Having exceeded its goal of raising $50 million for the project, LSU is preparing to erect a high‐tech engineering complex capable of mee ng the skyrocke ng demand for engineers and construc on managers at what is now the fi h fastest growing engineering school in the country. If history is any indica on, the bigger, be er complex could very well turn out the next genera on of construc on tans in the Capital Region. A er all, the very first gradua ng class from LSU's Construc on Technology program (now Construc on Management) in 1972 reads like a who's who in industrial and commercial construc on contrac ng today. A handful of these 27 graduates went on to establish some of the area's largest firms (as noted on our list of Top 100 private companies). Art Favre, founder and president of Performance Contractors; James "Pepper" Rutland, founder and president of MMR Group; and Ed Rispone, co‐founder and chairman of ISC: All were among the first wave of students to receive an LSU degree in construc on technology. Here's a look at what that inaugural class and one of its notable instructors went on to accomplish.

1972 Construc on Management: The All‐Star Class

Turner Industries CEO Roland Toups was a young engineer himself at the me the inaugural class was making its way through LSU's construc on technology program. He taught an evening course in piping and HVAC. "I had a star‐studded class," Toups says. "They were not just bookworms. They were interested in building organiza ons." The market was hungry for fresh new talent in the years following the petrochemical industry boom in the 1960s. Many of these execu ves recall working as electricians and technicians in the field while in college. That job experience paid off in the classroom and beyond. "They knew what they wanted to do," Toups says. "Their people skills were commensurate with their technical skills." Several went on to become execu ves at Turner Industries, including Frank Jeanmard, Lester Barback and Robert Eisworth. LSU's program offered courses in scheduling using the latest key‐punch technology, as well as in es ma ng, opera ons, business management and civil engineering. “While the technology has evolved, the core principles of the program have not”, says Claud Dennis Spring, who returned to LSU to teach courses in the program a er working in the commercial construc on industry for 13 years. The legacy con nues, as Rispone and Rutland both have sons who have been trained through the program.

ED RISPONE Founder, ISC •1972 Works full-time at Saia Electric in estimating while attending LSU. Graduates with a bachelor's degree in construction technology. Toups recruits him as project manager for a contract with Nichols Construction (now Turner Industries). •1975 Pepper Rutland recruits Rispone to Matthews-McCracken. •1989 Co-founds electrical and instrumentation contracting company ISC with his brother, Jerry Rispone. •2003 Serves as national chairman of the Associated Builders and Contractors. •2009 Gov. Bobby Jindal appoints him chairman of the Louisiana Workforce Investment Council. •2011 Becomes chairman of the Louisiana Federation for Chidren •2013 ISC generates about $300 million in revenue. •2014 ISC expands to Lake Charles. The company now has about 2,500 employees in Baton Rouge, Beaumont, Houston and Lake Charles.

Goes to work in estimating and engineering for Matthews-McCracken. •1991 He founds an electrical and instrumentation contracting company called MMR Group. •1994 MMR Group wins its first international contract, for a refinery in Venezuela. •2014 MMR Group now has 21 operating offices in five countries. The company's revenues reached $952 million last year; MMR Group employs about 4,600 U.S. employees. Rutland's youngest son is now studying construction management at LSU.

The Construc on Industry Advisory Council is kicking off another great year and

hopes to build upon previous successes of record breaking financial support as well as

outstanding volunteer efforts to enhance the LSU Construc on Management program.

I am honored to serve as your President and look forward to working with the Officers,

Board of Directors, Commi ee Chairs, and all CIAC members.

The strength of our organiza on is directly ed to the efforts of our commi ees. The

Student Enhancement Commi ee interacts directly with the CM students and offers a

mentorship program, interview skills workshop, industry networking, student com

pe on guidance, and various field trips. The Department Enhancement Commi ee is

coordina ng efforts to provide instruc onal models and displays for the new

laboratory areas. The Curriculum and Accredita on Commi ee has been assis ng the

CM Department through the accredita on process with the Associated Schools of

Construc on. In addi on, this commi ee organizes the popular Industry Guest Lecture

Series and par cipates in CM course composi on and content. The Membership and

Fundraising commi ee will reach out to poten al new members and organize our

annual golf tournament next spring. I would like to thank the Commi ee Chairs and

Curriculum and Accredita on Commi ee

Construc on Management Guest Lecture Series

In the fall of 2014, the guest lecture series will begin its third semester of being integrated into the

Construc on Management Department courses. We have had a tremendous number of industry professionals

volunteer their me and skills to help educate students on the process and knowledge of the construc on

industry. The posi ve feedback that students have given has sparked an interest from many companies in the

southern region to become involved in guest lecturing in courses of their respec ve sectors. We appreciate the

me and support that everyone has given to make this a great addi on to the department. If you are interested in

volunteering, please let us know!

