English ReflectionsWriting benchmarks were revised to reflect Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) for close text analysis, essays of argumentation, and research supported by informational sources.

English 12 curriculum has been revised to include a survey of British Literature and reflect the CCLS.

Middle and high school students have participated in the National Council of Teachers of English competition for national recognition in writing.

The Writing Center has been utilized by more students to discuss, edit and revise writing or engage in college essay tutorials.

Advanced Placement and high school honors students have participated in the National Reading Competition for High Schools with two students earning a near perfect score ranking in the 200 highest-scoring 9th graders in the entire country.

Mathematics ReflectionsMore students take Advanced Placement math courses in Garden City High School than any other high school in the county. Nearly two-thirds of the graduating class are enrolled in AP Statistics and/or AP Calculus BC.

Middle school math curriculum is aligned with Common Core Learning Standards. Common Core Algebra curriculum has been revised and we are preparing for the Common Core Geometry curriculum in 2014-15.

The freshman/sophomore math team competed in the Nassau County Mathematics Tournament and finished 14th in the county; a ninth grade student placed 5th in the county.

Thirty-three high school students participate on the math team; last year the team finished in second place.

High school student competed in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination and finished in the top 2% of competing students in the country.

Science ReflectionsMiddle school students were involved in science research and participated in the DuPont Essay Science Challenge, NASA Spaced Out Sports, Siemens We Can Change the World, Toshiba Exploravision and other science competitions.

The students’ work was recognized by the first place grand prize at LISEF Broadcom Masters, and the national finalist award at Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

The Middle School Science Olympiad team was recognized with gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention medals.

All 6th graders participated as judges in the International Flame Challenge.

Science ReflectionsHigh school students participated in research projects at local institutions, including Winthrop University Hospital, Brookhaven National Lab and Stony Brook, Adelphi, Hofstra and Rockefeller Universities.

High school students under the guidance of the Garden City science teachers participated in numerous research projects, and their work was recognized by impressive awards, including:

Social Studies ReflectionsTeam of HS students won the regional level of the Foreign Policy Association’s Academic Quest competition and went on to compete in Washington, DC.

A middle school student was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the New York State Archives for his research paper on immigration.

Improved scores on the Advanced Placement Macroeconomics exam.

The percentage of students earning mastery level scores on the Global History and US History Regents exams consistently ranks at the top among comparator schools in Nassau County.

Students participated in several university-based programs including A Civil Rights Forum- 50 Years since Brown and Constitution Day at Hofstra University.

Began implementation of Common Core aligned reading benchmarks in the middle school and high school.

Began work identifying historical thinking skills to be taught at each grade level and designed lessons aimed at developing those skills.

Sixth grade student was the Grand Prize winner of the “There Ought to be a Law” contest

World Languages Reflections

World Languages lab at the high school is utilized throughout the day for the purposes of enhancing student speaking and listening skills.

116 students enrolled in college level French, German, Italian, Latin and Spanish courses.

79% of Garden City students continue world language study in their fourth year.

43% of Garden City students continue world language study in their fifth year.

89 students at the high school are enrolled in more than one language.

World Languages ReflectionsStudents who participated in the elementary FLES program have developed speaking, listening , reading and writing skills, which have proven to be a benefit in the Modes of Language Learning.

Middle and high school students participate in The National Spanish Exam administered by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese(AATSP). Students with FLES experience are graded on a more stringent scale- the same scale as a Native Speaker.

Numerous gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention awards earned on local and national exams.

Fine & Performing Arts In 2013, twenty-nine Advanced Placement art students were offered $1.96 million in four year scholarships. Sixteen of these students are currently attending colleges or universities as art majors.

Thirty students K-12 participated in the 2013 ASA All County Art Exhibit at Adelphi University.

Students participate in numerous juried art competitions, including the NYSATA Legislative Art Exhibit, NYS Martin Luther King Exhibition, GO APE and the GC Historical Society Art Display.

Eighth grade students create a permanent art display in the hallways at the middle school.

Advanced Placement Studio Art students host an art exhibit and reception at the high school to showcase their work.

