    Gene-Environment Interplay in

    Common Complex Diseases:

    Forging an Integrative Model

    Natcher Conference Center, NIH

    Campus

    Bethesda, Maryland

    January 25, 2010

    Background: The longstanding nature-versus-nurture

debate has been turned on its head. Scientists now

recognize that it is not a question of genes or

environment, but rather, that genes and environment

are inextricably intertwined throughout development to

explain virtually every observable trait. To gain a more

detailed understanding of the impact of genetic and

environmental factors on health and disease, the NIH

Genes, Environment and Health Initiative (GEI)

(www.gei.nih.gov) was launched in 2006. The GEI

program supports genetic analyses and the

development of technologies to measure environmental

    exposures through its Genetics Program

    (www.gei.nih.gov/genetics/) and Exposure Biology

    Program (EBP; www.gei.nih.gov/exposurebiology

    /index.asp), respectively.

Goal: The goal of the workshop was to engage the

scientific community in discussing and conceptualizing

a truly transdisciplinary model of geneenvironment

research that fully integrates the genetics and

environment sides of the geneenvironment equation.

The workshop featured presentations to showcase the

    stateofthescience and focused discussions to

articulate future needs and directions in research and

training on gene-environment interplay related to

    health.

This workshop was sponsored by the National

Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Behavioral and

Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) in conjunction with
