Scope, Objectives, and Value• Development of Near-Zero emission compressed natural gas engines for medium-

and heavy-duty truck applications

• One Near-Zero Emissions CWI 9L CNG Engine has been developed and currently

being demonstrated in Refuse trucks and transit buses.

• Three Near-Zero emission CNG engine sizes in development by 2017 (CWI 6.7L,

CWI 12L, PSI 8.8L)

• Meet optional Near Zero NOx emission standards for medium-duty trucks, urban bus,

school bus and refuse applications

• Meet 2017 EPA greenhouse gas emission requirements

Status• CWI 6.7L –Completed the development & Demonstration. Engine is commercially

available

• CWI 9L – Engine is commercially available throughout Southern California in transit

and refuse application.

• CWI 12L – Developed the NZE 12L. Field test is underway. Engine will be

commercially available in Q1-2018

• PSI 8.8L - Still developing the NZE engine.

Opus 12 Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 to Methane

Purpose

Demonstrate the viability of Opus 12’s metal nanoparticle

catalyst/polymer membrane combination to produce

methane from CO2, water, and electricity.

Objectives

Test Opus 12’s current catalyst formulation for the

conversion of the CO2 component of biogas to CH4.

Formulate and test a new catalyst structure that promises

to provide improved selectivity for CO2-to-CH4 conversion.

Status

1st Milestone completed: Demonstrated conversion of CO2

to CO in methane blends.

Reformulation of copper nanoparticle catalysts is

underway with the aim of developing selectivity for

PNNL Solar Microchannel Steam Methane Reformer

Project

Develop and demonstrate a Solar Thermochemical

Advanced Reactor System (STARS) that uses sunlight to

converts methane and water into hydrogen.

Objectives

Design, fabricate and test the next version of solar

thermochemical system at the SDSU Brawley Test Site.

Produce hydrogen at a rate of 25 kg/day.

Demonstrate a solar-to-chemical energy conversion

efficiency of greater than 75% (>20% renewable energy

content).

Accomplishments

Designed and fabricated the TRL 6 reactor.

Completed on-sun testing at SDSU Brawley.

Completed DOE final report.

Status

Launching development of a TRL 7 system using an

additional $1 million in DOE funding for additional testing

can carbon utilization via methanol and plastics.

New DOE CRADA complete

Updated reactor designed and fabrication is underway