The high school’s 2012 “Mast” Yearbook was selected for the Walsworth Publishing’s Gallery of Excellence.

Three high school students were selected finalists in Senator Kemp Hannon’s “Best in Town” contest.

Fine & Performing Arts Garden City was designated by the NAMM Foundation as one of 307 “Best Communities for Music Education” nationally for its outstanding commitment to music education.

Three time “Grammy Signature School Semi-Finalist” winner.

One student selected to perform in the All Eastern Symphonic Band.

Seventy-five students performed at the 2013 NMEA All-County Music Festival.

Two students were accepted to perform in NYSSMA All-State Festival in Rochester, and four others were selected as All State alternates.

District-wide, thirteen students were chosen to participate in the Long Island String Festival.

Garden City Marching Band won the Best Overall Effect, Guard and Percussion awards at the United States Band State Marching Band Championships.

Eighth grade band and MS Late Night Jazz Ensemble received first place Superior Ratings and Best Overall Performance Awards at the “Music in the Parks” Festival. A jazz string bass player was named the best soloist at the same festival.

Garden City High School is a nationally recognized school of excellence. Using specific benchmarks, three publications have identified the ‘best high schools’ in the country: Newsweek’s 2013 list of Best American High Schools (ranked 139), US News Best High Schools (ranked 123) and The Washington Post 2013 High School Challenge (ranked 230).

80% of the Class of 2013 were accepted to at least one of The Best 378 Colleges according to Princeton Review’s Best Colleges.

The number of AP Scholars (220 students) has increased by 45% since 2009. This is the largest number of AP Scholars in Garden City history.

In 2013, 89% of Advanced Placement students scored a 3 or higher on an AP exam. According to the National Center for Educational Accountability, an AP Exam score of 3 or higher is a strong predictor of a student’s ability to persist in college and earn a bachelor’s degree.

Highlights Pertaining to Student Progress and Program Effectiveness

For the sixth consecutive year, Garden City High School was named a 2013 NYS Public High School Athletic Association School of Distinction, as 32 varsity teams maintained a collective GPA of 90 or higher.

District writing and research initiatives surpass state requirement that students complete a Regents Research Paper prior to graduation.

The middle school offers an informational meeting for sixth grade parents entitled “Making the Accelerated Choice in Math and Science.”

Although the State Education Department established new baselines to measure student progress on the grades 3-8 Common Core Learning Standards assessments, elementary and middle level results consistently rank amongst the highest in the region, with scores at or above comparator districts.

In support of the Common Core initiative, mathematics textbooks and supplemental materials were purchased for grades K-5.


In support of the Response to Intervention initiative, a primary level mathematics specialist was hired to support students at-risk in mathematics.

Beginner and advanced robotics workshops for elementary students are offered through the Winter Program for Kids and Summer Enrichment programs. The newly-created Middle School Robotics Team is preparing for its inaugural tournament later this winter.

On-line Method Test Prep review courses for students in grades 10-12 through Castle Learning for SAT and ACT exam. Program subscribes more than 300 active student user accounts.

ACT, SAT and SAT Subject Test review courses in Biology, US History, Global History, and Math will be offered through the Garden City Continuing Education department in the spring.

Four, week-long college essay writing courses offered through the Summer Enrichment program. A similar course was also offered in the fall through the Continuing Education.


Develop a “Transition to College from High School” assembly program for high school seniors focusing on topics such as residential life, personal responsibility, social host laws, financial responsibility.

Offer a college credit Business Marketing course for high school students through Adelphi University.

Continue staff development for elementary and middle level teachers to address curriculum changes in the Common Core Learning Standards for mathematics and literacy.

Prepare for implementation of Common Core Regents exams in English, Geometry and Algebra 2.

Future Initiatives

Plan adoption of grades 6-8 math textbook series in support of changes in mathematics curriculum.

Ongoing development and implementation of new student projects and assessments associated with Common Core Learning Standards.

Create a math video library for parents and students to address changes in mathematics instructional practices.

Institute a “Question of the Week” feature about the Common Core Learning Standards as it relates to Garden City in our communication to parents, and in the local press.
