bottling. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, leather, licorice and spices build to an explosive finish supported by beams of acidity and tan-nin. The 2013 is still sorting itself out in bottle, so patience is key. Le Pergole Torte 2001 (Lot 199) The brainchild of the cerebral Sergio Manetti and his winemaker Giulio Gambelli, Montevertine Le Pergole Torte stands alone for its visionary redefinition of what could be achieved with Sangiovese in the chilly, high-altitude hills of Radda in Chianti. 2001 is a classical form, with a wispy, shimmering texture woven around an elusive framework of aromas: sometimes floral and bright-fruited, next earthy and rich, then spicy and medicinal. Brimming with innovative ideas developed over his years abroad, Aldo brought this sense of possibility and wonder to his wines. Though by 2010 he was already largely retired, this modern classic of a vintage with its palpable energy and brightness was perfect to il-lustrate his approach. Our panel consisted of some two dozen professional wine tasters from around the world, and virtually not a word was ut-tered with regards to this wine. That's how truly outstanding it is. The soaring beauty of this landmark Sassicaia literally tran-scends the rather mundane realm of wine critique with its string of adjectives and wearisome descriptors. It hardly deserves to be treated like any of the other gorgeous wines we tasted on this glorious day. In truth, the 1985 Sassicaia does reveal a new perspective onto its perfection each time you have the fortune to taste it. I noticed a layer of bright almond-like sweetness that I don't recall tasting before. The wine seems to be getting younger, not older. Even its appearance is remarkable. Of the various samples presented from the 1980s, this wine exhibited the brightest garnet color and the most youthful personality. It shows stunning volume. The integration is seamless and the wine's many complicated pieces fit together with utmost preci-sion like a jigsaw puzzle that renders a most beautiful Italian masterpiece when admired at completion. B. Giacosa Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto (Red Label) 2011 (Lot 424) The late Bruno Giacosa was widely heralded as a maestro in a region peppered with superlatives. He was legendary for his facility at coaxing characterful, expressive wines from both Barolo and his home base of Barbaresco. The Red Label was an accolade he doled out to only his greatest triumphs. Marking the return of oenologist Dante Scaglione, the 2011 Le Rocche del Falletto, from the high-altitude amphi-theatre of Falletto in Serralunga, is a perfect expression of the tension that defines this wine. The warmth of the vintage is reflected in the density, concentration and depth without ever losing definition or elegance. The wine successfully, and somewhat magically, turns the tables on the overdone exuberance of the warm vintage and the natural heft that is inherent to Serralunga d'Alba. It does a great job of reining in all that power and transforming it into streamlined elegance instead. The wine opens to a dark and pen-etrating color and an immediately expressive bouquet. Thick lay-ers of dark fruit, iron-rich earth, balsam herb, Darjeeling tea, dried ginger and cherry cola rise from the bouquet. The wine's Falletto signature is very strong. This is a Grande Vino with the proverbial capital G and capital V. During my annual tasting with Bruna Giacosa in Neive, I learned a few new things. First, the newest vintage (2013) of the Bar-baresco Rabajà now uses fruit from a new parcel directly owned by the estate. That means production of this wine is assured for the future. The Barolo Riserva Falletto Vigna le Rocche was pro-duced in 2014 as was the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili. These are the two red label wines. The Barolo will be released in 2020 and the Barbaresco hits the market in 2019. Production numbers are low on both wines. (Monica Larner - The Wine Advocate)

Super Tuscan / Merlot Messorio, first produced in 1994, Messorio was a personal challenge with one of the most planted varieties in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, and in the world: Merlot. From the start, the idea was to transform the best bun-ches into an impactful wine with a lot of personality, sta-ying as far away as possible from the more soft, predictable style that is often associated with Merlot and instead making a thoroughbred eager to win the race. The name “messorio” refers to the wheat harvest, one of the most fundamental parts of the agricultural cycle. The tannins have begun to soften a touch, but the 2003 is still at least a few years away from offering its finest drinking. This is a fabulous effort considering a torrid vintage that was especially hard on Merlot. Over the last few months the Messorio has absor-bed its oak beautifully. The finish is long, nuanced and ut-terly impeccable. Masseto 2006 (Lot 475) The sensuous queen of Super Tuscans, Masseto was the earliest demonstration of Merlot’s prodigious ability to thrive in the Mediterranean climate when grown on clay soils. The 2006 is one of the earliest ef-forts by German-born and French-trained winemaker and Estate Director Axel Heinz. It is baroque and extravagant on the nose with almost overwhelming richness and hedonistic wildness that then, on the palate, seems to be expertly hewn down to concise, flowing contours, all of its power compressed into a refined close. The finish is utterly exquisite in its beguiling beauty. The 2008 isn’t the most powerful Oreno ever made, but it is quite possibly the most ele-gant, impeccably refined wine I have ever tasted here. Simply put, it is fabulous juice! In 2008 the percentage of Sangiovese is way down and Oreno is predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvi-gnon, a decision that has paid off handsomely. Biondi-Santi Tenuta Greppo Riserva 1971, 1985, 1997 (Lot 603) The name Biondi-Santi is synonymous with Brunello di Montalcino and few can take as much credit for its international renown as the late Franco Biondi-Santi, known affectionately by locals as “Dottore Franco.” Aside from a historical name, the estate is known for long-lived wines and very deep cellars spanning back to 1888. Of the 39 Tenuta Greppo Riserva ever made, 24 were made by Franco starting with 1971. 1971, 1985 and 1997 share many traits, having begun with cool, rainy springs but ending with warm dry summers and autumns. In the 1971, vibrancy and richness of fruit is undergirded by an almost mechanical precision that is nonetheless warm and human, unwinding to reveal layer upon layer of unex-pected depth.