The Curriculum & Accredita on Commi ee assists the department in its ongoing prepara on for

accredita on by building financial reserves for both opera ng expenses and endowment of professorships and

chairs to a ract and maintain the top teaching talent. Addi onally, the Curriculum & Accredita on Commi ee

has and will con nue to conduct surveys among recent CM graduates employed by CIAC members. Their input

and feedback is helpful in recommending program refinements and in efforts to keep courses current and

relevant. If you have hired recent CM graduates, please pass their email addresses along to the CIAC office to be

included in the survey.

In December of 2014, we will be gathering volunteers to par cipate in the guest lecture series for the

2015 spring semester. If there is interest in being a guest lecturer for a course of your specialty, please contact

Ryan Day.

In February of 2015, CIAC will be par cipa ng in the ACCE Industry Advisory Board Event. We are always

looking to improve our curriculum and standards, as well as our knowledge, to make LSU Construc on

Management the best in country.

series was, please let us know!

Department Enhancement

With Phase One complete ou i ng the new E‐Lab, the epartment Enhancement Commi ee is looking

forward to another exci ng year. We plan to work towards a new exhibit showcasing commercial construc on,

complete a 3‐D piping model of the exis ng Industrial exhibit, and work towards more miscellaneous items such as

pumps, instruments, etc. that will help showcase our industry to prospec ve and current students in the

Construc on Management Program.


The CIAC Annual General Membership Mee ng and

Banquet was held at Lod Cook on May 8th. It was well a ended

by CIAC Members, LSU Facility & Administra on,

Construc on Student Associa on Officers, and representa ves

of the LSU Founda on.

The mee ng was opened by Sco Couper, CIAC President,

who spoke about our mission “To enhance the Construc on

Industry through LSU’s Construc on Management Program,

providing high quality educa on and developing leaders for our

future”.

LSU CM Department Head, Dr. Charles Berryman first

thanked the CIAC for its contribu ons to the department, both

financially and through interac on with the students and

faculty, both in and out of the classroom. He closed by

recognizing new members to his staff, in par cular, Dr. Yimin

Zhu, holder of the Pulte Home Professorship with a focus on

BIM, and Kimberley Williams, Programs Coordinator, who will

also serve in a role interfacing between the CIAC and CM

Department.

Richard Koubek, Dean of the College of Engineering, spoke

about the future of the College and in par cular the CM

Department. He highlighted how LSU contributed to the State

of Louisiana and its businesses and industries. He closed with

comments on how the renova on of Patrick Taylor Hall will

posi vely influence the quality of educa on for future students.

The LSU Founda on recognized the CIAC, with its member

companies and individuals, who have made major contribu ons

to the “Breaking New Ground” campaign to renovate Patrick

Taylor Hall. Ken Naquin, AGC, gave an update on the funds

available for the three accredited CM programs in Louisiana

thanks to the HB‐421 and its sponsor Erich Pon .

CIAC President, Sco Couper introduced Gerrad Dela e, our

incoming President. Gerrad has been a heavily involved CIAC

member for 7 years. He has served in various capaci es:

Finance and Governance Commi ee Chair, and most recently

as Personnel Chair. His efforts

2014 Golf Tournament

The Greater Baton Rouge Business Report published a list of the Top 100

privately owned companies in its July 22, 2014 issue. In order to get these

rankings, the Business Report corresponded with the companies on last year’s

list, newly qualifying companies, and reader‐suggested companies. Even

companies that did not choose to give up their numbers were included in the

rankings. Public informa on was used to make es mates for these companies.

Businesses on the list were ranked by their revenues during the most recent

fiscal year, which was 2013 for the majority of companies. Of these top ranked

companies, 15 businesses are members of CIAC. Those companies and their

On April 11, your CIAC had its 5th annual golf tournament at Carter Planta on. The course was in impeccable shape, the weather was perfect, and the hackers were out in full force. It was a great tournament.

The Alliance Safety Council—one of the tournament sponsors– was a huge part of this years’ success, thanks to the addi ons of Wendy Thibodeaux, Renee Barbier, and Karen Anderson to the tournament commi ee. The ladies set up the C‐Vent’s online registra on, pu ng many hours into the li le details.

The other tournament sponsor was MMR. Not only did they fund the shirts, they helped pick out and design this year’s logos. The shirts were top notch and it’s great to see them being worn around town.

Team Topcor took this year’s top prize! Having 27 registered teams was a solid improvement from last year and something to build on moving forward. We had a strong list of sponsors and several companies serving food on the course.

Altogether the tournament raised over $9,500! Although other years have ne ed more, we put a lot back into the tournament. Future plans are to spend more on the golfers, making the tournament a be er experience and garnering more par cipa on.

Alumni Spotlight: James ‘Pepper’ Rutland

BATON ROUGE – MMR Group re‐cently announced a $1 million gi to the Louisiana State University’s (LSU) College of Engineering. MMR, headquartered in Baton Rouge with 20 branch offices throughout North and South America, is the largest open‐shop electrical and instrumenta on construc on firm in the United States. The dona on will further elevate the Construc on Management program’s prominence by providing state‐of‐the‐art learning spaces to be er prepare its students for successful employment in the construc on industry.

