Gatsby Party! Class presentations: May 20 th What is your group’s plan for the school-wide party? Dress up in theme optional EC Need to have samples of “artifacts” ready to show. Power points will be interesting!! Don’t read to us. Explain and have a lot of images to enhance your ideas. Outline ideas in bullet points “Save the Date” announcement-CMC recognition day!! Brian, the other teachers and I will assess the effectiveness of the planning & execution of your ideas. Participation is crucial! Your grade is based on you bringin’ it to the party. BUDGETS: if your committee plans for items that require purchase, estimate of cost and exactly what & where to purchase must be submitted to me the day of presentation for consideration.

guests? What arrangement will provide adequate space for dancing, seating, conversation, and access for refreshments?

• How will you decorate the space to reflect the theme? • What materials are needed for décor? • What props, accessories are needed for décor?• How will you work with Music, Dance, & Refreshments committees

(nuts, dairy, color additives, honey, gluten are common allergens)• How will you prepare and get the food/drinks to the event?• How will it be served? By whom?• How will it be cleaned up?• How do you keep costs down, but have enough interesting choices

for guests?

• How will the music be played? Sound system set up?• What equipment/technology is needed? • Tech set up? Monitoring during event? Break down and clean

up?• Plan for 4 hours of music—”welcome/warm-up, main event,

closing time”• Background video? (we can set up projector) • How will you work with Dance Committee to ensure there are

songs that will get people on the dance floor? Dance demo? • How will you bring/maintain the mood and atmosphere

through sound?

• How will the committee communicate with quests about fun jazz era dances to try?

• How will the guests learn the dances?• Which dances to demonstrate? Which dances to teach

quests?• When is a good time to demo/teach dances? • How will the committee encourage guests to get out on the

dancefloor? • Partner dances? Group dances? Solo?• How will you work with music committee to make sure

guests are feeling the jazz vibe?

• Teaching materials for dances (brochure, handout, video to post online, demo footprints to lay out on floor, ???)

during the event!

Fashion: Essential Questions

• What are ways guests (male and female) can dress in 1920s inspired outfits, with any budget?

• What are the different looks besides flapper/gangster?• What are the ways guests can use what they own or make

(DIY) a 1920s look?• Makeup/hair/accessories—don’t forget the finishing touches! • How do you communicate all your ideas to the rest of the

school? • How will you make sure that as many participate in the dress

up part as possible? • What are you going to wear???

underdressed?• DIY accessories to jazz up a plain outfit? (pinterest had a

lot of good ideas!)

• How does conversation play into the overall atmosphere of a party?

• How do you get guests mingling and talking? • How do you share the jazz age vernacular with

others? • How do you get the conversation started? • What are fun, interesting things to bring up at a 1920s

themed party?• What do you do if people are shy? How do you draw

them in?

Ambiance: to create

• A lexicon of 1920s slang to distribute (pamphlet, brochure, webpage, something using smartphone technology? An app? Little game cards to pass out on tables or to guests? Get creative.)

• A plan to mingle, get conversations going, get people talking (twenties style!) and make sure guests are getting into the vibe.

• Practice talking this way yourself. You are our authentic 1920s conversationalist, Old Sport.

Echoes of the Jazz Age (1931)

• Table groups will email me one paper with answers: [email protected] make sure everyone’s name is clear!

1. What is the “hook”? Explain the joke or humor in Fitzgerald’s sentence. Introduction

2. What is the thesis? (hint: it’s two sentences…) Introduction3. List the transition word or phrase from the beginning of each

paragraph. Organization4. What do you notice about this list of words? (hint…this clues the

reader in to the organization structure) Organization5. What thoughts and images does Fitzgerald leave the reader at the end

of the paper? (hint: what major event had just happened, and how does this reflect the tone of the last paragraph?) Conclusion