“With the abundance of construc on projects on the horizon for Baton Rouge and throughout the Gulf Coast, the need to a ract skilled construc on management personnel is impera ve to the success of our industry,” said MMR President and CEO James “Pepper” Rutland. “We are proud to support LSU’s Construc on Management program and its mission to deliver the most qualified graduates needed to lead these industry projects.”

MMR’s gi will provide the Construc on Management program with a Building Simula on and Informa on Modeling Studio and a new Advanced Materials and Methods Laboratory. Both labs will support the construc on management

Recently named Engineering News Record of Texas & Louisiana's 2013 Specialty Contractor, MMR accelerated to the trade magazine's top spot by increasing its revenue by 132 percent between 2011 and 2012, the largest growth of any specialty contractor on the list. MMR reported revenue of $712 million in 2012 and expects to exceed $800 million in 2013.

CM—Annual Salary Comparison

As part of the LSU CM Department’s accredita on requirements, an industry survey was distributed to CM alumni in March 2014 . The response rate was impressive as there were over 240 completed surveys. This anonymous survey contained ques ons about student learning as well as basic demographics. Two ques ons were linked – salary and the number of years since gradua on. This produced a very interes ng chart (see below) that demonstrates the me scale earning capacity for those who hold a construc on management degree. This tool is invaluable for recrui ng as it is an “eye opener” for the general public: yes…there is money to be made in construc on management. A big thanks goes out to all of our alumni for helping the LSU Bert S. Turner Department of Construc on Management obtain this valuable informa on.

“We are growing! Early projec ons for the upcoming academic year place us around 600 students in the undergraduate, graduate, and post baccalaureate programs. Outstanding employment opportuni es await these students. In fact, we are an cipa ng the largest Fall Construc on Interview Day (CID) ever recorded. While some of this popularity can be a ributed to the increase in construc on projects in Louisiana, I believe a significant part of it is directly related to the various recrui ng ac vi es, gener‐ous industry dona ons, and the dedicated folks working to be er the program. In addi‐on, the CM Department has been visible through many news ar cles, campus ac vi es,

conferences, research, and online graduate programs.

We are grateful to our alumni, friends, colleagues, and the Construc on Industry Advisory Council (CIAC) for this success. Each and every day we are moving closer to our vision: To transform the LSU construc on management department into a na onally renowned school of construc on. In September of 2012, OSHA announced that the consor um between the Alliance Safety Council and Louisiana State University's (LSU) College of Engineering was selected through a na onal compe ve process as one of only four new OTIECs across the country, bringing the total number to twenty‐eight. Named the Mid‐south OTIEC, they are pleased to offer in demand OSHA courses close to industry and close to home. The Mid‐south OTIEC serves region VI, which includes the five‐state area of Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Kathy Trahan, CEO of Alliance, was instrumental in securing this selec on.

The Mid‐South OTIEC is authorized to offer all 43 OSHA courses available and has begun conduc ng training. Courses include OSHA 500– Trainer course in OSHA standards for construc on and OSHA 510– Occupa onal safety and health standards for the construc on industry. OTI Educa on Centers play a prominent role in curriculum development and offer subject ma er exper se based on their organiza onal competencies. An advisory group has been established in conjunc on with LSU to assist with developing courses and iden fying training loca ons. Dr. Charles Pecquet has been named as the Construc on Management co‐chair to the advisory board along with Dr. Fred Aghazadeh represen ng Industrial Engineering.

Dr. Shi holds the Art Favre Endowed Chair in Industrial Construc on. Dr. Shi joins LSU from the Rinker School of Building Construc on at the University of Florida. Prior to UF, he was a professor and Chair of the Construc on Management Program at the University of Nebraska.

Christofer Harper , Ph. D., Assistant Professor

Dr. Harper holds the McCollister Family Professorship and is a new resident of Baton Rouge, coming from Boulder, Colorado. His focus of research is on alterna ve delivery methods, construc on contrac ng, and project controls in order to improve the management of public and private construc on projects.

Le er from the CSA President

The Construc on Student Associa on is looking forward to another great school year. As the CM

program at LSU grows, we hope the student membership of our organiza on con nues to grow as well. Every

year, CSA strives to help students advance in their educa on and develop their networking abili es. We have

a mee ng every month during the semester where we will have a guest speaker from the industry come and

present to the students what they do, how things go, and what to expect when working in construc on. There

is always a social that follows the mee ngs where the students can mingle with one another and also with our

guest speakers.

Speaking of socials, CSA also holds many social events for its members. This coming year we are

planning a couple of football tailgates, an annual crawfish boil and an annual pig roast. We also gather

members to help out with events such as the ABC Skeet Shoot, the ABC Gumbo/Jambalaya Cook‐off, the CIAC

Golf Tournament, etc. At these events, students get the opportunity to meet some of the industry

professionals they will be interviewing with at Construc on Interview Day at a more personal level. By doing

this, students will feel more relaxed and confident when talking to them on a more professional level. These

are the reasons we encourage all CM students to get involved and become a member of CSA!
